learn how to study movies.
I saw Harry Potter. It bored me to tears.
Maybe it's because I've been in and around this movie business for a minute, but I can tell fairly accurately which movies I will like and which I won't just from the materials available to the public before the film's release. Rarely, if ever, do I change my mind about it after I see it. If I think I'll like it, I end up liking it. If I think it will suck, after seeing it I think it sucks.
Remember, we're talking opinion. The more educated the opinion, the better. But it's a subjective opinion.
Still, don't get frustrated with me because I can, before seeing the actual film, form a qualified, educated opinion, i.e. one that will hold up and remain consistant after viewing. I can do this by watching trailers, reading production notes, reading news reports, examining the resumes of the people involved, examing the previous work of involved parties and weighing its relevance to the current project, listening to rumor reports and weighing the sources, and on and on. If there's a movie that doesn't have a lot of material available beforehand, it's more difficult to form an opinion on it without seeing it. But even then, from watching a trailer, or reading something from a critic or other source I trust, I can get a gut feeling on it. And with movies like these two, there is an overabundance of information available from which to form an opinion. And form an opinion I do.
If you can't do that -- or are unwilling to do that because you don't think it's fair to the movie or some such thing -- that's fine for you.
Or is it just the wording that bugs you? Would you prefer it if I simply said "I will like FOTR more than I Harry Potter," as opposed to saying on will suck and one will be better? Or am I not allowed to say that either? (Notice, I haven't said that FOTR will be great. I've only said will be better than Harry Potter. After actually seeing Harry Potter, IMO it wouldn't be difficult for FOTR to be better.)
Honestly, I haven't come across anyone I know - in real life or through the internet, regular fans or critics or whatever level, love the Harry Potter movie or hate it - who doesn't think FOTR will be better. Maybe there are a couple out there. But I'm certain they are in the minority. So why do you have a problem with me saying it?
Do me a favor. If you see FOTR, will please let me know whether or not you thought it was better than Harry Potter? Even if you liked Harry Potter, which I'm guessing you did.
