""She Hate Me" wasn't as bad as y'all been sayin......."

matter a' fac it was good....

I saw it as a commentary on morals and ethics in corporate amerikka and today's society in general...

Wouldn't say a top Spike joint but a good flick nonetheless....but you have to see it for more than face value..

onna notha note: "Coffee and Cigarettes" is a sleeper....but peep it just for the RZA, GZA, and Bill Murray scene....comedy..

I know there was a whole long post on "bad movies people say you don't get," but why is it that supporters of this film always assume that people who didn't like it somehow missed the point? As if it's impossible to know what Spike was trying to say and still think he said it poorly.

"How I figure" has been hashed and rehashed. Suffice it to say, I -- and dare I say, the majority of people around here -- just didn't like it.

The question is, how do you figure that anyone who didn't like it somehow failed to look "beneath the surface" of the film?

"Message standing out more than plot" is generally considered a bad thing.

Given that the message was so prominent, I'm always surprised that people think anyone missed it.

GTFOH!

You are the first one trying to talk down at posters who you think aren't of your artistic sophisticated level of film critic.....you are actually as pretentious as they come around here...stay on some 'holier-than-thou...you didn't get it....it went over your head...type shit. And half the movies you defend be straight garbation.

I've seen you get upset at people for hating a lot of that starbucks garbage that a lot of the 'Pass the Popcorn' community tend to laud.

If people like 'She Hate Me', let them love it.

I didn't think you would fall for some obvious baiting, but right on cue.

Name one movie I have defended in the manner you have describe.

Search for "REDeye" in current posts or archives, see what you come up with.

When that turns up nothing to support your bullshit, when that actually comes back with evidence to the contrary, that I rarely even comment when someone says they don't like a movie I like, and that I rarely even bother defending the movies I like around here, then you can come back and explain what any of that has to do with the question at at hand.

I'm not asking why anyone likes this movie. I wonder why the people who do like it assume that those who do don't like it didn't get it.

Or, in your case, why you assume those who don't like it have something against Spike.

REDeye is an elitist prick

he's always saying crap like "I can understand why people liked this movie but it wasn't for me and here are my reasons:". then he proceeds to provide insightful commentary to support his opinion.

WTF what kind of passive aggressive bullshit is that? why doesn't he just call the people who like the film pretentious coffeehouse idiots, since that's what he's so obviously implying?

another time I asked for advice on some Woody Allen films. he recommended some films along with reasons he felt they were a good starting point. then he went on to say Woody was one of his favorite filmmakers, which made me realize his response was only about stroking his own ego by flaunting his knowledge while scoffing at my ignorance of the subject. (not to mention he probably advocates marriage between parents and their adopted children)

it made me feel awful. he might has well have called my mom a bitch for raising such a dumbass kid.

Revolutions ain't easy. The movement begins slowly.

But Orbit is up to thine task.

And I shall dethrone all manufacturers of caffeinated drinks with more than two syllables or with french pronunciations.

And in that world, people wouldn't be afraid admit that 'Finding Neverland' was a hot piece of garbage, to free their souls of that mental block that prevents anyone on these boards from ever suggesting Johnny Depp might be a tad overrated.

In that world, Y'all admit that Jim Carrey the comedian was better than the serious actor who overplays tormented confused people.

In that world, there would be no starvation.

That is the world I am fighting.

Join me.

Or face history.

Your question was rhetorical, and you know that.

I don't care about your posts in the past, and you know that. In fact, there are few posters on here who makes posts worth of memory, except that one genius who didn't like "get on the bus' because of the imagery depiction in the opening credits(Mr Mech or something like that).

I am just here to remind you all on 'Pass the Popcorn' of how pretentious y'all are.

If someone likes 'She Hate Me' let them like it.

You made a jerkish comment to an innocent post, so I called it correctly.

It's an open-ended question. Learn the difference.

I'll repost:

"I'm not asking why anyone likes this movie. I wonder why the people who do like it assume that those who do don't like it didn't get it.

Or, in your case, why you assume those who don't like it have something against Spike."

If you don't want to answer, fine. But don't assume it wasn't a real question.

Or is it that you can't answer?

>"I'm not asking why anyone likes this movie. I wonder why
>the people who do like it assume that those who do don't
>like it didn't get it.

That is rhetorical.

In fact, that is a purely rhetorical question.

That is an amazingly purely rhetorical question.

You don't want an answer from the question, you are making a statement with a question.

That is why we ask rhetorical questions.

With that question, you a suggesting that its wrong for people to suggest that people who didn't like 'She Hate Me' "didn't get it."

And that is okay.

But to attempt to make a rhetorical question un-rhetoricl actually makes you look a bit worse.

Just admit it.

>Or, in your case, why you assume those who don't like it
>have something against Spike."

Another rhetorical question.

Not asked to be answered, but asked to communicate a point, in this case, "Orbit, not everyone who dislikes a Spike movie dislikes Spike. You can dislike a Spike movie simply because you dislike it."

You rephrased that in the form of a question.

Hence my declaration that you ask rhetorical questions.

Damn, I'm good.

>If you don't want to answer, fine. But don't assume it

No, I know they were rhetorical questions.

Rhetorical questions?

They are fun for college freshman to work on their logic skills. You know, late nights in dormitories.

But not for people who know better.

>I'd chalk it up to extremely low expectations...

And sadly, a lot of it is from black people too.

But people tend to have a gut revulsion to every single thing Spike Lee does that could possibly be interpreted as less-than-ideal.

This is how films like 'Get on the Bus' get horrifyingly bad reviews, yet was a superb film. Same with 'Summer of Sam'. Same with 'Clockers'. Same with '25th Hour'.

People don't like Spike, and so find reasons to hate the films independent of the films. So when they come out, people fly off the cuff and hate on it like its an outbreak of SARS. Months later, a different opinion surfaces.

That is what happened here.

Now that its on DVD, people can watch 'She Hate Me' without that knee-jerkness.

And when you get rid of that, its actually a good film.

Like most of his films.

That is what I said. I said that every single person who hates any Spike Lee film must be brainwashed by the anti-Spike gods. I said that you must love every single scene of every Spike Lee film ever made, or you are evil and are a Spike hater.

Poor Strawman, by the way.

Let's toast Latte's to your simplemindedness.

Or inability to read.

Or both.

Or some other mal-attribute I haven't discovered yet.

Loosen your Birkenstocks. Please.

Yes, you did construct a lame strawman.

You listed several movies you liked, and asked a stupid, rhetorical question with an implied strawman that I sniffed out and pissed on.

Its really not that serious, doggie.

You can feel free to like or dislike whatever films you like.

But there is an irrational disregard for Spike Lee's films, hence the 'Summer of Same' episode. Hell, Mel Gibson caught a little more hell for a film with Jesus in the title.

So, there was an entire 'Charlie Rose' episode dedicated to Spike Lee's depiction of Italians in 'Summer of Sam'.

Apparently critics felt that Spike Lee made that film for the sole purpose of ridiculing the Italian community. There was a big New York Post article about it, and flames ensued. Just google Spike Lee, Italians, and Summer of Sam.

Here's a glimpse.

http://slate.msn.com/id/31510/

http://www.politicalusa.com/columnists/schlussel/schlussel_016.htm

http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=2368

A New York Post journalist was on the Charlie Rose show ridiculing Spike for making the film. Mira Sorvino and John Leguizamo had to come on the show, and talked about how not only was Spike the best director they ever worked with, but that the charges were ridiculous. Sorvino is Italian herself, and didn't find the film at all disrespectful.

Lee himself was also interviewed, and instead of discussing his new film, he had to defend against claims that he was racist.

The bottom line is the film is #455 on the list of movies that depict Italians in a less than glowing light. Try Goodfellas or the Godfather for a stereotypical depiction of Italians. Not the Spike Lee joint.

And the bottom-er line is that NO DIRECTOR HAS TO PUT UP WITH SHIT LIKE THIS film after film after film after film. Spike Lee has to deal with it all the time.

So you are wrong. As usual.

The only other examples of outrage towards Lee's films are with Do The Right Thing and when he took Malcolm X from Norman Jewison. Only he has to put up with it? what about Ron Howard accused of covering up John Nash's anti-semitism? Eastwood being accused of promoting euthenasia? Mel Gibson accused of blaming Jews for the death of Jesus? and Scorsese is attacked for portraying Italians negatively all the time.
Where was the outrage about The 25th Hour? She Hate Me? Clockers? He Got Game? THERE WAS NONE. and there usually isn't.
A guy who everyone hates is not hired as a Nike spokesperson, a member of the NYU faculty, and they do not get their name on the posters of their films.

In post #9, as in so many other posts, you make sweeping generalizations about people's opinions of Spike Lee and how that affects what they say about his movies.

People reply to say that not everybody hates him, and there are plenty of people who like him. People, such as quoted below, point out what is obvious to others that Spike has enough fans...

>>Spike Lee didn't become such a big name because all critics
>>and white people hate him. "A Spike Lee Joint" wouldn't be
>>mentioned in all the ads for his films if it drove people
>>away.

that is still beneficial to use his name when advertising his movies.

You respond by giving examples of critics who hate Spike, information that, valid as it may be, does not address the point the previous poster made.

Perhaps you hope the sheer volume of irrelevant information will sway the casual reader. Perhaps your only goal is to bludgeon us over the head with such ill-logic that you appear to "win" the argument through attrition.

Perhaps you just can't read.

Regardless, you are good for a few laughs. I'm glad you took the bait and joined us here on planet earth for a few hours.

*Yawn*

I'm not here for a consensus competition.

I don't know what percentage of people in the universe hate Spike versus those that love Spike.

I *DO* know that a higher percentage of his films receive irrational backlashes than any other director. I know he is the object of slander more than any other director.

So,

Relative to other directors, all my claims are 100% true, unless you want to find me the following of people who hate Jerry Bruckheimer as much Spike Lee.

>You respond by giving examples of critics who hate Spike,
>information that, valid as it may be, does not address the
>point the previous poster made.

Valid.

Valid.

Valid.

So is it valid?

Does any other director get this magnitude of consistent hatred for the press?

Was the negative coverage of 'Summer of Sam' unwarranted? Did it deserve to sweep New York city to the point where I was hearing more about his depiction of Italians than I was the actual film?

Right.

And yes, I'm right.

>Perhaps you hope the sheer volume of irrelevant information
>will sway the casual reader. Perhaps your only goal is to
>bludgeon us over the head with such ill-logic that you

Talk about dodging. The above paragraph meant nothing.

>Perhaps you just can't read.

Cute.

>Regardless, you are good for a few laughs. I'm glad you ook
>the bait and joined us here on planet earth for a few hours.

Cute.

I'm glad you agree though.

I gave you an actual scenario whereby Spike Lee hatred has had actual ramifications on his career...and example where Spike Lee wrongfully accumulated hatred....hatred that was completely baseless.

You come with....what again?

No, you're here to argue with yourself.

>I *DO* know that a higher percentage of his films receive

>the object of slander more than any other director.

You are here to argue with yourself, because no matter what anyone says about Spike, you make it about this.

Spike's a big man. He doesn't need you to defend him. What does critics hating him have to do with people here not liking She Hate Me?

Nothing. Nothing at all.

But no matter what we say, you'll drag out some links and quotes to suggest that critics don't like him, as if that has anything to do with what we're talking about.

Which is why my above question, the one you duck repeatedly, is a real and valid question.

>Relative to other directors, all my claims are 100% true,
>unless you want to find me the following of people who hate
>Jerry Bruckheimer as much Spike Lee.

And so this is really a dead issue right here. Because I personally know scores of people who hate Bruckheimer, and their hate is way more than vocal and virulent than any hate you see around here for Spike Lee.

>Does any other director get this magnitude of consistent
>hatred for the press?

Who cares? What does this have to do with people like me and others here who like Spike but hate She Hate Me?

>Was the negative coverage of 'Summer of Sam' unwarranted?
>Did it deserve to sweep New York city to the point where I
>was hearing more about his depiction of Italians than I was

Who gives a shit about Italians in NY? What does this have to do with what we're talking about? Oh, wait, we can only talk about what you want to talk about. My questions are merely rhetorical.

Because you actually say dumber shit on these boards, believe it or not, than I read in most reviews.

For example,

I heard some irrational criticisms of 'Get on the Bus', but your declaration that the imagery in the opening credits was reason enough for you to dislike the entire movie was one of the 3 or 4 stupidest film commentaries I've ever heard. Definately. I'll never forget it.

And this guy I'm talking to now dosen't even know what a rhetorical question is.

Its fabulous.

I'm actually glad you are around, because maybe you'll cough up something worse for me to pounce on and entertain me with.

So what else do you have to say about film today?

Spike aint even hated around here

this movie is.

if anything, there seems to be a certain contingent around here that has difficulty accepting the fact that Spike's capable of making a bad movie.

if you like the movie, then great. but it's silly to assume that anyone who didn't like it has an anti-spike agenda, or isn't looking deep enough into the film.

I almost forgot the 25th hour hate.

I can read.

hatred of the man runs rampant around here, evidence that people do criticize his films (for reasons they usually support well) does not equal hating everything he does. I'm sure there are songs by your favorite artists that you don't like, every director with a substantial catalogue of work is almost certainly bound to make films that are bad or at least some people won't like. And Lee is ambitous as hell and some of his ideas just don't work.

you can find people who hate everything.

But is do you see more hate for, say, Malcolm X than any other good movie?

Are you sure, absolutely sure, that this isn't a little Spike sensitivity on your part?

I mean, when people hate on Stanley Kubrik movies, are you jumping to his defense?

you've never seen "Do The Right Thing Sucked" thread in here.

you've never seen a "Maclom X sucked" thread in here

you've never seen a "Clockers sucked" thread in here

you've never seen a "Mo Betta Blues" sucked thread in here

i've been here 3 years and I've seen one person...ONE person say Do The Right thing was a bad movie (you know who you are lol).

and when you get into He Got Game, Summer of Sam, Bamboozled, Girl 6.. etc.. yeah, shit gets kind of polarizing

will you find people who don't like some of his movies here? of course. will you find "________ sucked" threads? sure. just like you'll find dissenting opinions about just about any other directors movies. doesn't mean it's the general consensus or that Spike's being unnecessarily picked on.

but like I said in another recent "everyone hates spike" reply, for the most part Do The Right Thing, 25th hour, Mo Better, Crooklyn, Get on the Bus, Malcom X, are almost universally lauded on this board.

some of Spikes fans are just way too sensitive. a few dissenting opinions and folks get in an uproar. (SEE?! SEE?! SPIKE HATE!!!)

Spike's like any other very good director. he's made some great movies, some good movies, some-not-so great, movies, and a couple that sucked.

but he's still gonna go down in history as a master. trust.

relax people

but y'all don't hear me though

honestly?? I've heard that some thought that the chararcters were too stereotypical...or the plot was bullshit...

but what...the actin was bad? what?

..m'sayin...for me the story was original, maybe-far-fetched at times, but original...the actors were quality, as always Spike brings the new talent...it was good (however fictional as it may be) to see a cat that I could relate to as VP of a corporation.....the situation was comedy at times...and the eye-candy didn't hurt either...

..f*ck it I just like how Spike makes his isht...

but...Girl 6, on the other hand.....dirt...

a ton of reviews that pretty much said this was the worst film ever. I left the theatre thinkin "WTF? This shit was actually dope."

I don't get it. I been asking somebody to explain to me what about this film was so bad...the best i can get is crazily obtuse shit like "ham-fisted direction" and "heavy-handedness"...like cats on OKP co-directed the Deer Hunter or some shit.

AND the film is OBVIOUSLY a message movie/satire...which by definition, tend to be somewhat obvious...

I think that movie had subtext out the ass...sociological, racial, economic, political, and sexual subtext like a muthafucka. Now, if one went into this movie thinking of it like it was...Soul PLane or some other bullshit popcorn film, with no attempt to acknowldedge possible subtext, then yes...this movie could be easily seen as hot monkey shit...but for me all the subtext JUMPED at my black ass of the screen, and seriously made it one of my favorites of the year.

w/the reviews it's gotten...i've not read many but of what i've read they acted like spike tried to reinvent the wheel in the shape of a blk fist or some shit -totally uncalled for

i was just thinkin about sumthin i thought about one of the times i re-watched it, now stay w/me now: u recall when jack went to mafia's father's house {john tuturro} & how -somehow- he brings up the fact that rappers are always tryin to be mafia but never will be, it's blood so on & so forth...well okay, mafia are always tryin to be mario puzo mafia...this muthafucka sat up & gave a rendition frum "THE GODFATHER" as if it isn't the blk hand handguide or some shit...they {mafioso} act like the corleones were/are actual real live ppl, like they're part of a legacy or sumthin...true, it was a statement that had to be made about what blk artists do commerically, but u have italian americans who are basin entire existences off of what was depicted in the movie...everybody wants to be a don, everybody wants to be michael & his daddy...nobody wants to be fredo...what about THAT for wannabeism???

had another point, but i forgot it...but i don't know if spike intended to showcase that hypocricy or if it's incumbent upon the watcher to make that distinction himself

You were confused. What point was Spike making and how did it relate tothe other 30 that he listed? Also, I felt that the depiction of lesbians' wants, needs, outlook was seen through the eyes of a man (clearly), but in a way that based solely on sex.

Oh, that shit was too long!

where do you even start in dissecting the movie.

I'm not even sure if the whole impregnating lesbians and corporate scandals was a good mix in the first place.

Lol @
1) explanation of the film title
2) the lessening quality of the lesbians.
3) the implausible judge
4) the final family situation
5) that man on the street rapper guy
6) The fighting to fucking sequence
7) the unexplanation of the problems with his parents

I could go on, but I left the film with questions about the film, more so than the message he was trying to convey.

I actually liked the idea of women turning the tables on a man and whoring him out. But this thread, like many that were introduced in the film, was abandoned in favor of those lame flashbacks to cats dancing around the Watergate hotel in Tricky Dick masks and a tenuous, fishing line thin, barely-hanging-on connection between John Henry whateverhisnamewas and the guard from Watergate. Come on.

We got it, Spike. Money corrupts. And it corrupts so bad that when things get really, really tough, fictional characters can compare themselves to actual figures and we're supposed to go, Hey, man, that's heavy. The System SUCKS. Err... no.

And don't get me started on the women. The only halfway likeable woman in the entire piece is the nerdy lesbian with glasses, one of the first that he fucks. Ellen Barkin mumbled 3/4 of her lines. Kerry Washington was a mess. Paula Jai Parker? Wow. Danica Ramirez was/is pretty, though. And I think I was supposed to be HOWLING with laughter at the scenes such as the one where little John Henry (oh, the irony) gets tossed around by the BIG WHOMPIN' LESBIAN. Err... no.

And explain to me again why John just HAD to fuck these women to impregnate them? Why he couldn't just do his thing in a cup and sell it off? Was it because Q-Tip's sperm count was low and Jonh got paranoid about his own?

And that ending. Are you kidding me? "Hey, let's all be together, one big happy family, the two lesbos and the bore." Err... what? We were supposed to buy that John Henry's love for this lipstick lesbian, the same woman he had walked in on with another woman, the same woman who had for a better part of two hours manipulated this dude into whoring himself, was so strong that he was willing to accept her and her Dominican lover just to have her back? Bull and shit.

Spike had to have been making a 2 1/2 hour gag reel for shits and giggles.

..but it IS a BAD movie...so bad it's good...yeah, it jumped all overr the place, made NO sense in many places, and extremely hevy handed at points...but i STILL liked it...i took it as a comedy, hardly ANY of it i took seriously and how ANYONE can hate on dania ramirez is beyond me....damn she's fine....anyway, as a satire i thought it was well done....i just didn't like the way Spkie portrayed the lesbain relationships or mindset....it was like they all wanted dick but couldn't admit it....even the sex scenes...

if anything, i think spike should have downplayed the whistleblower BS and played up jack's family...
