so many memorable scenes:

* the first half hr/rescue...totally awesome
* mace windu/palatine/anakin scene
* obi wan vs greivious!!
* yoda vs palatine while simultaneously obi wan vs vader
* obi wan's speech to vader/anakin at the end, tragic maaaan...

very emotional movie, a lot of scenes were hard to watch because of the disturbance (Lucas wasn't joking when he said this one was violent..)

The last 40 minutes alone (and the first half hour)... Wow...

I'll probably go back and watch again on Sunday or Wednesday... I don't smoke but I think I need a cigarette. Very satisfied. Tied up almost everything...

The romantic dialogue was much more realistic this time (thank you Script Doctor!!!), the only uncomfortable moment was Darth's scream (think Kirk yelling KHAAAAAANNNNNNN *geek off*).

Yeah.

I'm gonna absorb this one for awhile...

Poor Natalie Portman.

The first half hour and last 40 minutes were great. I think we can safely pinpoint where Spielberg helped out.

George still can't write dialogue. And if we didn't know who the characters were, it would be hard to care what happens to them.

Hayden was much, much better in this than Episode II.

If there are questions (such as why Grievous was coughing so much), I encourage everyone to watch the Clone Wars.

Despite its flaws, I enjoyed it a lot. Plan to see it again, this time in digital.

Was coughing because Mace fucked him up at the end of the Clone Wars. As he was escaping with Palpatine, Mace came up and knocked him back with the force and crushed his chest plate. He was a cyborg, so he had human parts. That's why he was coughing so much. There were a lot of subtle Clone Wars references in the movie.
Nobody mentioned Sam Jack's "not going out like a punk" (his words) death?

I didn't think it was as "noble" as it should have been. It was rife with tension and all, but still...

I didn't like it. I found more moments where I was laughing at the film or groaning than honestly moved. The fight scenes were stellar but any scene involving plot* or the love story were horrid. The asterisk on plot is for Palatine who stole the show. Every scene he was in was great.
The fans will love it, so in that case Lucas succeeded. I just don't think audiences who aren't wholly invested already in the story will buy into it. I would say half of the audience at the 12:45 AM showing I went to walked out disappointed.
It was IMO essentially a video game. Basic story points to get you from battle to battle.

Everything that everyone has said is pretty much on point.

It's better than the last two Star Wars flicks, maybe even better than Return of the Jedi.

-The acting--outside of Ewan McGregor and Ian McDormid (sp), who were great--is terrible.
-The dialogue is bad.
-General Greivous is much less cool than I'd hoped.
-The action is great, really well done; apparently Lucas watched the Lord of the Rings movies.
-It's a fitting close to the series.
-Yoda fighting is much cooler and less laughable this time around.
-Christopher Lee goes out like a punk--AGAIN.

It was very surprisingly good. I wish Eps 1 & 2 had been up to this level...

No shit, "Clerks" gave birth to the revisionist view of the Star Wars trilogy that's really fucking annoying.

Before "Clerks" came out, it was universally accepted that ROTJ was the best. Then after that Dante/Randall conversation in the movie, all of a sudden it was cool to say it was "Empire."

When people say "Empire" is the best, I like to quiz them as to why. About 99% of the time they say almost word for word, "It ends on such a down note, man. I mean, that's what life is, a series of down endings." As soon as they say that, they lose the argument. If you're gonna say you that you think "Empire" is the best, at least mention Yoda or something.

it just has a darker tone throughout: the Rebels are on the run and the Empire is kicking their ass with a vengeance, Vader goes around force-choking fools left and right, chops Luke's hand off and drops the "I am your father" bombshell... it just doesn't get any better than that.

...and to this day I like Jedi better. But if people like Empire better, fine; they've got to give a better reason why than "the bad guys are winning at the end."

Say its because of Yoda and the look at Jedi training or because there's actual plot development (Han and Leia falling in love, the problems with the hyper-drive). I just can't take people seriously when they say Empire is better because it ends with a downer. That's the Dante answer.

This is the first I've ever heard of it. I like Empire because it kicks ass. You get to see Luke's training. You get to meet Yoda. You get to find out about Darth being Luke's father. I don't know how many people saw that when it came out-I was 4 I think, and it was one of the first movies I remember seeing. And the fact that Darth was Luke's father-people didn't expect that shit!

Jedi is bomb-especially the first 1/2 or so, and of course the final battle. The Ewoks are lame. They are. I don't care what anyone says.

and I don't know anyone who says they like Empire best because "it ends on a down note / the bad guys are winning at the end" etc. There's alot of reasons people like it best, not the least of which because it's the best written and directed SW movie, but if I had to pick a single reason personally it's because Darth Vader is at the height of his power and is kicking everyone's ass left and right.

overall thought it was pretty bangin'. the crowd was hype and geeked out but it only added to the energy and hypeness everyone was vibin' off of. The movie itself is 80 percent action which is good and the last 45 minutes to an hour is incredible visually. Grievous was real ill but I still think Dooku is a lame character and Darth Maul would have been way better suited. The final battle between Anakin and Obi-Wan is nothing short of spectacular. I'll probably check this again about 2 more times.

this was as my roommate put it..."nutbustastic!" so much eye candy!! to finally see the anakin and obi-won fight scene was everything that any star wars fan could hope far and more. the open fight scenes. the way the story was told. how the senator got anakin to turn. so much wrapped up in it. in my mind it made up for the phantom menance. here is to hoping to the lucas changes his mind and does 3 more movies telling the story of what happens after return of the jedi.

As dope as it was seeing Mace beat the Palpatine down, I figured he was playing possum, knowing Anakin would come and save him, thus turning to the dark side in the process.

He even set it up by telling him to kill Dooku in the beginning, and making him feel guilty about killing someone who should be taken alive because it's not the "Jedi way." So by cutting of Mace's arm, he was in a messed-up way, trying to stay true to the Jedi.

Yep, Palpatine playing them all like a fucking piano.

He was in no way messed-up or otherwise trying to stay true to the Jedi way. He only wanted palpatine arrested because he figure he would still have a chance to learn how to keep those he loved from dying and still remain a Jedi. He was selfish. Everything he did was for himself. Which is the way of the Sith. Ironically it was his selfish actions that caused padame's suffering and death.

Why does he look like the only Jedi who WILL kill you?

Because he's sam jackson, that's why.

he hasn't really fit the last three movies, all this restrained peace talk--the whole time I'm expecting him to say, "It's the purple lightsaber that says 'bad motherfucker' on it".

But then he has that fight with the chancellor, yo, Sam jackson Is the wrong cat to mess with....

Great fucking movie.

- Palpatine was fantastic in every scene, his laughter, taunting and playing was really, really good.

- Grevious was not all that, but he looked good and the chase scene with him and Obi Wan was great.

- Obi Wan hacking Anakins legs off was fuucking brilliant. And then leaving him to die! G'yeah!

- I don't have a problem with the Anakin/Padme stuff, I thought it was 200% better than the other films, and I think they pulled it off.

- Palpatines seduction of Vader was awesome.

- The Midi Chlorian explanation...I liked it a lot, I had a feeling it was gonna be wack, but I liked it.

- Yoda, flipping on the clones once they were about to kill him.

- ORDER 66!!!!!!!! Ki Adi Mundi got jacked. haha So did blue girl. Ayala?

- Dooku what?! That was awesome. All the sith aside from Palpatine areusually wack and go out pretty easy. They are all just pawns.

more to come as it all sets in and I see it 10 more times.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD:

In Phantom Menace there was a lot of talk about Midi-Chlorians...some kind of strange DNA that dictates the strength/life of a Jedi...and indicates that one is a Jedi and there was suggestions that Anakin had no father and was born somehow **from** the Midi Chlorians.

Well..in Episode III. Palpatine while sitting down watching the opera or show with Anakin told him about a Sith Legend about a Sith Lord who learned how to manipulate the Midi Chlorians and could even create life through this manipulation, and save people from dying through their use.

He said that the sith lord also taught his apprentice (I beleive it to be Palapatine but he doesn't exactly say he was the apprentice) and the apprentice betrayed his master and killed him in his sleep.

Then he offers to teach anakin these things.

So basically I derive that....

Palpatine created Anakin through his manipulation of the Midi-Chlorians with the intention of breeding the strongest Sith apprentice ever.

remember later on palpatine admits that only one sith has ever been able to actually use the power to create/save life. that sith was his master, that is, i'm assuming that it was his master that he was telling the story about and that he killed in his sleep.

remember he said to anakin "there's only been one sith that could use this power, but perhaps together we can figure it out and you can save padme."

my point is, i don't think he created anakin. i don't see any evidence to support this theory.

His master created Anakin and the emperor killed his master so he could take thatnew apprentice on as his own.

One second he's all sad about beating down Sam Jackson, and like a second later he practically just says, "ah hell with it, Palpatine I'm ya boy."

The only way I could explain it was that he just thought he already fucked up good fashion killing the head of the Jedi, he might as well go all the way.

Basically that. And the fact that Lucas just needed 2 push the story along.

And my expectations were pretty high for this one, since I've heard pretty much nothing but good reviews coming into it.

The visuals were amazing, and the amount of epic fight scenes in this one was crazy. Off the top of my head, we got to see

Dooku vs Obi-Wan/Anakin
Grievous vs Obi-Wan
Windu vs Sidious
Yoda vs Sidious
Obi-Wan vs Anakin

The only real mystery in this one was how are these guys fighting all going to stay alive, since we all knew that Yoda, Vader, Obi-Wan, and Sidious are major players in the original trilogy, so I was wondering how they were gonna still have a climactic finish to the fights without killing each other off. Watching Anakin get burned alive and his other hand cut off was pretty tight. Seeing how Sidious got that fucked up scarred face was cool too. I always thought he was just some thousand year old dude and that's what he looked like regardless.

Also, I was wondering how Padme was going to die. I was thinking that Vader was gonna finish her off after she gave birth, and make his transition to the dark side a wrap, but it turns out that the premonitions that Anakin was having were right, and not placed in his head by the Sith, like I was thinking throughout the whole movie. It also showed that Palpatine was bullshitting Anakin about being able to save lives with the Dark Side of the force.

If it weren't for the entire theater yukking it up every time Yoda squinted his eyes funny, this would have been a nearly perfect experience for me. I'm not a big fan of applauding in the theater when nobody who had anything to do with the movie is in your presence, but I was expecting random applause and forced laughter, considering this is the end of life for a lot of people, so I was ready for it.

Good closure to the series, no more guessing, and now I gotta go out and watch Episode IV again.

Vader actually does bring balance to the force and fulfill Sith doctrine at the same time by killing his master in Return of the Jedi?
There's a bunch of other shit I'll probably pick up on when I go for my second viewing this afternoon.

"...most sistahs only recognize a good
man when he's a character in a shitty
movie, a shitty play, their favorite
daytime soap or a shitty book written
by a homosexual."
From Reggie Eggert's online review of
"Diary of a Mad Black Woman"

OKP Caswell on the kick assness that is Mace Windu:
"Why does he look like the only Jedi who WILL kill you? Because he's sam jackson, that's why."

I never really thought of it like that.

I just figured they misread it like Yoda suggested, and it turns out that his son is the one to bring balance.

What does Sith doctrine say? I mustve missed that part

because luke kills the last of the sith, which in reality is not emperor palpatine but vader. therefore yoda was right in his assumption that anakin was not the "chosen one."

hmmm... really though.. i think its the emperor who kills vader, remember luke hurt him, but palpatine fried the shit outta vader as vader (who i feel turned away from the darkside and back into anikin at this point) saves luke by going into the emperors lighning and picking up the emp and tossing him.. vader prob would have lived if he let the emperor kill luke..

now if what i think is true.. vader never really died a sith.. he actually dies as anikin because luke brought him back to the light.. and supposedly there will still be 1 and 1 because darth sidius spirit isnt dead and he can bring himself back (midi cholrens??).. so there is still 1 sith and 1 jedi..

Remember Yoda saying that the Sith are capable of keeping everything secret? I guess that's the explanation.

the jedi are peacekeepers and are really implemented in society to council and be neutral. when the war broke out, they joined only thinkin that they were fighting their natural enemy, the sith. but the deeper it got, the more involved they became. no matter what the jedi council could not sustain themselves in that atmosphere. yoda warned mace that their strong involvement in senate affairs would be disastrous. anakin was right in sayin that mace shouldnt kill palpatine (even though it was merely for his own selfish reasons) because it is not the jedi way. the jedi mixed too much into politics, and u really gotta hand it too palpatine...he set them up from day one.

Mace Windu derrived part of his power from the Dark Side.
He could resist more than the normal person, like Siddeous and Anakin.

thats one of the reasons he has always been one of my favorites.
and a reason he was soo badass. Dude took on an entire droid army by himself.

(From another conversation)
Also, Anakin did not bring balance to the force be killing Palpatine

If he did, there would be no Jedi or Sith at all.

Think about it. if there is a Yin, but no Yang, there is no balance. The only balance you could have would be to have an equal amount for the light/dark side, or no side at all (death to anyone that can manipulate the force) After Palpatine was dead, Luke was still a Jedi.
(wasn't formally knighted, but went through shit worse than the trials, his last test being bringing Anakin back to the light side)

At least that is what my boy who reads the books says, and as you watch the new movie it sort of follows that idea. It's like being possessed by the devil. e.g. as Anakin gets deeper into using the darkside, his eyes turn demon-like.

yes, anakin fell into lava and became darth vader. i'm glad everybody shot their wads off that. because the dialogue was still terrible, the lightsaber scenes weren't even very good, the CG still looks like CG, and the whole thing moved waaaaaaaay too quick. so many plot points remained insufficiently developped, mostly because lucas fucked around too much in the first two.

but i did believe anakin's descent, palpatine was decent, and the beginning space battle was great. 4 of 10.

any part with Portman/Christensen talking was literal torture..."no, I love you! I love you more!"

I don't mean to pick on Hayden but I've seen better actors in high school plays

visually stunning - the landscapes looked photo-realistic at times

horrible, horrible script with no Harrison Ford types to save it

all the political jargon? who gives a fuck...that was a huge problem in Episode II and it lingered around in this one too

the guy who played the Emperor was pretty good overall...but after he revealed himself as the Sith Lord he got a little over the top in some scenes

and the movie should've ended with Darth getting his mask (also sans one of the worst "noooooos" in modern cinema)

>any part with Portman/Christensen talking was literal
>torture..."no, I love you! I love you more!"

that wasn't quite as bad as "hold me like you did by the lakes of naboo." funny story--everyone in my theatre was trying not to laugh at bad lines. when that line hit, i literally groaned out loud so everyone could here me. completely unintentional, but christ. the entire theater started laughing.

>I don't mean to pick on Hayden but I've seen better actors in
>high school plays

i don't blame him, though. young actors need direction. lucas just wanted them to read the lines as quickly as possible so he could get back to ILM.

>visually stunning - the landscapes looked photo-realistic at
>times

still too CG for my tastes.

>the guy who played the Emperor was pretty good overall...but
>after he revealed himself as the Sith Lord he got a little
>over the top in some scenes

absolutely. the best thing about the emperor is how effortless he always seems in laying the smackdown. he seemed less like a bad ass and more like some subhuman goblin after his face was revealed.

>and the movie should've ended with Darth getting his mask
>(also sans one of the worst "noooooos" in modern cinema)

but it was cool to hear darth, in the mask, ask about padme. that was the one huge chill scene of the movie for me.

action flick, except with worse acting and better special effects.

Acting and writing are just TOO important to completely disregard, which Lucas does.

59. "Because "revenge" was more than juss a flick...(spoiler)"
In response to Reply # 0

This is not simply a review of the third and final installment of George Lucas' operatic prequel to the groundbreaking original trilogy of the late 70's and early 80's; this is an ode to the awe inspring feeling that i felt last night after leaving the midnight showing of "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith."

The movie itself is great, by no means perfect, and by no means comparable to the classic originals. It is by far tho, the best movie from the current trilogy, surpassing its predecessors quite handily. As far as im concerned, the 2 previous installements (The Phantom Menace and The Attack of the Clones) served their purpose effectively, by setting up this epic finale. The usual grievances are there: the bad acting, the sketchy and uneven plot, the mundane and uninspiring dialogue, and the overall sense of heartlessness. Yet despite its flaws, "revenge" left me with a sense i had not felt since watching episodes 4,5,6 as lil younglin. This might be do to the fact that "revenge" ties all the loose ends for " A New Hope", and is more closely related to the original movies. The feeling of seeing Darth Vader once more (along with other pre-cursors such as the buliding of the death star, the seperation of Luke and Leia, the exile of Obi-won and Yoda etc...)brought chills under my fitted cap. I will credit the sequence and the eventuality that this movie offers, but it is not its only accomplishment.

The movie is balanced quite well. The action sequences are remarkable, and appropriately well placed throughout the film; from the opening space battle to the absolutely engaging and exhausting final light saber fight between Anakin and Obi-won. The cinematography, or the the lack their of,since i assume every backdrop of scenery was computer generated, created a galaxy that one can only dream of being apart of. From the desert landscape of Tattoine, to the rich tropical texture of Naboo, every planet offered its own unique and breathtaking environment. The volcanic planet of Mustafar which serves as the backdrop for that final fight between apprentice and master is the most enthralling of all settings, and aided in the portrayal of Anakin's path to darkness. The scene in which Anakin is left dismembered, smoldering, screamin in pain and anger is one of the movies best. That performance, although not sustained by Hayden Christensen, further solidies the great villain Darth Vader will become. The standout acting, again lacking, are there from Ian McDiarmid as Senator Palpatine/Darth Sidious and Ewan Mcgregor as Obi-wan Kanobi. Mcgregor is especially memorable as the wisdom filled jedi knight, as he fullfills the role with unusual sincerity. The deep thinking and always mindful jedi master is the real star of this picture. With his performance you sense the camaraderie shared by him and Anakin, and the eventual fallout caused by the trappings of the darskide. It is one of the few relationships conveyed emotionally well by both actors. While the Anakin/Padme relationship is clearly more interesting, both actors in that situation are unable to bring it out convincingly on screen, which is a shame. There are other notable and memmorable pairings, Anakin and the Jedi Council, Anakin and Palpatine, Yoda and the wookies...

Ultimately the movie is great because it is a perfect set-up to an even better movie. What makes that movie better, and what makes the susbsequent follow-ups better, is because they are simply the originals. They are the blueprint in which "revenge" is built on. The Jedi, the empire, the rebellion, are all themes that the two contemporary prequels touched on, but never quite as in depth as this latest movie has. That is where i got that feeling, i merely borrowed it from my childhood. The concept of selflessness, the lure and attractivness of evil, the notion of balance and choice, and the promotion of liberty and justice are what we learn as children growing up. Therefore a strong sense of nostalgia plays its own part in that joyous and ambitious feeling one gets from Star Wars. A hopeful feeling... Although "revenge" ends with the newly formed Galactic Empire, there is that feeling again, creepin up on u, and soon you realize that Luke, Leia, and Hahn Solo will bring us "A New Hope".

May the force be with you all...

Thought the movie was dope. I really enjoyed it. There are elements that I like better from the original trilogy. This was a lot more exciting overall. But Empire was still done the best.

Does anyone think Luke was a pussy ass Jedi after watching Obi-Wan and Anakin in action?

hahahaaa!! i guess nostalgia clouds the mind. never realized it til now. but i guess the majority of opponents in luke's day were not very difficult. i was just trippin' on how that shit was like rapid fire in episode III.

on a side note, in return of the jedi...wasn't that kind of a sith thing to do when luke force chokes those big ass boarish looking guards at jabba's palace?

in that movie part of luke was toying with the idea of going to the dark side of the force...notice he is wearing all black like a sith (as was anakin in episode III) instead of the earth tones that most of the jedi wear. he was feeling vader calling for him the whole movie, he was probably being seduced...

luke in return of the jedi parallels anakin in episode III, its just at that final moment when the emperor tells luke to kill vader he makes the right decision.

but I thought it was definitely above average and much better than I expected it to be after the last two...

rather than focus on the negatives ...

- the teen Jedi who was fighting for his life and almost reached Bail Organa

- Palpatine was good

- plenty of lopping off of limbs and body parts

stuff i really didn't care for:

- Chewbacca = total fanboy pandering as he did nothing to add to what was going on

- some of the fights and battles were too busy and really rushed ... somehow they've taken a step back from some of the elegance of the Ep 1 & 2 lightsaber scenes. they were pretty devoid of tension (except maybe the Vader/Kenobi showdown)

- i was mostly bored by the first 15-20 minutes (initial battle scene)

stuff i laughed at:

- Vader's initial Frankenstein gait (i mean, it's realistic, but it looks goofy)

- the lovey dovey dialogue between Anakin & Padme

- Artoo had some fun moments, but he seems overequipped

- Yoda's great!

I thought it would have been MUCH better if he didn't have any emotion about Padme dying, just to show how cold blooded he'd gotten since become Darth Vader. He should've just been like, "Oh well, bitch had it coming..."

The only sad part about this is that by showing Yoda fight they really gave away how strong he was. In Empire you got the feeling that he was pretty much the baddest jedi out there, but the Emperor kinda played him for a sucka, just laughing and throwing shit at him.

You know, we see him fight in two big showdowns, and both times even with him flipping around and swinging, he kinda gets punked out.

the Daffy Duck flip out in II was ridiculous.

things were a bit toned down in III, but it would've been better if Palpy had been shown kind of a being coward, knowing that he could actually lose to Yoda and having him run off to safety.

nothing explains Yoda in Episode V, though - why was he so batty and jerky?! was he hiding his true nature (Jedi master) with his facade (annoying prankster)? was he just so loopy from all of the years of solitude? senility? what?

Because everything he had done - turning to the dark side, turning against the Jedi, what he did to Mace Windu and the younglings, etc - was to save her so basically he realized he did all that dumb shit for nothing.

exactly. they did it the right way because then you really feel for Vader.. the whole time leading up to this film you wonder what it was that turned him to the darkside... which we find out is his love for Padme. And the fact that he did it all for her and couldnt save her shows how tormented his soul has become. i thought it was powerful the way he did it.

i just think there was no need for Chewie to be there. it's weird that, presumably Chewie was a high-ranking Wookiee official or something and he just ends up being Han's sidekick. (yeah, i know about the life debt crap, but really ...)

>Wow. That really set the tone 4 me.

i just didn't care for what was going on. the dialogue, though punctuated with a few strands of actual emotion, mostly had the tone of "oh, Anakin, just look at the trouble we've gotten ourselves into!"

those little buzzy robot things were too adorable to actually to actually convey any threat.

i wish they had actually shown more of a process of Vader becoming Vader (physically). instead of just having him stumble off the table immediately after surgery (dumb), they could've shown Vader rehabilitating in some way to use his new mechanical body ... and then, seeing him walk in a more fitting, majestic way.

>I was just glad he didnt tell her she wasnt like sand again
>this time

hahaha. i'll toss out an LOL @ Anakin watching her comb her hair.

also, how could anybody not know about their relationship?

what was Padme telling people when she was obviously pregnant and they would ask about it?

"whose is it? uh, nobody's. let's order pizza!"

>>- Artoo had some fun moments, but he seems overequipped
>Still shocked peeps werent feelin this

as someone mentioned somewhere else, he's basically a robotic swiss army knife in I-III. in IV, he falls over and can't get himself up - lame.

>>- Yoda's great!
>
>Much better this time than last time. Way 2 lose all the flips
>n shit Luc. Kudos!

yes, much less ridiculous. i found, though, that Lucas was playing too much on the "oh, Yoda's adorable and old - NO, HE'S A BADASS!" thing.

Couldnt agree more. I even saw some still footage awhile back that showed more of this process so apparently it got cut & didnt make it 2 the final reel. I hear theres more violent footage that Lucas had 2 take out 2 keep even the PG-13 rating so hopefully all this will be on the DVD. If so, this will be the 1st DVD of the prequels that I actually end up owning.

Ok I get it now. I still dug it when he fucked up them droids. Maybe by the time ep 4 came around his skillz had worn out & he was just a shadow of his former self? That's how I'll look @ it I guess.

I was disapointed with the lack of Wookies as well. Waste of having a scene on Kashyyk.

They are some incredible dumb fucks. This massive search for the dark sith lord and he's right beside them? Don't giv eme that cloaking his true self shit either. 'Bad Ass' Yoda (as he shall now be called) should have figured that out a while ago.

In short, the movie was the best out of the new trilogy by far. As long as the weren't talking, that is. If I were Mace, as soon as Palpatine/Sidious stopped that electroshock his head would have come off. Mildly corny, but effective, flourish to break the window so he has something to get thrown out of. Anakin went thru the rest of the movie with a stone ice grill the rest of the movie.

Favorite part of the movie: Hearing the complete strains of 'Imperial March' as he is annointed as Darth Vader. That along almost made up for Jar Jar. Almost. I'm still mad he had a cameo, even though he didn't speak. If I were Anakin/Darth I'd have found him and cut his head off for GP.

I can't buy that. The cartoon made him out to be ill as shit, sonning Jedi's left and right. He killed at least seven of them himself. I blame his poor showing on getting fucked up by Windu.

man, if you are reading down this far and still haven't gone to see it, don't listen to the haters. SEE that shit. if you are glancingly interested in star wars the lil' gems they drop throughout are well worth it.

this is not hate....BUT:

i watched the CLONE WARS marathon this weekend, and as far as story and action, wasn't the Clone Wars cartoon better? The jedi action, the stories, seeing more of the Star Wars universe. iono, my only disappointment with EP 3 is that it did not outshine the cartoon.

But still, off the hizzle. oh and the trailer ruined the "Lord Vader....rise" moment.

I just have one question if anybody knows the answer... why doesn't Vader/Anakin remember R2 and 3CPO in the original trilogy? The droids minds were wiped but shouldn't Vader remember his own creations? Or did he remember them and I just forgot? Iono...

apparently, leaving the scene in fucked with the rhythm that Lucas was going for ...

Vader asks about Padme, and Palpy lies to him and says that he (Vader) killed her. then, Vader howls that ridiculous "NOOOOoooOOOoOOoOOoOoOo!"

in the scene that was cut, Vader finishes his howl, then asks about Artoo and Threepio.

Vader: "... and R2D2 and C-3PO?"

Palpy: "?"

Vader: "my droids."

Palpy: "ah, yes! your droids ... they were ... uh ... EATEN BY YODA!"

Vader: "eaten by Yoda?! but--"

Palpy: "tut tut, if you don't remember, it is possibly due to the amount of pain reducing chemicals we have injected into your body ... which we could not have used without THE DARK SIDE OF THE FORCE!"

Vader: "but, Yoda was small and to eat a droid the size of--"

Palpy: "pish-posh! i believe Yoda's exact words were, 'droids! MMM, delicious! eat them, i will!' then, he ate them, mumbling something about 'eat or eat not, there is no try ...' useless, old space gnome."

Vader: "i have trouble believing--"

Palpy: "do you have trouble believing in THE DARK SIDE OF THE FORCE? that the SITH have delivered you from a lifetime of fence-sitting servitude with the Jedi Order?"

Vader: "..."

Palpy: "i thought so. come, we have an appointment to make. Governor Tarkin is having a 'name this gigantic sphere-shaped weapon of ultimate destruction and final defeat of those who would oppose us' contest in the break room."

Vader: "yes, master."

not too many people there. star wars fever must not be that big down here in the south. anyways, i thought it was a pretty solid film. great action, not so great dialouge, but it tied everything together very well. i would have liked to see more of anakin/darth vader in full uniform. this might be a stupid question, but did james earl jones come back for the voice or was it a different actor, i couldn't tell?

For the past couple years I haven't been really a fan of the series, but this one was good. I still can't understand how people can rag on the acting and dialouge considering they're shit in all of them anyways. That was the best one that Lucas directed.

For me and my sister, it is a tradition. My mother (a sci-fi fan) took us as wee girls to see Star Wars on opening weekend in the 70s and two more times after that (part 5 and 6). My sister goes to MIT and got free tickets, so we had to go.

I liked this movie and will see it again...soon. Some of the dialogue was deep and so applicable to what is going on today (patriotism, war, red states, blue states, neo-cons, etc.) that it was scary. Anakin could be any young person who has great talent or potential and is confused about where he should be as far as leadership or politics. Unfortunately, the stress drove him crazy and created an even darker, more powerful pawn who was really a threat to both sides. Had Padme lived he would not have stopped at being Sidious' right hand.

Other than that it was quite entertaining.

ok, it was better than the other prequels.
ok, i didn't expect it to be great.
but i guess i am just tired to Lucas fucking shit up.
Terrible dialogue as usual.
Flat acting as usual (but i blame weak directing and the green screen factor, more than i do the talent of the cast)
terrible execution of conveying the passage of time (that pregnancy felt like it lasted about a month, and anakin flipped over to the darkside and became vader way too quick.

it was fun, the fight scenes were cool, but it really wasn't that good. i think that a lot of folks who liked it will change their mminds once the excitement has worn off and they see it again. that is how i feel about episode II.

i have given into hate and come to the darkside. so fuck lucas and his mickey mouse hackery. oh, and am i the only one that is over yoda jumping all over the place like a kung-fu meth head?
i guess it's all that diet pepsi he's been drinking.

My sister asked me how Anakin was able to withstand all the pain only seconds after getting into the suit. Does everyone who goes to the dark side get a mechanical suit? And why on earth did the general keep coughing...he didn't have any lungs! At least they weren't where they should have been, next to his heart.

She also asked me how could Padme marry and have Anikin's baby without anyone noticing, since they were living in the same house?

No way. I started thinking about it more afterwards. I am psyched to see it, again.

First of all Yoda is too little not to have jumped all over. What's he gonna do? Stand there and let folks kick him around like a football? Also, I thought Yoda was much better this time around, esp. when he was using the Force to knock people out.

As to the question of why Grievous is coughing so much, you have to see the Clone Wars shorts. Short answer is, Mace Windu put an ass whooping on Grievous and the clones.

Talking Points (in no certian order)

-Hayden was much better than in episode 2 (which isn't sayin much). Plus he didnt his hair was much more Star Wars-ish than Nsync-ish like the last one.

-If Lucas had done a better job w/ the first 2, this one could have been better(I still loved this one though). Example, Anakins turning to the dark side happened way to fast, which could have been set up better had there not been all this politics, trade federation, underwater city crap that had nothing to do with the plot.

-Did I miss it in Clone Wars, that Dooku was a Sith Lord. I dont remember that being made clear.

-The love lines b/w Anakin and Padme were totally lame. "You're beautiful. You're blind. I'm blinded love." wretch!

-Some action was unnecessary but still cool

-Was Grevious enen in ep. II. I dont remember him.

-Didnt anybody catch the knock on Bush? Vader: "You're either with me or you are my enemy." Bush: "You're either with us or against us" Obi Wan: "Only Siths deal in absolutes" Bush = Sith

-"It's the purple lightsaber. The one that says bad motherfucker on it." That shit is funny.

Was the actor who played Palpatine/the Emperor the same as the actor as the original?

Also, I still think Palpatine could have planted the thought of Padme's death in Anakin, and it came true on some self-fulfilling prophecy tip. She dies because she lost the will to live...she lost the will to live becuase of Anakins betryal.

And on the whole immaculate conception of Anakin. I don't think that would have been a plot point unless it was of some significance to the cast we know. This movie offered the only possible explination. It could have been Palpatines master who concieved him thru the midi-chlorians. All that would have happened before episode I. Palpatine could have been training in the dark side while persuing his political career. That's how most politicians do it, anyway.

I thought it was dope, I want to see it again.

Early draft scripts of Star Wars identified the Emperor as Cos Dashit, who ruled from the Imperial throneworld of Alderaan. The Emperor first appeared on film in The Empire Strikes Back. He was played by an old woman wearing prosthetic makeup, with chimpanzee eyes superimposed in post-production into darkened eye sockets in order to create a truly unsettling image. Palpatine's voice was provided by Clive Revill for Empire. For Jedi and all subsequent films, Palpatine was played by actor Ian McDiarmid.

I really liked it, but the acting i thought was corny between Anikan and Padme. And cosign to everyone who said the Vader "Nooooooo" at the end was trash, and how easily he shifted to the darkside.

Its still got me alil off because of how violent Vader was. I mean dude took out all those kids. Obi and Yoda def held it down with the light sabers and Obi truely screwed vader in the end.

MACE is the TRUTH for real, he took out the chanceller by himself, i mean Yoda could barely do that

At least it filled in all the holes leading into episode IV. I'll see it again, but not until it gets to DVD.

The acting was terrible, the dialogue made me cringe, but I loved it. The tone of the movie was much darker than I expected, a lot darker than Empire. The fight with Grevious was amazing! The first scene was great. Seeing the Vader costume for the first time was a great experience.

Ehhhhh I dont know about that. I just watched Empire again this wknd & it still tops Sith. I mean you got Han guttin his ton ton & puttin Luke's face up against its guts just 2 stay warm. Luke beheading Vadar in the cave then seeing his own bloody head inside the helmet. Han's freezing. Luke's arm getting cut off.

And some of it wasn't that good.

- the opening scene was kinda boring and somewhat kiddie with all the droids saying "uh oh"

- R2D2 was way too goofy

- Palpatine & Yoda stole the show

- it was great to see the Wookies, but they needed more screen time, and we didn't really need Chewbacca

- The Order 66 scenes with the killing of the jedi were well done and quite emotional

- General Grevious wasn't that impressive. He looked like a big mutant version of those droid soldiers Lucas has become obsessed with. And he ran like he had to take a shit.

- Anakin killing children was a bold move to put in a family film

- A lot of the action scenes looked like nothing put expensive light shows. Like the part with Obi Wan riding that big creature. Sometimes you can't really tell what's going on.

- decapitations everywhere. Lucas is a sick sick man

Overall, I think it started off weak but picked up in the middle. The last half was great.

If you really think about it, from a psychological standpoint, a lot of the 'geeks' that are into this kinda thing are socially inept, and therefore fit in to the 'cheesy' line characteristics of our everyday language anyway,

maybe thats why lucas doesnt feel he needs to have the greatest script, most of his followers adhere to the socially akward dialogue anyway

i dunno, just something to think about

considering the first two and how everything had to tie in to the originals.

clearly better than I & II but still lacking that intangible that the OGs had ("intangible" I sound like an asshole)

any and all interaction between Anakin and Padme continued to be absolute torture. I laughed out loud when she said "you're breaking my heart!" bad acting + no chemistry makes for horrible cinema (see: Pearl Harbor). it was a lesser movie every time they shared a scene..

the inclusion of Wookies was pretty pointless other than to bring back (and market) Chewy. I liked the idea of Chewy just being an average joe type Wookie rather than someone of any importance.. no big thing though, and none of it hurt the movie.

Anakin's actual transformation...eh

the "Code 66" killing of the Jedi was gangsta. well done.

and I kinda dug Greivous. i've never seen Clone Wars

some great action/effects. solid overall.

I'd give it a B

I think that was more of Lucas living a dream out. He intended for Wookies to be in Return of The Jedi and not Ewoks, but it did not happen. I think he just always wanted to see it.

all the flaws i missed last time round (cos i wasnt expecting anything remotely good and was prepared for the worse so was pleasantly surprised) came into horrble focus. sorry, but the acting is fucking crap. everyone acts like theyre stuff, stilted like theyre from some victorian play, the dialogue is still hammy, and as for the plot, there isnt that much there really (maybe this is just cos few films are up to repeated viewings) - it didnt seem very complex at all, just pretty basic but shrouded by tedious gibberish. lots of things werent realy explained properly or given much depth, it was like they were just trying to resolve things to make it match up with episode 4. but if padame died on the operating table, how is it that in the later films, leia says she remembers her mother? the vader transformation at the end is also far too quick, didnt have any drama, was basically like the old frankenstein thing, i would have liked to know more about how his costume cane to be or maybe just see it last a bit longer. and the birth of luke and leia was stupid. one minute shes going AUUAAHAHAHAAHAAGHGHGHGHGHG in pain, next minute, 'LUKE', AAAHAHAHAHAHGHGHGHGH 'LEIA' and then all of a sudden shes dead. it was like they thought oh dear, we have ten minutes left, we need to wrap everything up really quickly here guys. plus, sorry, but some of the effects were just a bit ropey, expecialy that lava scene. the other thing is that the scenes just whiz by every two minutes more or less, it feels a bit too quick, a bit shallow even. perhaps they were trying to hide something.

in conclusion, i hope lucas retires now. the last three films havent really added anything to the first three. in fact, theyve sullied SW, for me, at least. its 'completion', sure, but thats a seriously overrated concept if these are anything to go by. if he was going to do these prequels, he should have done them in the 80s.

Yep. That's the same attitude the NYT had about ESB. Matter of fact, Mark, Carrie and Harrison hated their lines, but that's different huh?! Star Wars fans are a bazaar bunch. They BITCH and Moan about the dialog, claim that Lucas wasted time in the first two movies, shred his directing skills, make post on message boards just to complain how bad it was, pick apart things that would make George Lucas tell you to "Get a life". But then will see the film several times and be the first to buy the DVD when it drops. Weird I tell ya.

in the originals, Ford, Fisher, and Guinness, brought alot of personality to their characters. Would any of us have even cared about Ewan's Obi-Wan if it wasn't for Alec Guiness?

and Lucas' sense of humor is so awful now. the only scenes you laugh at aren't intended to be funny. ok well everyone did laugh when Yoda took out Palpatine's guards like that, but still, there's no great lines like "Traveling through hyperspace aint like dusting crops boy".

I mean, when a little green puppet out performs your primary actors there's a bit of a problem.

(Talking about George Lucas): "He doesn't really understand the nature of acting. He's like 'It's right there, it's right there. I wrote it, it's there, just do it.' But you can't just do it that easily."

Knowing how to direct or get the best out of the actors is a weakness for Lucas. He just wanted them to read the lines.

In a green room talking to tennisballs, you need a director to um... direct. i have seen those actors in other films and they are competent if not talented. but you give em bad dialogue and fail to lead them through your vision, and there is bound to be problems. at least hamil and ford could act opposite puppets.

She went from ruling a fucking planet at age 14, and being a badass at that ("I will not condone a course of action that will lead my people to war"...vote of no confidence), to being a blithering pregnant idiot.

She should have opposed this whole thing politically. Which would have been cool actually, causing more tension between her and Anakin. Plus, she's older and more mature than Anakin. The previous episodes showed this. Here, she was like a 12 year old girl and Anakin was Justin Timberlake. She spent this entire episode out of character.

peace.

Saw it thursday, and still not sure what i think. Visually impressive...
The end was the most redeeming part of the film. Palpatine's puppeteering was not implied quite as strongly as i thought it might be.

I share alot of the same gripes that i am reading in the rest of this thread.

I will say that alot of the questions and speculation (the ones that deal specifically with the events in the movie) that I am reading in this thread can be answered/explained better if you read the novel based on the screen play (Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stove)...

After reading the book, the movie i conjured in my head was a bit better
than the one i spent $10 to see...

still better than the other films on offer right now.

Maybe i'll feel better about it after i see it again this week.

But a masterpiece nonetheless. George Lucas is the idiot savant of cinema. Can't write, can't direct thespians, corny sense of humor, over-reliant on visual effects. But the final product is a higher stakes drama than any I've seen in years.

Like the later works of Phil Spector: really dumb, but grander and more powerful than almost any smart music out there.

...the movie was great...did n e one else notice @ the end of episode 6, when Obi 1, Yoda, and Darth appear as "spirits/ghosts" when every1's celebrating their victory...how they replaced the OLD Darth Vader (ugly white man) w/ Hayden...now of course this is the digi mastered version...shit tripped me out the 1st time i saw it becuz i was expecting the ugly old white man that played darth in the Return of the Jedi (epi 6)...wow

If somebody told me I had only one hour to live, I’d spend it choking a white man. I’d do it nice and slow."

In response to Reply # 0

Any other movie with dialouge and storytelling that bad I would have loathed, but since it was Star Wars I'm giving it a pass. If Lucas could have at least tried to get emotion out of his actors I'd have been happy with the horrible dialouge. I'm not blaming the actors (even Hayden) because I know they're capable of better things. If I could have seen one ounce of chemistry between Hayden and Natalie I would have bought Anakin's turn a lot more. He loved her because he kept telling us he loved her not because they convinced us. Ewan and Ian were the only people who seemed to get into character. Alot of the plot resolutions almost seemed like an afterthought (wiping 3PO's memory) rather than a natural part of the story. Despite its shortcomings, I did enjoy the movie. Its just frustrating that in the hands of a more capable director it could have been so much better.

or at least a story hugely driven by love? cos in some ways, its your basic 'man loves woman, will do anything for her, compromises his principles for womans well being, it backfires in his face, bitterness and anger over relationship and lost love fuels embittered quest for the rest of his days' type deal IMO. basically, it was love that killed anakin and lost love that drove darth to the dark side in many ways. im surprised he didnt want to kill the emperor at the end though, as it was his fault he ended up how he did.

Love is the motivating factor 4 the main character's actions. But it's really just a minor plot point 2 show a lot of action.

despite the sucky/stiff one-liners from Hayden esp..and the plastic romantic vibe b/w him and Portman everything else was what I expected. Besides like one commentator aptly wrote: "If I wanted Shakesperean line performances I would go to see a Shakespeare play." Its Star Wars, focus was on action and a plot..and I gave those two things my concentration. Worth the money.

264. "Why Anakin Turned (SWIPE)"
In response to Reply # 0

someone posted this on another board and I thought it was an intersting take....

My reasoning is that Anakin believes that Padme is going to die. He believes that because he had the same visions in Episode II, only they were about his mother and she died. He couldn't do anything to save her.

The Jedi, through Yoda, pretty much tell him that they have no way to prevent Padme's death.

Palpatine tells him that he has a way.

But why is Padme so important to Anakin? Anakin had no father. He was separated from his mother when he was ten. At the same time, she first met Padme, who was older than he was. Padme becomes a mother figure to Anakin.

And she's hot...

Now, let's examine the Jedi situation.

The Jedi Council's first examination of Anakin must have been pretty stressful for the boy. He's ten years old. Away from home. He has just left his mother, because he was promised that he would becoem a Jedi. And a bunch of old men he doesn't know tell him that he will not be trained after all.

Ultimately he's accepted in the order but the order never trusts him. He was too old to begin training, his future is clouded, "I sense much fear in you", whatever...

At the same time, Palpatine shows him trust and acceptance and builds up his ego. Little orphan Ani (sorry...) finds a cool father figure. After all, he is the President of the universe. How cool isthat? Obi-Wan, on the other hand is too busy scolding him, since that's what mentors must do and not telling him that he loves him, since that's not what the Jedi do.

Coming back to Padme, Anakin is horny, since he's twenty years old and a virgin, despite looking like a member of a boyband. Padme is also his freudian substitute mom. Problem is that the Jedi are not big on sex and commitment.

A pattern is beginning to emerge...

Finally, the sith hits the fan, when Anakin realises that the other Jedi, which he thought that they were more pious than he was, are a tad hypocritical. And Anankin was bee nshow to feel guilty for not following the Jedi code to the letter. The Council has no problem asking Anakin to spy on his uncle Palpatine and they have no problem turning Palpatine into a shish kebab, later on, when he is revealed to be a Sith lord. Despite being unarmed and looking like a California raisin with a toupee.

Of course, Anakin fails to realise that there is a big difference between doing those things in order to stop a war and save the lives of thousands of beings and democracy and doing them because you want to bang Natalie Portman and avenge the guy who chopped off your arm.

So, from his point of view, a hypocritical asshole Jedi is going to kill the only man who's ever told him what a great guy he is, instead of holding him at an arm's length. And if he kills him, his pregnant wife, which he is attached to since childhood, is going to die and there will be no way to stop this.

Anakin only has seconds to think before acting and Anakin was known for severing limbs first and asking questions later.

After becoming an accomplice to his boss' murder he can either try to arrest or kill Palpatine, meaning that the death of Mace would've been in vain, or convince himself that he did the right thing and dedicate himself to saving his wife's life.

He basically has to chose between "you can't make an omelette, without breaking some eggs" and "I'm a murdering idiot".

Good points, so I'll just say I was impressed by the movie and I'll just point out what I think are some of the flaws.

-So... how the hell could he put Chewbacca in the movie. That doesn't fit at all with the originals. Maybe I have to watch the old ones, but wouldn't he mention that he's tight with Yoda?
-That two Wookies that were swinging on vines and doing the Tarzan AOAOAOAOOAOAOAOOAO!
-Darth Sidious kills 3 jedis in 6 seconds. They could've spared 2 minutes to actually show those guys fight, instead of making them look completely helpless getting stabbed immediately.
-So how do they explain why R2D2 is such a bad ass (fire, oil, catching stuff, hopping out of planes, flying) and then just loses all of these skills?
-Anakin turned to the Dark side way too fast after killing Mace. He should have ran outside and thought about it, then Sidious couldve shown up and guilt tripped him. 2 more minutes.
-They should've had Yoda really lose the battle or add Obi Wan to the mix to show that they clearly couldn't beat the Emporer, that way they have convinced us that that was the only way.
-The line about communing with dead Jedis and Obi Wans "homework" seemed to be a little out of place.
-and finally, not enough muppets.

Great movie. I give it 36.5 out of 48.2 Mini-Clorettes. Minty!

Only thing that still has me dissapointed is how quickly Anakin turned from light to dark. I know Lucas wanted to give the feeling that he was turning the whole time and that was the climax, but he was still spouting the light side agenda and lines for a good amount of time. I just wish they had gone MORE into that gradual change, it didnt seem like enough detail was given to really showing that aspect imo. The fight on Mustafar, the fight with Greivious with the 4 lightsabers, and then the Jedi getting killed...3 parts that will always stick in my head. The final fight was so well done man...I loved how Anakin fell to his doom because of his own absorption with himself, that was great. Then when he screamed I HATE YOU to master kenobi....that shit really hit me hard, great job there.

Finna see it next week on digital projector, then who knows how many times more.

I've been contemplating this movie all week. Also during this time I went back and saw the other prequels and then episodes 4-6.

I have to say I really enjoyed this film and the main reason being is that I now have a better understanding of who Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader is. As a kid watching the three originals, he was always the scary guy in the dark outfit that turned out being Luke's father. It was hard to imagine him being a good person and on the side of the Jedi.

This film was very affective in showing how the emperor was able to play off of Anakin's weakness and turn him into the darkside. It was vital that the emperor have this cunning wit about him and Ian McDiarmid definitely pulled it off.

Hayden Christensen finally gave a decent performance.

Ewan McGregor was also great but I didn't like his comedic one-liners.

Natalie Portman, although a terrific actress, was miscast in this role. I thought she would get better by this film, but she was still awful. Plus I wish Lucas had made her more of a Princess Leia/badass type character. Anakin has a such a strong personality and it would seem the person he would fall for would be able to match him. She came off so weak and pathetic.

The action scenes seemed very LOTR/Peter Jackson influnced.

My favorite dramatic scene was the fight between Obi Wan and Anakin. I liked the way Obi Wan broke down and showed his utter disappointment and anguish in Anakin turning to the darkside. It was like he spoke for everyone watching the film because even though we all knew it was gonna happen, it was still so hard to see Anakin turn evil.

I also liked the Code 66 killings of the Jedi.

I definitely want to see this again soon.
