"OFFICIAL BREAKING BAD "FELINA" POST"
Sun Sep-29-13 07:59 PM by ZooTown74

Rules are rules but the other post is huge, so here we are

Also, if you're here to "count L's" or take victory laps about... whatever, please do us a favor and take that lame shit over to GD

Breaking Bad
Season 5, Episode 16
Felina
Written and Directed by Vince Gilligan

Watch the episode's name be taken from Todd's attempt to get Lydia some lingerie as a birthday gift or some shit

Yes, I looked up the name Felina, and it's not just a play on the word "Finale"

But Zootown, black people and media, so...

It's not Walt's 'dream' - it's his 'fantasy.' Huge difference.
Oct 04th 2013
192
Why would Gretchen and Elliot have a picture of Walt in their house?
Oct 04th 2013

Given Walt's ego, isn't this something of a compromised fantasy?
Oct 04th 2013

Welp, Walt went out like a G. Both him and Jesse got their own form of redemption. Got more to say later, but kind of processing it now.

So, anyone care to share the "real" meaning of Felina?

i thought it was all pretty predictable, with the exception of the visit to see the grey matter people, which was the highlight of the episode.

It was everything I expected, but I wanted the unexpected.

Still one of the best shows ever, but the finale added nothing.

what did you want, a new storyline?

Of course you knew where it was going for the most part, it wasn't a mystery, it was a story that ended like a story.

good. it brought about states of self-realization that it takes tibetan monks a lifetime to achieve at the foot of mountains, when the cessation of his drive to protect his own interests and empire faded away in the looming background. left to face himself for the first time Walt was startled by his own devious actions and appearance reflecting back at him.

Most of your opinions are just some shit you read and regurgitated from someone else. Since you do that with people that are well known and respected, you figure your parroted perspectives are bullet proof and shouldn't even be discussed.

It's truly hilarious to be honest.

You being parrot without an original thought or opinion you've formulated based on your own observations doesn't mean the rest of OKP is that void of independent thought.

I'm not saying I'm the most or even only person here with a mind and opinions of my own, I'm just saying that you don't.

Seriously, if anyone wants to know what you think about something, they just need to read the opinions of someone famous close to the subject at hand, because your guaranteed to regurgitate it soon after.

Don't be mad at the messenger, just consider the message and improve yourself.

I'm too lazy to swipe it, but it's quite informative, especially the sections on Jesse's fate, and "writing for the audience"

I enjoyed the episode and I'm glad each character got what they deserved (that was always the goal). But the writers made it a point to write the unexpected for five seasons. Personally, I'm surprised at the predictability of the last ep.

The writers, or those who spent time trying to make predictions to the point where pretty much any possible ending had been "called" by someone?

Personally, as someone who has seen far too many finales that are either (a) goodbye-fests or (b) symbolic open-ended philosophizing, I'm overwhelmingly glad that a show that was always so incredibly focused on story arc chose to have its finale focus on story arc until literally the final scene.

Usually the story is resolved well before the final moments-- this finale denied total resolution for any character that remained alive (the Jesse ending was OUTSTANDING), and denied resolution for its main character until the final shot.

I find THAT from a storytelling perspective to be far more (a) unpredictable and (b) satisfying than any sort of crazy twist they could have forced down our throats. Why surprise us for the sake of a surprise? They told the story. They weren't thinking about "what's the last thing they'll expect?" That wouldn't serve the characters or the series.

But how they got from Y-Z had me (personally) asking for a more creative approach in the final ep when dealing with each characters ultimate fate. Writing that routinely went out of its way to go left suddenly became cut and dry. I guess I was expecting a different approach from a creative standpoint. Everything felt a bit hurried.

But overall its hard to be upset. Great series, good final episode.

It's not the writers fault that millions people dedicated their free time to theorizing every possible route for the show each week.

The can't just be reading the internet and saying, welp someone is onto this idea let's change plans.

This show was never about a twist ending

The story served the characters and NOT the other way around, which is the mistake A LOT of shows make. They played this shit PERFECTLY.

In response to Reply # 41

all of a sudden the show felt like it was in a hurry; maybe just a byproduct of its iconic fast pace finally having nowhere else to turn. it didn't help that most of the predictions getting plopped around places I ready on the internet ended up being pretty accurate this one last time. as someone that doesn't sit around thinking about what might happen, it stunk a bit to see a lot of stuff I figured were misguided guesses as usual.

the first half of the episode felt pretty typically great, though. the encounter at the Schwartz house at first felt like the acknowledgement that this was a fan service episode (after the flashbacks and the Badger/Skinny Pete scene) and then quickly became the highlight of the show. loved the pan shot to reveal Walt in the house even if it made the ABQPD look like clowns even more than the Nazis.

I was really entertained, but definitely let down that this episode ended the series in such a classic western fashion. I remember some small part of me being really disappointed when Walt winced as he was lying on top of Jesse, accepting the magic bullet that'd pull all the real drama out of the room.

But maybe I'm just not willing to say goodbye.

IMO, the pivotal scene of the episode was when he finally admits to Skylar why he did what he did. The ego which motivated him to go to all the crazy lengths that he did was finally revealed to have been stripped bare...and hence, we got an episode which reflected that straight-forwardness.

The missteps on the Breaking Bad weren't as glaring as the missteps on The Wire in my opinion. Some stuff bothers me in terms of logisitics on Breaking Bad, such as the stevia/risin tampering from last night given that Walt is on the run and is operating with a limited time frame for his actions, but that last season's police storyline from The Wire was a complete mess IMO. Nothing redeemable from that storyline that I can remember.

...better than "The Wire" doesn't mean we have to look for reasons that aren't there for something that was wrong with the way "Breaking Bad" wrapped up. The Wire can still be the GOAT, and this can still be a great finale. They aren't mutually exclusive.

"hitmen" was pretty goddamn funny and quite the Vince Gilligan touch

On a lesser show, that reveal would have been tonally inappropriate for the episode and the show, but it actually speaks to Vince's darkly funny sensibilities

I should also mention that no show in recent memory has done a better job of answering most "logic" questions the moment they're brought up by having a character ask them on behalf of the audience...

through the patio glass. NOT that I expected THOSE TWO, but I figured Walt had hooked up laser sights to some springs or something and tied them to the hood of his car or...something. I figured if he had "two of the best hitmen west of the Mississippi" they wouldn't have SUCH shaky shots.

That said, a little surprising neither Badger nor Pete played a Metal Gear game and thought of getting some Diazepam.

When Walt was entering Gretchen and Elliot's house, they turned on classical music, and as Walt closed the doors behind them he had his arms raised high in the air like he was conducting the orchestra. Kind of demonstrating his control over how the entire episode would play out.

It's really hard to put a dead stop to such a fluid medium...but as we have seen time and time again, Breaking Bad has a remarkable way of navigating such conundrums. The majority of fireworks and showdowns and drama were already taken care of in the build-up so in the finale we could really focus on the main character...his genius, his faults, his mistakes, and finally, his honesty.

Honesty was the common theme in two unforgettable scenes which resonated with me. The first when Walter finally admits to Skylar why he did what he did....for himself, because it made him feel alive. The second when Jesse forces Walt to say what he actually wants rather than trying to play on Jesse's emotions. Both scenes strip away the rationalizations of Heisenberg and in the presence of the two people who were most impacted by them.

The beauty of the finale was that the show didn't try too hard or try to be something it wasn't. It was Walter White coming back to close loose-ends and face the truth. Story line and story archs were the focus until the very end, and that commitment to story is what made the show so unforgettable. Bravo.

say a show that always tied up any & all of its loose ends over five seasons would have an issue with them doing so on a more macro scale in its swan song.

Everything about it felt true to the series, entertaining as hell & beautifully paced to the final overhead shot.

One question though on the song 'El Paso', saw it referenced by the Marty Robbins tape then played & then sung by Walt (symptomatic of him probably playing it umpteen times while driving across the country), which ep was it that featured the song the first time in the series?

Because back whenever that was I think I thought it was sort of a reference to the city where Hank had flopped as a border agent & then this time around (with the title of this ep being the woman in the song's story) it was more about Walt.

Never really listened to that song's story in linear fashion when hearing the Grateful Dead do it (and there version was really the only version I was familiar with), mostly because Bob Weir was probably just too annoying in delivering it for me to concentrate on it.

Lot of good music references in this last episode, the 'Lydia' ringtone cracked me up, never heard that cut before.

And the Badfinger closer was great.

How slow are you expecting bullets to travel? They have less than a second to find cover. The only two that did have cover were Walt and Jesse. Todd just happen to be in the far side of the room where the bullet spray passed over him.

First you had the big shootout, then you had them sneaking in and out of a house that was under police surveillance (which nobody here seemed to mind?)... So them ducking/phasing through bullets may very well be within their skill set

I'd say Uncle Jack feeling compelled to bring out Jesse for Walt to see felt like the biggest stretch in the episode. It was like the key scene in the beginning, but instead of dumb luck it was with human behavior. The nazis have always felt a bit like a cheat code from the moment they were introduced. I'm not mad but I think in a few years we'll look back and consider them something of a weak point in the series. We'll also consider this one of the best series ever so who gives a fuhk

Walt has always been good at pushing certain buttons. And that certain button with Jack was "You aren't a man of your word. You're dishonorable."

Jack is like "You fuckin right I'm dishonorable but I'll be goddamn if you say it to my face."

I just thought it was awfully convenient that Jack would react that way. The nazi crew has always been convenient above all else. But I guess Gus Fring is a tough act to follow, nemesis wise

I prefer when Walt was manipulating characters whose wants had been a little better established. That way it kinda makes sense and you can see why they'd allow themselves to be played like that. This didn't feel like that, to me at least.

A podcast called The One Who Knocks mentioned this as a complaint a few podcast ago in terms of the Nazi seeming more like an evil or dark force rather than human adversaries, if that makes sense. One of the hosts of the podcast, David Chen is what I think his name is, also has been complaining about the flash forwards since their inception since they robbed the viewer of some of the mystery in terms of the events that unfolded. I personally didn't mind them since they added intrigue to the show, but I somewhat see his point, in particular when Hank and Jesse teamed up against Walt. Since you bring up the point about weak points of the show, I'm curious what you and other folks think about his argement about the flash forwards.

This series made a tradition of doing them and doing them well. And for me, they often added to the mystery. They didn't solve the puzzle so much as showed you the pieces out of order. Just go look at the dozens of crazy ass (and wrong) theories on the internet regarding what viewers were expecting, doesn't seem like too much got spoiled to me

Plus, the finale moved at a really nice pace I thought, partly because it had less ground to cover thanks to the flash forwards.

Well, they ducked out the back of said house, under the cover of darkness, so it's quite possible that they wouldn't have been seen... and it was around 2 in the morning, so it's not like the police surveillance would have been at their most vigilant...

And as far as ducking bullets goes, I don't buy that mainly because they're "on their home court," so to speak. Why would they necessarily feel the need to be on-guard when their at their own spot, and they're entertaining a frail nerd that they can easily dispatch of (and remember, this is the first time they've seen him since the cancer got worse for Walt)?

>I'd say Uncle Jack feeling compelled to bring out Jesse for

I agree but I'm not sure how else you could do it. I suppose Walt could have demanded to see the facilities they were using to produce their meth, and when they get there Jesse just happens to be there, but that imo that feels just as weird as: 1. Kenny and company not scanning the car, including the trunk (which, again, you kinda buy because it's frail Walt White); and 2. having each of the Nazis in the same room at the same time; 3. Uncle Jack demanding that Jesse be brought out for Walt to see.

Another route would have been to have Walt demand they bring Jesse out, since they "failed to do the job" he asked them to do...

The only thing is, I understand why it happened the way it happened, as this entire episode was pretty much the greatest hits of Walter White, Scientific Mastermind and Master Manipulator...

I dunno. Plot device or no, I always thought they were there to give Walt an example of some REAL badasses/businessmen... to give Walt some flavor on what this world really was about, as opposed to the game of dress-up he put on with Heisenberg... Uncle Jack and his boyz didn't need a porkpie hat to get busy, as it were...

Walt willingly shows up to their compound (the fuck is up with this compound by the way?), BOOM, they got him. Yet for no reason whatsoever they go along with this unnecessary ruse of a 'business meeting', stand in their proper places, bring out Jesse to defend some sense of honor that in my mind wasn't all that firmly established beforehand... Look, I loved this ep, but not every element of it is gonna be a 10/10. And that's not to say I could've written it any better, sheeeit.

I hear you about the nazis being a "dark force" but the flipside of that coin is that their lack of screen time and character development left them feeling a little flat. They had a function – I don't think it was so much to show Walt the grimy side of the game, I think he'd learned that already and from more interesting teachers – I think this crew served as a means to an end, basically allowing the writers to wrap things up the way they did.

I just finished watching the show and Uncle Jack caring enough about Walt to delay killing him did seem a bit odd. The other instance of Jack showing some inkling of caring for Walt was him of course leaving him with the barrel of $11 million. But like you said, Breaking Bad didn't get them enough screen time to show why Uncle Jack would care enough about Walt to spare him the barrel or care enough about his opinion to delay the shooting.

it's not how fast the bullets are travelling
it's more about how fast that actuator rotated
the rate of fire for an m60
and the height of the field of fire
allowing that walt perfectly calculated the vector
and parked the caddy in the perfect spot (and both are a stretch)
there was enuff time for at least a couple of nazis to hit the deck
even civilians instinctively do this
they don't even need cover
just get below wherever walt placed center mass
granted, i haven't zapruder'd the motherfucker
but yeah, ALL of them getting hit is a bit of a reach

even then, i'm not even mad
a bit of deus ex machina is to be expected
but this one is kinda bleh

and as much as I loved seeing Jack try to negotiate his way out the way Walt did and Walt being more gangsta with it, and Jesse being able to choke out Todd, the whole thing was far too convenient that all the other Nazis were dead

the standing thing i could get since they were watching a fight

at the very least i would have liked to see walt walk around the room and shoot an injured Nazi or two before he got to Jack

it doesn't ruin the episode or anything, but it does bug me some

http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/series-finale-review-breaking-bad-felina-its-all-over-now-baby-blue#~oiUZqLb6IeZU6w

Moments after "Breaking Bad" concluded, Vince Gilligan joined Aaron Paul (and, of all people, Jimmy Kimmel) for the final installment of "Talking Bad," whose host Chris Hardwick was very pleased that Gilligan hadn't gone for an oblique ending that left viewers wondering what the hell had just happened. "The Sopranos" was cited, and that's the finale that's cast a shadow over everything that's come after, asking creators what kind of show they want to be making and fans what kind of show they want to be watching. Gilligan praised "The Sopranos" ending, but added, "this show needed the ending that was perfect for it. This show was intended all along to be very finite. It's a story that starts at A and ends at Z, as it were. It's a very closed-ended thing."

And we sure as hell got resolution in "Felina"(*). Short of finding out exactly why Don Eladio wasn't allowed to kill Gus (an old piece of business that wasn't going to be dealt with two years after the Chicken Man exploded) or what exactly went down between Walt, Gretchen and Elliott all those years ago (which could, in theory, have come up during Walt's visit to their new mansion), all our questions were answered, all our plot threads tied up neatly. Walt arranges to get the remaining cash (which he was able to collect from the cabin before the cops closed in) to Walter Jr. on his 18th birthday. He admits to Skyler what we've known for so long — that "family" was his excuse for doing something that made him feel happy and powerful — and arranges for both the discovery of Hank and Gomez's bodies and the end of Skyler's legal troubles. He poisons Lydia with the ricin, somehow sneaking it into one of her Stevia packets, and takes out Jack and the Nazis with the machine gun he bought from Jim Beaver (with some help from one last bit of improvised engineering). Jesse kills Todd and drives off into the night, and Walt dies from a stray bullet wound he caught during the massacre of the Nazis, but not before he gets to admire the chemistry set he helped design one last time.

(*) As pointed out on the Internet earlier in the week, the title can be read as the chemical symbols for iron, lithium and sodium (aka "blood, meth and tears") or as an anagram for "finale." It could also be referring to the Marty Robbins' song "El Paso," which plays in the tape deck of the stolen New Hampshire car, and which features a Mexican girl by the name.

Every move Walt makes works to perfection — even the unexpected discovery that Jesse is Jack's slave, rather than partner, and therefore needs to be saved. There is no ambiguity about what happened, and only some about what may happen down the road. (We assume, for instance, that Gretchen and Elliott will set up the trust for Flynn rather than risk the wrath of Walt's "hitmen," but we don't know what the kid will do with that money.)

I admire Gilligan's desire to dot every i and cross every t, and I adored many individual moments of the finale: the Badger/Skinny Pete punchline to the Gretchen/Elliott scene, Walt finally being honest about his motivations (and stroking a sleeping Holly's face while Skyler watched and cried), and the sheer visceral thrill of Jesse giving Todd the choking he deserved, to name just a few. This was cathartic, this was definitive, this was as gorgeously-acted as "Breaking Bad" has always been.

A 'Breaking Bad' recap from someone who doesn't watch 'Breaking Bad'
Liana doesn't watch 'Breaking Bad,' but she's pretty sure she's figured out t...

But was it ultimately too neat?

As Gilligan said, he had to make the ending that's right for his show. A hard cut to black in the middle of a confounding final scene that will be analyzed like the Zapruder film is not the way "Breaking Bad" should have wrapped up. This has always been a much more plot-driven and precise series. Each of the full seasons (not counting the strike-abbreviated first) concluded in a way that built on everything that came before, whether it was something planned from the start (the plane crash in season 2) or improvised later by the writers (Gus replacing the Cousins as season 3's big bad).

That being said, for all that "Breaking Bad" itself has been very orderly and precise, Walter White has not been. Walt is reckless. He doesn't think things through, and even when he does, his plans rarely go off without a hitch. He's always been scrambling, always improvising, always trying to deal with one unintended consequence in ways that lead to three or four more. Even when he accomplishes the seemingly impossible — blowing up Gus, or taking out all of Mike's guys in a two-minute window — he is helped enormously by both luck and by partners like Tio Hector and Uncle Jack.(**)

(**) So many important uncles in this show. Hector was Tuco's, Jack was Todd's, and of course Hank was Flynn and Holly's.

So for the finale to feature Walt largely operating solo (with the occasional small bit of help from Skinny Pete or Jim Beaver) and having everything work out as planned — with the sort of precision one might have expected from the watch Walt left behind at the gas station pay phone — didn't feel exactly like the kind of ending I might have expected from this show.

Of course, Gilligan has also talked in the past about the idea of a moral force in the "Breaking Bad" universe. When he and I discussed season 2's plane crash, he described it as "a rain of fire coming down around our protagonist's ears, sort of like the judgment of God." From that perspective, maybe Walt's sudden ability to settle all family business with minimal fuss isn't too much narrative economy, but rather the God of "Breaking Bad" deciding that after all the harm Walter White had caused to so many people, matters needed to be set right before he died, and he was the man to do it. Note that Walt — a man of science, not faith — prays when he sits in the snow-covered car in New Hampshire, desperate to get it started and escape the arriving cops; maybe once his actions were genuinely selfless and penitent, and once he was so close to death anyway, all his remaining prayers were answered.

I don't know. I'm going to be mulling over "Felina" for a while, and mulling over what, if anything, it has to say about this show's place in the larger pantheon. This last stretch of episodes has been so incredible that nothing short of epic failure at the very end would have knocked "Breaking Bad" off its perch. This was far from epic failure, and to a degree the previous three episodes were so messy and so devastating that the show practically earned the right for this vaguely happy ending. Walt defeats all his enemies, but dies in the process. Flynn may be getting $9.7 million (give or take taxes and legal fees), and Skyler may be avoiding prosecution, but I imagine both would rather have Hank alive, and their family intact. Jesse goes free, and for a moment seems genuinely happy as he roars down the open road, but he'll be carrying the physical and emotional scars of his association with Mr. White for the rest of his life.

Because of all that, "Felina" doesn't feel like a cheat, or a massive misstep, or an overreach. This is one of the greatest shows of my lifetime, and nothing in this concluding chapter changes that.

But it also felt so neat, and so orderly, in such an un-"Breaking Bad" sort of way, that I don't think I can give the show bonus points for its last episode in the same way that "The Shield" or "Six Feet Under" get extra credit for their finales. Most of this last half-season was astonishing, but I don't think Gilligan was just being self-effacing when he said "Ozymandias" was the best episode they ever made. That was, essentially, where the story of Walter White ended. These last two weeks have been an extended epilogue, the first half ("Granite State") gut-wrenching, the second half satisfying and tidy.

I understand why Hardwick, and so many of the people I follow on Twitter, were so pleased with the ending. In an era where the great dramas so often overreach, obfuscate or stumble in their conclusions, this was definitive. These were the final, unmistakable steps on the path Walter White put us on nearly six years ago.

But given everything that Walt had been through, and put us through, over these 62 episodes, I think I might have preferred the whole package be wrapped in a bow that wasn't so tight. "Granite State" suggested a world in which Heisenberg was dead and useless, but "Felina" brought him back to life, briefly more potent than ever before. It's a more cathartic, upbeat conclusion than if the series had ended with Walt getting into Robert Forster's van or living alone in that snowy cabin, but is it ultimately a more fitting one for this series?

Some other thoughts:

* I didn't put a clock on whether the episode actually had a bigger ad load than the last few, but by keeping ads out of the conclusion altogether, that meant that the opening acts had to start and stop very abruptly. Bills have to be paid, and I also appreciate Gilligan's desire to have the concluding moments uninterrupted, but it didn't play very smoothly — and I imagine was maddening for the people who caught up via Netflix (with no ads at all) and were watching live for the first time this season.

* In our brief revisits to the flashforwards from "Live Free Or Die" and "Blood Money," we unfortunately do not see Carol again, but Skyler and Marie spend an awful lot of time discussing her (and Marie's trouble distinguishing her from other neighbor Becky) on their phone call. I'll take it. That phone call also provides some closure to the Lambert sisters' relationship, as whatever schism there was earlier this summer is put aside so Marie can try to protect Skyler.

* Jesse's fantasy about making the perfect wood box, rather than being Todd's meth slave, was a callback to season 3's "Kafkaesque," where he tells Jere Burns and the rest of the 12-step group about a similar box he made in woodshop, then traded for an ounce of weed even though he loved it so much. Jesse was more marginal in this last episode than I would have liked, but that was a nice moment dwelling on his history before he later gets free, kills Todd and declines to kill Mr. White.

* Todd's ringtone for Walt was Thomas Dolby, and the one he has for Lydia is a version of "Lydia the Tattooed Lady."

* Elsewhere musically, we get the Marty Robbins song early, and we close with Badfinger's "Baby Blue," whose lyrics allude to both Walt's beloved meth and to a man who gets what he deserved.

Again, I suspect I'll be writing more — about the series as a whole, if not the finale — later in the week, but in the meantime, what did everybody else think?

Outside of him confronting his old partners, the sense of dread, of WTF-ness wasn't there.

Does that mean it was a bad ending? No
Does that hurt the show in any way? No
And there's a perfectly logical reason why it was so streamlined, and considering how tight everything was if we got a 'breaking bad'-esque ending we would probably have hella questions this morning when we haven one. So it is nitpicking.

But as someone said above, it's probably the most shocking way they could have ended it.

Besides the Gretchen & Elliot scene, it was surprisingly straight forward and nothing unexpected. When Walt was trying to reach for his keys, you were just expecting SOMETHING to go wrong, and even after the bullets finished firing, you'd think Todd was gonna flip out and do something, but things ended up the way I think most viewers would want it to end, which I would say is shocking for BB. I LOVED how Walt shoots Jack and not giving a shit about the rest of his money in the end. Also made Hank look even more badass since Jack was begging for his life.

Gonna miss this show so much. Now need to hatch a Heisenberg plan to get my fiancee to get hooked on this stuff.

We saw that he moves to NH before he ever does and winds up alone

We saw he comes back on his 52nd birthday

We saw him buy a big ass gun, go to his now condemned house and pick up the Ricin.

As the season progressed we knew the gun was for the Nazi group

The Ricin had some questions to it, but the real purpose of the ricin in this show was to convince Jesse to help kill Gus, it still had to be used but it was already used for it's big reason.

The rest of the season was filling in the gaps of how that all happened and then wrapping up how the story ends. The show was about twist and turns but the ending was not, the ending was laid out for us to just enjoy the ride.

In response to Reply # 0

All of them I guess, but El Paso especially. I have heard that song a millions times.

When I saw him open that glove box I laughed and had to explain to my wife that Marty Robbins had a song called El Paso, then it came on when he turned on the car.

We all knew he was going back, but I knew that he was going to die "with his love" when I heard that song.

I told my wife the basis of the story, but left out the end part until after the show.

Such a fitting song and Felina for the title of the episode.

Thanks for everything BB.

In response to Reply # 0

I wonder what happened with Brock? Did Meth Damon leave her there to be found by her son? They take him? Social Services?

I would imagine Jesse would be seeking him out after being freed from the Nazis.

Having at least seen sirens rolling up to the Brocks house, or a news report on a TV about it or something to at least know wasn't just left there to find his mom.

All this is probably "fan service" that everyone is complaining about and its not really a big deal for me, just something that left me wondering and felt like it needed some kind of resolution.

Think about this

Hey I'm a recovering drug addict who just spent years working with the meth kingpin of the south west. I have a huge arrest record and no real reason you should give me this kid, but I used to sleep with his mom and really liked him a lot. Can I have him now that she's dead?

Brock either went to social services or to some family of Andrea's as would happen in real life. No need to show us that, it's just what happens with kids.

The meth dealing ex boyfriend with no legal rights doesn't get him.

just figured he would go see him and try to maintain some kind of relationship with him. Its not like he has much to offer, other than a familiar face that was nice to him before now that his moms gone.

I was more wondering if the kid had to find his mom like that, or if they dumped her body etc.

Didn't plan on it...thought seeing it with people would suck. I wanted to see it in my apartment. Plus, I didn't have tickets...which sold out in 32 seconds.

But then my wife was like, "It'd be cool to go I think."

So, Aaron Paul tweeted he had hidden 20 tickets around Hollywood and would tweet locations, so we just got in the car on a whim. She drove, I refreshed, and we just so happened to be driving near one location on Melrose, across from the Paramount Studios....and snagged 2 free tickets.

It was REALLY cool...and like everyone from the cast outside of Anna Gunn and Betsy Brandt was there. Glad we saw it like that, and I was happy it was a very respectful, quiet screening.

These in particular were tucked in an envelope behind a garage sale sign on the street.

Some were behind Funyans in a convenience store, Aaron was parked in an Audi outside the Laugh Factory handing out 2 tickets, some were in a newspaper stand, etc.

saw it publicly too, luckily my friends who hosted the event were very clear on the no talking policy. the hand dryer in the bathroom did disrupt things a little though.

It wasn't the shock fest some of us expected. With all the pre-hype discussions many had already predicted that the ricin was for lydia's stevia and seeing it play out wasnt a disappointment at all, just not all the shocking.

More than anything, I was so so happy when Walt threw jesse to the ground after seeing what he'd done to jesse. to see Jesse explode through that fence was so cathartic and satisfying. His earlier-in-the-season scream to Hank of "he can't keep getting away with this" came full circle when he acknowledged Mr. White saving him but also told him once and for all "if you wanna die, do it yourself"

It's funny that critics and fans reactions seem to be calling this a happy ending. while it may be far more positive than any of us would have predicted, this was far from happy. we see the tortured and tormented lives of jesse, marie, skyler, and flynn. whether or not the money ever comes to flynn, he's lost his hero. skyler's lost any semblance of respect or love in her hometown. marie has lost her rock. jesse has nowhere and everywhere to go. he has no money, no life, no family (i mean, he does and doesn't). and walter white is dead, with no one next to him but his beloved chemistry vessels.

he may not have gone out quite as gilligan may led us to believe in a scarface blaze of glory. he did the best he could to "make it right" but nothing is right...its just a little less wrong.

Goodbye, Breaking Bad.

i think it only does that in walt's head. he thinks if he gets the money to his kids, gives skyler something to run with in court, and kill some nazis that everything will be right with the world. that's a bit optimistic. skyler is still gonna have a tough time in court, jesse probably won't have it easy for a while, he's being kinda presumptuous to think that the schwartzes will go along with this, and at some point walt jr. might become smart enough to figure out where this money is from. not to mention it might take years for everyone to sort out this story. i mean if walt's story ended with tuco or even krazy 8 it would have been in the media forever.

i think some are a little disappointed that walt died happy. understandable, but there really wasn't a way around that. the only death he's scared of is going out with a whimper, so death isn't really a fitting punishment for him unless he sits in NH and doesn't complete his objectives. that wasn't gonna happen, and if he didn't get the money to the kids or kill the nazis we'd all be pretty pissed. eps 5-7 were walt's comeuppance because he was alive, broken, and finally saw the consequences of his actions. this episode is almost an epilogue.

I personally think those herbs will make good on getting the money to Walt Jr. just because they were so goddamn shook by Walt. Not that Heisenberg wasn't a suburban Scarface, but these two were looking at him like he was goddamn Dr. Doom.

I'm sure as soon as he left they were on Wikipedia reading about money laundering. Now will Walt Jr take the money, that I dunno.

And as far as what will happen to Jesse? I prefer not to even think about it. In that moment, he was free, and that's where I'd prefer to leave things

Marie knew of Jesse's involvement with Walt, which means the DEA knows of Jesse on some level. Also, Marie may or may not have been present when he made the confession video for Hank, so she could possible have given up some of the details to the remaining DEA agents as well. And there's also the fact the local ABQ police were onto Jesse when he was tossing out his $5 million before Hank got to him. All in all, odds are slim to none that Jesse stays local.

Marie can't prove anything, that confession doesn't mean much if the rest of the DEA/a lawyer weren't involved. And we know how obsessed Hank was with this investigation. Taping that confession for a pair of rogue cops out for vengeance won't hold up. and given what we now know about walt and the nature of his relationship w/ jesse, the majority of it can be sold as manipulation. not saying that would hold up in court but it could be his story, and it wouldn't even be a lie.

the money is trickier, but that investigation seemed like a dead end for the local police. of course the DEA could catch wind of it and it's a different story, but i still think walt's manipulation is a strong case.

The scarface ending happened. Walt, once again, got the best of someone with his brains - the Nazis could have killed him, but he tweaked Jack's pride at the last second and got his opportunity.

Just like two episodes ago, Jack pleads Walt to spare a life for the seven barrels of money, and just like two episodes ago, the plea is cut off by a bullet to the face.

Hank and Gomie will get a proper burial. Marie will get closure.

Lydia, who always cared so much about her perfect appearance (and her fucking Stevia packets) dies sneezing and puking in bed.

Jesse was freed, and got to brutally murder Todd for his lack of human emotion and his offhand murders of Drew Sharp and Andrea.

Walt got the last laugh in his relationship with Gretchen and Elliot, and his family will finally receive compensation for the shit he put them through.

Walt FINALLY admits that the business was more for him than for his family, and Skyler seemed genuinely relieved and pleased with him for coming to terms with it.

Walt and Jesse shared a final look of grim recognition for one another.

And Walt dies next to his one true love, as the cops descend upon him, ready to uncover the greatest crime story America has ever seen. His legacy will live on. They'll remember his name.

and the fact that Jack went out begging and pleading when Hank refused to.

and i love Lydia's death. she always avoids getting her hands dirty, and puts the blinders on to the violence around her. she's avoided the reality of her world for far too long by dealing in coffee shops and drinking her tea, so being tricked into a slow, painful death when she thought she was safe is very fitting.

Outstanding final episode but they'll always be someone somewhere to find fault

The Shield finale got universal love I thought. The show as a whole had it's detractors, myself included, but that finale was as good as things could have gotten given the substance of the show.

And that includes Breaking Bad and Friday Night Lights.

I'd put it behind both of those shows overall, but that last sequence of the finale was a damn masterpiece.

or when Gilligan said he wanted to have Skyler commit suicide?

he *IS* twisted LOLOL

which makes CBS resurrecting the pilot he did with them 10 years ago and put it into active development to possibly be greenlight and potentially end up as a series next year is a head scratcher.

I get it prestige wise, but yea...

but Gilligan=great storyteller.

Whatever he does next, I can't wait to see it.

i have noticed a pattern with my fav writers/directors and the way they end a season or series. and they always tend to lean towards the 2nd/3rd-to-last ep(s) being the grandiose one(s), with the actual finale (series or season) being more of an epilogue. i think BB earned the right to go this route.

whilst it was tonally different, so was Walter. he had been exposed and stripped bare as Heisenberg. he had physically, emotionally and spiritually rotted to the core as Walter White. so the person we're seeing in the last two eps is someone completely new. he didn't even regress to his older WW persona from back in the Grey Matters/Gretchen association days. he was both the sum of all those personas and also none of them. i attribute this transformation to the decisions he made on his way to some form of redemption (just when we thought he wasn't capable or wouldn't be able to pull it off). his split-second decisions to stall for time with Uncle Jack, and then SAVE Jesse (after most-likely planning to kill him along with the Nazis), are testament to that transformation (showing both the ruthless tenacity of Heisenberg, and the sympathy/empathy of Walter).

it's almost like he'd reached a balance b/w these competing personas? but way too late in the game. moral being this is a guy who had to lose, BADLY, to enlighten himself and balance himself out as a human being. thus, vacating his hole in the snow, and carving a path toward what he'd always BLEATED about: providing for his family. admitting that wasn't his true intention was truly revelatory, and delivered in a beautifully understated fashion. there was no other way to go about it. he couldn't have yelled and screamed it like a crying baby. he was perfectly still and frank and honest.

the song choices were so on the money. big big kudos on that. Walt's visit to Gretchen & Elliott was (as i guessed) not with the intention of killing them. Walt's petty, but he was never going to murder them over their strategic decision to distance themselves from Walt and rewrite his legacy with the company. BUT, cornering them into washing his dirty money for the benefit of his family? masterful. as soon as those laser sights came on, gut instinct told me he was merely playing on their first-world comfort level. i honestly thought he'd paid like $5 to a couple of random kids to shine lasers for him, PLEASANT surprise when it turned out to be Badger (and/or Beaver) n Skinny Pete. i dont care if it was fan service, those two bring levity to every single scene they're in (Pete's line about things being sketchy, "morality-wise", was hilarity, and good meta commentary).

not every single thing was tied up into a neat bow, despite majority of the loose threads being...threaded. and that's just fine. there isn't guna be a weepy reconciliation b/w Walt and Flynn (Jr. made that clear with the phone call). as much as it was a punch to the GUTS, it speaks to the brilliance of the show that it managed to elicit sympathy for Walt as he longingly/regretfully gazed at Flynn, knowing he would never win back his love or trust before the end. that hurts, even for a monster like Heisenberg.

as for peripheral characters (wtf happened to Kuby?), leaving Huell sitting in that room was kinda hilarious and cool. much as he became a fan fav, we didn't need to revisit that story. the fate of Brock was also somethin that was left up in the air (most of us just assume Jesse would try and get in touch with the kid). i'm super duper glad SAUL made it alive, as he should (dude is the most resourceful character on the show outside of Walt).

the most touching moments revolved around two key scenes for me: Walt's final visit to Skyler and Holly, and the non-verbal understanding nod b/w Walt and Jesse before the end, showing despite EVERYthing, Jesse, in some morbid way, gives a crap. their relationship has always been the driving factor of the show, the push and pull, always seeing Jesse get sucked into one more bad situation after another after trying to get out (another Godfather callback perhaps in a "just when i thought i was out...they pulllll me back in" style).

in a lot of ways, Walt got to hone his skills of deception and mental trickery with Jesse, the poor bastard. HOWEVER, and i'm not slipping into some demented GD-style "fuck that lil bitch Pinkamn/Walt Jr/Skyler/someone who isn't Heisenberg" shit. yes we pay for the ticket and enjoy the ride along with Walt, that's always a given, but we're also explicitly guided along in terms of morality and shown what's cool and what's not. Jesse got involved in and executed a number of dodgy acts, including murdering someone in cold blood, playing a rather large role in the destruction of Jane (it wasn't just Walt's decision that killed her), got Andrea killed, and is co-responsible for flooding the market with and creating brand new meth addicts. dude coulda walked away from the life, but got sucked back in for revenge and copped 6 more months of hell on Earth. seems like it was his penance or jail-time for the shit he pulled. and Walt's come-uppance is just to plain DIE. i think that nod in the end was so LOADED with acknowledgement of both past and present indiscretions both have visited upon each other and onto others, it was all that they needed to do or say in that moment (or their final moments together).

Jesse then roaring outta the gate was cathartic. i really felt happy for the kid (and i dig his longer hair lol).

Walt. what can be said about one of THE characters of our modern times. ppl will be dissecting him for years to come, with great reasons. i was both personally and emotionally satisfied at his conclusion, cos after everything got stripped away, he was just a dude in love with the chemistry. no evil masterminding, no treading lightly, just a dude with his toys knowing he achieved a heckuva lot in a short period of time. and we're allowed to feel that feeling with him, despite all the carnage it caused along the way, just becos that's how good BB was, it made u give a fuck about the monster.

(i typed all this in my last hour at work lol, sorry for getn speechy or elongated with it).

it's a pretty cool theory.
but there's too many things that Walt couldn't have known about to have it pop up in a fantasy reality he creates during his dying moments.
that said, the whole ep after him finding the keys DID feel hecka dream-like.

great.
i need to watch this shit again.

But the interpretation I'm going with is that the writers were basically answering his prayers, and were gonna see to it that he got what he wanted. "Give me this one impossible thing (not just finding the keys, but the cops not finding him, etc.) and I'll make sure the rest of the plot stays relatively hole free."

I like this dead Walt theory and it's something I'd considered – the ending reminded me of Taxi Driver, and that's one where I definitely ride with the 'dying fantasy' theory

But you can't just point to the dream logic of this one episode and ignore the precedents set for it throughout the series. Lots of convenient, unlikely shit has happened along the way to get Walt to this point. Does that mean he died in Season 1? Trying to separate the 'real' story from the 'imaginary' story is often a fool's errand when the whole story is in fact imaginary. Just because your suspension of disbelief runs out, it doesn't mean the show's storytelling mechanics have ceased to function.

And the whole "I was alive" thing, it's like people are looking for literal ways to back up their nonliteral interpretation. Walt IS dead, he IS a ghost, but not necessarily in the 'Who you gonna call' sense.

The keys were classic Deus Ex Machina.

And, as there are 5 seasons, it tracks with a classic 5 act Shakespeare tragedy.

Hank's death in Ozymandias is the cathartic action that lets Walt realize his flaw. Granite State is the reckoning with that flaw. And Felina is like the duel at the end of Hamlet, with Jesse left alive for the reckoning a la Horatio. IDK WHAT people were looking for, but Felina was pretty perfect.

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/culture/2013/09/breaking-bad-finale-reviewed.html

I agree with almost every word she wrote there.

Also, here's a link to a good summary article that puts all of Norm's (pretty excellent) tweets in context:

http://philly.barstoolsports.com/around-barstool/norm-macdonald-poses-theory-that-walter-white-actually-died-in-snowy-car-is-probably-right/

I'm personally hopping on board with this theory 100% because it's the only one, for me, that rises to the level of greatness that I'd seen on the show up until that episode. The finale felt so wildly out of step with the rest of the series (and specifically where all of S5 had been going) that, to me, this is the best way to explain it all.

The other thing I love about this theory is that it means the penultimate episode (which I personally felt after it aired was masterful and possibly the best episode of the series) was the true ending of the Walter White story, and the one that, IMO, is much more fitting and realistic. (The shitty thing about this theory is that Jesse is still a meth slave, but he probably got caught by cops after crashing through the gates anyway...)

But the icing on the cake to me is that the only place in which all the shit that happened in the finale is plausible is in Walt's mind, and for that reason alone, this theory itself is more plausible than the episode at face value. This isn't really a blind shot in the dark, either. I mean, it literally makes a ton of sense to me to read it this way, and IMO really enhances last few episodes.

I'm sure most people won't agree, but whatever.

Because that's one of the first things that jumps out at me as evidence to the contrary of this theory.

I just don't see the Breaking Bad writers putting one character's fantasy inside another's. That's some Inception ass, crossing-the-streams, psychological turducken shit right there.

He said he wanted no ambiguity left in what happens. The "dream" theory is a nice stretch for English majors to play with, but it doesn't have any foundation in the truth.

Just cut from that to a frame of an icy window or something. Let people interpret THAT.

It's just not Gilligan's style. He doesn't really deal in storytelling ambiguity.

Look, I understand why some people don't like this interpretation, but one of the reasons it sits so well with me is that it doesn't crumble under scrutiny. In fact, it gets stronger the more you think about it.

So many little things really do add up.

Even think of how they show Walt die. The cops don't get him. The Nazis don't get hm. Jesse doesn't get him. He gets himself. In his sick mind, the only person who can bring down Walter White is Walter White.

At the risk of being redundant, he:

A) Settles the score with Gretchen and Elliot
B) Figures out a way to get his money to his kids
C) Reconciles with Skyler (and gives her a Get out of Jail ticket)
D) Says goodbye to his daughter and glimpses Flynn
E) Poisons Lydia (and gets the satisfaction of rubbing it in on the phone)
F) Kills all the Nazis (to avenge Hank AND get his own revenge)
G) Rescues Jesse from bondage
H) Dies relatively at peace with himself

He also drives cross country, pops up in restaurants, chats with waitresses, stops at gas stations, finds Badger & Skinny Pete, etc. etc. without anyone noticing him, even though he's the most wanted man in America. (So famous that they even dedicate episodes of Charlie Rose to him.)

I know people have said Walt has had luck in the past, but not THAT much luck.

The thing I love about this interpretation is that it's just ambiguous enough that it allows debate. And what we're debating is which fate we prefer for Walt. The miserable one from Granite State where he dies alone, in hiding, with money he can't spend and a family who hates him and his name being erased from the history books, or the one from Felina where he gets his swag back for one last stand and achieves basically all that he sets out to achieve. The beauty of the debate, though, is not just in thinking about which fate he received, but which fate he deserved.

I also personally think that there are a lot of subtle clues that signal a sort of break from reality. Todd and Lydia never sat face to face in reality. Face to face is a break from reality. This one is minor, but anyone who lives in New England knows you can't tap a window and have every single ounce of snow fall off perfectly. That appears to me to signal a break from reality.

The way he just sort of materializes in places even signals a break from reality in my opinion, especially in Skyler's kitchen. It's almost like he appears out of thin air. (Oh, and last time we saw Skyler she though Walt killed Hank and tried to stab him with a butcher knife. The "reconciliation" makes a lot more sense if it's how Walt imagined it would go...)

Even Lydia just happening to call RIGHT AFTER the shoot out just so Walt can have the satisfaction of rubbing it in is exactly the kind of thing that would happen in his mind. (So is the fact that all the Nazis would die EXCEPT Jack and Todd so that he and Jesse can kill them.)

Shit, event the fact that HEISENBERG is spray painted in his house is just the grossly egotistical way he'd imagine it, because it means he's some kind of a legend like Tony Montana, and not a worthless loser.

To me, Granite State is the realistic, honest ending and Felina is the surreal, sugar-coated fantasy ending. But I guess sometimes fantasies can come true, so if that's what you want, there...

It's literally the best-case scenario (on nearly all fronts) that he could have hoped for in reality.

Walt was an ego maniac but he was also sort of a realist. It's basically his plan as he would have envisioned it playing out, without a hitch, knowing everything that had already transpired. Anything crazy like skipping off to the Cayman Islands with Skyler, Flynn and Holly would have been a nice thought but would have been way too much of a departure to make sense here.

Like I said, I think it's intentionally sort of ambiguous to allow for debate, so in order to work it needed to remain grounded in semi-reality.

I have yet to hear a concrete argument for the fantasy/dream that is based in something that takes place on screen.

It's certainly an interpretation that people who don't want Walt to win will cherish. So it's your projection of the ending you WANT, without having anything actually *there* to root it in, outside of sheer willpower.

Again, it's obviously fun to play these games, especially when you're disappointed with what's actually on the screen when you've loved the show for years and badly wanted something different... I'm an English major. I get it.

But when there's nothing from the author's mouth nor from the actual artistic output that indicates this "fantasy"... yeah. It's just not actually there imo.

>I have yet to hear a concrete argument for the fantasy/dream

Well, like I said above, I think it's at least ambiguous enough that it can be debated. (Is that not why we are here?! To debate our interpretations of art?!) I consider the episode and I see an unprecedented avalanche of amazingly convenient coincidences that dwarfs anything else the show has ever asked us to accept. I also see a fairly significant departure in tone (both in terms of style and content) from the episodes that preceded it.

My interpretation, though, is a little more complex and considered than simply, "I didn't like the ending, so I'm going to pretend it's a dream."

To me, everything that comes after the scene when the cops approach him in a stolen car (!) stuck in the snow, the episode plays absolutely *perfectly* as a defeated, depleted man playing out his final plan in his mind. I mean, it really does play perfectly. To me, every single thing that happens in the episode is exactly how Walt would have imagined it happening. I won't keep beating a dead horse and citing the myriad reasons why I think the interpretation really holds up, but I really do think it does.

>It's certainly an interpretation that people who don't want
>Walt to win will cherish. So it's your projection of the
>ending you WANT, without having anything actually *there* to
>root it in, outside of sheer willpower.

Eh, it's not just for moralist reasons, though that IS probably part of it. It's also probably at least partly a reaction to a show that consistently defied convention trotting out such an insanely far-fetched, cliche-riddled conclusion. (Seth Myers & Amy Pohler could do a Weekend Update REALLY?!? segment for almost everything that happens in the episode.) To me, the place where all of this most the most sense - from a storytelling perspective, from a moralist perspective, from a logic perspective, from a believability perspective - is in the head of Walter.

>Again, it's obviously fun to play these games, especially when
>you're disappointed with what's actually on the screen when

>It's just not actually there imo.

I mean, Ebert is on record as reading the very last scene of Taxi Driver as Travis Bickle's dying fantasy, even though Paul Schrader has explicitly stated that it's intended as a literal, ironic ending. To me, the intent is almost irrelevant. It *can* be read either way, so it really just boils down to however an individual chooses to see it.

Whatever. It's just my interpretation. I think it works and holds up on a whole fucking ton of levels, and although I have no concrete evidence that it was intended, it makes total sense to me regardless. I don't begrudge someone for not agreeing at this point. I actually think (and hope) part of the the point was to make it debatable.

(Not sure you remember this, but we disagreed on whether the ending of TAKE SHELTER was a fantasy, too...)

But I still think that storytelling is a 2-way street and it's fair play for an interpretation to run independent of an author's stated intent. Especially when said author is fond of talking about 'organic storytelling' and 'letting the characters tell the story' – Which is more bullshit than anything, I think, but if that were the case, who's to say Vince didn't fully understand what Walt was trying to tell him?

There are other reasons to not ride with the 'fantasy' theory but strangely Vince G's input doesn't rank too high on that list for me

God only knows Lindelof has sold us loads of bullshit in the past about his work.

But it certainly helps back up the fact that there isn't any indication of fantasy on screen when the author states clearly the conclusion is meant to be definitive.

While Walt is in NH it is cold and snowy, looks to be the dead of winter.

When he is back in NM, it is September 7, as he is celebrating his birthday in the diner. Thinking it took him a few days to get to NM, it was snowing really bad for August in NH.

I don't really believe the theory, but I also don't see them messing up something so simple when they are typically so meticulous.

for him to know exactly how he's being held up with the long chain in the lab makes no sense. i mean he could figure out that Jesse was alive and cooking for the Aryans by force but for him to know the exact set up doesn't add up. Also why would his plan include Jesse killing Todd? That's his revenge based on the torture Todd specifically put him through which Walt has no clue about either.

If this is all supposed to be Walt envisioning his plan (and not a dream or his imagination just running), he wouldn't envision himself discovering that Jesse must be the one good the math based on a conversation with Badger and them. he would just assuming it from having seen the news story and act accordingly.

Either way, whatever helps you enjoy the ep i guess.

divine providence

He made a deal with God (or the gods) to get Walt home (as stated) so he could finish his business (unstated)

And God (or the gods) obliged and provided him a (relatively) clean path to his death

I honestly don't think there's any other way to read this episode

This is the show, after all, that had no problem touching on fate and providence

I realize there's a need to somehow make "logical" sense of the *too clean* sequence of events in the episode, but I think the "it was a dream" shit is an attempt to be *too* logical
