"I wasted 15 minutes of my life watching Napolean Dynamite"

I didn't think there could be a so-called "cult classic" more overrated and less entertaining than Warriors.

Until I ordered this piece of shit.

I went w/ a bunch of people I knew who were just running on about how funny it was, and I let it get me worried about the state of people my age that they can so worked up and excited over an ironic parade of intentional camp.

And Uncle Rico is a poor man's Al Bundy. Don't be fooled.

And these guys wish they were Wes Anderson, but they have no heart.

I was worried I wouldnt like it as much as others & while I didnt I still enjoyed it 4 the most part. Seems 2 be 1 of those love or hate flicks tho.

Are you kidding? The rundown loser working a lame job, constantly trying to remember his high school glory days? So maybe they left out Al's overt misogyny, but as far as 'pathetically failed ex-jock desperately trying to go back to his senior year, his last good year in life' we have a carbon copy.

>>And these guys wish they were Wes Anderson, but they have no

>Reaching even more on that one.

Well, I should say that the movie was highly recommended to me as "the movie Rushmore wished it was" (direct quote) by an obnoxious, pretentious emo art major, son of SF art studio owners, so I'll admit I approached it with a little baggage.

But seriously, they were trying to reproduce the heavily composed mis-en-scene, with lots of scene and character details always in the background. And there was exaggerated wardrobe to help define characters. And there was a bright, colorful, and playful color palette. And obviously the humor being based on understated irony. I think there's comparisons to be made.

In the end, though, people like it -- fine. I'm literally the only person I'm acquainted with that dislikes it, though, so that helps put a bigger chip on my shoulder.

I guess. I just never saw it that way. ND & Max are just completely different as far as main characters. Max is smart & maybe a little misguided while ND is just a complete toolshed in every way.

the idea of a jock trying to relive his glory days is present in a LOT of American literature, film, and theater.

Take a look at "Death of a Salesman"--Biff is absolutely an Al Bundy-like character. hell, you could even say that Willy is too. and this was written in, what? the 40's? 50's?

Uncle Rico was a bench warmer.

Al Bundy scored 4 TDS for Polk High in one game.

It started a little slow for me too, but I enjoyed it and got some huge laughs out of it.

I don't get it.

Can't people just say, "Eh, I didn't like it." and move on with their lives? I personally loved it, but it ain't like I'm part of some exclusive club or something. Other people are like GODDAMNIT I WASTED TIME WATCHING THAT PIECE OF SHIT. It's kinda funny but also kinda sad.

PS - You should try giving a movie more than fifteen minutes next time. I've seen plenty of films that are slow or outright bad for the first 15 and get better (also the opposite is true).

If you can tell a movie sucks after 15 minutes, the movie will still suck after 90 minutes, 120 minutes, and so on.

Trust me, never fails.

I've never understood why that movie is so loved. But I guess I'm missing the point.

Watch what you say about "The Warrios" though. That's great cinema.

There are so many great quotables in this film, delivered with deadpan precision by each character.

Is that because you think youre fat? You could be drinking whole milk if you wanted to

I think Im going to build her a cake

If you vote for me, all of your wildest dreams will come true

Liger, its pretty much my favorite animal

Ahh, whatever, I could go forever on these.

This movie also has a lot of heart. Most of the characters lead a pathetic existence, and really have no exit signs in their hall of backcountry misery. These characters cling and live for such ridiculous things, yet its all they have. Its actually pretty freaking sad, but hilarious at the same time, which is why I dig the movie so much.

Like **everyone** I talk to has to rep that movie as one of the best of the last year. And it was making headlines when it went to DVD b/c it was selling out **everywhere**. And the high school near my house had a Napoleon Dynamite themed homecoming. And I see his stupid merchandise being sold all over the place, and worn all over the place.

I'm more than a little worried that this movie is going to end up being somewhat defining and emblematic for people 16-24 right now, like Breakfast Club or Easy Rider or something like that. That means I can't just pretend it's another mediocre MTV produced comedy which happened to make a few bucks.

I could be wrong. I hope I'm wrong. I probably just need to hang out w/ different people, but we'll see.

And yes, I'm fucking sick of it. And yes, even the high school in the town DID have a homecoming themed after it, so it's not only college students. And yes, the DVD DID sell out everywhere upon its release, so it's not only this high school.

The movie is very popular, even if it's not UNIVERSALLY loved like it is at my school.

Liberal in political THEORY that is, because the other ridiculous irony is while it has a self-image of extreme liberalism, it is THE WHITEST CAL STATE UNIVERSITY IN THE ENTIRE STATE / SYSTEM. This has something to do w/ geography as well, but it's an irony that really has to be seen to be fully believed.

The movie goes kinda slow. IF you can only make it through 15 minutes, though, you certainly don't have the attention span necessary to watch this, and probably many other movies as well.

It was made all the worse by the incessant hype. I had friends going multiple times, telling me how fuckin funny it was. My brother (who is extremely hit or miss as far as his tastes go..Loves Rushmore, loves Ace Ventura:When Nature Calls) talking it up saying how great it was. Subbing at high schools last year, I had kids telling me I had to see it, had to rent it that it was basically the funniest movie ever.

And as I got further and further into it, waiting desperately for that payoff, really wanting to not hate my friends, my brother and random other people, I realized it wasn't coming. After it finished, I just bsat there for like five minutes..."That's all there is?"

Bottom line, when you feel like all these people are telling you about some awesome shit and you wanna catch up, when you feel it sucks, it gets you angry, irrationally so. That explains why people who didn't like it have a good hate for it. We've all been told how great it is.

I've watched a lot of movies in recent years, and while -- yes -- it would be pretty unfair to say ND is "terrible," I've also seen a CRAPLOAD of better films.

If this is SERIOUSLY one of the best you've seen, all I can think is that you're not watching that much.

if no, then you don't *get* it...

if yes, then...well, you still don't get it.

and that's okay. you don't have to get it.

johnbook does.

a lot of people i know found that the movie was incredibly on-point in capturing, of course with a slightly absurdist spin, what a town like that is like for those who live there...and find that praiseworthy in and of itself.

there are other reasons i liked the movie, but i think that's one of the most important reasons to me. the movie was not only funny (to me), but it resonated (like i know kids, especially mormon kids, who are napolean-like, to different degrees).

now, what i can't stand is when people don't like something (that, by the way, it's really trendy to hate on right about now...where there's overhype, backlash isn't far behind), and they hate on those with whom it struck a chord, and do so without any context.
