i was gonna post about this awhile ago.

kevin smith's column "developing the monkey" is the funniest thing i have going right now. it is basically the trials and tribulations of making view askew 5 aka jay and silnet bob strike again (not the real title--check the stories)...any fans of the view askew movies (clerks, mallrats, chasing amy, & dogma) should read these.

So whats the movie gonna be about? Dogma was the shit. Hopefully Salma Hayek is one of the surprises he's talking about as far as the rest of the cast. She made a really nice cameo appearance in Traffic. Shit she was the most dangerous drug they showed in the movie cuz I'm addicted 2 that rack and ass baby!

Sorry, I got a little carried away there.

9. "Chasing Dogma"
In response to Reply # 0

Anyone read the Chasing Dogma series? It's dope. Penned by Kevin Smith, it's a four comic series that chronicles the journey that Jay and Silent Bob embark on from their last (er...only) scene in Chasing Amy to their first scene in Dogma. They meet Mr. Rogers, Jay becomes a fluffer on a porn set for a porno starring Dougie Howser called Doogie Nights, they spoof The Fugitive with Suzanne (remember the chimp at the end of Mallrats?), meet the Brain and the Jock from the Breakfast Club...shit, it's worth reading. Check it out.

Almost half done

Posted by Kevin at 64.167.84.14 on February 11, 2001 at 02:22:58:

At the end of this coming week, we'll be at the mid-way mark. This movie's just flying by.

So what went on this week? Let's see...

I put my wife on film for the first time, and in all honesty (and I'm not just saying this because she makes with the sex)...

She really surprised me. In a great way.

For a person who'd never acted before, she held her own against the likes of Eliza and Ali (Larter, not Cassius). Fine delivery
of dialogue (both scripted and written on the spot - featuring a very, very funny line in the latter, provided by her husband), and
a dead-sexy look. I was proud as punch and can't wait until this week when we get to do more with her.

Shannon continues to bring not only a sweetness to her character, but also some humor that wasn't that evident in the script.
Very proud of her too.

Eliza and Ali were both wonderful, spunky, arch, sexy and born to deliver the kind of dialogue I write (I hear some of you out
there now: "BAD dialogue, you fat fuck."). They'll definitely be popping up in stuff I do after this flick.

Jay continues to dazzle.

Will continues to be the most hysterics-inducing performer I've ever worked with. Fuck, he's funny. We lose him for about
three weeks, but he'll be back at the tail end of the month to wrap-up his stuff.

But the real stars of this picture (at least in my eyes) are the various crew folks who're bringing it all to life. From Dave Morton,
our master of light, to Tim and his A.D. crew of Heather and KC; from the always top-notch production design of Ratface and
his team, to Taylor and Missy, our hair goddesses, and Patty and Sue, our makeup queens; from Mosier and Laura, the real
brains behind the operation who scheduled a perfect week of shooting, to Isis, our costume maven (who put the girls in some
outfits that'll leave mouths agape, drooling; from Lisa, Scott, and John, the props wizards, to the two Mikes who control the
vast animal kingdom on the show; from the catering cats and the genius craft service gents who keep us not only nourished, but
sated, to John, our medic on the front lines, and Tracey, our stills maestro... These are the people who're making the movie. I'm
just sitting back and taking the credit.

But in that pantheon of greats, the shining star has to be Jamie, our sage-like D.P. This movie looks amazing. A-MAZING.
You folks will not believe I - the lamest visual director this side of a blind man - had a visual hand in this picture, so good, in
fact, does it look. He's a master.

I hate building expectation normally; it's far easier to sell something short and let people be surprised by the flick. But I have to
say that this flick is really, really something special. Every day we shoot, I'm surprised by how cool it's shaping up.

Trust me, folks - we saved the best for last.

It says something to me when a person describes George Carlin as 'some guy who tells jokes, 1-800-COLLECT commercials.'

I think I've officially crossed the generational gap.

On a side note, the latest word is that David Duchovny will NOT be in the movie due to conflicting schedules, but will mos definitely be in the following kevin smith flick.

Last week looked hellish on paper, but actually turned into one of the best and most fun weeks on the show thus far.

We shot Ben as Holden on all of Tuesday, with about twenty four set-ups. As always, it was a delight having the Fifteen Million
Dollar Boy back before the ultra-fast-picture-taking machine. And as exhausted as he was (indeed, he had come from NYC
where he was shooting 'Changing Lanes' with Sam Jackson, then did pick-ups on 'Pearl Harbor', followed by three days on
'The Sum of All Fears' - all before showing up for our little dick and fart joke picture), he still managed to turn in a wonderful
and funny performance. God, I love that man.

On Wednesday, we shot Ben and Matt together. Very, very funny stuff, that. Kudos, too, go out to Master Damon, as he
found a window in his 'Oceans 11' schedule to roll up on us and turn in a pretty hysterical cameo.

Thursday saw us finishing up some odds and ends from their scene that didn't involve Ben and Matt, and Friday and Saturday
kicked off the seemingly interminable 'BluntCave' sequence - a real gem of a scene, due largely to two factors...

Mark and Hammil.

Wait'll you see this stuff. You won't believe I directed it, it looks so fucking good.

Today, it was more 'BluntCave' action, that also saw the end of Mark's stuff. Good Lord, was he fun to have around. He's a
real sweetheart of a guy who doesn't play up the fact that he's a living, American icon. He'll be missed.

Will and the girls are back as well, and Wednesday, it's all-Lee action.

I swear - this may very well be our finest hour in a weird way.

In other news, I was informed by the good folks at DC Comics that they've sold out of their entire first printing run of 101,000
copies of 'Green Arrow' - before it even hit the stands. Initial orders from comic book stores had us ranking as the sixth best
seller of the month, with 83,000 copies pre-sold, and DC overprinted, hoping the additional 18,000 would eventually sell. But
comics retailers (God bless 'em) kept re-ordering to the point that DC is already sold out of the first printing, and heading back
to press for another large run of the book. So congrats to DC, Bob Schreck, Phil Hester, Ande Parks, Sean Konot, Guy
Major, Matt Wagner... and me, I guess.

The book goes on sale Wednesday. Pick it up and let me know what you think.

Rock's Return, Banky's Bye-Bye, and Stiffler

Posted by Kevin at 64.167.84.14 on March 13, 2001 at 23:33:05:

So Monday was Chris Rock day on the set. Yes - the busiest comedian/comic actor in town found some time to improve our
flick, and was nothing short of brilliant. He turned in a very hysterical performance, and in his interview for the documentary,
aptly described Silent Bob (or rather, how I "act" the part of Silent Bob) as "the white Buckwheat". Too funny.

Also, as you've already read, Lee finished up his Banky work, and it was yet another wonderful piece of Jason Lee genius he
was kind enough to lend us. Next up (in two weeks), the return of the once and future King, Brodie.

Today, however, was the delightful surprise of Sean William Scott (he of 'American Pie' and 'Dude, Where's My Car' fame).
Good Lord, I can't relate just how funny this gent was. Like Will and Rock, he had me in tears at one point (very tough to
accomplish without physically hurting me). He took what was a simple part on the page and crafted a very memorable
character that blows Jay and I off the screen in his scene. Sean came to play, folks, and walked away owning 'Jay and Silent
Bob Strike Back' during his cameo.

Tomorrow marks Ali's last day (and Heavens, she'll be missed). And Friday we shoot perhaps the coolest cameo of all: a
fictional vigilante that's very close to my heart.

Not much longer to go before we reach New Jersey and the end of this very long sojourn through the View Askewniverse.

I'd like to take a moment to thank all involved, cast and crew alike, for making this closing chapter as pleasant and painless as
possible.

Especially the Transpo guys. Derek and Brian and their team of drivers are just about the sweetest people alive. Every time I
leave the set at night, I've got a full tank of gas - just one of the unnecessary but incredibly thoughtful gestures the Transpo folks
have stolen my heart with. They're the un-sung heroes of every movie: the cats without whom nothing happens. I salute them all
- especially the aforementioned pair of gentlemen who were also goodly enough to turn in two fine performances in the film
along with their daily driving duties.

Shit like that just made the making of this movie such a heartwarming family affair.

By the by: we're hearing that the 'Entertainment Tonight' piece should be running this week. Keep an eye out for it.

Man, I can't wait to share this flick with you guys.

"That's a Wrap"

Posted by Kevin at etntwn1-blk1-hfc-0252-d1db060b.rdc1.nj.comcastatwork.com on April 03, 2001 at 17:45:28:

At 12:07 this morning (at least by my reckoning), we wrapped the flick.

Brian and Jeff were excellent, as always. Nic and Jake made a welcome debut into the imploding Askewniverse. Vincent got in
as well, with a pretty funny line. And Brad and Chris stretched, essaying the roles of characters who were not web site creators
(at least, that was the character background I forgot to give them). It was a fun and, as mentioned earlier, poignant fashion in
which to close the book on our weird little world.

Thanks to all who helped - every last cast and crew member. This really was a collaborative effort, and without the gracious
help of all those involved in even the most subtle manner, it wouldn't be the flick it is (i.e. - if it sucks, blame everyone else too).
Hell - we even came in $850,000 under budget (and that was even with going over schedule by a day).

Now it's on to the dark of the editing room for the next two months, where I can reign in this beast to a comfy, funny running
time while hopefully sweating off the extra twenty pounds I put on through production (damn you Crafty Dave and your
far-too-delicious buffet of snacks).

I think you guys and gals are gonna dig what we've been upto for the last few months.

August 10th.

Doesn't seem that far away at all.

Indeed, yesterday was my and Jen's second anniversary. Thanks for the well-wishes.

So let's see, what else is up...

Cutting continues. We're debating about whether or not to put cut scenes online, for all to see.

We're almost done with our internet trailer. I'll let you know when it'll be up.

I'm going to be in that 'Degrassi: The Next Generation' kickoff show. I shoot my stuff in July, I believe. Should be a hoot.

Guess what looks like in may be making a television comeback? Give you a hint: it's the only cartoon we've ever made. I'll let
you know more as it develops, but it's all something that kind of came out of the blue with a network it probably should've been
on in the first place. Keep your fingers crossed.

'Green Arrow' continues to sell like mad. Thanks, all, for buying it.

Plans still call for our August 10th release, so I don't know what's going to happen with 'American Pie 2'.

The soundtrack deal's heating up, so we may have news of that soon.

'Clerks: Uncensored' (not my title, mind you), moved an impressive hundred thousand units and continues to sell well. Thanks
for digging deep into those pockets for that one. Hope we made it worth it for you.

That was some nice ink in the 'EW' Summer Preview issue, wasn't it? And 'Vulgar' got a nod too, which really excited me.

Just did something with Will for some Mtv thing about Destiny's Child which is supposed to air this weekend. Keep and eye
out for it.

How sweet is that Graphitti Designs 'Clerks' lunchbox? Speaking of which, I've seen the prototypes of the Bluntmad and
Chronic figures. Really, really cool.

Short of that, not much else is new, really.

You're hearing it here first...

Dimension chief Bob Weinstein called to say he's moving 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' off the August 10th release date.
Our new release date is August 24th, two weeks later.

The reason for the move has more to do with the 'Rush Hour 2' juggernaut than the 'American Pie 2' juggernaut. 'RH2' opens
August 3rd, and it's going to be huge. If it opened to, say, forty million that weekend, even if it dropped by 50% percent the
following weekend, that's a potential 20 mill we'd be competing for (and losing, no doubt). Add to that the fact that 'AP2'
opens the 10th, along with 'Osmosis Jones' (and to a lesser degree, the new Woody Allen flick), and Bob surmised it's just
plain stupid to jump in the pool that soon, when by waiting two weeks, we stand a better chance of doing some strong
business.

Disappointing? Hardly. I trust Bob. This is the guy who did the then-unthinkable and put 'Scream' out on Christmas day. This is
the guy who moved the 'Scarey Movie' release at least twice before it opened last year. The man knows what he's doing.

All it means for you guys is you'll have an additional two week wait for the flick. What it means for us is a slightly looser post
schedule, which we can really use at this point. The test screening was scheduled for May 17th, but now we can do it two
weeks later instead. And in a world where we jumped from thirty digital effects shots to over two hundred during the course of
production, this'll give the multiple effects houses doing the shots a bit more time to nail them all in time for the test screening, as
well as give our composer, Jim Venable (the genius behind the score of 'The Powerpuff Girls' score, as well as the 'Clerks'
Cartoon) some more time to lock in most of his original score for said test screening, so we're not forced to use a temp score.

All in all, this is a good thing. The only aspect of it that bugs me is that we were on that date before any of the other flicks got
scheduled in there. And when push came to shove, WE wound up moving.

But, hey - if it means some folks won't have to choose between 'J&SB' and four other flicks on opening day, I'm kosher with
the move.

In other news, I've checked out half of the aforementioned effects shots. All I can say is... Wow. Kudos to Joe Grossberg and
the many artisans crafting these images that look like they don't belong anywhere near a View Askew Production.

But then, come August 24th, the audience's perception of what a View Askew Production looks like is going to be blown out
of the water.

A Historic Day (or night) in View Askew History

Posted by Kevin at spider-wq054.proxy.aol.com on May 24, 2001 at 05:08:09:

Tonight, we had our test screening in San Diego.

To say it went incredibly well would be a vast understatement. I'll let
the scores speak for themselves.

I'm sure most of you are familiar with the testing process. Cards are
given out at the end of the screening, and data is compiled from a series
of boxes (Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor) in regards to a variety
of topics (Characters, Pace, Music, Overall, etc). But when all's said and
done, there are only two categories that mean anything.

One is the "Top Two Boxes" - the combined score of which is the quoted
figure that's constantly refered back to ("We have to bring the scores up.
It only scored a thirty in the top two boxes.").

The other is the "Definitely Recommend". This is in the recommend category
in which the viewer is asked would they Definitely, Probably, Probably Not,
or Definitely Not recommend the movie to others.

In the Top Two Boxes, in which the average (or normal) acceptable score is
55%, 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' scored 86%. 86% of the audience said
the film was Excellent or Very Good.

In the Definite Recommend category, in which the average (or normal)
acceptable score is 45%, 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' received a 79%.

We have never... NEVER received scores like that. To wit, the highest
'Dogma' ever scored was a 60% or 65% in the Top Two Boxes, with a 35% to
40% definite recommend. 'Amy' was somewhere in that range as well.

The Dimension folks informed me that these were some of the highest numbers
not only in their history, but also Miramax's.

And in terms of who made up the audience, only 14% of the group had seen
all four of the prior flicks. So it wasn't like we screened to a group of
total fans; we were screening to fresh faces.

But let's put aside the numbers and just talk about the screening in
general.

It went like gangbusters. The audience was with the movie every step of
the way. I've never heard an audience laugh so much in any of our prior
flicks' screenings.

It was... amazing.

Many thanks to all in attendance. 341 of you came, and none of you walked
out (also a first for us; there's always been at least a 2% walk-out rate).
But most importantly, according to the numbers, virtually all of you
enjoyed yourselves (indeed, the "Fair" and "Poor" ratings were 3% and 1%
respectively).

(added later: 'i was cut off...i'm a happy happy man -- Kevin)

from viewaskew.com

Some news for youse

Posted by Kevin at spider-wq052.proxy.aol.com on June 08, 2001 at 02:06:22:

- Current running time of the flick is 102 minutes. That's what we'll be
testing next week in Arizona. We cut eight minutes (hopefully the right
eight minutes) from the version we tested a few weeks ago.

- MCA Universal is doing the soundtrack. The Stroke 9 song 'Kick Some Ass'
is the first single, and it's an excellent tune (I was a big fan of their
'Little Black BackPack'). When it hits the radio, request it like mad,
please.

- The theatrical trailer will probably debut on 'Scary Movie 2'. There are
a few different versions that we're trying to settle on now.

- We're almost settled on what the next flick is going to be.

- And the biggest news...

Thursday at nine p.m., we're putting up our SECOND internet-only TRAILER
for 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back'. Now that we're on a better,
dedicated server, the download should be quicker this time around. This
version offers up more plot, and has much more dialogue, so if you're anal
about spoilers, avoid it at all costs...

...if you can.

(screening in Arizona that i missed -- blah)

http://www.viewaskew.com/newboard/messages278/1047.html

Arizona came through for us

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Posted by Kevin at wayport-phoenix-gw.customer.alter.net on June 14, 2001 at 03:55:01:

Just got back from our second (and last; God bless Bob Weinstein) test screening. Went incredibly well. Let me break it down for you.

This was a non-recruited recruited screening. That means when they recruited the audience for the screening, they didn't say "Would you like to see a test screening of a movie called 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back'?" (that was the approach for the San Diego screening). Now, when asked that question, folks who couldn't care less about Jay or Silent Bob and whatever they're striking back against have the opportunity to say "Fuck no. Life's too short to waste on those morons," and not attend. It stands to reason that it makes for a friendlier screening, then, because the audience that agreed to attend knows what they're in for, and are happy to see it (at least, until the movie sucks; at which point, they're no longer happy they came).

Tonight's screening was recruited as follows: "Would you like to see a test screening of a comedy coming out this summer?" So folks who said "Sure," and showed up had no idea what they were seeing in advance; which means if non Jay and Bob folks came they were plenty disappointed.

The general vibe we got from the audience going into tonight's screening was "It's 'Scary Movie 2'," or "It's 'American Pie 2'." Mosier and I were a little nervous at hearing that, because it felt like if folks were expecting those flicks and then got saddled with ours, they might turn on the flick, and the scores would plummet. Indeed, we were already told to expect a drop in scores, based on the unrecruited nature of the screening. So needless to say, hearing the audience was expecting something else made us clench our respective sphincters in preparation for the ass-reaming we imagined we were about to take.

So imagine our relief when the focus group leader stood in front of the audience prior to the start of the screening and announced that they'd be watching 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back'... and two thirds of the audience let out a cheer.

Sphincters unclenched, we settled in for another delightful test.

It played incredibly well yet again. One thing that's become abundantly clear is that folks really, really like these characters (thank God; I mean, I've only spent the last eight years making movies featuring them). Yes, the scores dipped slightly (whereas we got an 87% in the top two boxes at the last, recruited screening, we got a 78% this time), but we were still well above the average score or "norm" (55%). Bob's experiment (to see if the movie would play "cold", ie - would it play as well if no one knew what they were in for?) gave him the results he was hoping for (and betting on), and he announced that we'd be opening on 2500 screens come August 24th (if the theaters will have us).

We're all very happy on this side of the pond.

In other news...

The theatrical trailer is a cock hair away from being locked and married to all the 'Scary Movie 2' prints.

The poster is also close to being locked, I'm told. I'll be seeing the final concepts later in the week.

The 'ET' piece finally ran, and I thought it was pretty good. If you haven't seen it yet, NewsAskew's got it up.

We got a really nice mention in Rick Lyman's column in the holy New York Times last Friday.

The press junket is coming up fast; at the end of the month, actually. It's being held in L.A. I think Dimension is going to start screening the flick for the critics next week, and I'm told we have our MPAA screening (to determine the flick's rating) on Friday.

Everything's moving along quite nicely.

However, one spot of somewhat bad news with a good explanation...

The trailer that was supposed to go up tomorrow night will be delayed until Monday night. The reason for this delay is because I won't be in L.A. to oversee the process like I did last time. I cut it last Thursday, and Phil and Vordo mixed it this week, but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet because I've been in Minnesota for the last few days (except for today, when I flew into Arizona for the test screening).

More to the point, I've been in Eden Prairie. Yes - that same Eden Prairie where we shot 'Mallrats'. However, I'm not there on 'Rats'-related business this time.

This time I'm shooting a documentary at the behest of His Royal Badness himself, Prince.

Prince is hosting a week-long event called 'The Celebration', at which he's unveiling his latest album, 'The Rainbow Children', for a group of fans from his NPG Music Club website. He called me a few weeks back and asked if I'd come up and shoot the event. I keep telling the man that I'm not a documentarian, and that I'm REALLY not a shooter, but he liked 'Dogma' an awful lot, and felt that I'd be a good choice to make the doc, as 'The Rainbow Children' is a very spiritual project, not unlike 'Dogma'.

Prince is a really, really cool guy, incredibly smart and talented, and interesting as all get-out. I've been a fan for years, so this has been quite a thrill for me. If you would've told me a few years ago that I'd be sitting around, conversing casually with the man responsible for the Minneapolis sound, I'd've told you I had a better chance of slimming down to a lean 150 pounds. Well, I'm not 150 pounds, but I have gotten to jaw with a guy I've long considered one of the only true artists of my lifetime.

And it's been a lot of fun.

So... that's what I'm upto this week.

My life is very weird sometimes.

48. "6.19 -- Will Ferrel interview"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=9344

Mysterio Interviews Will Ferrell about JAY & SILENT BOB
STRIKE BACK and Being A Genius!

Folks, Harry here.... Mysterio has so much interview with Will
Ferrell that frankly, I'm just gonna get the hell out of dodge
and let Will and Mysterio take over... this is great!

Be forewarned. Some of the following interview might contain some very "slight" spoilers.
And by "slight" I mean it’s so slight that it would be like comparing diet soda to regular soda in
the fact that while it might not make you any fatter, it certainly won’t kill you either (or any real
knowledge about what happens in the movie; just a little background knowledge and insight of
what to expect).

So if you’ve been following my reports and interviews so far, trust me, these reports are still
pretty much "spoiler-free". But for the true purists out there who haven’t seen the trailer, read
anything previous on the film… stay away!

For those who have, the next thing you’ll probably say is, "Wow! This is too damn long too
read!" To that might I suggest either printing it out and reading it in intervals or better yet,
tonight (6/18) at 9pm PST, while downloading the latest ‘JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE
BACK’ internet-only trailer (which promises to include more snippets of dialogue and spoilers
than the previous) over at MoviePoopShoot.Com and NewsAskew, you read the
following while waiting for it to download.

Also, over at Smith’s own site, ViewAskew.Com I believe he’s planning on making some
little announcement on what his next project will be. And trust me, if it’s what I’m thinking it is,
it’s definitely not gonna be a "little" announcement and one you might not expect, but I’ll leave
that for Smith to spill.

It’s definitely gonna be a busy Monday for all you View Askew fans!

WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY

On the set of ‘JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK’ with WILL FERRELL

In Los Angeles, inside a soundstage on the CBS lot, is where you’ll find SNL cast member,
Will Ferrell literally hanging high above from the ceiling beams filming a blue-screen sequence
for his latest feature film outing, ‘JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK.’

"String it all together and what do you have? Marshal Will-en-holly."

As with most of the cast on the film, Ferrell is simultaneously juggling his hectic shooting
schedule with ‘J&SBSB’ on the west coast all the while taping SNL back in New York. But
Ferrell isn’t complaining as he freely admits to me how he’s been handling his coast-to-coast
commute.

"It’s not too bad because I’m a licensed helicopter pilot. Miramax has been kind enough to
rent me a helicopter, so I just kind of commute back and forth. It’s one of those huge Russian
helicopters - "The Sikorsky." It’s way too big and breaks down a lot naturally."

This is typical Will, as you’ll see in the following interview. He’s quick into letting you
believe that he’s taking you down on a straight path, but just then suddenly, without warning,
pull a hard right turn and take you somewhere else, just to shake things up a bit.

And Will’s also one who’s not afraid to be caught with his pants down either. As off in a
corner of the stage, Will strips down out of costume and secures on his harness vest, which will
allow him to perform the necessary wire work for the scene he’s about to do.

"I screamed at him for like half an hour - …you want the truth, right?"

The stunt co-coordinator then goes over to safety check Will’s vest before going over the
specifics on the wire work he’ll be asked to perform and answer any questions he may have
about the stunt.

All the while, Director of Photography, Jamie Anderson and his camera and lighting crew,
set up the shot, making sure that the correct lighting and framing are in place, as Visual Effects
Supervisor, Joe Grossberg approves the setup in the playback monitor.

Ready to go, Will moves over to an apple box in front of the camera, where his harness is
rigged up with cables, and DP Anderson checks his eye line.

"It could just be like a booby-trap… and they spill a bucket of pig’s blood on your head."

The apple box is removed, and the cable rigging tested and secured with Will in place, as
he hangs slightly suspended above ground. – (Thanks for the pose Will!)

"I really wanted to dig my teeth into getting to know his work, and when I did I was like
‘Wow! This would be so much fun to do.’"

He’s then hoisted high above the cameras, directly in front of the blue screen (that will later
be incorporated with a CGI background for the finished version) where he’ll be dropped
directly in front of the camera, screaming, simulating a fall from great heights.

"Doing sketch and improv with other people is just so much fun. Plus if you fail, at least
you’re up there with someone."

The crew do their final checks and last looks, making sure everything is good to go before
dropping Will. Meanwhile Will has a little fun by striking a mid-air, "Pan"-like pose.

"Let’s just go out there and give it a whirl."

"Do we go on 1… 2… and then 3? Or on 1…2…3?"

Once everything’s in check and director Kevin Smith gives the ok, Will is released from his
mid-air suspension and rapidly dropped in front of the camera until the cables finally slow his
decent just before hitting the floor.

"If anyone dares me to do anything, I’ll do it in two seconds… if I feel like it."

Slightly of out breath, Will awaits as DP Anderson, VFX Super Grossberg and director
Smith check the playback, and decide to have Will make another go at it.

Will is asked to perform the "freefall" several more times before all concerned parties are
happy with shot. Finally getting the needed shot, Will is then lowered back on solid ground and
the cable and harness rigging removed.

*

But for Will, physical comedy is what’s most familiar to him, as you’ll discover in the
following interview where Ferrell reveals nearly all about his early days in comedy to working
on SNL, his thoughts about ‘Austin Powers 3’ and fellow actor, Jason Lee to his working
relationship with writer/director Kevin Smith and just exactly how Smith convinced him into
coming aboard on the project.

"When did you first become interested in doing comedy?"

I think probably somewhere in second or third grade when I learned how to walk into a
door and make it look like I really did. I’d learn how to do a little stage or pratfall and
everyone laughed and I was like, "Hmmm… ok maybe there’s something here."

"Where do you find your sense of humor stems from?"

You know, that’s a damn good question because I kind of had a relatively normal
upbringing, so there are no real traumas to look back on. No bitter, tortured comedian here.
Maybe it’s just that growing up in suburbia, sitting back for no other reason than wanting to
analyze things comedically. Maybe it just comes from that general boredom you sometimes get.

It’s funny because my Mom and Dad actually have a very good sense of humor. They
weren’t like jokesters or anything, but probably a combination of all those things put together.
Also, I wasn’t your typical class clown or anything like that growing up, but if anyone dares me
to do anything, I’ll do it in two-seconds… if I feel like it.

It’s obvious you’re no stranger to comedy. What had you considered doing prior to making
the decision to pursue comedy full time?"

I was going to be a sportscaster and then I realized I liked sports, but I didn’t like it
enough. The thing I liked about it was the performance aspect of being on camera. I then just
kind of got into an acting class as a gift, and I took to it and was hooked.

PASSERBY: What up Will! What’s goin’ on bro!

WILL: (shouting back) Rock n’ Roll!

(Laughing) So I didn’t really think I was going to get into it, but somehow back-doored into
performing anyways.

"Have you ever thought of combining the two elements of comedian and sportscaster, and
doing something similar to what Dennis Miller did with Monday Night Football?"

I don’t know. I think that what he’s doing is so impressive in a way. It’s such a hard thing.
It’s a blend of knowing when to be funny and also when to show that you know something
about the game and knowing when to push between the two. He did a really good job of
blending both of them. But yeah, it might be fun and stuff. Bill Murray on occasion would go up
in the broadcast booth for the Cubs game, for like three innings and help announce the game.

"Would you dare, say had the chance, do it as Harry Caray?"

No. (laughing) I don’t think I’d venture into those waters! But I would do it in the nude.
That would be my guarantee. See that’d be something!

"How did you make the transition of doing performance comedy, like standup, to becoming
a comedic actor?"

Well, I didn’t really do that much standup. I tried a little, for like a year and a half and
maybe did it thirty times. Then I heard about The Groundlings in Los Angeles and I, all at the
same time, took classes there all the while doing standup and taking acting classes. Then the
more I got into The Groundlings program, standup kind of fell by the wayside because it’s such
a solitary pursuit. It’s really exhilarating when it’s just you and its going great, and it’s like the
worst when it’s going bad. Doing sketch and improv with other people is just so much fun. Plus
if you fail, at least you’re up there with someone. So I had more training in the sketch world to
begin with.

"How does comedy in a film compare to doing it live, in front of an audience, and which do
you prefer more?"

Well I’m really still learning about film in some ways because obviously you don’t have that
audience right in front of you. Doing comedy on a show like SNL, you get the immediate
feedback as to whether or not something’s working or not. So it’s easier in that regard. On
film, it’s more like you have to learn to trust your own instincts to hang in there. Films’ are a
real tricky thing. I’ve had times when no one’s really laughing, including the crew.

"But you’ve also made the crew laugh out loud many times too."

Yeah, and I’ve seen the opposite too.

"As a performer, who influences you and your work?"

Let’s see… I used to love watching ‘The TONIGHT SHOW’ with Johnny Carson.
Anytime there was a comedian, I’d try and watch it. Obviously ‘SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE’
- Dan Aykroyd was my favorite. I like that he was so versatile and yet he could support and
could be really funny. He could kind of do anything.

Another person I’m a huge admirer of is Tom Hanks just because he’s the Jimmy Stewart
of American cinema right now. Everyone forgets that he started out on ‘BOSOM BUDDIES’.
And he’s a good dramatic and comedic actor as well.

It’d be fun to do that kind of transition. Kind of what Jim Carrey’s trying to do. That’d be
great if you can make that jump and people allow you too. Phil Hartman too in the same
respect as Aykroyd.

"When you worked with Hartman, what was that experience like?"

It was good. A lot of times when a comedy person hosts a show, the cast doesn’t
necessarily get to do all the funny parts, but rather the straight parts that a more dramatic guest
might do. I don’t remember being in that many sketches with Phil, only a handful, so in a way I
kind of feel that I didn’t really do that much stuff with him. But just in terms of watching him
work and how funny he was, he was a technician in terms of how he went through a sketch
and his blocking. It wasn’t like, "yeah, let’s just wing it" he would really have it down.

"Would you consider yourself to be more the "wing it" kind of guy or more the latter?"

I can kind of be both. I think people can be too "loosey-goosey" with stuff, and then just
the opposite. People can be, "Oh my god is this going to work?" And your like, "Who knows?
Let’s just go out there and give it a whirl." I’m also a huge fan of Steve Martin and his comedy
albums and also Bill Murray.

"How about that Jason Lee guy?"

Jason Lee…? I love a lot of his karate films. I think they’re some off the best out there.
Yeah… I think he’s one of the best guys going in martial arts today. I mean what else can you
say?

No, but I will have to say, in all seriousness, when you were talking to Jason and you
mentioned he cited me as one of his influences, I was like so flattered by that because he’s also
extremely funny and such a great actor in stuff I’ve seen. Everything I see him in, he’s always
great. So that meant a lot when he said that… if he’s telling the truth. Who knows, he might be
lyin’.

"Which SNL character do you enjoy doing the most?"

I would have to say the Harry Caray sketches that we did.

"I know Kevin’s a big fan of that character."

Yeah, and that was one of the things he’d have me do on occasion. David Letterman had
me do that too when I went on his show which was a trip. I loved doing that.

I had a great time doing George W. Bush. That’s really been a blast. There’s one sketch
though we’ve only been able to do once. I did Neil Diamond on the show – this VH1
Storytellers, and tried to do it a couple of times but I don’t think Lorne Michaels likes it, but I
wanna do him more.

What would you consider to be your career highlight today?"

Probably have to say getting to perform on stage and alongside Janet Reno when she
appeared on the show. That and having her not, you know, try to tackle me or beat me up or
something.

"You think she could?"

Uh no. I still think I could take her. That was quite thrilling actually to have her come up
because that show was on the day of the inauguration. She was in Washington and flew out
and was totally game for being on the show. She had a great time and was such a great sport.

"She’s obviously got a good sense of humor about her."

Yeah. We got in this nice conversation about how important humor is for the political
process and how its important for us in society to feel free that we can poke sun at it and out
leaders. So that was really cool.

"Do you see yourself eventually moving from TV into more acting and writing for feature
film?"

Well, in a perfect world – yes. The next step for me would to do more features on a full
time basis.

"’AUSTIN POWERS 3’ has recently been announced in development and is rumored to
be a prequel. Do you know if your character, "Mustaffa" might be returning?"

Yes! Not only will Mustaffa be returning, I’ll give you the scoop – it’s called,
‘MUSTAFFA’S REVENGE’. Austin Powers – he’s barely in the movie. In fact, Austin
Powers comes in towards the end.

"Sounds like more of a cameo part for Austin Powers, y’know considering it’s supposed to
be an ‘Austin Powers’ movie."

Yeah, it’s more of a cameo, but it’s actually Mustaffa’s movie. It’s Mustaffa and his family
and he deals with a lot of issues. It’s very touching at times. You find out that Mustaffa had
polio as a boy and his prized pony dies from a train wreck. So there’s a lot of stuff going on.

"Earlier this year, you were honored as ‘Funniest Male Performer In A Television Special’
at the American Comedy Awards, alongside female counterpart Sarah Jessica Parker. You
were up against, and beat out some seasoned talent consisting of the likes of Billy Crystal,
Gary Shandling and Jon Stewart. Congratulations on that.

Thank You.

"How does that make you feel as a performer to be recognized among your peers?"

It feels great and at the same time it’s new to me. I mean I haven’t really ever been
nominated for anything. It’s kind of a new deal. The whole election thing last year really got
SNL a lot of attention that it hadn’t been getting before. I think there’s this general recognition
that the people in the cast right now are pretty good. This and that really brought it more to the
forefront this year. Especially since I read the other people in the categories that I was in as
well. There are just a lot of talented people to be on the same page with…

Unless it was a trick. It’s the Comedy Awards; it could just be a booby trap like they force
you to show up and then its like ‘CARRIE’ and they drop a bucket of pig’s blood on your
head and say, "Ha, ha, ha!!! American Comedy Awards – you suck actually!"

"Ok, let’s talk about ‘JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK. How did you become
involved with the project?"

Let’s see… Kevin Smith, the writer slash director slash star of the movie, he wanted me to
be in it essentially and I told him, "NO WAY IN HELL! No way. No, no, no!" I screamed at
him for like half an hour and then finally -

…You want the truth, right?

"Nothing but."

He pulled a gun on me. Next thing I know I’m doing the movie.

"What were your first impressions upon reading the script?"

I think I had the same reaction as when I got asked to do this – like, "what the hell is goin’
on?!?! This, y’know… no way!" And then, once again, with the gun, he made me read the
script while with the gun was pointed at my head.

What can I say? I had to.

"Had you been a fan of Kevin’s previous films?"

You know, I had a limited know… because I’m essentially out of it as a human being in
terms of pop culture – especially anything that’s "hip".

I had seen ‘CHASING AMY’ and really liked it and then renting the rest of his films and
literally, sitting down one night and watching all of them and obviously became more a tuned to
what he does. I mean I had a general sense of Kevin Smith – his type of work, his movies and
his style. I absolutely loved ‘DOGMA’. I also saw his progression as a filmmaker too and that
was fun to see for me.

I know ‘DOGMA’ got critical acclaim and yet I heard some people say, "oh, it’s not as
good as ‘MALLRATS’", but in a way I think its his best movie. So in answer to your original
question – yeah, for the most part familiar and then I really wanted to dig my teeth into getting
to really know his work and when I did, I was like "Wow!" this would be so much fun to do.

It’s obviously a radical departure from some of the SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE films I’ve
gotten to work on, which are pretty much character from the show. You know what you’re
gonna get with it – very much in that PG13 realm of "safe family" comedies. I mean we get to
do some crazy stuff (on SNL) too, but we’re always dealing with the censors. But to get to
work on something like this in which you can just kind of go for it – it’s such a blast. Like a
new found adolescence.

"What is the most appealing factor to you in working with Kevin?"

He really gives me the feeling that he trusts me. He knows my performance, but at the same
time knows me well enough – has seen enough of what I do – to just give perfect direction in
terms of "why don’t you try this?" I like the stuff he just thinks of on the spot too in terms of
just little lines we’ll throw in or change – that sort of thing. Plus, he makes a great
grilled-cheese sandwich.

discussing his direction. Will quickly changes tone.]

WILL: (to Kevin with a slight wave) Hey dude!

continue.]

"Describe the character you play, and origin of where your character’s name derives from
in ‘J&SBSB?"

Ok, yes. Federal Wildlife Marshal Willenholly. He’s kind of a bumbling, incompetent
version of Tommy Lee Jones’s character in ‘THE FUGITIVE’. He wants to have the same
respect and tries to conduct himself with the same bravado and as often is the case his
information is wrong and no one respects him and he gets a little frustrated. He’s the guy who
tried to get into the FBI and couldn’t make it so he became a wild life marshal. That was the
second best thing he could think of.

And the name… for all those ‘LAND OF THE LOST’ fans comes from… that’s Sid &
Marty Krofft right?

"Yep."

Well, if you remember the theme song… "Marshal
Will and Holly -- On a routine expedition…" So it’s the names of the three characters that go
down in the raft and end up in ‘THE LAND OF THE LOST’. String it all together and what
do you have? Marshal Will-en-holly.

"That’s just one of the many pop culture references to look for in this flick isn’t it?"

Yeah. Another thing I brought up to Kevin, which apparently was not by design, was that
the director of the ‘Bluntman and Cronic’ film is named "Chaka", which is yet another
reference to the character of "Chaka" from ‘LAND OF THE LOST’ which I want to say was
played by Clint Howard, Ron Howard’s baby brother. And then there’s this dinosaur imagery
in the film that I can’t talk about.

"Kevin seems to allow you the opportunity to improv, which he’s been know not to do."

Oh really? I didn’t know that.

Do you discuss certain lines and bits you’d like to try beforehand, or do you just surprise
him when the cameras roll?"

Um… yes and no. Yeah, we’ve had both kinds of situations. Usually if I have an idea I’ll
be like, "hey, what if we changed it up this way?" And he’s be like, "Oh, ok. Let’s try that."
And then sometimes I’ll just do it on my own and to be frank, he’s not very happy with it. He’ll
banish me for an hour and a half. He’ll put me in a time out. I’ll have to sit in this special solitary
confinement box on the set…

"Oh yeah! I’ve seen that box!"

Yeah, yeah... It’s a BIG box. You don’t want to be there at all. It’s very hot in there. They
pump in the heat. So I try to pick and choose my spots.

"Would it be fair to say that you and Kevin share the same sense of humor?"

Absolutely. We pretty much see eye to eye in this character. Also, he told me he wrote it
with me in mind in terms of my delivery and that sort of thing. It’s material that’s right up my
alley, so yeah, we totally share the same sense of humor.

"Working with such a diverse cast and crew, who’s been your favorite to work with so
far?"

I would have to say in terms of work, the craft services guys cause they’ve really helped me
in perfecting the art of making a turkey sandwich. Before I had some problems, like the bread
wasn’t right. They really showed me how to put them together in the right way.

"And finally, how would you describe your experience working alongside such an eclectic
ensemble cast such as this?"

It’s been really fun because every day is a new thing. It’s like you’ll work with Mark Hamill
one day and Jon Stewart another day. Judd Nelson, Jason Lee, Shannon Elizabeth… it’s been
fun and you don’t really settle into a particular groove. It’s just been a fantastic experience all
around!

"Here, here!"

Trailer Update/Soundtrack(s) Update/General Update

Posted by Kevin at 64.167.84.14 on June 21, 2001 at 00:37:45:

So the trailer's now locked. It's about a minute and nine seconds. Fun stuff.

Phil and Vordo are mixing it tomorrow morning, Phil will compress it in the afternoon, and Ming will show up at night to hurl it into
the cyber void so ya'll can download it at 9pm pacific/12am eastern. Remember to download the latest version of Quicktime
beforehand.

On Soundtrack(s): Universal's doing the soundtrack, which is kind of poetic, as they also put out the 'Rats' CD (let's hope both the
soundtrack and the flick itself fare better in the marketplace than poor l'il 'Rats'). It comes out two weeks before the flick, and it's
packed with some great songs by Stroke 9, Afroman, Morris Day and the Time, Marcy Playground, PJ Harvey, Bloodhound Gang,
Bon Jovi, and a host of others. We're even getting a chance to sort of right a past wrong, by putting Dave Pirner's 'Tube of
Wonderful' (the title theme of 'Amy', also heard in 'Jay and Silent Bob') on the disc. And yesterday I pulled a slew of dialogue
clips for interludes between the tracks.

It's also going to be an enhanced CD - which means there's some video on it as well (for those of you with CDRom capability).
Look for the first 'net trailer on the disc, as well as a for-the-soundtrack-only video of 'Jay's Chant 2001', comprised of a bunch of
footage from the flick.

As if that's all not enough, I've heard there's going to be a movie cash coupon included in the CD for a few bucks off the price of
admission to the flick (five bucks off, I believe - but don't quote me).

Before I sound any more like a Universal Records pitch-man, I'm going to stop talking about the 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back'
soundtrack...

...and START talking about the 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' SCORE Soundtrack. That's right: this flick's so big, there's not
just one soundtrack, but TWO! The Score Soundtrack is all of Jim Venable's music for the flick (which you've heard in the first
'net trailer, and will hear more of in the second 'net trailer tomorrow night). Ink's not dry on the deal, but it's being put out by a
very reputable score soundtrack label (other than Universal). Congrats to Jim, and us too.

In other news...

E! ran a story about the flick yesterday. Brad and Chris might have it up at Newsaskew later in the week.

The two videos we're shooting in Jersey next week are for the Stroke 9 song 'Kick Some Ass' and the Afroman song 'Because I
Got High'. I'm not directing either (Greg Dark and Cousin Mike are the respective directors), but Jay and I are in both. Hopefully,
they'll start airing in late July.

We've started initial talks about an interesting distribution outlet for the ill-fated 'Dogma' DVD documentary. It's farther down the
road, but it'll be pretty sweet if it works out.

Hope you all dig the trailer. Spread the word that it's going up tomorrow night here and at Newsaskew.

One final note: in the thread below, some folks gave me props for being good to the fans by putting out 'net trailers. Trust me - it's
my pleasure. They're really fun to cut, and gratifying to share with you.

Not to mention that it helps sell tickets down the road, hopefully...

You folks give me a lot of credit for doing stuff like that, but honestly, I wouldn't do it if it wasn't fun for me too. When you make
a movie, you want to show it to people as soon as possible. Being that we've got to wait until August 24th to do that, this is the
next best thing.

So thanks for the kudos...

But thank YOU - for giving a shit in the first place.

The best thing about that trailer is clearly that one line.
Just like in the first one, one line made the whole thing dope:
"JAY AND SILENT BOB ARE IN THE HIZZOUSE!"

In response to Reply # 0

Youse guys wanna buy some fireworks?!

Posted by Kevin at spider-wq033.proxy.aol.com on July 04, 2001 at 14:11:04:

So the theatrical trailer is attached to 'Scary Movie 2'. If you have very
little to do this weekend, give it a look-see. It contains more footage
than I was comfortable with putting into the 'net-only trailers, but the
'net-only trailers weren't really the marketing devices this trailer's
meant to be. I mean, we're kind of preaching to the choir with those
spots, as you folks are going to see the flick anyway. Secure in that
knowledge, I could highlight inside jokes and forego any sense of
narrative, and it would still play. Essentially, I was making those for
"us".

The theatrical trailer's a different beast altogether. They test the hell
out of these things (yes - even trailers get tested), trying to maximize
the impact of what's essentially a commercial for the flick.

The bad news is - like I said - there's footage in there that I'd've rather
not got out just yet.

The good news, however, is that the trailer tested through the roof.

Believe me - no one was more surprised than your truly when the Dimension
folks related (wide-eyed) that when they tested the spot three separate
times, each time it scored well, well above average in all quadrants but
one (women over thirty five; AKA - my mom; in that category it played
merely one point below average). Apparently, for a mainstream audience,
this trailer works and works stunningly well.

But you know me: I'm incredulous as all hell.

So here's where you come in.

I know many of you are going to check out 'SM2' tonight, either for the
flick itself or just for the trailer. Either way, I'd appreciate it if you
let me know how the audience reacted to the promo. Nothing too detailed,
mind you; just something along the lines of "It played like mad," or "It
played like shit."

I'll be hitting a few theaters myself tonight and all weekend, to see how
the trailer plays, and I'll let you know what I heard/learned on Monday.

In other news...

Spent most of last week doing the junket for the flick, with Jay, Ali,
Eliza, Mark, Shannon, Lee, and Jen. Here's the eye-opener...

When I was writing this flick, I felt I might be sacrificing the critical
reaction for the fan reaction. I thought it was a fair trade-off to make,
as I was more concerned with putting together a flick you guys would get
off on than making a film the critics jizzed over (although with a three
out of four record - 'Clerks', 'Amy' and 'Dogma' - I won't lie; it was a
tough decision; when it comes to critical jizz, I'm into the facials; toss
me them pearl necklaces, I say). I guess I'd assumed a while ago that
critics and the press weren't going to dig on this movie like they dug on
three of our four others flicks, because this flick was closer in tone to
the one they DIDN'T like (poor l'il 'Rats').

The shocker is that with the exception of maybe three single hold-outs, all
200 plus of the print/radio/and TV media folks at the junket dug the flick.
And I mean DUG it. Same was true out of the NY press screenings - the
press really loved the movie.

I'm flabbergasted.

I'm sitting on a pile of wonderful reactions (for the curious: the
Miramax/Dimension publicity folks always secure the opinion of any
press-type that attends the press screenings within a day or two, write it
all down, and pass it to us; these are called "reactions"). And while
that's great for pulling quotes for print and TV ads and whatnot, what I
REALLY dig about those reactions is that everyone is feeling the love.

Before you write me off as a total 'mo, let me explain.

We had such a great time making the flick; it was like a daily party.
Hell, it was like a non-stop, non-sexual orgy (well, except for me and Jen;
we fucked each other a lot). I can't impart the amount of good will that
this production encountered and generated, so positive was the whole
affair. And to see that translate for the audience (press and non-press
alike) is incredibly satisfying. I've never had a better movie-making
experience, and the audience seems to agree - so ear-to-ear smiles are
they.

I tell ya', I'm really grateful for the whole affair. It's a sweet note to
go out on.

So thanks to all the press who've seen the flick thus far, and have said
such wonderful things about it. But extra thanks to the non-press who've
done the same - because I made this flick for you...

And me, really.

Well, CHIEFLY me, actually.

well, I dont really trust Harry, but his review for A.I. was on point (even though i've been fortunate enough to have had a good familial life .. thus far). Here, he reviews jay.and.silent.bob.strike.back - the premise sounds interesting, something i'm sure most of us won't be too unfamiliar with .. ahem ..

oh, and he lets some details out n shit. nothing major, but i know some ppl want to know little-to-nothing before seeing it. I sorta regret reading it, but oh well.

God Bless Kevin Smith!

Kevin Smith has shot the greatest slap in the face of TALK BACK ASSHOLES ever on the face of planet Earth.

It is literally a movie dedicated to the eradication to those spineless bastages that find the need to piss on everything simply because their mommies aren’t watching over their diapered asses!

I have no idea how this film will play to anyone offline… but if you’ve ever been a victim of TALK BACK…. Or some variant there of… well then, you will cheer like a monkey in a Banana Republic.

What is the film about?

Shutting Talkbackers up.

That’s it. That is what the film is about.

You see, when Talk Backers get to ranting on someone like Kevin Smith or Paul Thomas Anderson or Gary Coleman… they think, "Fuck them man, hahahaa, I just typed Fuck them man!!! Hahahaha!"
And they never really think that the person they are taking a dump on is out there reading what they are saying. And if they do, it’s like pissing on a fire hydrant that kids are dancing in the shower from… just… an uncool act of a demented ass.
And Kevin Smith has obviously read way too many talk backs and way too many posts on the View Askew boards and while he doesn’t have the therapeutic ability to just click and ban assholes for ruining his day, he did manage to get the ability to depict these little dipshits as being the insensitive little twerps that they are, so that the entire movie going public can laugh at these shits.

Now the biggest flaw in the film is that it doesn’t take the time to depict the many super genii that hang out in Talk Back and contribute to the betterment of mankind through intelligent and insightful prose.

But then, they aren’t funny. The dipshits are.

I couldn’t stop laughing at this film. This movie is a hugely childish thumb to nose and wave at them while sticking out his tongue.

The film is fall down funny. Now technically it might have tons of flaws, but I didn’t notice because I was so giggly over the concept that Kevin Smith has made a movie to MOON Internet Talk Backers that have talked shit about him. That’s just beautiful. It is pure.

Chaplin made THE GREAT DICTATOR to make the world see Hitler for what he was…. And Kevin Smith made JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK to make people realize that those little internet flame whores out there are very much the logs of excrement that we all know them to be.

Now… How funny is the movie itself?

VERY.

I like CLERKS… I love CHASING AMY… but I still have never seen MALLRATS or DOGMA. I’ve been waiting to buy that special edition DOGMA dvd forever. And I don’t know why I’ve never seen MALLRATS… I guess it was because I never saw it in theaters and I never rent videos or dvds…

And while CHASING AMY is still the film of Kevin’s that I’ve seen that I feel is the best all around movie…

I love JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK best. It is like a Mad Magazine humor adventure at full blown R-rating hell.
This feels like Kevin getting all of his most favorite juvenile urges out and on screen in one big whoopee cushion and shock ring thing.

If nothing else watching Ben Affleck and Matt Damon filming the sequel to GOOD WILL HUNTING… well it is enough to make me sit through the film again.

And Mewes…. Who the fuck knew? Dear God, the boy is a damn God in the film. He rules. Having Jay take centerstage for the entire film at first sounds like it could possibly be way bad, but folks… JAY rules in this flick. And I could tell… Kevin was so all about going down on Jay. You’ll see.

The cameos… well I didn’t ‘get’ all of them, but the ones I did get… I loved. And George Carlin’s cameo is genius. I’ll never look at a hitchhiker the same again.

The book of the road.

Oh man. Must be seen.

And then there is the BRILLIANT CAMEO by Paul Dini! OHMYGOD! First off, as anyone who bought the BATMAN BEYOND: RETURN OF THE JOKER published screenplay can attest… Paul Dini is the sexiest man alive. And when he hit the screen, women and Moriarty fainted after a BEATLE-esque scream that is.

Dini commands the screen and we hinge on every word he says. I just can’t believe that they let him… well do that onscreen. I didn’t know that was legal.

The ‘Paul Dini’ scene may get the film banned in Oklahoma, but everywhere else… people will cheer. I just hope it somehow doesn’t get cut. But… whew…

Also, this may very well be the first time that the internet film community has been fairly accurately depicted… at least the lower evil sector of it.

Kevin Smith… You Rule! Way to go!

Oh yeah, and Eliza Dushku… You are SEX! I mean just hot as hell yum yum eatumup yum SEX in this movie! And Shannon Elizabeth? I agree with Jay’s 42 ounce Big Gulp cup hanger! http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=9578

kevin smith is interviewed by AICN's mysterio; from which this excerpt is copied

“Why wasn’t Bryan Johnson (aka, ‘Steve-Dave’) in CLERKS?” – Sandy

KS: That’s a very good question! Did Bryan Johnson submit that question?
Mysterio: Not unless he’s going the dude magnet handle of “Sandy”.

KS: Bryan Johnson wasn’t in CLERKS because Bryan and I had a large falling out earlier that year over a girl that I had dated, rather I had one with, I didn’t really date, that he had later went on to date. So we had a falling out over a girl. He got into… it’s a very weird, long story.

I was supposed to work on a Sunday morning (at the Quick Stop), but I had to go to a family function so I asked Bryan to cover for me and Bryan said, “I’m supposed to go on a picnic with this girl Laura and I need to get out of here at 1:00.” And I said, “I will absolutely be back at 1:00.” As it turns out, I didn’t get back ‘til 2:00. When I got to the store, there’s a sign on the door that says, “Store closed due to bubonic plague.”

So I got inside, opened the store and took the sign down. I was in the store five minutes, and a Middletown cop showed up and looked around the store and was looking at me very oddly and he was just like, “What’s going on here?” And I said, “What do you mean?” And he said somebody called in to report that we hung a sign saying that the store is diseased or something. And I said, “Oh, that was my friend. He was just playing a joke.” And he said, “Well that’s not really fucking funny.” And he left.

I called Johnson and was like, “What the fuck did you do that for? Now I got the cops coming down here and shit and you know they’re gonna tell our boss Topper.” I said, “You know they’re gonna tell him and we’re going to get in a ton of trouble!”

And he was like, “Ah, I was just foolin’ around man. But you should’ve been there at 1:00.”

And I said, “I was going to try man, why didn’t you just wait? I was here like half an hour after 1:00 or something.” I didn’t get there until 1:30.

And we were getting up in each other grill over the phone about it. And then we hung up, a little pissed off, and then he was let go. Quick Stop let him go. Mr. Topper said, “That’s it. He’s fired.” The one thing they do is protect their business at Quick Stop.

So I was kind of pissed at the whole thing because I thought it was kind of stupid and didn’t want him to get fired, because I like working with him, over something dumb like hanging a note in the window. It just kind of blew up and we just, like I’d say “I’m not gonna call him until he calls me.” And he’d say the same thing I guess, and almost a year went by and I didn’t speak to him. And in the course of that year, we made CLERKS. It was right after we finished CLERKS that I finally started talking to him again when we were editing the movie and whatnot. So up until to that point I hadn’t really spoken to him that whole year that we were making the movie.

now, is that like a lost scene from clerks, or what?

Posted by Kevin at fw1-dmz.mediasvc.net on July 18, 2001 at 15:26:20:

As pointed out by someone earlier in the week (yes, I may not be posting much lately, but I'm watching; Mother-Sister ALWAYS watches), mid-July marks the fifth year this site's been in existence. With all that's been going on with 'Jay and Silent Bob', we never got to officially recognize this or make a big deal out of it, which is kind of a shame, as it's probably the most important aspect of View Askew, outside of the movies themselves. Perhaps if we make it another five years with the site, I'll do what I've threatened to do in the past: throw a party at my house for anyone still interested. But for this first milestone anniversary, all I can do is say "Happy Birthday, www.viewaskew.com."

We're in the studio at this moment, recording the score for the flick. Jim's done a phenomenal job, working first with an 83 piece orchestra on Monday, and now a smaller 53 piece orchestra yesterday and today. Later tonight, we record the choir.

Yes - it's a BIG score. Big and funky.

Some folks have been speculating about the move from the 24th to the 22nd. This, I'm told, is a vote of confidence. Bob figures the movie to be a word-of-mouth flick, so the Wednesday bow is meant to jump-start the weekend as folks (like yourselves) who go on Wed/Thurs spread the word to those looking for something to see on Friday and Saturday. We'll see if it pans out, but I tend to trust Bob. He knows what he's doing.

Tomorrow, we record the last pieces of ADR on the movie, with Mewes, Eliza, and Diedrich, then it's off to San Diego. The panel's on Friday, from 2:00 to 5:00p.m. I believe. I'll be showing a rather large clip from the flick, amongst other goodies. And for a lucky two hundred and fifty attendees, there's going to be something extra special...

Remember: get to the panel early, and come prepared to ask really good questions. Excellent queries may be rewarded.

...and I had to mention that NY Times piece. A big shout-out goes to Rick Lyman for such great (and substantial) killer ink for
a movie that's very dear to my heart.

You can read it online, as linked by boyd (I'd call him Boyd) below, or over at NewsAskew. But if you're so inclined, I'd urge
you to pick up a copy of the actual paper - as it features a HUGE photo of yours truly, taking up half the front page of the Arts
section. I was blown away.

A few unrelated notes...

For the curious, 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' received an 'R' rating.

If you're in the San Diego area, I'll be on the CBS station's nightly news at four or five this evening (I also did two morning
shows, but you've already missed those).

And I respectfully disagree with Jon Favreau, in regards to our casting of the same actors repeatedly in all the films we've done.
Not only has it been essential (as some folks HAVE to play the characters they've played in the previous flicks, since we've
often brought back the same characters), but if a actor or actress is good, then why not work with them again? And again? And
again?

Plus, it's just more fun.

Plus, it's one of the attributes to the films we've made that makes them stand out.

Plus, the audience (Mister Favreau excepted) loves it.

Plus, I love it.

I can go on, but you get the point.

But if that's his take on it, it's cool. I'm not offended, so please don't rush at the man's cyber-throat in an effort to avenge some
imagined wrong.

That being said, I suspect I'll be waiting until video to check out 'Made' now.

Because, you know, fuck him and the horse he rode in on.

Just kidding.

About the fuck him part; not about skipping 'Made'.

Looking ahead

Posted by Kevin at 64.167.84.14 on July 24, 2001 at 22:02:27:

I've read some speculation about where the big 'Jay and Bob' push is, so let me put some of those fears to rest.

Comedy Central is running a special called 'Reel Comedy' featuring Jay and Silent Bob in about two weeks or so. Jay and I are
doing a sit-down for that (as the characters) Thursday.

After that, we're doing that 'The Test' show for an all Jay and Silent Bob night on FX, featuring airings of 'Clerks' and 'Mallrats'
(the cut editions, no doubt), and a pair of 'Son of the Beach' episodes with Mark in them, all wrapped up by pre-and-post
commercial break intros with yours truly (that we're also taping on Thursday). This will all air closer to release.

On Wednesday, August 22nd (the day the flick opens), I'll be on the Stern show, in-studio. Very cool, and always very helpful.

Later that afternoon, both Jay and I will be on Total Request Live. Love this show or hate it, I'm sure I don't have to tell you
how many people it reaches.

Throughout August, lots of the cast will be popping up on talk shows. I'll let you know who and when once the schedule is
completed.

But I suspect the reason folks are feeling a lack of 'Jay and Silent Bob' are because you haven't seen any commercials yet.
That's because the network ad buys (ie - commercials) start airing the last week in July. Two or three weeks out (from release)
is usually how a movie is marketed (we had even less than that on 'Dogma'). It makes no sense to throw up spots prior to the
opening of 'Planet of the Apes', as it's kind of a waste of money; this weekend, nobody wants to know from anything EXCEPT
'Planet of the Apes'.

The trailer was, indeed, on 'Scary Movie 2', but has also been on many 'Jurasic Park 3' prints. It'll be "chasing" at least half the
run of the 'Apes' prints, and be attached to 'Rush Hour 2' for August 3rd. I imagine it'll get it's fair share of play on 'American
Pie 2' as well.

Look for the poster to be up in some places this weekend, everywhere next weekend.

The press is responding incredibly well to the flick, so there will be a lot of print and TV media running when the flick opens, as
well as the aforementioned commercial spots.

On the subject of those spots: like the theatrical trailer, it may not be your cup of tea. However, they're not made to preach to
the choir. We're hoping you guys are all going, so there's no need to "sell" you on the flick. Who we've got to go after are folks
that don't know/care what or who a 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' is. And those folks have to be spoon-fed the stuff you've
been hip to for the past seven years.

That being said, I've seen the TV spots. They're pretty funny (as funny as you can be on network television), quite effective in
relating the story in thirty seconds, and best of all, testing huge. Major props go out to Josh Greenstein for the trailer and the
TV spots, not to mention the poster. He's been working tirelessly on a campaign that's going to be aired so often and much,
you'll wish you'd never heard of Jay and Silent Bob.

And Bob's backing us 100%. The P&A budget on this flick is pretty huge - far more than has ever been spent on any of our
other flicks - and that's a vote of confidence from our fearless leader at Dimension.

Rest assured, kids - all is well. A big push for the flick IS coming. Dimension is sparing no quarter.

Which means that the burden's on our shoulders. If the movie doesn't work at the box office, it won't be because Dimension
didn't sell the shit out of it; it'll be because Jay and Silent Bob struck back... and nobody really cared.

Let's all keep our fingers crossed for a healthy opening, and even more importantly, a nice, long run at the box office. I can
think of no better way to send Jay and Silent Bob off into the sunset than with a fat bag of cash.

Some bad, bad news concerning me and GLAAD

Posted by Kevin at 64.167.84.14 on July 31, 2001 at 17:52:15:

I figured I'd address this here before it's made public next week.

'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' is being taken to task (wrongly, I believe) by GLAAD - the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against
Defamation (for those unfamiliar with the acronym). Below is the letter, verbatim, that I received from Scott Seomin, GLAAD's
Entertainment Media Director.

_________
Dear Kevin:

Two colleagues of mine from GLAAD joined me last evening at a screening of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. We were
overwhelmed by the potential negative impact for the film with what we would assume is a large share of its target audience:
teen and young adult males. We will be public and aggressive in our condemnation and will provide substantiation for our
opinions.

Here are the points to which we will object and our reasons for doing so:

- As one of the principal characters states, the film is a "big gay joke", but the joke is at the expense of the stereotyped
category of people;
- All references to gay men reinforce them as objects of acceptable ridicule and dehumanization;
- Specific epithets for gay men include not only traditional slurs but also have the potential to introduce an expanded vocabulary
of defamatory words and phrases;
- When sympathetic characters substitute the word "gay" for something that is wrong or stupid, it validates a common slur used
by school-age youth to mean anything unacceptable.

We, or course, are familiar with your work as a writer and director and understand that satire is a large part and object of you
expression. The intentional excesses of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and over-the-top characterizations and situations are
fundamental to its nature. However, we believe that satirical sophistication is not a fundamental expectation of an audience
bombarded by fag jokes and gags revolving around genitals and simulated sex acts.

Also, the inclusion of various other potentially offensive material (e.g. the bits about the acronym CLIT, racism, child abuse) for
laughs does not excuse or dilute the omnipresent backdrop of the "big gay joke". While I will not fall as far back as the Hays
Code, at no time is there any retribution or remorse for gay-bashing "humor". Again, to write off the behavior of the lead
characters, especially Jay, with a what-do-you-expect-from-someone-so-dumb shrug truly trivializes the impact.

I wanted to state our position strongly here before I request a meeting with you to discuss this. I will be in New York from
August 2nd to 6th and either can come to New Jersey or arrange a time at your convenience if you are in the city. Because I
realize there are no changes you could make to this film to satisfy our concerns, I still believe we could discuss how you will be
interviewed (for) this film and how GLAAD moves forward with its concerns.

Please let me know as soon as possible of your interest and availability.

Sincerely,

Scott Seomin
Entertainment Media Director
___________

Needless to say, I was crestfallen.

You all know me. You all know how big a fan I am of the gay community. You all know the respect and fascination I have for
gay culture and practices. I've said in many an interview, from 'Chasing Amy' onward, that the only reason I never dabbled in
homosexuality when I was younger was because I wouldn't know what to say to a guy after he blew a load in my mouth - a
sentiment that says more about my social awkwardness than any socially awkward stereotypes that've been unfairly hung on the
gay community.

Gay or straight has never been a big issue with me. Sex is sex, as far as I'm concerned. Some cats dig on the opposite gender,
and some cats dig on their own. Sexual identity will always be as mystifying as why 'The Dukes of Hazzard' was once the
number one television show in our country: there's no point in getting bent out of shape about it; it just IS. Some cats will always
gravitate toward Daisy Duke, and some will always pine over Boss Hogg.

I've been knee-deep in gayness for the better part of my twenties and up (I just know THAT'S going to be printed out of
context somewhere: SMITH SAYS HE'S "KNEE-DEEP IN GAYNESS"). For those who'll recall, we made a movie called
'Chasing Amy'. Bob Hawk (he who was most responsible for exposing the world to 'Clerks') is about as gay as they come (no
pun intended), and he lived with me for three years. My brother's gay. There are prominent members of this board community
who are gay. The list goes on and on.

Now lest you all think I'm pandering, I'm not trying to save face with the View Askew Gay All-Stars list above; I'm just trying
to give some context as to why I was so crushed to receive Scott Seomin's GLAAD missive. So as soon as I read it, I called
Scott Seomin (who joked about how hard it was to grow up gay with a last name like Seomin) to address his concerns. He
was a sweet guy who, after talking to him for an hour, admitted that in his heart, he knew I was not a homophobe. But he
couldn't cotton to the disparity between who I am and some of the humor in the flick.

I pointed out that the jokes in the movie, while funny at face value, do far more than evoke chuckles at the expense of the gay
community. I believe that they teach tolerance to the same audience that Scott feels won't get the humor. When you have two
main characters who've both - at one point or another - hinted at or flat-out copped to homo-erotic escapades, how on earth
can that be considered "gay-bashing". It's more than you get in most "buddy" flicks. Did Murtaugh and Riggs ever cop to
getting dreamy over the male anatomy? I think not.

But this is nothing new for us. Recall, if you will, the scene in 'Dogma', when Jay asks Rufus to tell him something about himself
(Jay) that nobody knows. Rufus points out that when Jay masturbates, he thinks about guys. When that movie came out, the
board got flooded with angry posts, demanding "How can you make Jay gay like that?!" I would answer "Why on earth would
that bother you?", pointing out that Jay's sexual proclivity should never effect how the viewer accepts the character, and that if it
did, then perhaps some soul-searching was due on the objecting viewer's part. If you liked Jay before that scene, why the hell
wouldn't you like him afterwards? The long and short of it: that scene sparked healthy discussion about tolerance and
acceptance - as well as made a lot of people laugh.

If you believe Scott's stated position that the target audience for our flicks is "teen and young adult males", then you have to
allow that some of these impressionable youngsters will have to come to grips with the fact that the character they hold very
dearly as one of "their's" has, in fact, expressed homosexual tendencies. And either those folks stop being fans at that moment,
or accept that a character they identify with engages in behavior they may not approve of (if you work under the assumption, of
course, that ALL "teen and young adult males" are terrified of the gay community). If they can accept that in a fictional
character, some - not all, mind you, but some - will carry this newfound tolerance into their daily lives. Suddenly, I can do more
than just entertain with even a flick that purports to have nothing on its mind apart from making you laugh; I can also educate in
some weird way. That's the heart of "satire".

However, as Scott points out in his letter, sometimes, satire may fall on deaf ears.

During the '70's, Norman Lear created 'All in the Family', a show with a protagonist who was, essentially, a bigot. Some
people understood this and enjoyed the show because of its well-observed satirical content. Some people misconstrued it and
enjoyed the show because Archie Bunker didn't like black people... just like them. Did that make Norman Lear a
hate-monger? Nope. Norman Lear wasn't responsible for how white America dealt with race issues. Norman Lear just
showed us how stupid white America can be when it came to race issues. He held up a mirror to our culture. In essence, he
was just the messenger.

But then, we all know what happens to the messenger...

The gay jokes in 'Jay and Silent Bob' satirize a young male culture terrified of any cock that isn't their own. I accept the fact that
some folks seeing the flick may not get the joke behind the joke, and just walk away thinking "Jay and Silent Bob don't wanna
be gay, man! Just like me!" However, I also KNOW - based on posts I've read on this board, following the release of 'Chasing
Amy' and 'Dogma' - that some folks in that same demographic will walk away from this movie a little more tolerant toward the
gay community. But just because there's a threat that the message of tolerance-through-humor falls on some deaf ears, should I
not endeavor to reach ANYONE? No can do. Because if even one person is made more tolerant of
that-which-isn't-him-or-her by watching a film I've made, then that means more to me than whatever the box office may wind
up being - or whatever any protest group hypothesizes about my motivations.

That being said, I can't claim complete altruism in making the jokes we make in the flick. Gay sex is funny... just like
STRAIGHT sex is funny. Just like making fun of racism is funny (I assume Scott's
referring to Chris Rock's white-hating director character when he mentions racism in his GLAAD letter). Just like making fun of
bad parenting is funny (a young Jay and Bob are left outside the stores by clearly bad mothers early on in the flick; I'm assuming
that's the "child abuse" Scott was talking about in his letter). Just like the homophobic mind-set, while frightening, is also fodder
for ridicule (indeed, we make fun of the exact thing we're being accused of in the Biggs and Van Der Beek scene in 'Jay and
Silent Bob Strike Back'). Just like Miramax making 'She's All That' is funny. Just like all the things we make fun of in the movie
are funny. I mean, this is a movie that mocks ITSELF as it goes along, for crying out loud. No one escapes unscathed.

Anyway, I told Scott all of this during the course of our conversation, and asked what we could do to allay his (and GLAAD's)
fears. He said he'd be asking Miramax to make a substantial donation to the Matthew Shepherd Foundation (Matthew
Shepherd is the Wyoming student who was beaten to death for being gay in one of the worst hate crimes in recent memory; the
Foundation's aim is to educate the public on the dangers of homophobia). I said I'd be happy to make a donation as well, as it's
a great cause, and one I believe in strongly. He asked how much I'd like to donate. I queried how much he intended to seek
from Miramax. He said two hundred grand. I admitted I don't have pockets as deep as Miramax. He suggested I donate ten
grand, and I said "Done."

We spoke further about how important a film he thought 'Chasing Amy' was, and he informed me that if he'd been at GLAAD
at the time the film came out, he would've given it a GLAAD award. It was nice to hear, as I was always kind of bugged that
we didn't receive much GLAAD attention on 'Amy', considering how pro-gay the flick was. He said he wanted to meet me in
person to shake my hand, and I invited him to the office on Tuesday to do so, as well as pick up his check. I bid him adieu, and
thus ended a very friendly conversation that resulted in a couple of guys enlightened as to one another's feelings about some
potentially thorny issues, as well as the Matthew Shepherd Foundation being ten g's richer.

Then, yesterday afternoon, I fielded a phone call from Rebecca Ascher-Walsh of 'Entertainment Weekly', asking me to
comment on how GLAAD (in the person of Scott Seomin) was "horrified" by the homophobia on parade in 'Jay and Silent Bob
Strike Back'. I was taken aback, as Scott never once expressed being "horrified" by the jokes in the flick we'd discussed at
great lengths on the phone Friday. He said he was merely concerned.

Suddenly, I was being painted as homophobic by GLAAD.

This I can't quietly sit by and let happen.

Neither 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' nor myself are homophobic. Fuck, if anything, we're overtly gay-friendly.

In regards to the film, the openly gay journalists who saw it during the junket didn't express one iota of a reservation in regards
to the content of the flick. In fact, two of them thought it was pretty daring of me to have Silent Bob admitting that he'd have
gone down on Jay (see the flick). The even better barometer for me was Bob Hawk - a man whose opinion I trust more than
almost anyone on the planet. Bob watched the flick and never flinched, aside from laughing very, very heartily. And believe me
- if anyone was going to call me on the gay jokes in the flick, it was the producer of 'Trick' himself. But he didn't, and I can't
believe it's because he's self-loathing or afraid for his job (as Scott suggested the journalists at the junket must have been in
order to not be insulted by the movie).

But most importantly, *I* don't feel the film's homophobic. I would never (nor could never) make a homophobic film. I'm not
that guy, and here's why: I grew up fat. Even though I'm a white male, being fat my whole life still puts me in a minority category
as well, and has made me the butt of jokes my entire life. Trust me - I know how hurtful or damaging it can be to be called a
name or two. The last thing I'd ever want to do would be to mock others for who they ARE (except Ben Affleck; I can mock
him incessantly and never feel guilty about it, because a) he's my boy and it's done with affection, and b) he's Affleck, for God's
sake).

What really burns me about all this, though, is that now my donation to the Matthew Shepherd Foundation is going to be sullied
in the process. Based on what Rebecca Ascher-Walsh told me, my donation is now being portrayed as an admission of some
sort of culpability; that by giving ten thousand dollars to this worthy cause, I'm essentially saying "I'm sorry I made some gay
jokes."

And that's horse-shit.

I'm not sorry - because I didn't make jokes at the expense of the gay community. I made jokes at the expense of two
characters who neither I nor the audience have ever held up to be paragons of intellect. They're idiots. Funny idiots, yes, but
idiots all the same. And by making them and other mental midgets in the film so leery of homosexuality, I'm making fun of a
mind-set that exists in our culture - a mind-set, mind you, that I didn't create nor condone. And making fun of said mind-set
doesn't legitimize it, in my opinion; it de-fangs it.

I swear, I caught it from the right wing on 'Dogma', and now I'm catching it from the left wing on this flick. Which am I, people:
a bleeding heart liberal or a Bible-thumping conservative? And when the hell do I get to make a movie in which I don't have to
explain myself afterwards? When the hell do I get to make a movie that some special interest group won't demonize? I sweat -
it's like all that's left is to walk that thin, boring line down the middle that makes for really bland cinema. Because no matter what
you do and say, no matter how good your intentions are, sooner or later, you're going to offend SOMEBODY.

So I could use a few good character witnesses. If you folks wouldn't mind, can you drop GLAAD a CIVIL line and let them
now that I am not now, nor have I ever been, a homophobe? Please - no immature comments for these folks, alright? I've got
enough troubles without anyone reinforcing the worst suspicions Scott Seomin and GLAAD has about our fans. They can be
reached at glaad@glaad.org.

In closing, I'd like to leave you with an excerpt from the Jay and Silent mini-series that was re-released by Image Comics last
week under the title of 'Chasing Dogma'...

JAY
What the fuck is this country coming to?!?
First, we're accused of brown-humping each
other, and then we get kicked to the fucking
curb for having a smoke! You know, there was
a time when a man could fuck his friend, AND
enjoy a goddamn toke, and nobody said shit!
Where's the so-called freedom for the pursuit
of happiness?! What if I WANTED to fuck you,
Silent Bob?
(quieter)
I'd never, because I fucking love chicks man -
even though I know you think about cuddling
up to my three-piece set all the time.
(continuing)
But what If I was all pent up, and all I needed to
keep me from going postal on that bus was to
bust a nut in your dark and stinky? That's the
problem with the climate of consciousness on
this planet today! Everyone gives too much of
a shit about who fucks what! The moral majority
has to wake up and realize that it's better to have
two guys stink-dicking or two chicks gargling clit,
than it is to have four complete fucking lunatics
nine millimeting random people from a rooftop
because they're not allowed to 'unpack their bags'
in whatever 'hotel rooms' they want, so to speak!
And by that token, I should be able to scream - if
I so desired - from the bathrooms of the buses
that traverse the unending roads of this great
country, to the bathrooms of the public parks
and rest-stops that dot the landscape like a
thousand points of light...
(second balloon)
"I'M HERE! I'M QUEER! GET USED TO IT!!!"

Homophobic indeed.

I'm sure this flick is going to make me squirm.

But I hope it's got something redeeming about it. I don't think Kevin Smith would fuck w/me like that.

On a lighter note...

Posted by Kevin at 64.167.84.14 on August 01, 2001 at 14:43:32:

FX has been kind enough to turn the station over to us for a night of programming they're calling 'Jay and Silent Bob Take
Over'.

It'll run Tuesday, August 21st - the night before the flick's release.

Here's the run-down...

9-10pm Back 2 back epsiodes of SON OF A BEACH w/Mark Hammill

10-10:30pm THE TEST, with Kevin, Jennifer Schwalbach, Jason Mewes, and Mark Hammill.

10:30pm-12:30am CLERKS

12:30-2:30am MALLRATS -(pending network clearance)

'Clerks' is not being edited, however they're going to drop out the audio under the diassaproved language (which means you'll
hear about three lines of dialogue in the whole film). Here are the words you will not hear: pussy, cunt, fuck(motherfucker,
fucking),cock & shit.

'Mallrats', I believe, is the ABC cut of the movie - the one in which Jay is sometimes voiced by someone who isn't Jay.

I believe the Comedy Central special 'Reel Comedy with Jay and Silent Bob' airs first on August 15th.

I'm doing Conan's show on the night of the 17th.

I think I'm also lined up for 'Politically Incorrect' and Craig Kilbourne's (sp?) show.

And the 'Entertainment Weekly' in which the GLAAD story appears hits stands Friday.

Joy.

More as I learn about it.

And remember, folks: civility, please.

that is, featuring Jason Mewes the young chap that plays Jay instead of a fact-filled update. (the TV commercials for JSBSB, imo, aren't very good)

Just a quick note before i go into this story.......It's all my personal
views.

None of it has anything to do with the other fine folk at VIEW ASKEW

There was a very funny incident that happened whilst shooting JAY AND
SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK at a bar named VINYL in Los Angeles.

Now...Anyone who was at San Diego and was at the panel saw a videotape
that included the COCK KNOCKER FILES....And after that was a really short
clip of Mewes dressed to the nines in pimp gear.....Callled appropriately
enough...THE PIMP FILES.......There will be more of that in the
documentary.

One thing I don't think WILL be allowed in the documentary is some other
footage that night......

Ethan and his Hollwood Possee telling Mewes.....and I quote...." Get
lost....Hollywood is OUR turf" all fucking WEST SIDE STORY style.

What began as Mewes innocently walking up to Ethan in the VIP section to
say hi....culiminted in one of Ethan's (snicker) peeps getting in Mewes'
face...."Ethan don't want to be bugged"...something confusing to Jason, of
course....because of their history.

Jason persisted...dude got in Mewes' face even more......Mewes shoved him
over a couch.

Cut to

I walk outside the bar to be greeted by a who's who of young Hollywood
looking to protect their turf from the JERSEY threat.

I wish I was making this up.

And as Jason isn't yet as big and powerful as Ethans H-Wood B-Boy
possee......Leo, Tobey et al

Ethan backed the home team.

Left our boy from Jersey out to dry.

And I have it all on tape.

I mean...It was pretty funny to get fight eyes from SPIDERMAN...(Leo
however wasn't there)

The story gets a little more detailed.....but that's the gist.

It's rare one gets to witness such a display of misguided wigger B-boy
posturing........Let alone from Hollywood "elite"

It's a sad state of affairs.

-M

P.S

To say something about Mewes...I talked to him tonight and said i was
going to post this story.........The only thing he said was that he missed
Ethan...and tried calling him a couple of days ago.

Stay gold pony boy

The ABC's (ACTOR, Burton, Chicago)

Posted by Kevin at etntwn1-ubr4-4-hfc-0252-d8d8aea9.rdc1.nj.comcastatwork.com on August 09, 2001 at 21:37:04:

ACTOR

ACTOR (A Commitment to Our Roots) is a charity that Jim McLaughlin at Wizard set up on behalf of old comic book pros
who've fallen on financially hard times, even though they created characters that've populated the four color pages for decades.
To help out, View Askew and ACTOR are going to be holding two charity screenings of 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' on
Saturday the 18th, at WizardCon in Chicago. Fifteen bucks will get you one of the two hundred seats at either a 7:00pm or an
11:00 pm screening (that's four hundred seats total). Both Jay and I will be in attendance (at both the Con itself and the
screenings). Tickets will go on sale after my panel.

BURTON

Lest anyone think some sort of holy jihad is brewing betwixt me and the mighty Tim, I'd like to set the record straight here.

I've always enjoyed the films of Tim Burton to varying degrees. Nothing's going to change that.

Yes - I worked on a 'Superman Lives' script that he shit-canned when he got the gig helming it. Yes - I've told a very
long-winded story about the saga of 'Superman' at college gigs, comic book conventions, the Stern show, and on Conan
O'Brien (only when asked about it, though). Yes - I've signed many a bootleg copy of my 'Superman Lives' script "Fuck Tim
Burton," (with tongue firmly planted in cheek).

But, no - I do not think the 'Planet of the Apes' ending was stolen from the Jay and Silent Bob mini-series 'Chasing Dogma',
nor am I thinking about taking anyone to court. I called the similarities (which I believe are simply coincidental) to the attention
of my good friend Lou Loumenick over at the NY Post and made a few jokey comments about being pissed and litigious that
seem to have been taken seriously by a slew of other news outlets (doesn't anybody pick up a phone to confirm shit anymore,
rather than just poaching a piece out of another paper?). This story has gotten way out of hand.

If Tim, indeed, made that statement about never wanting to read anything I created (although, in truth, the statement didn't come
directly from his lips; it was provided by the office of his publicist, Bumble Ward), that's fine. I'll still be there on opening day
for any Tim Burton movie, and I urge you all to do the same. Because, whether he tells a coherent story or not, he's still one of
the most interesting (albeit testy, apparently) directors working today. And that should always be supported.

So please, folks - let's drop the call to arms against the guy who gave us 'Beetlejuice' just because he's not a fan of my stuff.
Shit, if you're gonna go on the war-path against every motherfucker who doesn't care for my particular brand of whimsy, you'll
never have enough energy left to get your asses to the theater on August 24th when 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' opens.

That's my ham-fisted way of letting you know that the release date for the flick has been changed yet again. Yes, folks - the
flick now opens on Friday, August 24th as originally planned - not on the 22nd. Long story. Don't ask. Just go. Please.

In other news, today I taped a bunch of wrap-arounds for IFC's 'Talking During the Movie'. It airs next week, I believe.
Following that, I taped a bunch of wrap-arounds for MTV2. Yesterday, I taped wrap-arounds for the Comedy Central airing
of 'Half Baked' (which airs right after the 'Reel Comedy with Jay and Silent Bob' special).

I'm the wrap-around king.

Tomorrow, Jay and I shoot some commercial spots for the movie, to augment the TV campaign. I've watched some excellent
new spots this evening that'll start airing next week, when the MAJOR ad-buy kicks in.

All looks just about set for the opening - two weeks from yesterday.

Since I'm back-and-forth between coasts (and Austin and Chicago) for the next two weeks, we won't be having a Board
screening of the flick in Jersey unfortunately. This bums me out, as it had become something of a tradition since 'Amy'. If this
changes over the course of the next week, I'll let you know.

That's all for now.
------

on a side note, Afroman's "Because I Got High" (off the soundtrack) is blowing up on radio.

best movie of the summer (no biggie there)

thoroughly enjoyed it. some minor gag's didnt work, but most of 'em did. my friend, whom i went w/, was only familiar w/ Mallrats and Dogma, so i had to hip him to some of the other jokes n whatnot, but he still thought it was really funny (he seemed offended the entire movie *shrug*).

oh .. disappointed there were no mentions of 'the whale' or sega hockey ..

If you're a Kevin Smith fan AND saw most of his movies, you will like this because this film is a thank you to all as well as a closing of the chapter (also being a Star Wars fan will help too).

If you're not, you're going to hate this flick. There are no "messages" as with his previous films (besides the "Hollywood is fake and internet fans are geeks"). As said before this film is for the fans.

With that said....

I LOVED IT!

i'd agree ... i've been a casual observer of the View Askew boards since about '97 ... all around the world, it's the same song.

to make a movie which is basically a big thankyou to his fans knowing hes going to get blasted by just about every critic in the world is a daring fucking thing to do.
obviously this was not meant to be a film on the caliber of chasing amy but u know too many people are not going to get it.

http://www.viewaskew.com/newboard/messages297/1165.html

Here's a review round-up I received this morning, from papers across the country. Most folks work off the star rating system (*), but for those that don't, it's broken down to positive and negative.

For the curious...

Albany Gazette - Mixed to Positive
Arizona Daily Star - Positive
Atlanta Journal and Constitution - Grade B
Austin American Statesman - Positive
Baltimore Sun - *** (three stars)
Buffalo News - *** and a half
Boston Globe - Positive review (many thanks, Jay Carr)
Boston Herald - Mixed to negative
Chicago Sun Times - *** (many thanks, Roger)
Chicago Tribune - * and a half (lose my email address, Caro)
Chicago Newcity - Mixed to positive
Chicago Reader - Mixed to positive
Cincinnati Enquirer - ** and a half
Cinn City Beat - Grade C
Cleveland Sun - $$$$ (they use money signs, not stars)
Cleveland Call and Post - Positive
Dallas Morning News - Grade C
Dayton Daily News - Grade C
Detroit Oakland Press - ***
Detroit News - 3 Rose Review (roses instead of stars)
Detroit Free Press - *** (many thanks, Terry)
Hartford Courant - Positive
LA Daily News - *
LA Times - Mixed to negative
Las Vegas Weekly - Grade A- (we're money in Vegas)
Miami Herald - ** (Rene - don't tell me how much you dig the movie in the room and then give me two stars, man; that's just callow)
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Mixed to Positive
Minneapolis Star Tribune - *** and a half
Newark Star Ledger - Positive
New York Daily News - * and a half
New York Newsday - 0 stars (a career first!!!)
New York Post - ** and a half
New York Times - Mixed
St Paul Pioneer Press - **
Philly Inquirer - ** and a half
Pittsburgh Post Gazette - ***
Pittsburgh Tribune - * and a half
Phoenix Tribune - Positive
Phoenix New Times - Negative
Portland Oregonian - Positive
Portland Willamette Week - Positive
Portland Tribune - Positive
Portland Mercury - Positive
Portland Citysearch - **** (I'm moving to Portland, folks)
Richmond Times-Dispatch - ***
Rochester Freetime - Positive
Rolling Stone - Positive
Sacramento Bee - * and a half
San Diego North County Times - Grade C-
San Diego Reader - Negative
San Francisco Chronicle - Positive
San Francisco Examiner - *** and a half (and the reviewer's name is Jeff Anderson, ironically enough)
Seattle Post Intelligencer - Grade C
Seattle Times - **
St Louis Post Dispatch - ***
St. Petersburg Times - Grade A-
Tampa Tribune - Positive
US Weekly - ***
USA Today - *** (God Bless Mike Clark)
Washington Post - Positive (from Desson Howe, and that's all that matters)
Washington Times - *

There should be plenty more, but those are the ones I have handy.

Not bad, I say. Not bad at all. Even the reviews that aren't kind point out that it's a funny movie for somebody, if not them.

Well, except that one critic who wrote the review Ming linked below. Yipes - what an unhappy cuss.

I've gotta say, though - one of my favorite reviews was the 0 star Newsday review. Granted, it's historic for us (our first!), but that's not what does it for me. What does do it for me is the fact that it pointed out folks were applauding during the screening. Shit, that's a classy admission for a critic who hated the movie.

Here at View Askew, even in defeat, we're able to find a little victory.

So....

What the hell are you doing sitting here reading this? Get your ass to the nearest theater and go see 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back'! Again!

And pray to your respective gods for a sweet opening weekend.

Me? I'm looking for ten to fifteen mill.

I think we can do it.

And a closing thought: most of the reviews I read (especially the negative ones) point out that this movie is for folks who liked our other movies. And that sentiment is correct. I made this movie for you guys as much as I did for me - probably more for you, actually. Please enjoy the flick, with my humble thanks. You put us where we are today - and I'm so very grateful for that every moment of my blessed life.

from what i've heard this is the last of his movies to include these characters, so yeah it was a huge sendoff for him.

He brought everyone back and did every inappropriate joke he could think of.

By the way i went with my girlfriend who had never seen anything Star Wars related at all. She kept looking at me at the Greedo joke, when Mark Hamil lost his hand...again.

But yeah i enjoyed it.

Another funny ass movie in the "Wacky crosscountry/end up in Hollywood" genre.

This "film" takes a chain saw and exposes the seedy world
behind the motion picture business. It was excellent.
Props to Mark Hamil and Carrie Fisher :p
Peace.

In response to Reply # 0

This was perhaps the dumbest movie I've seen in a long time.

It's immature. It's filled with dick and fart jokes befitting any adolescent. All the characters are morons.

You will be very entertained. Somehow, Kevin Smith succeeded where Mallrats failed. Watching the movie feels like my friends decided to surprise me by somehow getting millions of dollars and famous actors to film this superbly idiotic movie. It knows it's main audience, comic book/movie high school "cool" geeks, but it's also got enough for us twentysomething children of the 80s.

-several nods to Warner Bros. cartoon humor.
-the friggin' Time make a cameo appearance.
-lots of John Landis' outrageous humor.
-80s culture references galore (I mean, the Magic Mystery Tour Bus is in it, complete with Scooby and the Gang!!)
-the obligatory Star Wars references.
-the self-referencing "this is a bad movie and we know it" running gags.
-a tie-up of just about every other kevin smith film from clerks to chasing amy (there's references to dogma but that one was pretty much self-contained).
-actors that play several different characters (affleck, lee)

This movie is so funny. It's very dumb at times, I mean really dumb, as in farts are supposed to be hilarious dumb, but it's got some really good parts. With Chasing Amy Kevin Smith showed he can make a really good movie, with Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back he's just trying to make a helplessly stoopid movie.

"Any fan of soul, no, any MUSIC LOVER must own Sinclair's "La Bon Attitude." I mean it. It's great. He's the best thing to come out of France since wine and cheese. I mean it. You will be wowed. And the fact that I don't know the cat, can't speak French to save my life and am not getting paid to write this should tell you all something."

Weak sauce. SO weak. same old shit, not that funny anymore. there are only 2 noteable parts. Jay's line "Hey, you ever have your asshole licked by a fat man wearing a trench coat?"---hilarious.

Good Will Hunting 2:Hunting Season with Gus Van Sant counting bills in the corner. Genius parody. i dont know how he got Gus to do that to himself.

If really cant see anyone enjoying this movie if theyre not a Kevin Smith fan and havent seen most if not all of his movies.
Personally I found it hilarious, stupid as fuck but hillarious but i think if I never saw any one of his movies i would have hated it, theres just too many inside jokes. half the theater was cracking up and the other half was just like wtf??
