"let us now praise DAVE CHAPPELLE"
Sun Oct-20-02 11:03 PM

i gotta be quick.
me and okaystaff went to MSG to see
him and jim breuer perform.

man.

i suspect that this will be the comedy version of how y'all will recieve common's album.

motherfukcers would not shut the fuck up. every two seconds "SAMSON!" or "CHIP" or some other reference to his half baked past. i remember him telling me that he hates these cats. but man---i never knew that it would be this bad.

but it was a revelation. we had a bottle hurled at us in nawlins and riq stopped the show. dave was getting it everywhere.

FUCK AIDS IN AFRICA!
FUCK THOSE TOWELHEADS!
FUCK HILLARY CLINTON!
FUCK YOU NOT WANTING TO TALK ABOUT HALF BAKED!!!!

he handled that shit like a pro! i mean it--he was dropping so much knowledge that i knew aaron mcgruder was the paul mooney to his richard pryor. he was in they asses! and they wouldn't let up.

i compare it to common cause as long as he does what they want it's cool. but the second he grows away from that it's curtains.

he has frat boys
we have bagpackers.

and moneywise we are at the mercy of both. i just found it weird to see another genre in this whole situation.

Can it ever be that people just don't like it the stuff they heard recently? I think you artist hide behind this "growth" reasoning too much.

bullshit. if you don't like something, you don't like it. but that doesn't mean you have to come to the man's show and yell out references, or in Common's case, take to the internet and call him everytyhing but a child of God. it's bullshit.
for some reason, people think that stand up is an interactive experience. "they're professionals, it's part of the show." wrong.
shut your monkey ass up and let him do his thing. you wanna watch "Half Baked"? carry your ass to Blockbuster.
? i highly suggest you go see "Comedian".

this is true, but because people get what they pay for
people tend to act the fool as often as they can, in public.

typecasting happens across genres, too, because people don't see celebrities as "normal people." so they feel free to heckle, say silly shit to get attention, strip or do whatever. it depends on what kind of celebrity you are, too: dave c. is a fool, he's been that dude on screen before, the one screaming out insults and stuff. immature idiots will think he might actually respond to that at one of his shows.

it wouldn't happen to chris rock...some of that is the type of audience he attracts, the other part is the type of comedian he is.

hide?

so if it's cool with you then i speak the truth.
but if u disagree then im using this as a crutch?

i wasn't even talking about "i got the right ta" i mean in general. and your answer speaks it loud. if someone dosn't like it does that mean that com still dosnt have artistic vision? like it's not valid because you don't like it?

Sometimes good, sometimes bad.

Sometimes both.

And there's pretty ignorant behavior on both sides of the line.

You get the idiot fans who turn their back if they don't hear Resurrection II.

And you get idiot artists who try to blame their fans for not "keeping up."

I've always seen you respecting people for their opinions.

But I've also seen you villifying fans because they're trying to "cage" an artist -- when in reality they might just plain not feel it.

"Don't cage me" is as much of a knee-jerk reaction as "This doesn't sound like 'Watermelon'!!"

Which is what I assume the poster above was talking about.

personally, i don't really believe that most cats want artists to try new things. of course, there are exceptions...but how many people really want to take that time to see if they really dig an album? most people give an album quick previews. and if there isn't some song on there that reminds them of a previous hit, they dismiss it. then after the shit gets popular on b.e.t. or mtv (if that even happens)...they come back to it. most people can not decide for themselves what they really like. i haven't heard com's new joint, but i don't doubt that peeps will bitch.

"Rhythm is the architecture of being, the inner dynamic that gives it form, the pure expression of the life force. Rhythm is the vibratory shock, the force which, through our senses, grips us at the root of our being. It is expressed through corporeal and sensual means; through lines, surfaces, colors, and volumes in architecture, sculpture, or painting; through accents in poetry and music, through movements in the dance. But doing this, rhythm turn all these concrete things toward the light of the spirit. In the degree to which rhythm is sensuously embodied, it illuminates the spirit...Only rhythm gives the word its effective fullness; it is the word of God, that is, the rhythmic word, that created the world."
- from African Poet Leopold Senghor

i remember hearing dave on howard stern a few months back. howard was being his usual racist self. he was playing id's from one of his affiliate stations somewhere in the u.s. apparently it was an urban station. lots of rappers and r&b singers was shouting out the radio station and howard himself. common was one of em! common was like "yo this is common sense bla bla bla". that whore robin quivers goes "COMMON SENSE!?!?!?! is that his name?!??!!? HA HA HA HA HA HA HAHAHAHAHHAH AHAHA" any way dave chimes in "hey i actually have all of his records, common is a real good rapper." they didnt give a shit. they just thought his name was funny. dave likes common! guess they are having the same struggles.....

great re-enactment of the conversation btw. I didnt hear it but its just like every other conversation between him and Robin, Howard and his ingorant ass talking about something he hasnt heard of, then Robin cackling on lol

Dave and Jim Bruer were supposed to have their own sitcom in the mid-late 90's. I saw a commericial for it on ABC and waited but I don't remember seeing any kind of pilot for it.

Of course, there will always be somebody out there yellin' "Women be shoppiiiiiin! Women be shoppin'!"

Was Dave also on Uptown comedy club or was that just Jim Bruer? And what was the name of that Italian guy that always won the snaps game?

i've seen dave in lots of small comedy clubs back in the day before half-baked, and he was funny as hell! always been a supporter. i'm glad he's doin his thing. plus, i think he's holding the torch for black comedians. eddie murphy-ain't funny no more. chris rock-well, i don't know. i've seen him on tv and seen some of his movies-doesn't even make me crack a smile. i mean, you got cedric and them, but sometimes their shit just seems so watered down on tv. we'll see how dave's show is, but it's on comedy central, right?

>he has frat boys
>we have bagpackers.
>and moneywise we are at the mercy of both.

$$$ - 'cause if anyone remembers hip-hop prior to mainstream acceptance, fewer artists (than today) were makin' enough ducats to pay the bills.

And the scathing indictment of movement outside of the tried and true has parallels and a prior precedent in jazz. When restless jazz musicians moved into bop, it was the traditionalist audience that initially spoke ill of it and tried to maintain big band. When jazz artists (such as Miles) headed into fusion, where did the derision come from? The swear-by-bop audience had failed to keep up with these acts (who felt constrained by bop and wanted to explore other sonic textures). It's happening today with hip-hop - backpackers are dictating where the music should be as opposed to the core community that was responsible for its inception in the 1st place. The problem is that these same backpackers think nothing twice of opening their wallets and parting with their $, thereby sustaining the livelihood of these acts... It's a conundrum for sure.

Last example - in South African black townships, electronic rhythm-driven Kwaito has displaced hip-hop in the hearts of many - but inflexible heads speak of Kwaito in the lowliest of terms. Where and when indeed did the powers that be confer this ability to judge on these so-called heads???

Dave was appearing on a bill with Jim Breuer. They costarred in a cult classic together, and potheads still worship that flick. I mean, how would you feel if Cheech and Chong had a concert and Cheech just refused to do any jokes about weed? If Chapelle wants to avoid these crowds, he shouldn't be performing on the same bill as his co-star. Jim Breuer brings that frat-boy crowd, because that's all he talks about in his standup. Dave Chapelle is way more talented, and has some brilliant material, much of which would be wasted on the frat demographic. And, I'm not convinced he depends on these kind of gigs to pay the bills - he seems to get steady work in films, and I know he's headlined his own stand-up tours before. I say Dave Chapelle made a poor choice by signing on to this concert. Sure, its Madison Square Garden, but is it worth it when you have to attach yourself to this "Half-Baked-reunion" type of show? He can stand on his own as a comedian, and he should. He's funny as hell.

peace,
murph

Jim Bruer is an idiot. A hack. And he has a huge following of idiots. The kind who go "whooo!" when they hear the word "bong."

Dave Chapelle, OTOH, is one of the top standups going right now, black or white. He's not above doing a weed joke, but his act is very smart and very funny.

So... I dunno. Next time see him with David Cross or something.

Cheech and Chong made their career doing jokes about weed. Dave Chapelle did one movie about pot. that pales in comparison to the years that he spent perfecting his craft. he was probably assuming that the audience would be smart enough to figure out that he wasn't the same person he played in a movie. obviously, he was wrong.

of course he can stand on his own. he's a nationally recognized headliner. it's not about that. it's about working with a friend and exposing yourself to a slightly different audience. the Roots didn't have to go on tour with Moby and Outkast, but they did.

i agree with y'all, however i'd like to add that i have seen Dave do plenty of bits on the topic of weed that were completely seperate and unrelated to Half-baked. also the person who mentioned seeing him with David Cross next time. David Cross has a great bit about weed too that he does. Anyway, it sucks that fools didn't give him love. he is one of my favorite comedians currently at large.

man, now i wanna see him live....

I'm just saying. Jim Bruer has defined his career in only two ways.

A) Weed.
B) He can bray like a goat.

That's it. That's all he does. So people who are fans of him are people who like that. That's who's going to be at that show.

The Roots on a bill with Moby or Outkast makes a lot of sense. If they chose to open for Limp Bizkit, they'd get what they deserve from the audience. If you associate with talented artists who have an "intelligent" fan base, you have a shot at reaching that broader audience. Otherwise you're just opening yourself up for heckling.

As for the intelligence of the audience at MSG, I agree with your assessment. I can't imagine being disappointed by a Dave Chapelle stand-up routine. But to these knuckleheads, he was just Cheech.

peace,
murph

i saw dave in richmond, va a little over a month ago. sounds like you went through the same shit i did; for about 45 minutes people kept yelling out requests, comments, and just random dumb shit. every time he tried to start on a new joke they would kill it by trying to get dave's attention. if chappelle wasn't so damn funny regardless, it wouldve been a waste of 30 bucks.

that's what happens when you sell alchohol at non-music events. same shit happened when i saw carlin.
