"Best DVDs to show off sound system?"
Mon Nov-25-02 12:47 AM

Usually it's an action movie. Saving Private Ryan. T2. Apocalypse Now/Redux.

But for me, hands down it's now the 6-DVD set. I'm only to part 5, but part 2 (on disc 1) might be the best sound editing I've ever heard.

I wasn't too sure about picking this one up until I found it for $48 (list $120). (The price has gone up to $56.85 , but that's still , considering everywhere else has it for $35-$40 more than that.)

Anyways... what are your favorite DVDs to show off your sound system?

i still haven't seen that movie

that said, obviously michael bay's films are worthy. (the director's cut of 'pearl harbor' comes to mind - with around 40 minutes of additional footage added in... if you can sit through that romance haha.)

for such a bare-boned dvd otherwise (the fifth element was one of the first dvd releases out there and besson's been busy so there's been no special edition re-release), you're correct. the 5th element is one of the dvds that gets played once every couple of months...

a lot of bruce's films get replay.

the comes to mind... (3 films, 6 dvds, only $38.74 after $10 coupon.)

yeah, the die hard set is so good as a reference, i've bought it 3 times. once on laserdisc. again when the 3-dvd set was originally released on dvd (fox's first dvds were non-anamorphic, and it didn't look like they were going to ever release 16x9 discs, much less special editions like what's now available on the die hard ultimate collection), and then i sold that first 3-dvd set and bought the 6-dvd ultimate collection. (mostly for the new 16x9 transfers, still haven't watched any of the bonus material.)

luckily i was able to sell the laserdiscs on ebay before folks realized dvds were going to catch on... (with all of the studios)

I can only imagine how it'll sound on a real setup.

Now THIS is the kind of DVD posts I like!

GLADIATOR (dts-ES) - The best DVD sound out now! From the crisp quiet sounds of wind as Maximus touches the grass, to the powerful battle scenes in the stadiums, this DVD is fantastic! With two rear speakers and two surrounds, you are REALLY surrounded in this film. The crowd is just fantastic! Now I don't have a 7.1 setup just yet, but rumor has it Santa's gonna bring me one.

Wile these other titles are good, everything else in my opinion pales in comparison...

STAR WARS: PHANTOM MENACE (DD-EX)
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (DD)
SE7EN (dts-ES) {this movie excels in the quiet moments...rain, footsteps, background noise, chatter)
MATRIX (DD)
FIGHT CLUB (DD)

I've been surviving since '97 w/o a subwoofer.

But that's why I put "Unbreakable" on my list. I watched it on my ol' man's system (his powered subwoofer is the size of a small coffee table...DAMN) and was convined I needed one. The beginning of that movie is on the train, and while Bruce Willis and the girl are talking, you can feel the bumps in the train on the ground. That's THE GROUND OF YOUR HOUSE! I was amazed! Plus, I realize that with a subwoofer, your front speakers are allowed to perform that much better.

I mean, it'll come eventually. I just think the two surrounds are more important now. Go figure.

god, what a great 10 part series that was.

amen.

on a completely unrelated note, which has nothing to do with sound, i've now made it my mission to get cannonball run DVD. a terrible release, but an excellent film.

not sure if you're joking or not, but you can grab it for only $11.41.
grab another dvd & use the coupons for more savings.

however, an even better deal is for $11.98. then use to knock it down to less. (a better deal if you're only buying one dvd.)

Not sure if anyone know the difference between Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 and 6.1

Obviously, you get an extra channel with DTS (if you have the hardwarde to support it) But the overall DTS feed is 5 times better than Dolby Digital. Plus some DVD's (mostly Dreamworks/Universal)have a DTS intro/soundcheck that plays before the movie (the exact same intro that you see in the movie theater) I make it my duty to buy DVD's in DTS surround sound. ---note if your receiver is not DTS ready you wont hear anything--

SOME OF MY FAVORITE DTS SURROUND MOVIES:

TITAN A.E.
THE MUMMY
BONES
PITCH BLACK
