It was too sappy, Americans love their happy endings.

But the "alternate ending" was the original ending, first time director with a target audience HATING the real ending.

financially speaking. It was a great movie, but would I and my other friends have bought it on DVD if the ending would have stayed? Hell no. Plus "Fuckin Chuck Norris" is hilarious. I mean that's great now that it's the alternate ending, it almost seems comical, but it wouldn't have flown w/ critics and the audience. I mean it was a "True underdog story", normally in those you want the underdog to win, so it makes sense that they switched it.

I'm referring to the RESOLUTION. the ENDING. as in the final scene.

which was all anti-climatic and just stopped.

The IDEA off the scene is good...the execution sucks. And the on-screen text shouldn't have appeared until after a fade-out. It would be much more solemn and serious that way.

That shit ended for all the world like a TV movie.

But the rest of the movie sucked as well.

Unbreakable had a shiddy ending as well so maybe we should call this the M. Night Shylasux thread

She did get her Lady Macbeth on didn't she?

I thought it was a bit forced, but I completely understood the idea that she had to convince both herself and her husband that what happened was the right thing. And in doing so, she comes across as mad persuasive and a bit on the demented side.

All in all, I loved that scene.

I don't know why some people totally disregard the rest of the movie just because of that scene, i guess they just think it means more or is deeper than it actually is......some people go to the extreme and say Lady macbeth, but for all we know she could just be trying to make her husband not feel so bad

That's why it left a sour taste in many viewers' mouths (myself included). I know what she was doing, and what the intention of the director was, through interviews and talking to people who read the book and what have you. But because of the fact that Linney had NO character in the film and all of a sudden she's demented, it DOES give her a Lady MacBeth vibe, and I completely understand why this 180 that the film takes could and would piss people off.

It'd only be bad if one of the main characters made a 180 when their character was already developed

They gave an insignificant character a significant part of the film. The way she talks to the MAIN character in that scene directly affects his end result. Instead of coming off as strong mother and slightly dumb but well-intentioned father, it comes off as Lady MacBeth and stupid oaf pawn. It diminishes how Sean Penn is viewed at the end of the film, and because this scene forcing an insignificant one-note character to the spotlight comes at the end of the film, it leaves a sour taste. I would've rather left the film with Kevin Bacon on the phone with his wife crying. If the movie had ended there, it would've felt like a home run. Instead, it's a double at best.

I found it very interesting from the Hollywood side to make a movie with scientific context, about an atheist woman who is dealing with religion in the system
That's me
That part of the movie I just found it very dissapointing because it seem to me creators of the movie they want it to give some spiritual touch. I was hoping they will keep it science only.

I enjoy the movie for the most part, and I feel it gets a bad rap, but the main complaint I hear is how it was her father, and even though I kinda agree it was lame...it wasn't her father.

I guess the obvious message was that even tho she didn't believe in something, and McCaunaghey believed in God...neither were "right" or "wrong"...but believe in the possibility of something else.

It dropped a little science hodge podge in there, like when he said "What an interesting mix of species".

I didn't really like the movie, and the ending just sealed the deal.
Her death was unbelievable, and then the face in the sky pushed it over the top.

The damn white boy turns into superman and shit. After that the hood flips the fuck out and lets the devil live.

He strolled through there all the time on some "I can't be touched" shit, and at the same time, pretended to be buddy-buddy with'em.

Remember when they went there to see his girl, Denzel told Ethan Hawkes character "They all busters. I got them under my thumb"...something like that, like he's got it like that.

They showed how the gangster cats really felt when he said "I can't stand that motherf--ker". Remember, Ethan walked through there with a gun, and the gangster cats were trying him, trying to punk him, and he kept walking. He let Bone and them know he wasn't there to violate, just to handle personal business...and they let him through.

After all that crap, he got respect, and that was it. They didn't present him with a red rag and throw him on their shoulders lol They let him go. He "put in work", so to speak, 'cause he didn't ask for help...he did it himself, while Denzel's character was like "One of YOU kill him, and I'll pay you".

That movie was truly the best example I can think of where the whole cast and crew just packed everything up and said fuck it, let's all go home.

This movie gave me the same feeling as if someone had been telling me a really long joke, and then he just walked away right before telling the punchline.

with the exception of maybe crooklyn, not one decent ending in the bunch
