"Toy Story 3 (Unkrich, 2010)"
Sun Jun-20-10 04:48 PM by ZooTown74

Opens tomorrow.

I saw it yesterday and it is great.

Takes a little while to get going,
but once it does the comedy and drama both work.

Lots of new characters (some of whom, especially Timothy Dalton, are not given enough material)
and lots of fun.

Bring the kids,
bring the parents,
bring the homeless man who asks you for change.

See it.

But I will be there sometime this weekend

On a related note, it's sad that Disney has decided to take Pixar the franchise route, but it's Pixar, so hopefully they can keep the storytelling magic going...

Went last night at midnight...the sold out crowd was into it the whole flick. I'm kinda tight they wrote off alot of characters from the first 2 but this is my personal favorite of the three and a great way to end the story. This is not better than than the other two but just as good of what preceded it. Like I said this MY favorite of the three.

BTW see it 2D and save the extra $4. 3D does absolutely NOTHING for this movie. Like at all. And check this out:http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=67118

But watching him give up the toys, seeing them all described like that...I was wiping em away, hoping when it was done I'd be able to have a minute or two to stop before I had to walk out of there.

After reading the first two paragraphs, I paused and thought, "What in the blue fuck is he talking about??!!?" Funny how past childhood and lost innocence are two themes absolutely at play in Toy Story 3. And I fail to see how in the world the plot here resembles Transformers 2 in the slightest... maybe someone can inform me.

Also, at least he says, "I admit to simply not digging the toys-come-to-life fantasy (I don’t babysit children, so I don’t have to)," so we can know while reading the review that he's an elitist contrarian asshole who believes animated films are only for kids and that toys in no way play an essential part of a human being's development and imagination.

http://www.nypress.com/article-21357-bored-game.html

Pixar has now made three movies explicitly about toys, yet the best movie depiction of how toys express human experience remains Whit Stillman’s 1990 Metropolitan. As class-conscious Tom Townsend (Edward Clements) tries fitting in with East Side debutantes, he discovers his toy cowboy pistol in his estranged father’s trash. Without specifying the model, Stillman evokes past childhood, lost innocence and Townsend’s longing for even imagined potency. But Toy Story 3 is so besotted with brand names and product-placement that it stops being about the innocent pleasures of imagination—the usefulness of toys—and strictly celebrates consumerism.

I feel like a 6-year-old having to report how in Toy Story 3 two dolls—Sheriff Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen)—try to save a toy box of childhood playthings from either disuse or imprisonment as donations to a daycare center because their human owner, 17-year-old Andy, packs them up as he heads off to college. The toys wage battle with the daycare center’s cynical veteran cast-offs: Hamm the Piggy Bank pig, Lotsa Hugs and Big Baby. But none of these digital-cartoon characters reflect human experience; it’s essentially a bored game that only the brainwashed will buy into. Besides, Transformers 2 already explored the same plot to greater thrill and opulence.

While Toy Story 3’s various hazards and cliffhangers evidence more creativity than typical Pixar product (an inferno scene was promising, Lotsa Hugs’ cannily evokes mundane insensitivity), I admit to simply not digging the toys-come-to-life fantasy (I don’t babysit children, so I don’t have to) nor their inevitable repetition of narrative formula: the gang of animated, talking objects journey from one place to another and back—again and again. It recalls how Tim Burton’s atrocious Alice in Wonderland repeated narrative stasis without exercising the famous line: “It takes all the running you can do just to stay in the same place.” Burton’s omission of that legendary, therapeutic slogan parallels how Toy Story 3 suckers fans to think they can accept this drivel without paying for it politically, aesthetically or spiritually.

Look at the Barbie and Ken sequence where the sexually dubious male doll struts a chick-flick fashion show. Since it serves the same time-keeping purpose as a chick-flick digression, it’s not satirical. We’re meant to enjoy our susceptibility, not question it, as in Joe Dante’s more challenging Small Soldiers. Have shill-critics forgotten that movie? Do they mistake Toy Story 3’s opening day for 4th of July patriotism?

When Toy Story 3 emulates the suspense of prison break and horror films, it becomes fitfully amusing (more than can be said for Wall-E or Up) but this humor depends on the recognition of worn-out toys which is no different from those lousy Shrek gags. Only Big Baby, with one Keane eye and one lazy eye, and Mr. Potato Head’s deconstruction into Dali’s slip-sliding “Persistence of Memory” are worthy of mature delectation. But these references don’t meaningfully expand even when the story gets weepy. The Toy Story franchise isn’t for children and adults, it’s for non-thinking children and adults. When a movie is this formulaic, it’s no longer a toy because it does all the work for you. It’s a sap’s story.

2. Armond White is a contrarian crank, but I'm glad to see someone kick at Pixar's Toy Story franchise with some very valid points, and he's totally right on about Metropolitan.

Arguments could be made that Toy Story 2 is a better overall film that 3, but I think 3 was the most entertaining (and certainly the best animated - they've honed not just the technical elements of texturing and rendering and simulation to an art - but basic things like posing and action).

I spent at least half of the runtime in stitches, between the pig, Ken, and Spanish Buzz.

My friends thought the film was maybe a little dark for a kids film (one said it was like "The Empire Strikes Back" of the Toy Story films), but I felt like while they did go full hog (no pun intended) with the prison break film parody, it wasn't as hard-nosed as it could have been in the hands of another creative team, and it helped that the villains were relatively cute children's toys (though the damaged baby doll was a bit creepy)

Best of all, while I supposed most of us saw the last five minutes coming, the twenty or so minutes preceding it (the entire climax) threw me for loop after loop. And how wonderful that that annoying "THE CLAAAW!!!" joke finally paid off after fifteen years!

They're not getting nominated for Best Picture though; we all know how much the Academy hates all-out comedy. But it is easily the best picture to come out _so far_ this year.

2. Mr. Pricklypants, the classicly trained Porcupine. Very tiny role, by Timothy Dalton did his thang with his limited voice time.

3. That Monkey. Monkeys make everything better. It's just a film fact.

I took a couple of things from it

I think it was just an overall celebration of being open minded and embracing everything around you. It's no coincidence that Day/Night were depicted using both 2D and 3D animation. No one thing is better than the other, they all have awesome qualities to be appreciated. I couldn't help but see it as a metaphor for Pixar's philosophy on animation, even though the message obviously extends well beyond that. But seeing them utilize traditional animation made it seem very clear to me what they were getting at. These guys are inspired by everything around them, and they want us to be, too.

And I missed most of the radio transmission because some assholes behind me were talking, so I probably missed some key stuff. But I could make out that the audio was cutting between this thoughtful speech and some fun music, so I think that was about striking a balance between the intellectual and the emotional. Some of us are morning people, some of us are night people, but we're all just viewing the same world through a different lens and occasionally need to re-calibrate our sense of perspective.

I've loved most of Pixar's shorts and I don't really know where this one ranks, but it definitely comes from a more abstract place than their previous ones. I couldn't help but wonder what the pitch for this thing sounded like... I mean, to be able to translate this concept into a visual medium and do it so clearly and beautifully... It kind of blew my mind.

UPDATE 2-'Toy Story 3' sets worldwide box office abuzz
Sun Jun 20, 2010 2:08pm EDT

* "Toy Story 3" leads worldwide box office

STOCKS | GLOBAL MARKETS | MEDIA | CYCLICAL CONSUMER GOODS

* North American debut sets record for Pixar

* "Jonah Hex" a major flop (Adds ranking for "Jonah Hex" and other films)

LOS ANGELES, June 20 (Reuters) - Welcome back, Woody and Buzz.

After a decade-plus absence from theaters, the animated heroes of "Toy Story 3" sold $153.8 million worth of tickets during their opening weekend at the worldwide box office, according to estimates issued on Sunday by distributor Walt Disney Co (DIS.N).

Moviegoers in the United States and Canada accounted for $109 million, a new opening record for a film produced by Disney's Pixar Animation unit. The old mark of $70.5 million was set by "The Incredibles" in May 2004.

Only two other cartoons have opened to more than $100 million -- "Shrek the Third" with $122 million in 2007, and "Shrek 2" with $108 million in 2004.

Pundits had forecast a $100 million-plus opening for the film, which was universally acclaimed by critics and marks the debut appearance of Mattel Inc's MAT.N Barbie and Ken.

Pixar's perfect record of 11 No. 1 movies also remains intact, as expected. "Nobody's had that kind of success," said Chuck Viane, president of Disney's theatrical distribution arm. "Everything about this movie just oozes success."

Woody the cowboy (voiced by Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear the space ranger (Tim Allen) and their pals in the toy chest starred in Pixar's debut release, "Toy Story," in 1995. The film inaugurated the era of computer-generated animation. They returned in November 1999 with a sequel that opened to $57.3 million in North America.

Ticket prices have risen since then, and "Toy Story 3" received an extra boost from premium pricing for 3D screenings, which accounted for about 60 percent of sales, Disney said.

POSSIBLE JUNE RECORD

If Disney's estimate holds when final data are issued Monday, "Toy Story 3" will rank as the biggest June opener in North America, breaking the record of $108.97 held by last year's "Transformers" sequel.

While "Toy Story 3" was a preordained hit, the film did have to contend with a soft marketplace. Business was weak in May, the start of the lucrative summer moviegoing season, with movies such as "Sex and the City 2" and "Shrek Forever After" underperforming their predecessors.

Sales picked up last weekend when Sony Corp's (6758.T) (SNE.N) "Karate Kid" smashed forecasts with a $56 million debut. The remake slipped to No. 2 with $29 million, taking its 10-day total to $106.3 million.

The international "Toy Story 3" total of $44.8 million included a combined $20 million from Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, despite intense interest there in the World Cup soccer tournament. China kicked in $9.5 million, setting a new record for a cartoon, Disney said.

Also new at the North American box office was the comic-book adaptation "Jonah Hex," which is an early contender for biggest flop of the year.

The movie, starring Josh Brolin as a Western bounty hunter, earned just $5.1 million during its first three days, tying at No. 7 with Lionsgate Entertainment Corp's <LGF.N "Killers.". Pundits had generously forecast an $8 million-$10 million start for the $35 million-plus Warner Bros. release.

"It just didn't work," said Jeff Goldstein, executive VP of distribution at the Time Warner Inc (TWX.N) unit. He said the writing was on the wall about eight months ago when research screenings forced the studio to conduct re-shoots.

In its second weekend, "The A-Team" slipped to No. 3 with $13.8 million, taking the total for the slow-starting action-adventure to $50 million. The Russell Brand comedy "Get Him to the Greek" held at No. 4 with $6.1 million, for a three-week haul of $48 million. "Shrek Forever After" fell to No. 5 with $5.5 million, taking a big hit from "Toy Story 3." Its five-week total stands at $223 million.

"The A-Team" was released by News Corp's (NWSA.O) 20th Century Fox. "Get Him to the Greek" was released by General Electric Co's (GE.N) Universal Pictures. The DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc (DWA.O)-produced "Shrek Forever After" was released by Viacom Inc's (VIAb.N) Paramount Pictures. (Reporting by Dean Goodman; Editing by Paul Simao)

I mean, the praise gets pretty redundant when it comes to Pixar

And I was all kinds of dubious when I saw the teaser for this last year in front of Up

But they delivered once again

Very clever, quite funny, thoroughly emotional and engaging

And yeah, I teared up when Andy showed up at the girl's house and started playing with her

I loved the new additions, and agree that the porcupine got short shrift (but the phone was gold), but there were a lot of characters to service so that was expected. And I also the use of the cuddly bear as the heel was inspired (and Ned Beatty put it down with the voice), as was the notion to turn the story into a prison movie... really solid and creative.

This is why I go to the movies, ladies and gentlemen. Another winner.

The fact that with a few variations, it was the exact same game being played by Andy the first time we met all of the characters.

I would have loved to see the movie in IMAX just for that scene btw.

I disagree that it took a while to get going - That cell phone scene they opened with had me choking up within the first 10 minutes.

I love the details Pixar puts into their films. Mom's van didn't need a yoga sticker on it, the garbage man didn't need to be rocking out, and the items on the daycare shelves didn't need to be so perfectly disheveled as to suggest a real human put them there. But it's those little touches that pull me in.

And I'm probably not going to be the first person to point this out but I love how the toys had 'aged'. Mrs Potato Head lost an eye, Buzz isn't as shiny as he used to be, etc. You get a real sense of how long they've been in that box, longing for Andy to just pick them up and play with them for one last adventure. It's beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.

And that ending... just too perfect. Andy having one last play time, passing the toys on to a worthy heir (please no more sequels though, quit while you're ahead!), and then the clouds... Man.

And as for the comedy? Man they really brought the heat this time. I was HOWLING at Mr Tortilla Head. Ken's fashion show (and handwriting) too. And Mr Prickly Pants, and Chuckles... I can go on and on.

That baby was scary as shit though. But hilarious. I agree that this one got pretty dark, and I didn't know HOW the fuck they were gonna get outta that junkyard situation - but it wasn't *too dark* and I think it fit the overall theme of the film.

As for the visuals I shouldn't even have to tell you it looked phenomenal. The textures have always been good but this time around I was especially impressed with the character animation and posing. Shit was like a ballet.

By the way I noticed they were selling Lotso dolls - any kid who walks out of this movie wanting his own Lotso needs to be reported immediately.

I also loved the opening sequence in general, with all the references to the first. It also looked great in 3D.

Agreed. The garbage man also didn't have to be Sid.

The missing toys broke my heart too. When they said Bo Peep was gone? It wasn't that I particularly wanted to see Bo Peep, but I could hear in Woody's voice how sad that made him.

>And that ending... just too perfect. Andy having one last play

Agreed. Harry at Ain't It Cool went retarded over the end, insisting this can't be the end. I mean... I didn't think Toy Story 3 would be this good, so maybe they can do more. But I'd rather they close the door here.

Thought it was okay. I was really into it for the first 45 minutes, but started losing interest from there on. To me, it felt like it was trying too hard to be sentimental, esp the ending. I'd say it was just okay compared to the last several Pixar flicks.

Day & Night was really cool. Didn't see where it was going at first, but I like how it came together.

I loved this movie, I feel like I had grown up with these toys, and it felt like I had to give them up to a better place. The trash incinerator scene had me tearing up.

They somehow made a PERFECT trilogy, props to Pixar.

I get the feeling that Pixar did that on purpose. The original came out 15 years ago, and if you were 10 then, you are 25 now, which is virtually an eon since that time. And along with age comes that sense of maturity with the weight and impact of the world's realities more deeply entrenched in your psyche.

Just like how Andy and the toys struggle to reconcile growing older with simpler times, I'm guessing Pixar recognizes that their original viewers are experiencing the same things now.

Ross on Toy Story 3: "We're Going for Best Picture!"
Wednesday, November 17, 10
If you’ve seen Toy Story 3‘s emerging "For Your Consideration" campaign, you’ve got an idea of Pixar’s awards show ambition.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Walt Disney Studios Chairman Rich Ross confirms the Lamp’s Best Picture aspirations. "If not this year, and not this movie, when?"

The studio plans to use toungue-in-cheek marketing, poking fun at the fact that no animated film has ever won the Academy’s top prize. "Never Since Shakespeare in Love" reads the above ad. Other winners of the Academy’s top prize, such as Forrest Gump, Titanic and Lord of the Rings, are set to be spoofed.

Ross says Disney plans to approach the campaign differently than they did with Up, which was nominated last year for Best Picture. Unlike Pixar’s 10th, Toy Story 3‘s Best Picture bid will be featured more prominently on forthcoming promotional material.

Your thoughts?
