Oh dear God. I got this last night at Wal Mart (my old standby, Tower, screwed up and only had the $75 Gift set and the VHS versions) and stayed up till 4 a.m. watching this. It is almost like a completely different movie and it is just as wonderful. I need to watch it again to digest it all, but suffice it to say that it is more than worth the $30 for the DVD set. The added scenes make the movie much broader in scope, more humorous and yes, even more serious. All in all, this epic is now even more epic--if such a thing were possible.

it has a whole bunch of crap like book ends, an extra dvd about the making of lotr, and some other fancy schmancy bull crap art statues and stuff. Some people are even knocking it down to 59.99 or 55.00 dollars.

That scene alone would make the extended DVD worth the money. Legolas is the man. My sister just bought it yesterday so I'm going to borrow it from her this weekend.

I'll never understand why they decided not to have the scene where Galadriel gives them the gifts, especially if Frodo uses the light thingy in the next movies. At least they got in this extended version. Gotta pick that joint up though.

If I remember correctly the theatrical version did have Frodo receiving his gift. I just don't understand why they left out the others especially because Sam gets that rope and it's mentioned a few times in the book. The other gifts aren't really that necessary to see.

If your mom loves then yeah you might as well cop it. The story is really expanded. There is alot of character development. I haven't watch the documentaries yet but I did listen to one of the commentaries and it was pretty interesting so if you mom likes stuff like that then she would probably want this version.

I haven't decided what I'm gonna do with the original version. I had to have the original when it came out because that's the kind of uber-geek I am. Now that I have THE DVD, I will probably keep it...of course, I should see what CD Warehouse will give me for it first...

I haven't even watched the extended version yet, but I have watched most of the documentary features. The process behind making this film is just fascinating. I especially appreciate the way they relied heavily on the two Tolkien illustrators they hired to inspire their artistic design. The amount of work they put into making the props and sets was insane. And the fact that so much of the film is done with miniatures - I had no idea that's how they did some of those shots. Plus I liked how they demystified some of the Hobbit size-ratio tricks they used. I paid 25 bucks at Best Buy, and I'm positive it was worth the money. This is a movie I am very glad to own.

I have only watched the first disc so far (ends with the council of Elrond), and I was very familiar with what I had seen in the theater (saw it twice). So I was able to 'know' where the extended scenes and 'new' scenes were parsed in.
Some areas where just little things, but man it makes the story even stronger. I especially liked the scene where the elves are on their journey to the grey havens. Between the imaging of the elves, and their singing really made it mythical.
I'll have more when I view the rest...

And they filled in a lot of areas. A lot of folks who read the books wanted to know why they didn't show 'the gifts of Galadriel'? I'm happy to report they restored the full scene, with everyone receiving their gifts.
A fair amount of added footage on the 2nd disc is mainly during the Lothlorien stay. Re-inserted the beginning part when they run into the Lorien elves in the forest...and the subsequent delay of the party's entry due to the 'evil' that they bring, and the elves unwillingness to allow them shelter (A good long scene with Aragorn pleading their case).
They also added the scene when they come out of the surrounding woods to caras ghalodon(sp?), which is the GIANT tree that you see the group walking up into during the theatrical release (they show the tree from afar...magnificent).
And of course, the scene with the gifts. They also flesh out more of Aragorn's character and his 'true' purpose in this tale (a lot of it fleshed out by galadriel) which is to restore the throne of Gondor and become king, and his reluctance to accept his calling (there is another seen after they leave Lorien, with Aragorn and Boromir concerning Aragorn's purpose as well).
Now on to discs 3 and 4 (the supplemental stuff)
