In past posts on this topic, dudes in here always name movies that don't meet chick flick criteria.

To review: About a Boy, Jerry Maguire, Say Anything and High Fidelity aren't chick flicks, guys.

Carry on.

*cancels post*

Yeah, anything based on a Nick Hornby novel can't really be considered a 'chick flick'

Or anything with John Cusack, can it? Maybe Serendipity? But a lot of the times his romantic comedies seem to have a cool, non threatening somewhat dude-centric slant to them, making them kind of 'safe' for guys. So I'm not sure how he fits into the mix.

The problem is a lot of us tend to equate romantic comedies with being chick flicks. Like if it isn't rife with CGI, explosions and titties suddenly it's Steel Magnolias. So the question is, what IS a chick flick?

I feel like I have to contribute something here... so I'll confess...

I like 13 Going on 30.

Pretty much.

>
>Or anything with John Cusack, can it? Maybe Serendipity?

America's Sweethearts, definitely. And yeah, I think Serendipity qualifies because of that whole "we'll meet again if it's meant to be" thing. Very girly.

But a
>lot of the times his romantic comedies seem to have a cool,
>non threatening somewhat dude-centric slant to them, making

Right...If a film has a dude-centric slant, it can't be a chick flick.

>

Exactly!

So the
>question is, what IS a chick flick?

Well, buckshot, I'm glad you asked.

For starters, a chick flick must have a female lead. Two or three -- even better. There may be a male lead, but the story centers around the woman (or women).

The story is about "girly" stuff like weddings, cheerleading, fighting over the same guy, reconnecting with sisters due to death of a parent, or motherhood. May also be about universal themes like vacationing together or teenage angst, but with a decidedly female slant.

The male involved is either unrealistically charming from the get-go or a doggy bastard who get kicked to the curb early in the film but then sees the error of his ways and decide she's "the one." He comes crawling back and she usually forgives him.

There is little to no violence.

The sex scenes are tame, with little nudity, if any.

If it's a drama, there's at LEAST one scene that makes you cry. It's likely because someone has died or is dying.

Add on...

lol! Hmm...I'm inclined to say no, it's just a romantic comedy. It's been a long time since I've seen it, so forgive my memory lapse -- Was the story told from Harry's viewpoint, or was it in the third person?

(and I'm back! fuckin' job getting in the way of my posting)

I always thought of chick flicks as anything that's all about emotions and love and junk (said in my 14-year-old voice).

So even when there is a male lead, the guy gets all sensitive and speaks honestly about his feelings. Guys don't want to see that crap.

Harry/Sally is still borderline, though.

But by your definition, Sleepless in Seattle is not a chick flick.

I know a lot of girls who are really big fans of that movie, not hardly any guys. Though then again, most of my friends are girls so maybe the sample is skewed. But I'd say if it's a movie that girls are much more likely to list among their favorites than guys are, it's a chick flick, regardless of which lead or leads get the most screen time, and other aforementioned formulas.

as it is about whether the story centers around the woman (or women).

what if it really centers around both though?

Does that put them in a sort of unisex category?

...just a flick that chicks like. :-)

That's why it's kinda hard (for me, anyway, lol) to put the chick flick label on movies like When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail and Before Sunrise/Sunset.

I dunno, I can see your point about the Nick Hornby adaptations, and Jerry Maguire, but it seems like those extremely conventional romantic comedies are chick flicks (You've Got Mail/Sleepless In Seattle), to me at least. They pander so hard to what the filmmakers think women want to see in a movie, that even though the female isn't the focus of the story, the female moviegoer's fantasy of romantic life is. Like I would put an amendment in your general rules for if it's by a female writer or director, or written from a very "feminine" (stereotypically American conventional yadda yadda yadda) sensibility (though did one of the Ephrons have a hand in When Harry Met Sally, or am I making that up?), that would supersede the need for the story to be totally centered on the female lead or leads. Just my two cents though.

'Cause I don't think guy movies have to have all male, or even mostly male lead characters. I mean obviously if they don't then you need to have a lot of thematic pandering to "what guys wanna see", but still.

Yeah, but I think a lot of guys automatically think if it's a romantic comedy than it's a chick flick.

Okay, I hear ya. That criteria would certainly make a case for You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. And yeah, Nora Ephron wrote the screenplay for When Harry Met Sally.

"Sense and Sensibility" and "Passion Fish." To me, these are both films about women, not "chick flicks." They're not emotionally manipulative in the way that most chick flicks are.

I also love "Amelie" and "Before Sunrise," but I don't consider those meeting the click flick criteria.

I wanted to recommend this to one of my boys, but I don't know how to plug a movie that's essentially about two people walking around Vienna having a conversation about their feelings, without me sounding like a girl.

Yeah, sitting around watching Before Sunrise with your crew is porbably not a good idea. I did watch it with my roommate in college and we were able to discuss it on an intellectual level.

How about this: it's a good date movie that you don't have feel like a sucka when you're watching it. Or does that make it a chick flick?

I said Serendipity was a chick flick because of the whole "we'll meet again if it's meant to be" thing. The same could be said of Before Sunrise, lol. So, I guess a case could be made for it being a chick flick.

But I maintain that Sunset is not. :-)

Eh, tell him it's about a guy who meets a pretty French girl and they spend the day getting to know each other. That night they have sex in a park and the next morning he bounces, saying he'll meet her in six months, but doesn't even exchange digits with her. The no-strings sex should be the clincher...if you don't tell him you don't actually see any action.

Ad Fab - I know its not a flick bu its about as chick as you can get and I'd stope anything to watch Patsy and Eddie.

My Fair Lady - Even though the costumes and sets are wonderful and AUdrey Hepburn is loverly to look at, the best thing about this movie is the back and forth of the relationship between Eliza and Prof. Higgins.

Harold & Maude - The biggest fans of this movie are girls. But only the special variety. Girls have shown me things in this movie I never noticed.

The Red Violin - Does this count?

46. "i have to disagree with Harold and Maude to the nth degree"
In response to Reply # 38

harold and maude is in no way shape or form a "chick flick". it is one of my favourite movies of all time. the main character is a guy, as to not fall under the cvharacteristics of a "chick flick" as stated above. it is twisted enough to garner fans of all genres of film. comedy, drama, parody, maybe not action, but there is an army scene.

yes, men love this film, but because its an amazing film, and i just cant accept something so cinematicly eventful as Harold and Maude to be downgraded to the title of "chick flick".

excuse my zest, i just became very heated and intense regarding this perticular film.

I am pretty much ambivlent to the movie, one way or the other. I've seen it a couple of times, first by myself and then with chicks I was in relationships with. The first time I saw it I didn't "get" it, and it was just a slight movie to me.

Then when I had these girls "show" it to me, the way I "showed" them films like A Night at the Opera & Raging Bull, they introduced a whole different feeling to the movie that I was too dense to pick up on my own.

Only then did I pick up on the touching humor of the movie and the beauty of their relationship transcending all the standard movie criteria. It's a wonderful film for the reaosn you have stated, I have stated, and for reasons many other folks may bring up.

Just for me if we're going by the chick flick = movies that explore relationships above everything else (which is what every chick I've ever known does), then H&M qualifies, and I think my testes will back me on this one, as a "chick flick". Its not a "chick flick" like How To Make An American Quilt or Boys on the Side, but its still pretty estrogenic.

EDITED TO SAY:

But if you say its not, its cool. Like I said I can go either way. I think people who dig it like you apparently do don't like the negative connotations brought about by "chick flick". But I never meant it negatively.

Because it seemed pretty girly but I really liked it.

And how about movie musicals in general? Sound of Music? West Side Story?

Not even Grease.. and it's not a "guy" thing or anything either.. I think it's because I like movies that project some type of reality or relatable factor.. I don't get that out of musical movies, the dialogue and story get lost in translation for me among the singing and dancing... I do like a good play though, but it's more of a live experience thing.

Movie Musicals are the only genre that I will see no matter what, because I figure even the worst of them haave to be slightly good simply because there is song and dnce numbers.

Hell, I even own Newsies.

In response to Reply # 0

It's got Cher and an emasculated Danny Aiello, doesn't that qualify?

I'd repeat Sleepless in Seattle, though it could be argued to transcend the genre's limitations. But When Harry Met Sally is more like an episode of Seinfeld to me.

And speaking of TV, two recent episodes of Friends reruns I caught recently were as good as any chick flick (one where they watch the old home movies of Rachel's prom night, and the second part of the "on a break" episode were Schwimmer and Aniston finally split).

Benny & Joon is good enough.

Conspiracy Theory is sorta like a chick flick too.

one of my faves. It's got a female perspectives (Nicole Holofcener directed it) but it's even interesting to guys cos it tries to show women on a subtle level, not just a "women are kooky/crazy" aspect that many rom-coms take on. Also, it's pretty universal since it's about friendship.

it's got baseball at the center, but it's a chick flick under the corollary that the woman's ideal of love is the real heart of the story.

That said, it's the best chick flick ever.
