"Men: Let's talk about Rom-Coms"

Some of us are married or otherwise boo'd up, and are thus contractually obligated to watch the occasional rom-com. With very few exceptions, these are unbearable shitfests. This thread is those exceptions.

Love Actually, has to hold that number 1 spot. It actually works as a piece of cinema. It's well written and acted, and the characters behave (mostly) like real people. Also, "About a Boy" and Notting Hill. Basically, I'm saying that your rom-com has a chance at not sucking if it takes place in England and stars Hugh Grant...Bridget Jones not withstanding.

The one genre H'wood used to be able to make better, faster, and cheaper than anyone is now nothing more than a proverbial dump.
If you can swing it, try to watch some of the '40s and '50s rom-coms, some of the best films Hollywood ever made.

I don't think there's a better rom-com in recent years that's better than WHEN HARRY MET SALLY. Well made, well acted, funny, doesn't belittle your intelligence. After that, it's a steep fall.
THE NOTEBOOK - God is it "girly," but if you gotta make up for doing some dumb shit, then you gotta put this one on.
LOVE, ACTUALLY - I really like this one. Your previous point about Hugh Grant stands.
4 WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL - See above.
LOVE AFFAIR - It's the Warren Beatty/Annette Benning remake of AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER. I'm a sucker for those "autumn in New York" movies.
THE WEDDING DATE - I like it for no discernable reason.
LOVE & BASKETBALL - One of the better "late '90s urban romances."
LOVE JONES - see above.

And yeah, I'm hard pressed to think of any others.

it's When Harry Met Sally. it's not just genre defining, it's a great movie. if you can't enjoy it, loosen up. it's universal in the best way a la the Pixar movies even the eliterati like to hype up.

is Celeste and Jesse Forever a rom com though? that screams more romantic drama with some random and uncomfortably weird ass comedy bits thrown in, etc.

Instead of spending 90 minutes watching Rashida Jones act like a lovable screwup in an attempt to win back Andy Samberg, the movie actually deals with real-esque emotions and somewhat grown-up characters

cause, though im not on board the Shida love train (how can she be the dullest beige girl evar? with her family pedigree? she should exude edge for reals...), i've been hearing good things about this movie and I do want to check it out.

and, I digs Ari Gaynor and Chris Messina...bam

formulaic but well done. Carell and Binoche are perfect for their parts, the family and single dad bits are funny, and the premise that

a.) Dane Cook is dating your dream girl
b.) Dane Cook is your brother

is awesome.

Because it's as much a music discussion as it is a rom-com. That and Cusak excels at that kind of thing, with the notable exception of Serendipity, which was horrible.

And as hack and cliche as it was, America's Sweethearts wasn't half bad either.

Because the romance isn't with a handsome fellow (though the movie has one of those) but rather with her career. And it's got Harrison Ford acting like a total grump, which is a swell bonus.

It's undoubtedly a romantic comedy, so I remember wondering if Harrison Ford was the love interest. Because the successive reactions of "ewww" and "nicely done for his character" aren't the kind of things that I imagine get folks to the theater, that's not going to work.

And even if Patrick Wilson (who I rather like after "Young Adult", but whose very willing to default to "wallpaper") was in the advertising for it, I don't remember it - and that's kind of his thing.

Anyhow, there wasn't a lot of romance to give us in the actual film. And the actual point of the movie, while not actually complex, is actually slightly eccentric.

Maybe she reminds me of the obnoxious pretty girl in high school, the dearth of acting talent (which is forgivable given the genre), how much I don't like the movies she's in. I don't think it's any one thing, and I don't think it's all justified. But every time I see her, I get annoyed.

It's a rom-com but it's also an action film. In the FIRST SCENE, Colin Farrell flirts with and then punches an unsuspecting woman in the face in order to effect a small robbery.

I keep saying this: It has something for everyone.

I also think you should check out City Island, although by "check out" I IN NO WAY mean "watch the trailer". They put the funniest moment in the trailer and it only works if you're not suspecting it, so DON'T watch the trailer.

City Island was (I think) the only movie that Mr W and I have ever seen together that we both liked for essentially the same reasons.

I'd suggest removing this as a spoiler if it hadn't been out for so long, but yeah, that really set the tone for the film. Goes through a wide range of emotions but never loses it's focus.

In response to Reply # 0

I don't know if any of you have seen this, but this is a great rom-com. It's got Hope Davis as the woman looking for love and finding a bunch of not-so-great guys. PSH is in this (in one of his early roles) as Davis' slacker boyfriend who never found a cause he didn't like.

The story is genuine and is kind of meloncholy, but the romance between the guy and Davis seems sincere and touching.

I would highly reccomend thiz even if you don't like Rom-coms.

I don't remember if someone has mentiones Bridesmaids, but that movie was awesome too.

I'm also trying to figure out just how much, if at all, having a "handsome" lead matters to straight guys who watch these movies

Woody Allen's thoughts on love and relationships aren't any less relatable, insightful, or entertaining because of his looks

I don't believe his looks matter to the straight guys watching the movies

I didn't feel like wasting two posts back-to-back

And as far as the "cynical" charge, some of his romantic comedies (but not all) have characters that have a jaundiced view, but that view is hard-earned and the result of relationships that went sour. That's more "real" than it is "cynical," and as such they absolutely should be included in the list of romantic comedies for men.

And to categorize ALL of his romantic comedies as "anti-" is kinda... ehh, I dunno...

Remember rom coms are actually made for women
So while it's nice you guys like them
You should like the ones that actually count as rom coms
Otherwise just go back to action/comics
And stick to stereotype

of one of the funnier comments I ever remember hearing.

Out of context it's probably less funny since you guys obviously don't know the kid who said it ... but a hilarious kid I played high school basketball with and later smoked weed with here and there, picked me and one of my best friends up one day shortly after that movie was released to pick up a bag and go smoke somewhere. This kid is, like, the most naturally happy human being I've ever been around. There's nothing on earth outside of like death and poverty that doesn't make him happy. So exciteable, such a nice kid.

So we get in the car and we hadn't seen him for a while so my buddy and I are like "Dickie (Rich was his name) --- how u been kid?!"

Dickie: "aw man I'm great. hey have you guys seen Mr. and Mrs. Smith yet? Just saw it last nite. Man...barring classics like The Princess Bride and Goonies, it's probably the best movie I've ever seen."

I mean...just a classic line from beginning to end. Again, my apologies if the lack of context in knowing the kid makes it less funny, but I think it's hilarious either way.

Charade is my favourite film of all time. Okay, not strictly a Rom/Com more a Rom/Com/Thriller or as it is often described the best Hitchcock film Hitchcock never made.

The best on screen chemistry of all time.

In response to the author of the post, Love, Actually really? One of the all time worst films. For Real! Notting Hill not far behind it. I like Four Weddings and a Funeral a lot though.

In response to Reply # 113

Is the Break-Up considered a romantic comedy? Or is Up in the Air not a rom-com because the twist makes it darker?

My wife's argument is that it isn't a romantic comedy because it isn't romantic - all the romantic parts were fake once you know what the twist is. Now that I think about it, she's probably right.

My wife also usually falls asleep 2/3's of the way into a rom-com (which we usually are watching on Netflix because she wants to see it, even though I know that by the end I'll be watching by myself or switching to SportsCenter and she'll be sleep), so I didn't even think she'd make it to the twist in Up in the Air.

Rom Coms are like candy -- they're sweet, they have no nutritional value, there's definitely better options out there, eating too much makes you fat and lonely lol, but people can't resist the sugar all the same.

just the scenes of people describing the pain of losing their jobs moves Up in the Air out of the "fun, escapist" vein of rom coms that I think is integral to how they succeed. cuz that's part of the key, too. reasonable women are well aware that rom coms are just escapist fantasies, but they're FUN! escapist fantasies that tell us something useful about relationships via humor when done well.

so yeah, Up in the Air has too much of a real emotional center to fit the vein of light-hearted, escapist romantic comedy.

about the fact that the overall tone of the movie BEFORE the twist was much darker than an average romantic comedy.

i'm having trouble parsing this one as well
(technicaly it works under my tongue in cheek guideline clooney s a handsome ass dude)

but i feel as thought peopel dont want to put it there because its a very good movie
and rom-coms have so many genre/gender limitations
this is why people dont want to put it in that category
but technically you are right
