"A Good Black Movie . . ."

Somebody help a sista out . . .

Please suggest some good black movies, I'm looking for ideas for a play and need some inspiration. The movies don't have to be classic like the Color Purple, but they should be good. Please don't suggest anything stupid like, The Wash or one of them CashMoney/No Limit bootleggin lookin movies.
If you don't know what I mean by good, here are some examples:
Crooklyn,The Color Purple,X,Bamboozled, Eve's Bayou, Slam, Disappearing Acts, Sarafina, Dead Presidents,Coming to America and The Women of Brewster Place,
Stupid Movies: Two Can Play That Game (not funny), I Got the Hook Up . . . you get the point.

I get a lot of ideas from old movies like Cornbread,Earl, and Me.
I'm asking yall because there are some good black movies that I'm not familar with.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone by asking for black movies, but I love my culture, and I love good black movies.
By the way I seen Sankofa in one of the black book stores in my area, has anyone seen it, is it good ?

Peace, Sista BlakStaar

I think that love and basketball is a good black movie. It's not nasty or anything and it's not talking about anyone killin any body else.

And Soul food is a good movie too!

But if we label this just picture what we might lose...that unexpected kiss that whole feeling that brought me to you

Daughters of the Dust was directed by Julie Dash. More info can be found on http://geechee.tv/vidtrial.html

Eve's Bayou was by Kasi Lemmons, who also directed The Caveman's Valentine.

Oh man you wathing this, she shakes her head smiles and her knowing how much of a water head I am (I cried the first time I saw Mufasa die in the lion king) says your gonna cry... and she was right I cried like a damn baby... This was such a great movie

Fresh- AMAZING incredibly slept on film with Samuel L. Jackson (in a bit part)

Clockers- in my opinion better than Boyz n tha Hood or Menace 2 society, and one of Spike's best films period.

The Wood- funny as hell. Brings me back to my jr. high days.

Mississippi Masala- more of an indian (specifically Gujuratis "transplanted" to Africa and then immigrated to Mississippi)slanted film, but deals with race relations between indians, blacks, and whites. Great film, with a really good Denzel Washington performance.

a better movie than Sankofa. And Coming To America would NOT qualify as a "Good Black Movie", because it played to a lot of stereotypes about Africans and African-Americans, which some may or may not find funny.

i'm not Black (i'm Filipino)... but i do enjoy films about fellow minorities...

i second the votes on the films already mentioned. and here are a few more that i liked:
- catfish in black bean sauce (bout a Black family that adopts a couple of Vietnamese refugees)
- to sir, with love (it's old..but can't go wrong with sidney poitier!)
- cry freedom (based on the life of steve biko)

that's all i can think of for now...
peace,
vette.

for musicals you cant beat:

the wiz,
school daze
stormy weather

general drama/comedy:

all of the sidney poitier/bill cosby movies (uptown saturday night, any which way but looses, etc.)

harlem nights
raw
live on sunset strip

oddly enough...Trippin with "Bud" was suprisingly good. good upper middle class, highschool immature sex romp

house party

will think of more later
