People familiar with Murakami's writing will know why it has taken so long to put to print and Ichikawa hits the notes perfectly. His writing is more about motif and sensation than classic plot resolution. The hardest thing about the movie is that it is short (in the "good movies are never long enough" way of things) but it does resonate for those willing to give it a chance.

I really didn't see anything special in that movie. I thought it was just average. I liked how they showed the underworld of budapest, and its quirky characters but the murder subplot didn't do much for me.

1. Who knew anyone was making movies of that calibre in Hungary? It was all the more pleasant a surprise because it was so unexpected.

2. It was so funny.

3. It managed to be several things at once, so it didn't bother me at all that of the three movies in that movie, one might have been a little less than perfection.

4. That it was filmed entirely in the underground was perfect.

I was lucky enough to see a special screening at which the filmmaker appeared. I strongly support this film, and if you liked this, I strongly urge you to see Hijacking Catastrophe, which is very similar and, imo, even better.

I was there...somewhere in the middle. I was in SF for a board retreat and was not able to go see everything. I had idea I was going to see the Power of Nightmares until I got there. We probably passed one another in the theater. I was with Loni Ding, a cool filmmaker, and some indy media folks.

Kings and Queens had one of my fave performances of the year (M.Amalric is astounding) and the worst (E. Devos was awful), but overall I liked it.
But then again it seems like we don't have the same tastes when it comes to French flicks. If I remember correctly you didn't like The Beat that my Heart Skipped, which I loooved.
Btw, have you seen Regular Lovers, by Philippe Garrel ?

I was lucky enough to have been forewarned, so I knew not to expect much. Low expectations make for great filmgoing.

I agree with your comments on the performances in Kings & Queen, but then that left me disliking the film. Although I am SO mad that there's no soundtrack because I am DYING to get that DJ Mehdi stuff on my mp3 player.

Did you know the only movie on your list we got in Delaware was 3-Iron, and that's only because it came out on DVD?
Let me tell you what sucks about Delaware, there ain't a damn place you can see a damn good movie. We finally got a film Festival (at Rehobeth Beach in the late summer), but they show garbage, "Look what your little cousin Timmy made with his new digital camera!" nonsense. All the cool spots in Philly are packed because the locals get there before us (the nerve) NO ONE is feeling B'more, and ain't nobody driving the 2+ hours to get to D.C., NY for a film.
I have jealous envy for you all. You cats get cool film festivals with interesting movies starring interesting people. We get tax free shopping and Tastykakes. Where's the love?

saw the movie last night. whats good about it is that the main charachters say like 10 words (or maybe less) in the whole movie. But you stil want to see how it all ends.....

Kinda weird cause after watching it for 30mintues i was like, "did he even said a word yet??"

I don't remember if there was a post dedicated specifically to it, but I know it's been mentioned in some of the Asian film posts, Kim Ki-Duk posts, and I reviewed it in my SIFF post, which is in the archives.

and while it wasn't perfect it was insightful and so heartbreaking. It might be from 2004 but a lot of the movies mentioned are as well, or even older. Everyone should watch it.
