"The Bollywood Post"
Tue Jan-18-05 05:39 AM by johnbook

let's talk Bollywood...after all its the largest film production entity in the world...more movies get made there than anywhere else...and i wanna know more about it...

Who are the hot directors?
Who are the best actors/actresses?
Which films are must-see?

anybody got expertise on this?

...people who have some knowledge about all films. I love what I've seen from Bollywood, but not like some other people I know who actually went to India to not only experience their culture, but to see how films are made.

Hopefully we here in the Popcorn can help you out.

Too many movies, but I can recommend two:

Lagaan

(it was directed by Gurinder Chadha, of Bend it like Beckham fame) and as someone noted below, she isn't a Bollywood director anyway

neither is Chadha, of course... Bride and Prejudice is more like a tribute to Bollywood films than the real thing

My prof/boss is from india, so he put me on to em.

The amazing thing is that the try to put everything in one movie. You get action, drama, a musical, comedy, thriller whatever you want. My prof/boss inform me that when you go to the movies in India, the idea is that you get your money's worth, so the movies may seem cluttered with som much going on.

Also the songs are kinda hot. Like in india, the sdtk of the movies are always the biggest hits.

And no funny biz in the movies no tongue, no pecks no nothing, which is amazing, b/c u might not notice it at first. Almost like a weird skit, soon as it seems someone is about to kiss, its singin time.

but i like em

thats all i got

no hot love scenes? there has to be some indie bollywood directors that put some steam in their flicks

ok so then lets talk about hindi porn...does it exist and do they sing and dance in those too?

the people that are the most giving hardworking and capable of making the world better usually don't have the ego or ambition to be a leader. they dont' see any interest in superficial rewards..they don't care if their name ever appears in the press. they actually enjoy the process of helping others. they are in the moment.

In response to Reply # 14

i can remember when i was a teen there was a big scandal because one Bollywood film dared to actually show a KISS! it was banned and everything... it was like the Indian equivalent of Basic Instinct or something.

and even now as Aisharya Rai is crossing over to American audiences, she's kinda concerned about what her fans back home will think of her when they see her actually kissing on the screen in Hollywood films

the closest i can think of actual sex and nudity being shown in an Indian film is Kama Sutra. and that was directed by Mira Nair, who isn't based in India at all and is not connected in any way to the Bombay film industry

I've seen two- Junglee and one really old one about a mother and her rebellious son named... "Birju" (<<phonetics). I loved them both, and love the singing- I listen to Indian music a lot because of it. Try Mahalakshmi if you like that kind of music.

Please suggest some good films and how I might get them?

Amitab is the biggest film star in Bollywood history. I would start with his films from the 70's. One of my all time faves however is Qurbani starring Vinod Khanna and Amjad Khan. This film features every over-the-top genre device that makes Bollwood great under the influence of Blaxploitation. The only thing missing, if i remember correctly, is the brothers seperated at birth storyline.

good luck,

yes these are films from India and are mostly known for the formulaic pattern they follow - hero and heroine + musical numbers. they are basically a combination of musical, comedy, drama, and action balled up into one...

“Stand out firmly for Justice as witness before God, even against yourselves, against your kin and against your parents, against people who are rich or poor. Do not follow your inclinations or desires lest you deviate from Justice. Remember, God is the best of Protectors and well acquainted with all that you do.”
-Qur’an 4:135

"Don't be deceived when they tell you things are better now. Even if there's no poverty to be seen because the poverty's been hidden. Even if you ever got more wages and could afford to buy more of these new and useless goods which industries foist on you and even if it seems to you that you never had so much, that is only the slogan of those who still have much more than you. Don't be taken in when they paternally pat you on the shoulder and say that there's no inequality worth speaking of and no more reason to fight because if you believe them they will be completely in charge in their marble homes and granite banks from which they rob the people of the world under the pretence of bringing them culture. Watch out, for as soon as it pleases them they'll send you out to protect their gold in wars whose weapons, rapidly developed by servile scientists, will become more and more deadly until they can with a flick of the finger tear a million of you to pieces."

to the billions of people who enjoy the films around the world...Bollywood films outsell most hollywood films by millions and millions of dollars. They represent a fantasy of life. India is a very poor country and these films are the only entertainment (and escape) for most of the country. There's no bowling alleys and nightclubs and basketball courts and all the things we find recreation in in most of the country (someone please correct me if i'm wrong in this) so Bollywood films are how people get their entertainment. So the directors chock 3+ hours full of comedy, drama, action, song, and dance. The two highest paid actors in the world are bollywood actors. Its a huge part of Hindi culture (and other Middle Eastern/Eastern Asian cultures) and its not 'retarded'.

there's no excuse for such a limited creative output in a medium that allows for the entire spectrum of human experience.

they don't get a pass just 'cuz they're from another country. why not branch out and try something different?

watch...all the responses to this post will make some mention of the Indian culture. but i'm sure that A) the Bollywood film-makers are capable of making more varied films and B) Indian film-goers are willing to give them a chance

I think it's silly to suggest that movies that contain so many different elements suffer from limited creative output.

38. "uh... what makes a musical 'limited creativity'?"
In response to Reply # 33

i think the musical is actually the MOST creative form in cinema, though it seems to have fallen out of favor with most audiences

>but i'm sure that A) the
>Bollywood film-makers are capable of making more varied
>films and B) Indian film-goers are willing to give them a
>chance

uh... i doubt this.

the musical has been the primary format of the Bombay film industry since the 1920s... right or wrong, it's an integral part of the Indian film experience. it's one of their conventions, the same way we have our own conventions in Western cinema

there ARE independent filmmakers in India who produce an alternative cinema to the flashy, commercial Bollywood fare, but they are "art" directors and their work is seen by relatively few people. in fact, they are more respected by Western cinephiles than they are at home.

just because you don't like musicals? it's obviously not the only type of film that India produces, it just so happens to be the most popular. good for them. they found a niche that is successful and brings pride to their countrymen.

Others to check out:
Khabi Khabi - Classic 80's film not to be confused with the more recent Khabi Khushi Khabie Gham

Anything by Raj Kapoor, a film star from the 50s who drew heavily from Charley Chaplin. Shri 420 may be his most popular film and is indeed a good place to start. The songs from this film will stay with you for days. Awara is also a worth your time.
