"Poll question: COTW: SHOCK 2 THE FUTURE"
Sun Dec-27-09 01:36 AM by JRennolds

Damn. That was crazy!

So yeah, I left Philly. I planned on coming home for Christmas and I decided that I was going to stay here, in CO, a few weeks ago.

Here's what transpired...

I quit my job because I hated the commute (MEPHISTO >>>>> SEPTA), it was a "dead-ender", I had no interest in what I was doing, the pay was sub-par and, I absolutely despised my coworkers. Plus, CARS >>>>> BIKES!

I wanted to quit this past summer but I couldn't because I was still caught in a year lease and um.....this economy? Yeah, be grateful for what job you have. One in four Philadelphians are below the poverty level, 11% of folks are unemployed and I needed out, so that I could start working toward finding my career. I had to grow the fuck up!

I was afforded the opportunity to quit because I had since signed to a month-to-month lease, up North. So I chilled as best as I could and on a shoe string budget in NP, before my journey home.

But ay, I found myself hopping out of the frying pan and into the fire. I caught wind that some people were looking for me in the Nasty North Filly area. People that wanted a second "shot" at me; people that kind of knew where I lived.

Having tussled with these particular natives before, I knew that ill shit would pop off. I was told so, by my "Inside Man" (Don't ask)! I was scared on top of already sweating John Law and my neighborhood thugs and junkies. Again, moving to NP? Huge mistake! And now, NINJAS WITH GATS? Fuck, I had to leave. Granted, I bought it all on myself but hey, LESSON LEARNED.

And...I was broke. No income = Ramen Noodle Phun Time! The deck was stacked against me. The last couple of weeks in Philly were scary and I had no phone or money! I couldn't call the 5-0, if I needed to and I could not go out and have fun. I played it cool and did not leave my spot, after the sun vanished...

Long story short, I am back in CO. I miss my 215 friends but I am glad to be home and alive. I will be working for my pops as his assistant, I have wheels again, I can once again eat REAL MEXICAN FOOD, I can be around my family and I am able to stare at the beautiful Rockies each morning. All shit that I took for granted before.

VINI VIDI VICI.

So for now, I will be getting my comics once a month....and living in my ma's basement! Hooray. Cliche I know, but it's like moving from the ECONOLODGE into the Ritz Carlton. I have a real bed again and I don't have to live with crusty roommates.

So yeah, JR is coming back on a tiger!

Holler.

Not sure who took home the crown last week. Lots of strong material but nothing that really blew me away. Heeeeeere we go The Ruler

Incredible Herc #139 - As dope as it is to see modern Marvel heroes go up against their ancient mythical counterparts, I felt like the characters were a little too aware of the meta implications of what should have just been an awesome fight scene. Under no circumstances should Wolverine ever use the word "archetype". Other than that though, another solid issue. B+

Irredeemable #9 - Things continue to go from bad, to worse, to completely fucked. WHY AREN'T YOU CHEERING? A-

Detective Comics #860 - Not to sound like a broken record but Weezy Threezy continues to murder this book, and Rucka's presence on the book continues to grow stronger. With any other artist this still would have made for a decent origin story I suppose, but the way the art evolves with the character is just plain genius. A

Crossed #8 - Not as good as the last issue but overall I feel like this book is still much better than it has any right to be. I could have sworn this was just going to be The Walking Dead + Dick Jokes, but now I'm actually invested. B

Criminal - The Sinners #3 - This felt like the strongest issue yet in this volume, and I feel like it's only going to get better from here. I think it was Shock who said Tracy is the best character to come out of this series, and I agree. A-

Secret Warriors #11 - Just because the book is called 'Secret' Warriors, it doesn't excuse the fact that a year into the series we don't even know who the main characters are supposed to be. mmm.... DRRRRROOOOP! D-

Ex Machina #47 - I'm at least a week late on this one, but let me just say it was head squishingly good. A

Uncanny X-Men #519 - I never thought I'd see the day where Scott Summers was enough to carry an X-Book for me. Though overall the last couple of issues have just been OK. C+

Amazing Spider-Man #616 - The art on this arc has been amazing. And of course Van Lente didn't disappoint either, though the Sandman multiple personality reveal felt a bit hasty. All in all a nice quick yarn and a damn good revamp of a classic, and somewhat corny Spidey villain. A

Fantastic Four #574 - Hickman wouldn't be the first writer to burn out after a few solid issues of FF, but I'm holding out hope that this isn't the case. Still though - the party was corny, the Future Franklin felt a little 'been there, done that' although it did set up some interesting sounding things for forthcoming issues. Franklin getting his powers back could be interesting if its handled well. And yeah, the art was pretty weak. It felt like a low-rent Hitch impression, and worse yet all the children were drawn to look like creepy, tiny adults. When half the book is a little kid's birthday party, that's a problem. C+

Captain America Who Will Wield the Shield - Furthermore, who will give a shit? A: Not me. C-

Blackest Night #6 - NOPE! Waiting for that shit to actually come out first. You godless heathens.

The thing about the art that stood out to me, minus everyone looking like the mole man, were the parts where it was blatantly unfinished. Someone forgot to break out their eraser in the panels when Franklin first enters the party area and where Valeria appears in front of Future Franklin.

Fun is the new gritty

i give this an A++. Three plausible, major new villains established in a series to the proto-ganist (c) that star wars review is ALSO a bad guy?? ONLY JAILBAIT CAN SAVE US.

Down by law. Yeah, there's not much more to say. Wait, yes there is. I actually care about Alice now and want to see where Ruck Raida is taking it. A+

Here's where you yell: BRUDAWG is boring me with this one. I give it a B...with this disclaimer that I think this will read a whole lot better as a trade/whole story. I may drop it with the idea of following it as a trade later on.

>Fantastic Four #574 -

You spent a lot of time saying "it sucked." I agree. D+

>Captain America Who Will Wield the Shield - Furthermore, who
>will give a shit? A: Not me. C-

Cmon, this was BRUDAWG getting Cap back on track after the atrocity of Cap Reborn. Bucky and Steve care for each other!! Steve getting set up to be the post-Siege director of SHIELD!! This was an A.

REBORN was an atrocity before the introduction of, The MODOK Squad and before, DICK DASTARDLY DOOM took SKULL, off of the table. I think that, DOOM and ZOLA are running game on the, SKULL. All just a few issues, free of universal continuity and crackpot retcons that don't *really* make any sense.

Nightly News - crack, even if you have trouble cracking into it right away. The news is out to get us, and The Voice shows us the way out.

Pax Romana - the Gene Pope gets a history lesson: Time travel, badassery, and changing the world for the better. We think.

Transhuman - the funniest of the three, mostly a series of interviews documenting the evolution of the fiercely competitive bionics industry.

REd Mass for Mars - kind of like Irredeemable if the Plutonian had turned his back on humanity instead of turning his wrath on it. But then what does he do when an alien invasion that'll clobber Earth is on the horizon? We still don't know, b/c Hickman's too busy writing Marvel crap to finish this one up.

I was down on Secret Warriors from jump - but look at what the guy is doing: trying to make the whole SHIELD thing fresh.

Okay, tall order, and really all he had to work with is a few throwaway characters from Secret Invasion and Nick Fury. And Fury shines... but the rest of it? Apparently, not so much.

Fantastic Four started off great, but since that first arc? Meh. but I think he's a great 'big ideas' guy - and the two/three 'meh issues were small ideas that he *needs* to write because a) that's what people seem to want, and b) his stated purpose is to emphasize the 'family' aspect of the Fantastic Four. So there's bound to be some cheese in there.

I think my personal plan, after this last issue, is to hold off unless one of you guys gives it a huge and reliable thumbs up. Maybe take it on an arc-by-arc basis. We'll see, but I'm more cautious about his Marvel stuff than I was last year.

Also of note: all the Image stuff (as well as his Top cow pilo season one-shot, The Core), Hickman was working in a world/universe of his own creation. Could well be that the universal continuity aspect just doesn't work for his style...

I mean, I'm pulling for the guy, but after dropping all the Jason Aaron books rather quickly, I'm hedging my bets on guys who do their own stuff great but then sign a Marvel exclusive right out of the gate w/o doing any piece work for the majors.

Yep. And I gotta say, the book always maintains a cool vibe to it that makes me *want* to read. But the story just doesn't seem to have any center to it, and only 1 out of the dozens of characters featured in it genuinely interest me.

Yeah, I think his weakness on the book have been those quiet, character moments... ie the corny "family" aspect of things which like it or not are an integral part of the FF formula. I feel like once the next true story arc kicks off, Hickman will get to focus on those 'big ideas' of his and the book will be good again. That arc by arc idea isn't bad...

>Also of note: all the Image stuff (as well as his Top cow pilo
>season one-shot, The Core), Hickman was working in a
>world/universe of his own creation. Could well be that the
>universal continuity aspect just doesn't work for his style...

I used to think this was a plea cop but I'm beginning to come around on it. I mean, writing for a 60+ year old character for the big 2 is a bizarre ass set of circumstances to write under. In more ways than any of us are probably even aware of. Strange that it's the only viable way to make a living at it. Imagine if the only way to make it in the music industry was through karaoke (Please pretend I made this brilliant analogy 15 years ago when there was still a 'music industry')

>I mean, I'm pulling for the guy, but after dropping all the
>Jason Aaron books rather quickly, I'm hedging my bets on guys
>who do their own stuff great but then sign a Marvel exclusive
>right out of the gate w/o doing any piece work for the
>majors.

Yeah I'm not really checking for Aaron outside of Scalped either. The Wolverine stuff of his I read wasn't too bad either, it's just that it was... Wolverine. I hate to say it because I love all the classic characters, but a lot of these guys have a hell of a lot more to offer than what the Big 2 can give them.

On the flip side of the coin, I never cared too much for Fraction's indie work so I'm finding his Marvel stuff to be relatively solid. Van Lente is the only 'new' writer that I'm seriously feeling, which is funny because if you look at his big indie title Action Philosophers, there's really no indication there that the guy could write a kick ass Spider-Man comic.

Some people enjoy sophisticated, slow boiling noir, and some people prefer loud, spandex-clad bromances. And probably bathe in Axe Body Spray and have nicknames for their abs. The point is, who am I to judge?

That would tell someone they need to have some sort of familiarity with noir in order to "get" Criminal. Fuck that. The issue bored you, as some issues in the past have bored me. I ain't writing the shit a noir pass just because I enjoy the genre. If anything, my (vague) familiarity with noir has hurt my reading experience of Criminal, because I know the hero's always gonna get screwed and the women can never be trusted. The stories have more impact when the reader doesn't check his optimism at the door.

To thank you for the Secret Satan. You killed it. Absolutely. I cracked up the moment I saw the story that came with it.

It inspired me to consider putting a more personal touch on my secret satan next year.

PUERTO RICANS, got angry Michael. And I was very uncomfortable being the only white dude in my hood. People looked at me as if I had money and things were said. I grew paranoid.

I also said some shit and people caught wind of my remarks. Basically, I asked "that's all you got?" They said, "no Motherfucker, we got more and you have pissed in the wrong pool." Threats were made directly and also through pals. I refused to take any chances because I KNEW that the people I made mad, did not play. I saw first hand and heard who these people were down with. And one of the dudes that got me told a friend that he knew where I lived and there were still scores to settle. People were looking for me and had passed through my block and asked around.

I was done taking chances. Hell, I was already mugged and beat down. The desperate don't care...

But yeah, I am glad to be back. If anything, I feel a sense of stability here. I also have a safety net. Living with the folks sucks though. I am in vagrant mode, going back and forth between the two spots.

but I mean, really, what the fuck were the Forces of Good thinking sending a Jason Campbell let team after the Secret Cel? I went ahead and played with an injured kicker just to style on y'all (obviously not because I didn't realize my kicker was injured...)

here, now, I present an artist's rendition of my approach to the league this year, during which I became the inaugural PTP FF champion:

http://eter22.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/deadshot.jpg

you all suck, a fucking Reggie Bush - Darren McFadden backfield styled on y'all, only in this league did I snag Austin Miles after - like - two monstrous games and I was bored or probably hungover and watching Sportscenter on a Monday night and decided to pick him up off waivers, you could give Batman the whole offseason to prep his shit and my monster of a team still would have knocked his squad off with the draft "strategy" cooked up during the heat of the draft, I really hope Yahoo! doesn't fiddle with the scores before tomorrow morning, and this is the first, and probably last time I will be fantasy champion of anything, at least until we get some more nerds to be in a league with us next year, amen, and good night

Jason Campbell performed well ever since I picked him up. He would look awful but he'd always give at least 12 points. When I need him he completely nuts up.

I came in needing my kicker to get nine points. So I found myself in the weird fantasy position of wanting a team to lose but wanting a player on that team to do well.. and I got screwed over.

I lost by two points! TWO!

ARRGH, and there's no way I'll ever be able to get a team with Desean, Moss, and Chris Johnson again.

Of course I could've won if I started either Berrian, or Felix Jones over Britt I would've won as well.. but.. DAMN DAMN DAMN!

But for starters, try Villains United and the first (Simone) Secret Six mini if you haven't read them yet. you might have to look under Inifinite Crisis for that Villains United, but it's worth a read. (There was also a Villains United IC one-shot that was really good too.)

You could also check for some of Simone's run on Birds of Prey if you haven't read that yet. Good stuff.

My dad took me to see Burl Ives live in concert when I was really really little (as his dad took him) all I remember is the man was wearing all white, and at one point during the show took a sip of amber liquid out of a glass tumbler. He leaned toward the mic and said "apple juice" and all the grown ups started laughing. I didn't get it. I vaguely remember a few songs of his I really liked that I need to track down. If there's an album (more likely a collection?) of his you'd recommend or something, let me know.

...you're pretty much getting fucked in terms of presents if your bornday falls anywhere between Thanksgiving & President's Day.... Folks are usually broke from giving Christmas presents, so they end up either combining the two occasions or giving you two cheaper (usually lamer) gifts during that time period. In response to Reply # 0

saw a sign up - buy a trade of $12 or more and get a free Marvel trade (of their choice, but they basically showed me the box and said 'What would you like us to choose for you?)

So I got my Blackest Night #6, and I grabbed an early Van lente book that's apparently had film rights sold (Cowboys & Aliens), btu that was only $4.99. They didn't have Goodbye Chunky Rice in, so I flipped through what was available and got something I can't even remember the name of but it looked great, had an intro by Alan Moore, and was apparently included on that big '100 Best Graphic Novels of All Time' list a few years back.

And so I got vol. 3, hardcover, of the Bendis/Maleev Daredevil run - FREE.

(I asked the clerks, and they basically said Marvel had given the shop a bunch of free stuff over the past year, and this was their way of passing the benefit on to their customers. So - thanks, Marvel!)

In response to Reply # 0
Wed Dec-30-09 03:05 PM by JRennolds

I love the word "Cluster-Fuck". It sounds funny and extremely dirty. I don't know what one is but ay, I don't know what a SECRET WARRIORS comic is either.

I am loving the feel of this book and the cast is intriguing enough BUT shit is unnecessarily complex and convoluted, too early on in the book's run. Too many elements and no clear direction...

I want to see the characters initially introduced, find their way via a cohesive story. I want the book to find its focus and progress naturally from there. Once this occurs, then you can add on all the luggage. SW, is like an omelette that does not make sense (MMMMMM OMELETES).

Hickman, in the kitchen and making an omelette:
"Why yes, I will grate some Nerf football material into my sushi-stuffed eggyolk omelette, pour the flour-thickened mass into a squash shell, cook it in the oven @ 350 degrees for 45 minutes and BAM!. It will be the most delicious Honduran Omelette ever. I shall call my dinner snack, SECRET WARRIORS!"

In short, pretty pictures + huge concepts yet, an absent story! I should love this book.

B+

72. "remember the first issue of Secret Warriors?"
In response to Reply # 66

remember how it had a super team of young unknowns recruited by Nick Fury with a nice big page spread of said super team getting into a battle with the nefarious H.A.M.M.E.R., and the young chick playing the uncertain team leader working hard to meet Nick Fury's expectations?

we had a wild card character, a sympathetic fat nerd character, a father figure, an unrequited romance, a young boy god still discovering his powers -- shit was looking like A-grade super team shit

then in the next issue we introduce the super villains -- really dastardly and scary as hell, all united in their evilness. quickly, one chops a chick's arm off, and I'm sitting here thinking, "this is going to be a sweet super team square off here, I really don't give two shits how flimsy the back story is, I just need some New Mutants with espionage type shit going on here and I'll be good."

then?

well, what then? I have no idea. We've gone all over the place. We go issues without the super team. The villains are constantly changing and for some reason Norman Osborne and Bullseye were momentarily involved. Nick Fury stays doing TOP SECRET shit that makes no damn sense. I'm confused if he's the boss or what is going on, and what seemed like an absolute no-brainer of a premise is now this fucking train wreck. It seemed like they had set up a teeball stand for Hickman to take a swing at, and somehow he struck out by fouling off his third bunt attempt.

I *want* it to be good so bad, but it just *isn't*

was that a little bit of what seems like a lazy plot point?

sure, but I don't care. the whole story is pretty figurative, so to just make a big bang of a finale with lots of bad ass shit with colored rings happening, I'm all for it. this is what I signed on for. if you are the type of person who secretly harbors dislike in your heart for the Care Bear stare aspect of it all, I can see getting a little disheartened here. if you are, like me, a person who things superhero comics are about epic events, colors, costumes, and heroic deeds, then this is fucking awesome.

the only legit gripe I could see is that Barry as the Blue Deputy doesn't totally work for, and the inclusion of Wonder Woman feels a bit like an attempt to redress the criticisms regarding her minor role in Final Crisis, but I mean she is an amazon and the Star Sapphires are basically amazons, so what are you gonna do?

but, to me, it didn't really advance the plot at all, and I still have some major questions. we could know more about the nature of nekron, and for this secret the guardians have been keeping has been teased way too long.

also, and this is big for me, i *really* need some exposition as to why all of this is happening on Earth. if you're a full on GL nerd like most of us, you can guess, because Ganthet called Earth the most emotionally rich planet at the end of Dat Nestro War. but i want it fleshed out, given some meat, with Nekron offering a fuller explanation of who/what he is and why he wants Earth so bad.

I guess my complaint is that as a three year GL reader who went back and read *everything* since Johns started, I really want the story to be completely fleshed out and finished. i know that's an unrealistic expectation in an event comic, so I'm not real mad, and I'm sure the ending is going to feature some awesome battle moments. but right now i'm a little wistful, because all of the War of Light and BN has been moving way too fast for me since Tan started his Ruinfest 2009 World Tour on the Fleezy storyline.

plus the splitting of the rings is, to me, a little cheesy and unnecessary. there have got to be a lot of available rings from recently deceased lanterns of all colors out there. have ganthet summon them, rather than introduce something that has me raise the brow.

80. "well, have you seen the "The New Guardians" cover?"
In response to Reply # 75

I mean, it's the same image as the postcards that my shop has hyping Blackest Night, but that right there -- and Ganthet's admission that he tweaked the Book of Oa because he foresaw BN -- all point to the fact that this might END UP being a big ass event in the long run of the continuity, but in the space of one issue, yeah, it was mainly about how bad ass it was to have the Atom drop a nok on us. I'm fine with that. It isn't the finale YET, it's just the set up for the finale, and making a bunch of DC staples into Lanterns is pretty sweet -- sound and fury ... signifying nothing? we can't actually say until later.

>but, to me, it didn't really advance the plot at all, and I
>still have some major questions. we could know more about the
>nature of nekron, and for this secret the guardians have been
>keeping has been teased way too long.

the Guardians always have secrets, and the tagline at the end of this one was hyping Black Hand in the next one, so the way I see it -- this is the set up issue for the epic forces of good, and next one is set up for the epic forces of bad, and then we get a kick ass finale with long term implications for the GLU.

>also, and this is big for me, i *really* need some exposition

cuz all the heroes are there. they'll invent some kind of reason, but I mean it's because all the heroes are there. remember the first BN, which was mainly a loving elegy to the richness of the DCU and all the heroes and villains that have been created through the years? that's why we're there, we're going to learn something about Black Hand, and Nekron will hopefully make more sense. Give it an issue, son!

I've read *everything* Johns did, too, and I've been going back and reading everything post Sinestro War to prep for this event and everything. What I'm looking for is an end to the rein of the Guardians and some interesting tensions on the other side as the new corps establish their niche in the universe. It won't necessarily "resolve" anything, as much as it will reshape the GLU and create a new landscape to carve stories into. I'm not sure what "resolution" you were really thinking was coming...

He just has a strange things about depending on us to do right by him balanced against a healthy distrust of us.

For instance, he always complains about certain comics that we didn't order many of, but then refuses to put them on his holds list for reasons I don't understand. We'd order more if people told us they needed them.

Then he always wants his subtotal before tax just to make sure we're not overcharging him, even though every third week his total turns out to be wrong, which means we both have to count again. He usually buys a TON of shit, which means we have to appease him because he brings lots of business, but he's also usually there very early on Wednesdays, stays until close to 11:30, then hold up the line from all the lunch break folks just trying to get their one or two comics and be out.

He's also very vocal about if he doesn't like the music we're playing. He called a Bon Jovi song "disco music" on day.

He managed to drop 30 bones during a skip week, even after our 25% sale.

The real killer is David L, though. This guy's holds list says simply, "Amazing Spider-man, Incredible Hercules, ALL DC/WILDSTORM/VERTIGO TITLES AND OGNS"

He only comes in the store like four times a year. We hold shit for him indefinitely.

how come everyone isn't hiring JH Williams to draw everything?

besides that, Ruckdawg straight making me care about a crap gimmick character. kudos to him. I would totally read a regular Batgirl book with this protagonist. he's managed to create a lot of nuance inside a pretty straight forward story.

He takes too long? I imagine he had quite a few issues in the can before anything was solicited.

Kate, is a great character that has really been fleshed-out BUT I am in this for Rucka's Montoya. I have loved Renee, ever since GCPD. I relish her evolution as a DCU lead.

In response to Reply # 93

it's not exactly a bubbling cauldron of creativity that birthed this character, it was just an effort to get some T+A on the hero side of the Batman universe.

Rucka has added some real complexity beyond the rather simplistic creative underpinnings, thought, so good for him

Batgirl is another character in another book by another creative team that we don't really rave about here.
