"LIST WILL BE POSTED AT MIDNIGHT, VOTING IS OVER"
Sat Feb-23-08 10:55 PM by Frank Longo

If you wanna take part in a very interesting community list/debate, pleeeeease take part. I know there are more regular PTPers than this... if you've got the time, roll on through and pick em out.

****** ORIGINAL POST *******

Here's the deal. You think the Academy is bound to get it wrong. They always do. Well, now it's our turn.

I want you to post up your 5 favorites in eight major categories-- Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Screenplay.

I would also like you to rank these from best to worst-- 5 points for your favorite, 1 point for your 5th favorite. If you don't have 5 you enjoyed in a category, rank the ones you did find praiseworthy (example: Best Actress isn't the deepest field, so if you have only three performances you dug, give out 5, 4, and 3 points to those three).

I realize many of us live in cities that get limited release films much later, so you have up until a month from today (that's February 20th) to post your official selections. I will then add up the votes, The official PTP Oscar winners will be announced the day before the actual Oscars, so that we can brag the next day about how much better our list is.

Finally, if someone has a great idea about what the PTP Oscars should be named, throw that up too.

Let's see them lists, people. Choose em, rank em, throw em up.

Or is that too many abbreviations / acronyms?

Anyway, cool idea.

And here are some Oscar-buzzed films that come out before the deadline of 02/20:

The Assassination of Jesse James: 02/05
Gone Baby Gone: 02/12
Into the Wild: 02/12
American Gangster: 02/19
Michael Clayton: 02/19

In addition, 3:10 To Yuma, Away From Her, Eastern Promises, Knocked Up, La Vie en Rose, A Mighty Heart, Ratatouille, and Zodiac are already available.

I'd like to make a couple of changes here. Finally saw La Vie En Rose and can't deny Marion Cotillard.

So, I'd like to reorder my list for Best Actress to read as follows:

Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days) - 5
Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose) - 4
Laura Linney (The Savages) - 3
Carice Van Houten (Black Book) - 2
Molly Shannon (Year Of The Dog) / Kim Jiseon (In Between Days) - 1 (tie)

Regarding movies like Chop Shop, The Pool, Syndromes And A Century, In Between Days, etc., how do you first hear about and then see most of these? I ask because previously, and naively, I thought I had a good sense about the "notable" films of the year. Now, reading your respective nomination lists, I see cleary I did not (which is also a reason this post is proving helpful). Anyway, do you all attend festivals or what's the deal?

thanks again

For Chop Shop and Syndromes, I saw their previous work(s). Plus, along w/ The Pool and In Between Days, I see them in entries over at the indispensable:

http://daily.greencine.com/ (I'm certain I've mentioned this twice in the past few months)

Going off your previous top 20 list that I asked you about, I'd say you were on top of things on the more known American scene. You caught some stuff I haven't.

>Anyway, do you all attend festivals
>or what's the deal?

I do, but only local ones.

Even if one doesn't go to festivals, one'd be more than caught up w/ just the Greencine blog alone.

They cover the big, small, and everything-in-between festivals. The editors grab up either professional or non-pro reviews, articles, festival journal entries/dispatches, and notable blog entries.

Here's some coverage on some of the Sundance films you have an eye on:

http://daily.greencine.com/archives/005368.html#more
http://daily.greencine.com/archives/005363.html#more
http://daily.greencine.com/archives/005373.html#more

Then at the end of festivals, they'll make a movie index entry. Berlinale, SXSW, SF Asian American Film Festival, Toronto, Rotterdam, Pusan, and smaller and smaller fests. Lots of the flicks pop up more than once.

The blog also covers movies that may just be in a festival or 2, but have little runs here and there.

The entries on various film programs like the recent contempo Latin American film at Lincoln Center help just as much.

Links to Hoberman, Rosenbaum, King Friday...
King Friday got linked twice:
http://daily.greencine.com/archives/004888.html
http://daily.greencine.com/archives/004055.html

The blog entries are more than sufficient, but the links column on that blog is icing on the cake. Many of the linked sites have sections that do similar stuff like festival reports and reviews.

Magazines (some have their own websites) are still good for keeping up w/ what you should look out for:

Cinemascope http://www.cinema-scope.com/cs33/contents.htm
Film Comment http://www.filmlinc.com/fcm/jf08/terraincognita.htm
Filmmaker Magazine http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/

Other clearinghouse blogs like Greencine and Indiewire:

Movie City News
Movie City Indie

Yeah, this looks familiar, so you must have linked it before. Call it stubborness (loyalty to Netflix and to the Hollywood-Elsewhere blog), but I guess I didn't really give it enough of a looking over previously. I'm not too keen on Arthur Penn tributes, but there's a lot there going on that I have no clue about, so it should help fill in those gaps.

*bookmarked*

Are they good mostly for Sundance-related information? I get the indie in the web title, but that might be a little too speciality for my interests. Green Cine's a go though.

>Going off your previous top 20 list that I asked you about,

I've expanded, some. ha . . . I got a list of 44 titles, with a bit more diversity, including Once and This Is England in the top ten (thank you and Yogaflame very, very much for that recommendation).

Thanks. I had periodically been doing google blog / news searches for some titles.

I hear about films that usually don't garner a lot of attention through the usual sources - magazines, websites, etc.

Also, I used to work in International Distribution and made a load of great contacts who'll often funnel me tips whenever something interesting is showing in my area.

I end up seeing a lot of below-the-radar stuff simply because I have the good fortune of living in a city like Toronto. I'll routinely check out Cinematheque Ontario, rep houses, industry events, and any one of the millions of festivals that annually blow through town.

Consulates have always proven to show the latest and greatest from their respective nations. I don't know how it works in other cities, but our Italian Consulate opens their doors to monthly screenings. Goethe Institute, Taras Schevchenko Foundation and JapanCAN are also excellent venues for foreign films.

Certain ethnic pockets of Toronto will have MULTIPLEXES devoted entirely to showing films from that neighborhood's homeland. For instance, Woodside Cinema shows first-run Bollywood and Tamil fare and packs the house every weekend.

The Pool was very difficult to get my hands on. Luckily, someone I knew was able to shoot me a screener.

In Between Days I saw take shape from script to screen, as I'm friends with the producers.

I would parrot all of what Sponge mentioned in his post too.

I think you've mentioned before your pride towards Toronto as one of the most culturally plugged-in cities in North America, and I guess you weren't lying. The strong emphasis on and relevance of all the "ethnic pockets" is probably something you see in only a handful or so remaining big cities.

I can't even find any info on The Pool outside an 07 Sundance debut. Is it an offical 2007 release? . . . Same with Chop Shop. Did it actually get a non-festival 07 release? IMDB lists a February 27 (this month) date.

Yup. I feel terrible that it's more than likely not going to make my Best Pic list, but I'm pretty sure Ferguson is in for my Best Director list.

Kaye's Lake of Fire is coming out on DVD on 3/11. I'm thinking it has the potential to take the place of No End in Sight should a documentary make my Best Pic list.

Edit: Another one that can give NEIS a run is Adam Curtis' The Trap (can be found on Google Video).

For others' consideration in terms of documentaries: Manufactured Landscapes, The Bridge, and Into Great Silence.

Here are my picks. The ones with stars next to them are dark horse picks...the nominations are in several hours, and these performances and films could slip in and take a spot given their buzz or star power , i.e. Margot At The Wedding was savaged by critics, but Kidman gave a ridicilously on point, severely comic turn as Margot. And, Noam Baumbach wrote and directed a, for the most part, a very good film (I loved the movie, even if it disturbed me in some places)

>**Best Picture**
>There Will Be Blood - 5
>The Assassination of Jesse James - 4
>Zodiac - 3
>Still Life - 2
>No Country For Old Men - 1

See, this was incredibly difficult for me - not including Jesse James in my top five. The Pool and Chop Shop stayed with me all year; I couldn't shake it.

Still Life, I'm embarrassed to say, I haven't seen yet.

>**Best Actor**
>Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood) - 5
>Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises) - 4
>Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men) - 3
>George Clooney (Michael Clayton) - 2
>Thomas Turgoose (This Is England) - 1

I'm in the minority that thinks Mortensen's portrayal, while fantastic, was made all the less special by just how 2-D that character (and the film) was conceived.

Kudos for the Turgoose mention. It's fucking insane how good he is in this.

**Best Actress**
>Julie Christie (Away From Her) - 5
>Isabelle Huppert (Private Property) - 4
>Carice van Houten (Black Book) - 3
>Keri Russell (Waitress) - 2
>Kim Jiseon (In Between Days) - 1

Julie Christie is nothing compared to the brilliance of Pinsent in Polley's otherwise MOW-style adaptation of a perfectly-rendered short story.

Van Houten is stunning in Black Book. I'm shocked more hasn't been made of her work.

How much am I hating myself for completely forgetting In Between Days? Easily one of my favorite films of the past few years and here I don't even remember to include it in my year-end? Shameful. Oh, and Jiseon is perfect in this.

>**Best Supporting Actor **
>Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) - 5
>Kevin J. O'Connor (There Will Be Blood) - 4
>Casey Affleck (The Assassination of Jesse James) - 3
>Philip Bosco (The Savages) - 2
>Mark Ruffalo (Zodiac) - 1

My list easily could've included Dano, O'Connor, Affleck and Ruffalo. One of the strongest years for BSA in recent memory.

>**Best Supporting Actress**
>Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) - 5
>Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) - 4
>Kelly Macdonald (No Country For Old Men) - 3
>Adrienne Shelly (Waitress) - 2
>Judy Greer (The TV Set) - 1

Was Waitress that good? It looks terrible!

Love Judy Greer, but haven't seen The TV Set. Usually hate pics about the industry, but might give it a chance.

>See, this was incredibly difficult for me

Tell me about it. It pains me to have to leave off Syndromes and a Century, Hana, Old Joy, In Between Days, Knocked Up, The Golden Door. Pick any 5 and that's a solid one in my eyes for any year, but this one. The Bourne Ultimatum is just getting unfairly buried.

>The Pool and Chop Shop stayed with
>me all year; I couldn't shake it.

Hope I get to see these. Read great things about the former. Couldn't sleep after seeing Man Push Cart; if that's in the same neighborhood as Chop Shop, man, I'm in for something.

>Still Life, I'm embarrassed to say, I haven't seen yet.

Heft. Probably the only thing Platform has over it is some humor.

>I'm in the minority that thinks Mortensen's portrayal, while
>fantastic, was made all the less special by just how 2-D that
>character (and the film) was conceived.

Yea, overall, it felt like Part 1 of a 3-part tv movie (w/ high production values). The character shortcomings couldn't dampen my appreciation of Mortenson's accomplishment, though. Never came across as mannered.

>Kudos for the Turgoose mention.

Likewise.

>It's fucking insane how good
>he is in this.

Scary good. One of the most impressive performances by a teen I've seen. Any other year, Stephen Graham would get a nod, too.

>Julie Christie is nothing compared to the brilliance of
>Pinsent

I'm w/ ya. Confession: The first time I saw the flick, my eyes and attention always gravitated toward Pinsent in their scenes together. Didn't think much of Christie's performance at first. Not until a 2nd watch, did she impress me.

But, man, I couldn't knock any of the lead actors off my list and I feel awful.

>in Polley's otherwise MOW-style adaptation of a
>perfectly-rendered short story.

Yea, I think the praise for her direction was unwarranted. Tracking shot circling around the couple? Seriously? I mean unless it mirrored a descriptive passage in the source material...

>Van Houten is stunning in Black Book. I'm shocked more hasn't
>been made of her work.

She owned the hell out of her role. Usually things that good eventually get noticed, but that's not the case so far.

>How much am I hating myself for completely forgetting In
>Between Days? Easily one of my favorite films of the past few
>years and here I don't even remember to include it in my
>year-end? Shameful. Oh, and Jiseon is perfect in this.

The movie gets ya in your guts. I wasn't surprised to learn that Kim had a Dardenne brothers and Jia movie in mind. And, she has a little bit of a Kore-eda and Tarvkovsky in mind for her next one!

>My list easily could've included Dano, O'Connor, Affleck and
>Ruffalo.

As mine could've had Downey Jr., PSH, and TLJ.

It's shitty that I couldn't give John Carroll Lynch a nod.

>Was Waitress that good? It looks terrible!

Haha. Nah, I was only impressed by Russell and Shelly's acting. The movie, as a whole, is average. Bad in some parts, pretty good in others.

>Love Judy Greer, but haven't seen The TV Set. Usually hate
>pics about the industry, but might give it a chance.

I thought Duchovny was good, too. Greer just cracked me up each time she spoke. As for the movie, it's decent at best, like, not a bad thing to watch when you're down w/ a cold or something and nothing good is on.

I guess the big negatives was most of the stuff cracking on the industry, suits, audience, and marketing wasn't funny. However, the cracks on tv production were pretty good. About 2 or 3 really exceptional scenes in terms of laughs and performance.

It's pretty good. Couldn't really see anything wrong with the swipes at the suits. Weaver is solid too.

And luckily you can update your list whenever, thanks to our unlimited editing capabilities! Mod high five!

I'm seeing Into the Wild, Diving Bell, AND I'm Not There tomorrow. All three leave my local theaters on Friday, so I'm driving to three different theatres to see these flicks. It's a mini-Columbus Film Festival!

Picture:
No Country For Old Men
There Will be Blood
Assassination of Jesse James
Black Book
4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days

Actor: Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Before the Devil Knows Your Dead.
Casey Affleck in Jesse James

Supporting Actor: Michael Shannon in Before the Devil... and Ion Sapdaru in 4 Months... Both of them scared the shit out of me. Can't wait to see more of them (Shannon is great in Bug too).

Hal Holbrook is really, really incredible too.

37. "There should be a Best Cinematography category"
In response to Reply # 0

I know it's late to suggest this, but hear me out.

If the people who already posted their ballots as of today don't end up posting their nominations for Best Cinematography by the deadline, then we can just throw this added category out.

Or, we can just declare the winner w/ those nominations posted from today up to the deadline. (If only 2 or 3 people post nominations, then I guess we can throw it out then, too.)

I realize this opens up people saying, well, since we added a cinematography one, we gotta add editing and sound design. However, I think cinematography is the most glaring omission. We're talking about movies, ya know.

My 2 cents.

>Lake of Fire

I'm kind of scared to watch it. There's some scenes in there that's difficult for me to think about seeing.

>Things We Lost in the Fire

Benicio won some praise for his work here. I'm seeing it strictly for him.

>BEST DIRECTOR
>2 points - Shane Meadows (This Is England)

Difficult movie to direct. Lots of thin-lines. Personal connection to the content. Nice choice.

>BEST ACTOR
>4 points - Brad Pitt (The Assassination of Jesse James)

Amazing work in the "picture" scene. Definitely one of the finest acting moments this year. So is the trading stories scene w/ Charley.

Overlooked and underrated performance for sure.

in the Supporting category b/c that's their Oscar noms? I did in my 1st ballot.

However, I do think they're both leading roles (Robert Ford; Chigurh) so in my final ballot I'm gonna have both of them in the Leading category. Is that a no-no? 'Cause it's gonna mess up a comparison b/w PTP's winners and the Academy's?

for whom the voter didn't specify for what movie?

Like some lists just got PSH, Affleck, and TLJ w/o naming the movie. Is it Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Charlie Wilson's War, or The Savages for PSH? AOJJ or Gone Baby Gone for Affleck? In the Valley of Elah or NCFOM for TLJ?

Considering how criterias for lead and supporting differ, it's kind of hard, from my vantage point, to use that as a hint.

for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor anyway.

Not sure if it matters on the actress side. I *think* there were some Linneys and Blanchetts w/o the mention of for what movie. Most likely, it's for The Savages and not Jindabyne or Breach for Linney. Kinda harder for Blanchett.

Did Sam Rockwell crack your top 10?

Yeah, Linney had a nice year. Cooper was great in Breach, too.

>BEST ACTOR:
>Vincenzo Amato (The Golden Door) - 4

Fuck. Forgot about him. Shit, I thought I was thorough this time around writing it down. He was a standout from an impressive cast. (Didn't like Gainsbourg, though.) He gave lots of my favorite nonverbal acting moments this year. Absolutely loved the scene where the men are singing on the ship. How he played those Ellis Island scene tests were masterful.

>BEST ACTRESS:
>
>Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days) - 5

I'm getting worried that this isn't coming my way. There's been as long as a 2-month delay for limited releases here, but I'm not so confident in regards to this one.

>Molly Shannon (Year Of The Dog)

She's stellar in it.

>BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
>Aurora Quattrocchi (The Golden Door)

I feel shitty that I put her in at #9.

Great stuff. Off the top, they'd make my top 5.

The Quays are crazy masterful.

>Persepolis (dirs. Vincent Paronnaud & Marjane Satrapi) - 3

Amato gives a classic performance here. He was fantastic.

Marinca gives one of the best female performances I've seen in years.

After revising my ballot, I realized how off-base Longo's line about the Best Actress category not being the deepest really was. This was an outstanding year for everyone.

Have you seen Madonnen yet?

Good move listing Red Road. Missed my ballot by a pube.

I hope people don't think I'm trying to be colorful here adding Molly Shannon, but she was so fucking in control of that role it was scary.

Quattrocchi - amazing. In fact, almost everything about The Golden Door was amazing. Loved Respiro and loved this. Crialese could turn out to be a giant.

Man, Jessica Yu may just be the most underrated documentarian alive. Protagonist was chilling.

Terror's Advocate is getting lost in the shuffle. I hope more people see it.

Have you ever seen the Quays' videos for His Name Is Alive? Great stuff.

As leaden and played-out as anything Eye Of The Tiger is these days (the joke's a little old, no?) it worked here. Really well.

Shit. That's not helping my horrible feeling that I'm missing out.

>After revising my ballot, I realized how off-base Longo's line

Yea, man. Like, Cotillard is mindblowing and there're other performances that one can say is as impressive.

>Have you seen Madonnen yet?

No, but can't wait to see it. I'd be surprised if it gets a theatrical release here. Huller was awesomely terrifying in Requiem. Heard great things about Maria Speth, too.

>I hope people don't think I'm trying to be colorful here
>adding Molly Shannon, but she was so fucking in control of
>that role it was scary.

Absolutley. Her crying (after the vet and her monologue to Sarsgaard's character) was as genuine and moving as von Sydow in TDBATB. She has some dramatic chops.

>Quattrocchi - amazing. In fact, almost everything about The
>Golden Door was amazing. Loved Respiro and loved this.
>Crialese could turn out to be a giant.

One of us (you, genius.switch, or any other fans of it) should make a post of this movie to get people to watch it. Like, mention Scorsese Presents and loves it just in case first-rate script, acting, directing, and cinematography isn't enough. What's not to like? *Edits Subject Line*

>Man, Jessica Yu may just be the most underrated documentarian
>alive. Protagonist was chilling.

Agreed. In the Realms of the Unreal is right up PTP's alley, I think. The people in Protagonist are more fascinating than those in The King of Kong which I loved, too. There may not be the pop sensibility, but...

Did you see Honigmann's Forever? I was sick then and feel sick now that I missed screenings. Didn't want to be those people coughing non-stop during a movie.

>Terror's Advocate is getting lost in the shuffle. I hope more
>people see it.

I'm kind of surprised by some of the lukewarm and negative reviews. Regardless, it's essential viewing, hands down.

>Have you ever seen the Quays' videos for His Name Is Alive?
>Great stuff.

I've only seen Still Married and Can't Go Wrong Without You. (Did they do more?) Both are just behind Street of Crocodiles and right up there w/ The Comb and Rehearsals for Extinct Anatomies, in my book.

BTW, read somewhere that Norstein has been getting proposals for financing The Overcoat, but he's turned them down (I think including Studio Ghibli) b/c he wants to work at home. Don't know why the possible financers need him to work abroad. Damn.

>As leaden and played-out as anything Eye Of The Tiger is these
>days (the joke's a little old, no?) it worked here. Really
>well.

I liked it, but the rest of the theatre was dead. Can't say I loved the movie through and through. Ratatouille was a perfect film, but the content of Persepolis was the difference elevating it to the 5 spot.

Did you catch either Secret Sunshine or Still Light at TIFF? Didn't like Reygadas' previous efforts.

Re: 4M3W2D, you are definitely missing out.

Requiem, imo, is one of the best movies of the 2000s. It would definitely rate in my top fifty, if not my top twenty.

Year Of The Dog was a little too slight for me when all put together, but Shannon was just perfect.

You know I'm not gonna make that Golden Door post, but I'll say it right here - THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL MOVIE.

Crialese is fast becoming one of my favorites.

I also just read that Amato is now completely NY-based. He's got a side career as an iron sculptor.

Check out his stuff at vincenzoamato.com.

Amato reminds me of some strange mix of Giannini and William Holden. He's a totally honest and physical talent. I hope he does more.

I'd really like to see Yu make a dramatic feature. For some reason when I finished watching Little Children, I immediately wondered what it what would have been like in her hands. Is that strange?

I hadn't even heard of Forever until just now. After some Googling, it sounds a bit like Jonas Mekas' As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses Of Beauty, but a lot more stylized.

Terror's Advocate aside, I'm really baffled by Schroeder's career. He's made some of the best, but isn't considered one of the best. His cameo in The Darjeeling Limited was great.

When the fuck are the stars gonna align for Norstein?

Yeah, I really think Ratatouille was the better pic. It is a flawless, magical film.

Didn't catch Secret Sunshine or Silent Light, but can't wait to see them both. A friend saw Silent Light and said it was difficult as hell. I dunno. To me, it looks near-perfect. I'm a pretty big fan of Reygadas, but can easily see how someone could be put off by him.

What don't you like about his other stuff?

Also, did you see August Evening? Wow. Pretty damn great.

In the Best Supporting Actor category, I'd like to have Mark Ruffalo's performance in Zodiac tie with Philip Bosco at 1.

Plus there's four or five films that I'd probably add performances from had I gotten around to seeing them.

But I'm mad appreciative of you folks who can remember what you saw and what you loved.
