he just means he wants folks to be honest with their opinions...yes we all know Ang worked long & hard on this project, but she deserves honest reviews...if there was something you didn't like or necessarily agree with/feel, you should be able to express your opinion here in this review...no one is above constructive criticism here.

hope that helped...btw, I have yet to read it so my review will come a lil later.

>able to express your opinion
>here in this review...no one
>is above constructive criticism here.

remember that unlike the okayartists I don't have the option of walking away from this joint if I get dissed really bad.

"Eff okayplayer for the day...eff okayplayer for the year!"

I'll be in the office, people rolling by... "Did you see how hard dude dissed your ish?" How hard would it be to work at your job like that? (oh, wait...y'all don't work...y'all post!)

Okay, I'mma stop bitching. Actually I'm amazed that *everyone* seems to be getting it. I thought my mom's generation wouldn't understand because I used words like "mad" to mean "a lot", etc. They're getting it.

My goal was to make people laugh out loud and forget some silly ass troubles for a bit.

If people don't get it, or don't like it, that's cool. Everything is a lesson. There's not too many things that make me cringe or get me upset, so if someone wants to come in and straight bash for the sake of bashing, they're better off bashing someone else. I'll laugh at that shit. I made fun of a year of my own life in this book. Someone else talking about me me is okay by me.

Okay, I see another question I can answer and I'm stepping away from this thread. Not like I needed to make that announcement...
Just feel bad when I see someone post and then someone asks a question and gets no response. Sometimes the person really didn't see the question.

So, uh, I'm rambling. And should I even be on this thread?

I'm confused. I see dead people.

Bye.

didn't mean to freak you out or anything, was just trying to clarify.

some of the stuff from backinnaday is in there, but not much. i guess that's because that stuff was already out in the public domain. so she had to piece together more broke recollections. it was a seamless recreation though, since it all still feels like the original.

there was one 'false memory' i had regarding the book. one particularly funny story that she drops toward the end was one that i swore came from the original diaries, but she told me that it was something she'd posted on okayplayer (so old-heads on the site may recognize an entry or two).

i think her editor did a great job, since i can clearly 'hear' her voice. i wrote a review of it for a paper that i write for, and it was just published today, so i'll post that.

It had about 10 entries up. When I printed it out, it totalled about 30 pages. The book is 212 pages.

Some of the stuff I put in this book I *couldn't* put up on my Penn site. I just kept it in a journal and kept it to myself. Like, my girl steals a book...I could never put here out there like that on the Penn site, cause the teacher she stole it from could see it and know she stole the book!

Also, sometimes on my Penn site, I'd have real names up there. My friends were cool with that. The Random House legal department, however, was not. The combed the book several times to make sure I didn't violate anyone's privacy.

There's an entry about Walmart in there. Aaron (who did the drawings for the book, but didn't want credit *on* the book. The drawings were a *present*, he says. I think it's because he's a master artist and his lawyer would get mad if he found out he did some shit for free.)...Aaron was going to draw one of those Walmart Smiley Face things, but couldn't because of Legal.

I had to change a few dates, also.

I have two comments. Honest comments.

1) The situations in the book are hilarious. REALLY funny. I was cracking up on the LIRR train back from Manhattan, and getting stared at. It's a solid B+ book. Funny. Escapism (not for me, though).

2) The writing style in the book seems to be better suited for the net. The speaking voice jumps from first person to second person to omniscient, and the tense jumps back and forth between present ("this is what's happening right now!") to and past tense("you won't believe what happened today!").

But that's it. Otherwise, it's a pretty good read.

Okay, I know I said just one more post...forgive me. I am so *blessed* for all of the feedback and support. I won't respond anymore (uh, today) than to say "thank you" for all the reviews.

Thanks! A solid "B+"..., if the curve is right, I should get an A-, right?

Just wondering why that speaking voice is better suited for the net?

What is it about reading on the net that makes "tense" matter?

I'm honestly asking and there is no sarcasm in my voice right now. Just want some insight.

The reason some entries are written in different tenses is that sometimes, like in the check cashing joint or on the bus stop, the shit would be happening as I was writing. It's a diary, and I wanted to keep as much of the original feel as I could. When I started to mess with the tense (and I did, to try to keep the book consistent) it started feeling more like fiction because I was messing with it. It was too "clean".

It's just raw (but fine-tuned and edited for your laugh-out-loud pleasure) diary, so I felt it best to make the book as the diary was.

Let me know about the tense thing! E-mail me if you can!

Hi, i'm a lurker, i don't post, i observe.

Now, Quest, it's not just the book review. In general, you tend to put people down with our sarcasm and condescending demeanor. You're an ass! About the book review, a B? wtf is that? After someone puts all their hard work into something that is obviously worth checking it out, you give it a B? Angieee, ignore him, i liked the book.

Listen here, Corky. You need to simmer the fuck down.

1) It's the review section. I can give it any review I want.
2) Is this book on par with the great literary works of all time? NO. It's a lighthearted, hilarious book you can read in your spare time.
3)Angie asked me to e-mail her to explain why I felt what I did, and I DID. IT'S A GOOD BOOK...but it's not "There Eyes Are Watching God." It's entertainment --- not heavy, life-changing shit.

I bought it. I liked it. I will give it to my friends to read. It's a B+.

That's all I meant, when it comes to OkayArtists and the Goddess herself sometimes the worshipers can lose balance.

I finished it this morning and I swear Angie's the only person who can come close to the what I consider this unique "curse" I have as far as what happens to me seems not to happen to others.

I feel the narratative style and use of good metaphors and of course the brokenesitiviy(yes that is a word, my word) of it.

I do have to admit that since I am acustom to seeing her wil' out all the time on this site I had high standards for her comedy and I didn't feel she really let me down.

My biggest problem with the over all book is that it wasn't dedicated to me. I mean, her moms and all is kewl, but this is me I'm talking about dammit:)

highlights - without giving anything away

debtor calls
the funeral - that shit still has me laughing
new years

many more but I really like the way it made you feel like she was just convoing with you.

I've gotten about 5 pple to cop it already and I've also got the bookstore hyped about it and made them put a copy on the counter.

that's all for now

i think mcgruder mighta been the cat that flipped on her about playing her friend on new years

i pictured some of that stuff and was highly entertained

i wonder did the book end where okp started?

i wondered how she could get hooked up with SO MANY weird cats

im inspired bc some of that is me. an actual line of mine was "the kkk could be having a cookout, if they aint hangin niggas im eating", turns out there was a line of similar nature here, so im not crazy

i liked it a lot, concise QUCIK read, but its a thick book, yopu dont wanna stop reading. For example i quit reading hannibal bc it was boring and the autobiography of malcolm x dragged on n on at points.

having met the author and having some small idea of her personality this book was a delight

i think the book is really funny. it seems like sometimes, that Ang is long winded, but once it comes together at the end u'll completely understand where she was going. and i love how she strays off the subject sometimes, it's like u're having a conversation w/ her. and u just know that when she says, "don't laugh at me about this...", something mad funny is going 2 happen. i guess what really makes it funny is that i can definitely relate 2 have been broke and being semi-broke at the moment. some highlights from the book...

no panties
wal-mart
new years

and there's really no way i can give anything away. u really have 2 c how she puts things. and i knew that was Arron that did the illustrations. looked like his work. i wonder if he'll incorporate a Stress character into the Boondocks (another book i'm waiting 2 come out). i'm only on page 173 of Broke Diaries so far (just got it yesterday and haven't had a chance 2 just sit and read it all the way thru yet) but i know i've laughed out loud quite a few times. i honestly haven't laughed out loud at a book in a minute. overall, a very good book. definitely work getting. if not 2 support Ang, 2 get a good read and a good laugh.

I work in Manhatten Beach, Cali and I figured I'd jet over to the collosal Barnes and Nobles right by my office during lunch and pick up the book. NO BOOK in sight and none had arrived at the store unboxed or appeared to be on the way. I complained to the info desk and they called Waldenbooks in a nearby mall. Luckily Walden had it and I scooted over to the mall and picked up the book. I figured that I could read the beginning of the book over my Teriyaki Bowl (11 bucks for the book and 4 dollars for lunch...two days ago, that would have seemed reasonable or downright frugal, but Ang's story had me feeling like I was BALLIN'. Hell I didn't even eat all the rice cause I got it like that!)

Well three and half hours I got up from the table in the food court and headed back to the office having been thoroughly entertained. Don't get me wrong the book had its points where it was hard to follow (especially when it came to following her narration and dialogue), but the book was funny. I chuckled out loud several times especially when I thought about Ang weilding that broomstick handle Bo-style like the discount store ninja she is....FOOTSWEEP!

But a few laughs isn't want really kept me glued to my seat. The more I read the book, the more I got an underlying sense of the dignity and riches that Ang possesses. Never did she let any of her misadventures define her. Her identity stayed intact through numerous episodes of embarassment like not getting into the club (in the same tight club pants) because the five dollar cover was too much. This book says more about personal finance then most of the busienss section at the book store. It demonstrates what true wealth is all about. Instead of trying to hide her lack of liquid assets from herself and others she liberated herself from it by writing about it and sharing it with the world via her website. Our desire to define ourselves through opulence is one of the most damageing values and habits that american cultures share, and black people seem to be the most severly infected. Between our cars, clothes, eating habits, credit cards, rent payments (rather then mortgage payments), we are piling up so much consumer debt that we become slaves to the the jobs we have. We exploit ourselves and try to buy the love back with a new SUV or pair of iceberg jeans. Broke Diaries was downright inspirational in the sense that its not a story of "rags to riches" but a story of how relatively rich we all are. Its a story of how we ultimately sustain ourselves with our will to survive and thrive and not with dollars and cents. I think those days in the self-help section reading Neale Donald Walsch had a profound affect on the writers attitude and perspective. Perhaps this book is less of a memoir but more of a self help book in itself.

Anyway, clit-clutching be damned...I really felt the book.

...for lunch tacks 3.5 hours onto the end of my day. I bill hours so if I goof off, I don't get paid. But the goofing off was worth it even though I got all guilty reading the book as I thought about the dollars I was not making at work by spending the afternoon reading the book.

h20

"Observe the ugly mess which most men make of their sex lives-and observe the mess of contradictions which they hold as their moral philosohpy. One proceeds from the other. Love is our response to our highest values-and can be nothing else. Let a man corrupt his values and his view of existence, let him profess that love is not self-enjoyment, but self denial, that virtue consists, not of pride, but of pity or pain or weakness or sacrifice, that the noblest love is born , not of admiration, but of charity, not in response to values, but in response to flaws-and he will have cut himself in two. His body will not obey him, it will not respond, it will make him impotent toward the woman he professes to love and draw him to the lowest type of whore he can find. His body will always follow the ultimate logic of his deepest convictions; if he believes that flaws are values, he has damned existence as evil and only the evil will attact him. He has damned himself and he will feel that dpravity is all he is worth enjoying. He has equated virtue with pain and he will will feel that his body has vicious desires of its own which his mind cannot conquer, that sex is sin, that true love is a pure emotion of spirit. And then he will wonder why lover brings him nothin but boredom, and sex-nothing but shame." -taken from 'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand

I almost had my own broke diary episode yesterday. Went to get my check yesterday and prayed that there were no mess up being that it was my first check from this place. I forgot to "borrow" some money from work for train fare. So all I had was $2. I was able to go and pick up the check, but if that shit wasn't there, I would have nooooo money to get back to work (that means I would be hotstepping from West 42nd Street to East 14th Street.
-Plan #1: see somebody go into the turnstyle and get in right when they do. You know...be all up on them.
-Plan #2: Give a sob story for a buck fifty...
-Plan #3: Hop the train...
-Plan #4: Say my metrocard was fucked

Ahhh being broke...the joy, the horror, the scheming. I know that's not anything even close to what Ang wrote, but I feel ya (Damn the pawn shops and the used CD places for not taking my shit.)

Anyway...onto the book. So far so good. I can't believe she told the New Year's Eve story! Bittersweet comedy. Remind me to never have a piece of any cakes you bake and when I see a broom in your hand, I need to duck.

More when I'm finished (besides an unlimited 7-day metrocard, the book was my first purchase after I cashed my check...at the cash-checking spot. Ahhh the memories from 89-91).

36. "I Got Free Air w/ my books!!"
In response to Reply # 0

i swear to god, the folks at amazon.com must be on the hard sh**. my books came in a box 20 times their size, nestled under those plastic air pillows! tres luxe!

there was no way i was going to waste pricey packing materials, so i took my free air (and the box...you know, save a tree) back to my lair. my co-workers already suspect i'm secretly on drugs so i tried to be really obvious about it just to give 'em something to talk about.

now to the 2 minute 2 cents c'n my way into it review:

it took only a few pages for the book to warm up, and the further i got into it, the better it got. it found it's rhythm. i could feel ange gaining more and more confidence in her writing with each turn of the page. i laughed i cried...wait, i didn't cry, but i read about broke experiences i had but never dared tell anyone about (ie: the liquid alarm clock...but thats genius!).

the only way you can't relate to The Broke Diaries, is if your last name is Rockefeller or Bush.

my only complaint: no mention of vienna sausages.

semi wondering: hardly any mention of music? perhaps thats another book though. a part 2.

i love books and i love people with soul. those who appreciate and celebrate (hey look, i'm jesse jackson!) the beauty of the periphery. it's the weird, oddly beautiful, off beat moments & people that give life it's juice, and _that_ is what makes the book (and angie) special to me.

good show!

my non okp people (who think i'm secretly on drugs..and i said "my people" haha) were peepin' over my shoulder and want to borrow it.

In response to Reply # 36

I don't care what anyone says, the book was funny! The fact that it was written in both past tense and present tense was not an issue for me. I guess I always had it in my head that it was a diary and like Angie said, sometimes you write things as they happen, sometimes you write them before (intentions) or after.

I actually choked from laughtin' too hard a couple of times because I could imagine that crazy s**t happening as I was reading it. I did cry (from laughter) while reading the check cashing entry, but I just thought that is was because I was delirious from sleep deprivation. But then it happened again with the "Misinformed Militant" and "FRED" (and few other parts that I can't remember right now).

Anyway, thank you Angie for speaking out for broke ass college kids and just broke ass people in general in that crazy ass book.
I will never again be ashamed of being broke.

PS-I agree with mcScoobySnack; It was truely refreshing to not
see any mention of the okayplayer website or any name
dropping. And I've had to do the water thing before going to
bed myself a few times. It was a relief to find out that I
wasn't the only one.

What a quick read. And entertaining all the way through. Too many punchlines in some places, but it's generally a fine piece of work. Whether you know the author or not, the reader is made to feel great empathy at nearly every turn.

It really did read like a diary. The discombobulated mix of tenses added a genuine touch. We might be getting the writer's biased version of a scenario, but we know it's not fiction.

My only question: Any chance that Angiee may open up a check cashing place of her own that treats people with dignity? Now that she's not broke, surely her experiences have fortified her sense of benevolence.

In response to Reply # 0

my search is finally over. got it today and as i'm reading it on the bus on the way from the book store i experienced my first laugh out loud from a book. i couldn't believe it i thought all y'all were b.s.ing about laughing out loud in public but i was. i really had to try to surpress my laughter so peeps wouldn't think i was crazy.

then of course i'd make sure the coverpage was showing so people could know exactly what book was making me bust a gut on this packed bus.

went home and finished the book. laughing so hard my mom had to come in the room and ask me what the eff was up. then she smiled and asked me if she could borrow it when i was finished. 5 mins later walks into my room..."are u finished".

highlights
textbook theft-->virgin lol breaking ish. i wasn't expecting this kind of raw comedy so it caught me off guard
pantyless
turdboy

kittie eye claw
cheers bartender joke at end of paragraph
Do U like me fight (new years)
Oh my O

"i forgot my husband"--->that's when my mom walked in

i think i'll actually rad this book again. my mom has already started it so i'll have to wait
