>See, this was incredibly difficult for me
Tell me about it. It pains me to have to leave off Syndromes and a Century, Hana, Old Joy, In Between Days, Knocked Up, The Golden Door. Pick any 5 and that's a solid one in my eyes for any year, but this one. The Bourne Ultimatum is just getting unfairly buried.
>The Pool and Chop Shop stayed with >me all year; I couldn't shake it.
Hope I get to see these. Read great things about the former. Couldn't sleep after seeing Man Push Cart; if that's in the same neighborhood as Chop Shop, man, I'm in for something.
>Still Life, I'm embarrassed to say, I haven't seen yet.
Heft. Probably the only thing Platform has over it is some humor.
>I'm in the minority that thinks Mortensen's portrayal, while >fantastic, was made all the less special by just how 2-D that >character (and the film) was conceived.
Yea, overall, it felt like Part 1 of a 3-part tv movie (w/ high production values). The character shortcomings couldn't dampen my appreciation of Mortenson's accomplishment, though. Never came across as mannered.
>Kudos for the Turgoose mention.
Likewise.
>It's fucking insane how good >he is in this.
Scary good. One of the most impressive performances by a teen I've seen. Any other year, Stephen Graham would get a nod, too.
>Julie Christie is nothing compared to the brilliance of >Pinsent
I'm w/ ya. Confession: The first time I saw the flick, my eyes and attention always gravitated toward Pinsent in their scenes together. Didn't think much of Christie's performance at first. Not until a 2nd watch, did she impress me.
But, man, I couldn't knock any of the lead actors off my list and I feel awful.
>in Polley's otherwise MOW-style adaptation of a >perfectly-rendered short story.
Yea, I think the praise for her direction was unwarranted. Tracking shot circling around the couple? Seriously? I mean unless it mirrored a descriptive passage in the source material...
>Van Houten is stunning in Black Book. I'm shocked more hasn't >been made of her work.
She owned the hell out of her role. Usually things that good eventually get noticed, but that's not the case so far.
>How much am I hating myself for completely forgetting In >Between Days? Easily one of my favorite films of the past few >years and here I don't even remember to include it in my >year-end? Shameful. Oh, and Jiseon is perfect in this.
The movie gets ya in your guts. I wasn't surprised to learn that Kim had a Dardenne brothers and Jia movie in mind. And, she has a little bit of a Kore-eda and Tarvkovsky in mind for her next one!
>My list easily could've included Dano, O'Connor, Affleck and >Ruffalo.
As mine could've had Downey Jr., PSH, and TLJ.
It's shitty that I couldn't give John Carroll Lynch a nod.
>Was Waitress that good? It looks terrible!
Haha. Nah, I was only impressed by Russell and Shelly's acting. The movie, as a whole, is average. Bad in some parts, pretty good in others.
>Love Judy Greer, but haven't seen The TV Set. Usually hate >pics about the industry, but might give it a chance.
I thought Duchovny was good, too. Greer just cracked me up each time she spoke. As for the movie, it's decent at best, like, not a bad thing to watch when you're down w/ a cold or something and nothing good is on.
I guess the big negatives was most of the stuff cracking on the industry, suits, audience, and marketing wasn't funny. However, the cracks on tv production were pretty good. About 2 or 3 really exceptional scenes in terms of laughs and performance.
