i nominate:
Mystic River- so nown Laura Linney is a mafia queen?

The French Connection-what a fucking let down. the "Blair Witch" ending with a tacked on text explanation.

Limbo-i don't mind an ending that's a little ambiguous, but damn. David Strathairn deserved better than that.

It was too sappy, Americans love their happy endings.

But the "alternate ending" was the original ending, first time director with a target audience HATING the real ending.

financially speaking. It was a great movie, but would I and my other friends have bought it on DVD if the ending would have stayed? Hell no. Plus "Fuckin Chuck Norris" is hilarious. I mean that's great now that it's the alternate ending, it almost seems comical, but it wouldn't have flown w/ critics and the audience. I mean it was a "True underdog story", normally in those you want the underdog to win, so it makes sense that they switched it.

I completely agree. It isn't feasable to have that kind of ending in this country.

I just liked the other ending better

they build up all this tension and you're just WAITING for that final battle and nothing happens. Instead of having one more attack or obstacle, the birds just sit there and they drive away. Come on! The whole time I was watching it, I was on the edge of my seat and then they just drive off. No attack, no final battle, nada. I thought it was awful.

In response to Reply # 23

(not to mention the emotion intensity high-point of the film)

I'm referring to the RESOLUTION. the ENDING. as in the final scene.

which was all anti-climatic and just stopped.

The IDEA off the scene is good...the execution sucks. And the on-screen text shouldn't have appeared until after a fade-out. It would be much more solemn and serious that way.

That shit ended for all the world like a TV movie.

The alien might as well have been terrorizing Emilio Estevez and his baseball team of misfits.

I mean "Mi Vida Loca" is played out, even in the WHITEST of circles. It missed "the latin craze" by about 3 years, and Antonio Banderas' character was also playing a stereotypical, "macho latin" role, which also played on how ridiculous it was...

but I'm sure in was on purpose.

Reality check: according to the 2000 census, there were more than 31,000 black
physicians and surgeons, 33,000 black lawyers and 5,000 black dentists.
Guess how many black athletes are playing professional basketball, football
and baseball combined. About 1,400. In fact, there are more board-certified
black cardiologists than there are black professional basketball players.

She did get her Lady Macbeth on didn't she?

I thought it was a bit forced, but I completely understood the idea that she had to convince both herself and her husband that what happened was the right thing. And in doing so, she comes across as mad persuasive and a bit on the demented side.

All in all, I loved that scene.

I don't know why some people totally disregard the rest of the movie just because of that scene, i guess they just think it means more or is deeper than it actually is......some people go to the extreme and say Lady macbeth, but for all we know she could just be trying to make her husband not feel so bad

(even a little bit...one other scene even!) it might have made more sense. instead it was just out of nowhere and seemed pretty pointless.

In response to Reply # 32

That's why it left a sour taste in many viewers' mouths (myself included). I know what she was doing, and what the intention of the director was, through interviews and talking to people who read the book and what have you. But because of the fact that Linney had NO character in the film and all of a sudden she's demented, it DOES give her a Lady MacBeth vibe, and I completely understand why this 180 that the film takes could and would piss people off.

They gave an insignificant character a significant part of the film. The way she talks to the MAIN character in that scene directly affects his end result. Instead of coming off as strong mother and slightly dumb but well-intentioned father, it comes off as Lady MacBeth and stupid oaf pawn. It diminishes how Sean Penn is viewed at the end of the film, and because this scene forcing an insignificant one-note character to the spotlight comes at the end of the film, it leaves a sour taste. I would've rather left the film with Kevin Bacon on the phone with his wife crying. If the movie had ended there, it would've felt like a home run. Instead, it's a double at best.

I got the feeling it was a 4 hour movie that needed to be cut to 2 and 1/2. Aside from Laura Linney, Tim Robbins' wife's suspicion and their falling out progressed a little too quickly, and Kevin Bacon's silent wife, and the mute boy's friend who just came out of nowhere to be the killer...etc. etc.

True, it was kinda weird how this ethereal being sent out signals for trillions of miles, for god knows HOW long, with complicated instructions on how to construct a complicated, worm-hole traveling device...

just to have some coffee table-chat, on some "Hey, I'm just trying to make you think, slugger"-shit.

It took the form of her father to make her feel more comfortable.

I would've been like "Hey, you better answer more than that! We've got questions, and I'm going to have the press and scientists UP MY ASS for the rest of my life...million dollar book deals, movie rights, and your just gonna trot down this eheric, make-believe seashore with your pant legs rolled up like John Tesh, after trying to charm me with your highly-evolved 'hey kiddo' socio-commentary on how 'small' and 'insignificant' we are in this universe of possibilites! I could've went to Borders for this!"

Look
I found it very interesting from the Hollywood side to make a movie with scientific context, about an atheist woman who is dealing with religion in the system
That's me
That part of the movie I just found it very dissapointing because it seem to me creators of the movie they want it to give some spiritual touch. I was hoping they will keep it science only.

Yeah, what you said
My girl told me the same thing
My interpretation,it might not be everybody else's
So
Who's right?
Who's wrong?

I enjoy the movie for the most part, and I feel it gets a bad rap, but the main complaint I hear is how it was her father, and even though I kinda agree it was lame...it wasn't her father.

I guess the obvious message was that even tho she didn't believe in something, and McCaunaghey believed in God...neither were "right" or "wrong"...but believe in the possibility of something else.

It dropped a little science hodge podge in there, like when he said "What an interesting mix of species".

He strolled through there all the time on some "I can't be touched" shit, and at the same time, pretended to be buddy-buddy with'em.

Remember when they went there to see his girl, Denzel told Ethan Hawkes character "They all busters. I got them under my thumb"...something like that, like he's got it like that.

They showed how the gangster cats really felt when he said "I can't stand that motherf--ker". Remember, Ethan walked through there with a gun, and the gangster cats were trying him, trying to punk him, and he kept walking. He let Bone and them know he wasn't there to violate, just to handle personal business...and they let him through.

After all that crap, he got respect, and that was it. They didn't present him with a red rag and throw him on their shoulders lol They let him go. He "put in work", so to speak, 'cause he didn't ask for help...he did it himself, while Denzel's character was like "One of YOU kill him, and I'll pay you".

That was possibly the worst ending in the history of all endings...including this year's election, the break up of the Fat Boys and when they cut my food stamps.

I liked how the movie set Baldwin to be some kind've super-stalker/killer with unlimited resources in the building he owns, and when it was all said and done, the "nice guy" ended up being the killer (plot-twist cliche, but look what year it was), and Baldwin, who they built-up to be a super-killer, was just a lame-ass pervert who was trying to get his nuts off.

Not too bad IMO

when hmoegirl spit her poem up on the stage - it was like a perfect description of what Ray was facing, and then the Washington monument, represents not only the tangible givernement and "system," but also the ideologies therein, and yes, prison, i don't think the bars at the bottom were an accident.

I don't know when I see Ray run up to it I see it like he's confronting the shit head on - which is a facet of her poem, which depicts his situation; its all reflexive.

I like it.

So rarely does the end of a movie ruin the beginning and the middle of a movie, but Snake Eyes succeeds. It doesn't move downhill when Gary Sinise is revealed (trust me, I'm doing you a favor), it plummets with the speed of a meteor falling from space through the Earth's atmosphere. Then Nick Cage gets all big and famous, gets caught on the scam, then the movie ends with him going to jail for 8 months or something, his new found girlfriend faithfully waiting for him.
WTF?!?!!?!?!?!?!

THE LAST TIME
Muhibb Dyer

Let this be the last time.
The last gun shots,
The last candlelight vigil,
The last eulogy 50 years too soon.

You see the problem is not just poverty and guns,
The problem is the "good peoples" unwillingness
To sacrifice their lives for the love of peace,
The love of community...the love of love,
Like our children sacrifice their lives,
For the love of money...or the love of pride.

And we are tired of the "black on black, juvenile delinquent,
he never had a chance" stories.
We need a group of men who will author
A new reality.

Carl, Kirk & DeShawn scream from their graves
For a new reality.
One that brings a meaning to another incident
That never should've happened.

For the love of God, let this be the last time
We allow these mean streets to swallow
Another child and we look the other way
Unmoved...
Until it happens to one of ours.

"So in the end, was it worth it? Jesus Christ. How irreparably changed my life has become. It's always the last days of summer and I've been left out in the cold with no door to get back in. I'll grant you I've had more than my share of poignant moments. Life passes most people by when they're busy making grand plans for it. Throughout my lifetime I've left pieces of my heart here and there. And now, there's almost barely enough to stay alive. But I force a smile, knowing that my ambition far exceeded my talent. There are no more white horses or pretty ladies at my door."

I think if you end up pitying him, you're not fully understanding the movie and letting the spielbergism of the music etc tug at yuor hearstrings. The point of the ending is that, yes he is a real person with his own story, but he did do all of these things. Yes, it was some shit that his suppposed "last run" is the one that got him caught up, but really it's not like he's getting punished for anything he didn't do. I think you need to understand that at the end of the film, and then the ending is great.

1. Bishop WAS a sucker. He punked out with the Puerto Rican gang all the time, and never wanted to fight until his boys were between them. Plus, Bishop COULDN'T fight, and always did those wild, flared-out arm swings like a 4th grade girl on a playground.

2. Q should've let his ass drop. I can't believe he killed all his friends, and tried to kill him, and when he was hanging off the side of the building, Q had a "Oh my god, this is my BOY!"-moment. I could understand if he was some junkie who screwed him over, but after all that...Q STILL tried to save him? I would've been like "Man fuuuck yooouuuu" lol

3. Tupac's character was overhyped, and as likeable as a tumor. They tried to make him a wild cat, but he was obnoxious. Maybe it was Pac's acting, or maybe it was the writing, but his character was terrible. He was a hoe that whole movie...far from the quasi-Scarface underdog they wanted him to be.

4. That "you got the juice now" line at the end of the movie is said to be terrible, but I don't think it's even THAT bad compared to Pac's character.

5. What was the point of Q's girlfriend? Besides eye candy? She was like...there. He would go to her house, eat, bone her, and leave...pointless dialoge lol "Look, this character's is MUCH deeper than he seems, 'cause he has an older, 20-something year old girlfriend who's doing well for herself". Boo! For that, they should've just did a lil'intermission when she got up and stripped.

but the whole movie sucked so cotdamned bad, it was inevitable

i must admit that i enjoyed seeing it in the theater because i was treated to a loud "THAT SUCKED" by another audience member as the first credit ran up the screend

that was the best part of the whole experience

Bit of a letdown only cuz we never got 2 see all of House in action but the ending 4 me was still cool enuff. Wouldnt call it horrible & by far not worse than the others mentioned on this list

man that good ending was blown to shit because of the shit they takced on at the end. lord of the rings cause well pick a bad ending. and i am surprised no one has said
dun dudu BADBOYS drive the shanty town in big truck ruining poor folks homes. making cuba one of the biggest drug exporters(?) and then finally the worst line in cinema:

Bad guy: (in bad spanish accent)Drop your guns
lawrences sister: ok i'll drop it right on that mine.
AAAARGH!

That ending was def not what I had expected. I left the theater pissed, but hey Spike Lee is always throwing a curve ball
