"Music from a TV Show or Movie that drew you in"

Recently it's been Homeland and Misfits before that

When I was younger I would watch the pink panther movies for the music.

Homeland though is pretty striking because its mostly silent and then the dramatic use of Cohen or miles or the opener/closing its pretty haunting

Misfits just brought me back to my rebellious teen years the rapture, joy division, Kraftwerk

But then THEN new music micachu, metronome, James blunt this just isn't done in America

I'll think of others but right now this is what comes to mind

..i used to play this game when i was a kid

basically, you challenge each other with theme songs. one person would name a show title, the next would have to sing the lyrics (or hum the instrumental) to the show from start to finish.

all our favorite saturday mornin' cartoons
ol' school classics
catchy lyrics like the three's company, the fall guy, or cheers
instrumentals like taxi, sanford & son, barney miller, hillstreet blues, and m.a.s.h.

not just popular songs from that era edited to serve as a draw, but specific themes made for that show. somewhere along the way, producers decided it wasn't cool/necessary anymore and pretty much stopped makin' them.

recently, a few new shows are leanin' towards a return to the glory days. here's hopin' that trend continues.

..and miles to go before i sleep...

I was/am a sucker for a good TV theme

Twin Peaks
Misfits
Luther
Southland
ER
Bones
all them Law and Orders (though the opening theme Dick Wolf used for the last few seasons of Law and Order: Criminal Intent is kinda fiyah! I do find myself dancing to it sometimes)
Bluebloods
Covert Affairs (yea, folk don't watch this show at all on USA network, but the opening theme is catchy. *PLUS* they use all kinds of diverse and great music on that show. And, it's Piper Perabo--i likes her)

..just a good ol' boys
never meanin' no harm
beats all you never saw
been in trouble with the law
since the day they was born
straightenin' the curves
flattenin' the hills
someday the mountain might get 'em
but the law never will
makin' their way
the only way they know how
that's just a little bit more
than the law will allow
just' a good ol' boys
wouldn't change if they could
fightin' the system like
two modern day robinhoods

waylon jennings had me sold from the start

the song was easy, like lemonade on a hot summer day

lyrics:

Overture, curtains, lights,
This is it, the night of nights
No more rehearsing and nursing a part
We know every part by heart
Overture, curtains, lights
This is it, you'll hit the heights
And oh what heights we'll hit
On with the show this is it

Tonight what heights we'll hit
On with the show this is it

In response to Reply # 0

Version 1 - Scooby Doo, Where Are You?

Scooby-Dooby-Doo, Where Are You?
We got some work to do now.
Scooby-Dooby-Doo, Where Are You?
We need some help from you now.

Come on Scooby-Doo, I see you... pretending you got a sliver
But you're not fooling me, cause I can see, the way you shake and shiver.

You know we got a mystery to solve,
So Scooby Doo be ready for your act. Uh-uh Uh-uh
Don't hold back!
And Scooby Doo if you come through
you're going to have yourself a scooby snack!
That's a fact!

Scooby-Dooby-Doo, here Are You.
You're ready and you're willing.
If we can count on you Scooby Doo,
I know you'll catch that villain.

Version 2 - The New Scooby-Doo Movies

Scooby, Scooby-Doo, Looking For You.
Scooby, Scooby-Doo, Where Are Ya?
All The Stars Are Here, Waiting For You.
Couldn't Have A Show Without Ya.
Scooby, Scoobity-Doo.
Scooby, Scoobity-Doo.
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na.
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na.
Scooby, Scoobity-Doo.
Scooby, Scoobity-Doo.

the music on both these shows were central to the vibe of the show

in the case of the latter, the music was better than the stories/characters most times

Examples:

Schoolhouse Rock
Time for Timer (Yuckmouth, Hanker for a Hunk of Cheese, etc)
Sesame Street
Electric Company
Random other PSAs (We're Not Candy)

Half the stuff I learned back then was through memorizing songs - most of which are just as stuck in my head as the themes and other TV music

thinking back - it's crazy how much time we spent in front of the TV and STILL were outside playing 99% more than kids today

they weren't really advertising anything specific

stuff like:

- go outside and play
- don't put too much mayo/catsup/glop on your food
- brush your teeth (round and round....)
- don't eat poison/medicine (even going so far as to say, 'here parents we'll send you free Mr Meany stickers so your kids will know what not to mess with")
- learning some stuff (grammar, math, science, etc) can be fun

with no particular monetary benefit to the people putting in the work

compared to today where EVERYTHING is an add for something (even Sesame Street has devolved into a long form ad for Elmo)

on my kids behalf I really lament that there are not more adults who see TV (media in general really) as more than marketing.

not to over-romanticize it (they pimped us with products too) but at least there was something to provide a balance

pardon the digression/rant

Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it's you girl, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it

Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all

How will you make it on your own?
This world is awfully big, girl this time you're all alone
But it's time you started living
It's time you let someone else do some giving

Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all

this is another example of a theme 10million times better than the show (equally as good as barney miller's but not as well known because the show didn't last)

fish and a mixed-race group of misfit kids?

really?

Look at what's happened to me,
I can't believe it myself.
Suddenly I'm up on top of the world,
It should've been somebody else.

Believe it or not,
I'm walking on air.
I never thought I could feel so free-.
Flying away on a wing and a prayer.
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me.

It's like a light of a new day-,
It came from out of the blue.
Breaking me out of the spell I was in,
Making all of my wishes come true-.

Believe it or not,
I'm walking on air.
I never thought I could feel so free-.
Flying away on a wing and a prayer.
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me.

..since most movies don't use music in that manner

the theme song of a movie should be memorable. unfortunately, most movies today left this line of thinking behind, preferring to focus more on soundtrack hits than scores that stick with you.

still, there are franchises that are known to hook the viewer from the first note of a signature theme.

i'll list a few below...

..and miles to go before i sleep...

..say what you want about the film, but that soundtrack was incredible on so many levels.

not only did babyface write some of the most compassionate songs, but he managed to write/produce an entire soundtrack by himself, without sounding redundant (with the exception of "my funny valentine").

and to top it off, he did it with a bunch of black women (no gender-warz-o). shiiiiiiiiiit (c) clay davis. THAT'S DAMN-NEAR A MIRACLE!

the only people missin' from that soundtrack is anita baker & sade.

and while i quickly grew tired of "exhale" (shoop), i can't deny the power of that song and the legacy it has with women all over the world.

might be one of the greatest soundtracks ever...

I was introduced to Matlock & Mama's Family by my Granny & when I 1st heard those theme songs, all jovial & catchy, I didn't leave the room to go do somn else like bother my sisters. I wanted to see what they were about & I end up liking both shows. In The Heat Of The Night was also my Granny's doing. When dude song starting singing I was like "Damn, there MUST be some stuff going on w/such soulful opening, let's find out!"

X-Men, well, it's one of the best theme songs ever. Dude must've been a fan of Whitney Houston b/c it sounds like a rock version to "I'm Your Baby Tonight"
