"Unpopular Opinions You Support"

Anime: if it wasn't pretty, that shit would bore me.

I can safely say that The Chronicles of Riddick was the Worst Movie of 2004.

The Seven Samurai: it's a great movie, but too fucking long. I'm almost never gonna be in the mindstate to watch a meticulously paced 3 1/2 hour movie.

Add on.

don't forget the soundtracks and the well-thought-out storylines (for the anime built around the already-established manga)

ouch man. good luck with this one.

>Add on.

Oldboy is overrated. it's a great flick, but no damn 8.5 on the imdb scale.

Anna Kournikova is overrated. Sharapova has replaced her and a lot of people don't even know it.

that Superbowl GoDaddy.com commercial was boring. so was the full version on the website.
in fact, the only redeeming quality was the bikini pictures of the girl that started circulating.

1. Anime is pretty and still bores me.

2. I think M. Night Shyamalan gets hated on. I think he's a decent director and story teller who's following in the footsteps of Hitchcock and The Twilight Zone. The Village was a good movie. (For the purpose of this post let's pretend Signs never happened, though)

3. Napoleon Dynamite was neither the worst movie ever nor the best movie ever, but rather fell somewhere in between.

4. Godfather 3 wasn't *that* bad.

5. National Treasure, on the other hand, was a real stinker.

Virgin Suicides was good too. I was all set to support her, as she is another female filmmaker, and we need more of those, but many part of the film were straight up offensive, and I know a lot of Japanese folks had problems with it.

this film perpetuates bullshit stereotypes of the japanese and makes them look like fools in their own fuckin country no less, while the white americans act composed confused by the 'silly' behavior these strange people possess. the condescension is subtle, but most certainly there none the less. Western (as in 'white'), not cowboys and indians) movies do this type of thing alllllll the time

lock n loll? japanese women who really want to have sex, but pretend not to???? that shit is the oldest stuff in the world. even if this was her attempt at exaggerating Bill Murray and Scarlett's isolation in the country, shes smart enough not to resort to such offensive tactics... or maybe shes not

I just thought it was an unfunny scene, not a stereotype. I've never heard that one before, that might just be me.

As for "lock n loll"...would it have been okay if he said "rock n roll"? Is the idea of him liking rock n roll racist, or the Ls for Rs, cuz it's not like the latter is an unsubstantiated stereotype. Or was it the combo of both? I'm just trying to see where you're coming from.

and even though it may be true, it has always been portrayed in a negative light. It becomes racist in its exaggeration, and *emphasis*. attention was placed on that scene because 'its funny' the way japanese people say rs like ls 'is funny'. The scene was meant to be humorous, which is why it was offensive. If Bill Murray had just been having a regular conversation with a Japanese man and he had casually said the term 'rock n roll' as he pronounced it, it would not have been so offsensive. Most black folks have full lips, most asian folks have almond eyes, this is the truth, but when we see old caricatures of the two, we dont accept them as being plain old factual, because they are meant to be humorous implying their inferiority to whites. its racist and just another example of bullshit western condescension

Co-sign with Dr. No. "Racist" is a bit too harsh a term. Not to defend the behavior but the fact is that it does exist and I thought Coppola did a decent job portraying it. And you gotta keep in mind that this movie isn't setting out to be told objectively. Don't shoot the messenger, you dig?

>a more talented filmmaker could have found better ways of
>empahsizing that isolation, as i said before.

Well...obviously, if they are more talented then that suggests they'd be better at doing stuff. What filmmakers did you have in mind, specifically? And what ways do you think she could have portrayed their culture shock, from their point of view, without appearing to be at least a little condescending and somewhat racist?

>the way she *tried* to do it was a cop out and ignorant

Well, you could argue that such ethnocentricity is a cop out and ignorant, so maybe Copolla's approach was dead on.

But the whole idea of this thread is that these are unpopular opinions, so I don't think any of us should feel the need to justify our feelings to the opposition.

im sorry..but i have to say that foreign = funny is something thats been taken for granted for a long long time. and i dont think its wrong, because its funny. old people are funny, little kids are cute and funny, animals are funny..these are just standards...does it smack of racism and xenophobia? maybe, but i dont think it has to, and to exploit these situations or archetypes for comedic effect is hardly racist, imo.

to me, being racist is being racist. its like a year or two ago people kept getting upset by the "big black guy that's surprispingly intelligent and well-spoken" type that kept showing up in comedies claiming its racist. well maybe it was in certain cases, but i think people should be upset by the laziness and recycling of the type, in terms of artistic invention or lack thereof, more than by any racist statement being made.

so the lock n loll isnt bad because its racist...it isnt...its bad because its played and not funny.

japanese people are shorter?
they can't distinguish rs from ls?

this is brilliant comedy?

I wouldn't say the Rs and Ls is racist though, since they were actually in Japan, and it's just a fact that east asian languages don't use those sounds so they can't distinguish them (or only use one of them). English speaking people have a similar problem with some other languages... but of course, we'll never know...

Most of the people I know that went to see it thought it was bad.

I liked it though. But mostly for the same reason I liked Pitch Black - formulaic genre piece designed so that Vin Diesel can act like a badass 80s action hero.

Considering he's really a geeky role playing gamer, that's really damn amusing to me.

but really though, Anime? What's with the hype? I mean, there is beauty in Spirited Away and Mononoke and Akira and Ghost (all of which I've seen and which give me pounding headaches), but they pale in comparison next to Fantasia, the single most amazing piece of animation ever. Or Sleeping Beauty or Lady and the Tramp or Snow White for that matter. The Land of the Rising Sun has nothing on Disney classics. Nothing.

And I'm not the biggest fan of anime myself, but just understand that it has an appeal FAAAAAAR beyond visuals. It's used as a much broader medium of expression than American animation usually is, I mean Disney movies outside of Fantasia are just the same kiddy-pleasing fairy tale over and over

All kinds of black folks dug them movies. I would really like to believe that it's just the white folks making flicks like Barbershop and Soulplane box office hits, but nope, a whole gang of us are loving them too.

I mean yeah a reassuring number of us are out there are put off, offended or at best disinterested in those movies...but the average moviegoer? I have a lot of family members and some friends that I just have to agree to disagree whenever the topic of movies come up.

Yes.

Lucas is our Walt Disney. A talented filmmaker who made some very major works at an early age and then became more focused on expanding the medium and building an empire than his artistic development. His impact on technology and the business of cinema is huge (both good and bad). And regardless of it's artistic merit, you count on one hand the number of films as influential as Star Wars.

Spielberg is our Cecil B. DeMille. An extremely talented craftsman a great showman, and the most widely known filmmaker of his day. But nothing much beyond that. Spielberg is possibly the most talented pure director of screen action of all time. He will forever be cherished by film lovers. But his impact on the medium will pale in comparison to Lucas's.

yeah right TMNT 2 was cheesy

the comic relief was cheesy except for donatello on the clown in the mall in the beginning. Kino almost saved it but he shoulda had more action. and they were BAD NINJAS! when they snuck into TGRI they were loud as fuck and got schooled by the foot whom were acting like actuall ninjas

they were sooo much more hardcore in the first

plus how are they just gonna drop Casey Jones like that?? did they forget that him and April fell in love? he shoulda had more action too

I only saw the 'fourth' and 'fifth' chapters about a month or

have a suspended belief in trying to care about the
characters.

and they are:

the convulted timeline thing is the only thing that makes the movie good... it takes what would be a terribly boring movie if told chronologically, and makes it interesting. the sheer fact that there was a way to make a movie that, if chronological, would be so ridiculously boring interesting needs to be appreciated.

plus benicio is the man.

also, Anthony Michael Hall was in the same league as Eddie Murphy and Chevey Chase when it comes to pure comedic acting perfomances (just performances...not fame or success) in the 1980s. dude was on fire like that.

"Fargo" is wildly overrated.

And I'll even go as far to say that most, but not all, of the Coen Brothers movies are far superior to "Fargo" (exceptions being "Intolerable Cruelty," "Ladykillers," and maybe "Hudsucker Proxy.")

In response to Reply # 0

Rudy is the best sports film ever made

Waterworld was worth every penny of its budget

Law & Order is the most boring show on television

Tom Hanks should have won an Oscar for A League of Their Own

There's maybe an hour's worth of LOTR material worth watching

He Got Game is Spike's second best film

Crash is the best film of 2005 (thus far)

30 Days is the best show of 2005 (thus far)

aaaaaand....

13 Going on 30 was a damn good movie!!!
