"Talking During Movies In The Theatre"

We're all very testy about this so I wanted to share with you all a GREAT experience I had yesterday.

I went to see The Wind That Shakes The Barley (great movie, by the way) and it turns out you really have to concentrate on that motherfucker because of the extremely heavy Irish accents (for that reason, it might be one you want to wait to see until it's out on dvd). In fact, before the film even started, someone from the theatre announced that (i) the accents are really heavy; (ii) there's a lot of violence and torture; and (iii) the print they had had some scratches, and if that was a problem for anyone, they'd be happy to return their money.

Not a problem for me.

Lights go down, trailers, etc. At that point, two women come into the theatre and sit down two seats away from me. One promptly starts digging in her purse and rattling those plastic bags that are supremely noisy. I wait through the trailers, thinking that if it goes on during the movie itself, I'll ask her to stop. That part calms down. The movie starts. About five minutes into it, the rattling has slowed but not completely ceased, and the woman nearest me has spoken to her companion twice in a normal tone of voice. So I lean over to her and say, in the most pleasant voice I can muster, "Please don't talk during the movie!"

She says, "I was just saying that this movie might be too violent for me."

Aha!

"You can get your money back," I tell her.

"YOU CAN?" she fairly shouts.

"Yes," I say. "They announced it before you got here."

Rattle rattle, whisper whisper and they're gone. No interruptions for the rest of the film.

I HIGHLY recommend this strategy to anyone and everyone. lol

But few people will be as accomodating as said woman. The fact that a movie could be "too violent" for her speaks volumes. That tells me that she's fairly nice and rational, much unlike people in theaters in my city.

but generally speaking, if I ask people using those words and in the absolutely nicest tone of voice I can muster, I get okay results. I've noticed that people who snap or hiss or yell at others in the theatre usually just get abuse, lol. So I try to make it a "We're All On The Same Team" kind of thing.

This woman was actually kind of old and batty. I think she was with her daughter and this was a mother's day outing.

By the time someone's annoyed me enough to say something, I'm usually past the point of being able to, in the immortal words of George Costanza, "de-sour and sweeten." I always say something polite like "Would you please stop talking?" or "Would you mind keeping it down?" but I have so much trouble taking the edge out of my voice. lol

But then there was the woman sitting behind me, snapping her gum through about 2/3 of "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster," to whom I said something to the effect of "Are you kidding me with this?", lol. Then I sat there praying she wouldn't throw her gum in my hair, while she continued to snap away. Finally she got up and left. Sheesh.

in part because I think that it's common sense that you should not rattle bags, snap gum, or hold conversations during movies, so I think you have to be either brain-damaged or DOING IT ON PURPOSE TO PISS ME OFF.

So it's all an act when I'm pleasant about it.

Damn, during the film festival, in a really quiet moment during a long film, a filmgoer (whose voice I recognized, haha, a film festival friend but not a friend otherwise) *shouted* "WOULD YOU TURN THAT THING OFF!!!!"

lol

I mean, you could tell that it had been bothering him for at least an hour before he let loose. That's why I think it's also important to nip it in the bud. Otherwise, you'll just sit there and fret and fume and you won't see the movie.

I couldn't believe it when they just left. If I hadn't told her to shut up, they would have sat there and talked about how violent the movie was for 2 hours, lol.

I especially love it when someone's slooooowly unwrapping a piece of candy during a quiet scene, thinking they're being quiet. Just get it over with! Or, you know, couldn't you wait for a loud scene?

I know, right? I have a cold and I have to blow my nose occasionally. Before the movie started, I put a bunch of kleenex in my pocket so I wouldn't have to fumble for them or even take them out of their little plastic container during the movie. AND I waited until there was noise on screen to blow my nose.

I don't know why you and I know this and others don't.

But from now on, I'm just gonna tell people to go get their refunds, lol.

A SIFF staffer is always there to introduce a film, and remind people to turn off their cellphones...not just put them on vibrate, but silence them and put them away so no one has to see the glowing blue screens. But I especially like it that at least one of the staffers likes to tell the audience to unwrap their candy now. That usually gets some laughter and applause. lol

>I don't know why you and I know this and others don't.

Probably because we take our film-viewing more seriously than most. I think a lot of people think of going to a theatre as a social event more than actually *watching and listening* to a film.

If only that were an option at all movies.

the first time I ever heard anyone say "all the way off, not just vibrate", at least to remember it, was before Into Great Silence. Graham Leggatt, the SFFS ED, introduced the film and *explained* that light is as disturbing as sound, and I thought I might be in love.

Then when I went to lavish praise at Roger Garcia last week (he's our asian cinema programmer and I think he's a god), he and Leggatt were accessible because they were standing outside a theatre smoking. That's when I KNEW I was in love.

I think SIFF needs to borrow him. I'm very disappointed that there are relatively few Asian offerings this year. I was about to bitch about there being waaaaay too many Germany films until I realized that's the country they're focusing on this year, lol. Lots of stuff from Australia, Russia and France, too.

I don't think Roger Garcia has a hand in it but it has a very good reputation nonetheless.

The thing about Garcia is that he's like good friends with all these directors. So he gets access to films that other people don't. I was complimenting him on his choice of Goodbye Dragon Inn and he said, "oh yeah, wasn't that funny? Did you see the original? That was made by my friend King Hu." I'm like whoa your FRIEND?

And I mean, the whole conversation was like that. And then I suspect the reason we got those couple of films that I really wanted you to see that SIFF didn't get (Ad Lib Night and The Old Garden) is because of him. I mean, I know he brought both of those to SF.

It just clicked, where I'd heard his name before. He executive produces a series called "Cinema AZN" for AZN TV. I've caught bits and pieces of it. Maybe I should start recording it.

what's your favorite this? what's your favorite that? Like he was being interviewed by an 18 - 22 year old male. Which I guess he was, lol. I would've smacked anyone who asked me those questions in that order, lol.

But now I'm worried that he didn't think I was paying close enough attention to him when we were talking.

His favorite food answers made me hungry for Asian street food. I've gotta rustle up something to stir-fry with noodles for dinner. I really need to go to Trader Joe's, but I'm lazy.

...I can't stand people who are compelled to tell bad jokes. The last time this happened, I leaned over to the guy and said, "If you're going to make jokes, make them funny". Then he said to himself, "I think my jokes are funny".

I yell out jokes in the theater, for films I consider appropriate, but if the first one flops I shut the fuck up.

There is nothing worse than someone who gets a laugh at his first ad lib comment and then proceeds to take that as carte blanche for more dumb jokes.

I have a very simple way of determining whether it's appropritate to make jokes: if people are enjoying the film, I shut up. Even if they're enjoying the film and I hate it, I shut up.

relevance, and the PERFECT opportunity arises to shout it out at a scene in a movie. Like when the giant dogs attack in Ang Lee's Hulk, and I yelled out "Who Let the Dog's Out?" It got a great reaction, because when that song came out, people didn't think it was talking about Nick Nolte. I confounded their expectations.

two examples:

When Nettrice & I saw Black Sheep, the film opened with an ad for that beer, Stella Artois, that was one of their fake short films (why an ad during a film festival is a whole separate question). At the end of the ad, our film festival friend Jason (www.jasonwatchesmovies.blogspot.com) hollered "Brrrrillliant!" It was well timed.

Or when I saw a trailer for that movie a few years ago about recording ghosts' voices, whatever the hell that stupid movie was called, the trailer was really deliberately scary. And at one point during the trailer, someone in the theatre let loose with a blood curdling scream, better than I could have done with months of practice.

Again, beautifully timed.

During the movies, no. Sit still and stfu.

When I saw The Others, not only did a woman's cell-phone ring, and not only did she answer it, but she actually started a conversation and then bitched when an usher came and told her she would have to hang up or leave.

And on a number of occassions, I've seen a person politely ask someone to be quiet only to have the people complain (more loudly than when they were talking before) about the gall of the person telling them to be quiet.

It's one of the reasons I go mostly to the Arclight. The crowds there are usually good about respecting the rules of the theater.

that's also why I left LA -- everyone there thinks they are the most important person in the world, and I can't stand driving in that atmosphere or seeing movies in that atmosphere or anything.

My best friend is soon to move to Hollywood & Vine, so whenever I go visit him, we'll be reserving our seats at the Arclight. Also, I just heard that one of our theatres up here is upgrading to that model -- reserved seats, no ads, limited number of trailers.

So of course since everyone took pity on their near death age and smell of moth ball I could care less and I went on to say "God Damn it shut up!" Now at the time it didnt hit me, probably because i dont think before I speak but shortly after I was like "Damn, did I say God Damn It while watching my white jesus take a good old time beating"

Or the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" movie, for those who've probably never heard of it (ahem, Janey).

I knew there was trouble when I went and saw it with a friend openning night, and a large group (like 15 of them) of obviously inebriated teens/twentysomethings walked in. First they sat behind us, but fortunately moved to the other side of the theater before even the previews started.

When the previews started, the continued to talk and yell and carry on. They were detterred for like three minutes when my friend yelled "Shut the fuck up!!!" right as the movie itself started. Then the went on blathering away loudly. About 20 minutes in, my friend went out to complain. About 30 minutes later I went out to complain. When I did, the manager said, "Wow, you're the third person to complain." Then basically proceeded to do nothing.

But on some levels, what the fuck was I going to do? It was the ATHF movie. The stars were a talking happy meal. Everyone in the theater was either stoned or should have been. Plus, well, there were a hell of a lot of them. And I can look and act sort of intimidating when I want, but I doubted that it was going have an effect on a group of 15 drunks that were about 10 years younger than me. It was a no win situation.

I can't remember what movie it was where they showed that trailer. I mean, usually they tailor the trailers to the audience based on what they've already paid to see. The idea that I would be in a movie where ATHF would be recommended is uh anathema to me, but who knows. lol

First of all one of my boys is a "loud talker" in the theatre and I'm always giving him the "will you quiet down" look. Second of all my family is a bunch of loud mugs. This will all make sense in a moment.

About a month ago a few us break down and go see Disturbia (Shia LaBeouf, cute girl, Carrie Ann Moss, Rear Window rip-off, I'm there). My boy was being a bit loud during the commercials and trailers but he quieted his ass down. Near the end of the movie, some dude two rows ahead of us, turns around, stands up and says "SHUT THE FUCK UP BITCH!" I look around like maybe I'm gonna get stole on. No one in my party had said anything. 10 seconds later dude stands up again "IF YOU DON'T SHUT THE FUCK UP SOMEONE IS GONNA GET HURT." Finally realized he was talking to the three high school girls in front of us, but I couldn't hear them so I figured maybe we were the offending party. When the movie ended, he continued his spat with the girls and proceeded to call them sluts and c*nts also. Nice and family friendly.

A few years ago we went has a big ass family (mom, dad, grandma, aunt, all the siblings and our S.O.'s -- it was right around Christmas break) to see Ocean's 11 opening weekend. We snuck a bunch of food in and of course my youngest sibs start bickering over it. So we're makin a bit of a racket in the very back of a stadium seating theatre. People are looking around. This continues through the trailers and it's lookin like someone might get hurt. My parents are arguing over who's gonna settle the situation and who's child is who's responsibility. Right when the Warner Brothers logo comes up for the film, my youngest brother, who was about 11 at the time screams "Time to get your Oh Face on. Oooohhhh, ooooohhhh" from Office Space. Everyone laughs their asses off. Movie starts, everyone is quiet, all is forgiven.

Um, yeah...I have a new friend who's like that. Stereotypical black guy talking at the screen. *sigh* We've only been to two movies together and luckily they were the kind of movies where it probably didn't bother anyone else, The Host and Grindhouse. Whenever he directs his comments at me, I don't respond, just nod and keep watching, hoping he'll get the hint. So, now I'm very hesitant to bring him along to any SIFF screenings, 'cause I don't know if he's like that with all kinds of movies.

*****"THE DEPARTED" SPOILER ALERT *****

We went to see The Departed & he was kind of babbling all the way through, and I kept patting him and hushing him, and then when what's his name says to Leonardo DiCaprio "I didn't understand how you could be there because I gave you the wrong address," my friend turns to me and *shouts* "JANE HE GAVE HIM THE WRONG ADDRESS!!" at which point I said, "yes, now STOP TALKING"

I learned that "hush" doesn't work. Patting doesn't work. Modelling behavior (leaning over and whispering directly in his ear in response to something he says) doesn't work. "Stop TALKING" worked.

I might've become violent. I definitley don't need people pointing out the obvious. Play-by-play is for the sports bar, not the movies.

In response to Reply # 0

this happened to me at the last movie i saw, and it took everything inside to say nothing, and i didnt. i figured this dude was so big and couldnt get comfortable in the seat, so i felt a little bad telling him to stop something i assumed he had no control over. but at the same time dude must have horse kicked my seat at least 5 times.

i was about to skip the politeness stage and get straight to yelling i was so bothered, but i was with my mom so i just quietly got enraged as to not start a scene.

in retrospect, i shouldve said something politely, but its so hard to keep your demeanor kind when you feel like cussin someone out, lol.

I'm really really sensitive to chair kicking and I NEVER do it, but my legs got kind of stuck together when I was uncrossing them at one point, and I don't know if I made contact hard enough to be felt... Just once though. Maybe twice. lmao

Once, this woman in a row in front of me answered her phone, in a regular tone of voice like she was at home: "HELLO? Oh, I'm just at the movies. Uh-huh. Yeah."

The heffa didn't bother to go outside, get up out her seat & stand by the door; nothing.

I gave her the death look. And I made sure she saw me too. Folks like that need they ass beat.

44. "So here's the times I've yelled at people in the movies:"
In response to Reply # 0

1. Signs- Girls down in the front row were screaming randomly which relieved all tension and was awful (a la the 28 Days Later story someone told earlier in the post). So I yelled "SHUT UP YOU DUMB BITCHES!" They shut up. The entire theater applauded.

2. Shallow Hal- Some big frat guy was trying to be cool in the front row, laughing sarcastically, going "Haha, man, this is sooooo funny." So I yelled, "Shut the fuck up asshole!" then hid for the remainder of the film.

3. The Hulk- This one isn't too complicated. A baby was cooing during the film for like 15 minutes, resulting in many "awwww"s from other audience members. So I yelled, "TAKE THE BABY OUT OF THE THEATER." I think everyone thought I was a baby hater. But goddammit, I wanted to see The Hulk throw tanks without a baby coo every 20 seconds.

4. T3: Rise of the Machines- These 13 year old dudes were talking loudly as the movie began to their slutty 13 year old girlfriends with their henna tattoos and spaghetti strap shirts. So I said, "The movie's starting. Shut up." They waited a second, then started muttering, "Loser, we're just tryin to have fun asshole..." and shit like that, so I turned and stood and said, "Shut up or I'll shut you up" and as I sat I said "I will beat you like your father if you keep talking." No more muttering.

Long story short-- I love being a movie theater tough guy. Because I'm not at all tough in real life, so swearing at strangers who are ruining everyone's movie experience makes me feel good inside.

(Hmm, two Costanza references in the same post. Does this mean I watch way too much Seinfeld?)

My boy and I went to see Blade 3 at the dollar show and these teenagers were in there acting a fool...you could tell they were just there to hang out. Anyway, this nerdy looking older guy says, "can you please be quiet I am trying to watch the movie?" The teens responded by saying, "shut the fuck up you get what you pay for!" Usually I would have sided with the older guy and threaten to whoop they ass, but that shit was funny.

I know it shouldn't be that way, but it is.

Also, the selection of film has a lot to do with it. If you go watch a comedy or a movie marketed toward teens, the chances of Shenannigans is much higher. I avoid those.

Plus I have a theater scoped out that charges you for parking. That really keeps out the riff-raff like you wouldn't believe. It's usually a good experience there, even if it is 20 minutes away (straight freeway driving).

This continued @ least 2 or 3 more times before moans & groans followed & finally about 3 or 4 of us at the same time told him to shut it.

I mean, we all had our ideas as to what he was playing, but a guy behind me at one point turns to his companion and says all smartass like no one else heard what he heard "As Time Goes By." I mean, I'm sure his wife heard that bit, too. We all did. But most of us kept our mouths shut. It was Dock of the Bay. lol

In response to Reply # 0

Which was made more problematic by the fact that their 13 unruly ass kids were sitting between them. To make matters worse, they were making and taking phone calls the whole time as well. I was pretty mad about it until I remembered I was in King Kong, and it's not like the dialogue mattered that much.

The most recent "talker" experience I had during a movie was actually on a plane. Now, I know movie watching on a plane isn't quite as sacred as movie watching in a theater, but still... Basic rules should apply. I sat next to a woman who talked the whole way to China. That's not a figure of speech mind you. The plane was going to China and she talked for its entire duration. And drank. She drank a lot, too. So, you know, she'd be tapping me on the shoulder during Deja Vu, and I'd have to take off my headphones and explain time travel to her, while she's swigging little bourbon bottles out of her purse.

Then when 'Man of the Year' (or whatever that movie is where Robin Williams is president) came on, she kept telling me to put my book down, or wake up, or whatever, because I NEEDED to watch it. Because Robin Williams is just that good, evidently. When the movie ended, she applauded.

That last one is a little different, because in that instance the talker is actually interrupting your non-movie watching... But it was still hell regardless.

I swear, if you're tapping me on the shoulder and talking to me during a movie, you sure in the hell better know me on a personal level. Especially if it's on a plane. And especially if you're interupting me when I'm reading or sleeping on said plane. I would have complained to the stewardess. Or possibly done my John Matrix/Jack Bauer Season 5 impression.

whether it's reaching into their bag and dragging their forearm across it like a saw, or it's stuffing a fistful into their mouths so that they can't breathe and chew like a fucking cow so that you hear every kernel being crushed...

i wish they'd just choke to death already.

-- the lights go down and they have to eat. You've just been out to dinner with them so you know they're not hungry; or they told you what they ate for lunch, or whatever. But the lights go down and they pull out their food.

I'll have a soda or water now and then, but I really don't think eating during movies is necessary or desirable. I can sit still without feeding myself for a couple of hours, and I don't get what makes people think that they MUST eat during movies.

A couple of years ago a girl confronted me after a movie and told me that I had ruined her filmgoing experience by telling her not to talk.

I said, well, that's fine. Your talking was ruining the filmgoing experience of all those near you. Fair's fair.

I don't see movies alone, atleast not in the theater alone but I am not a talker. I just enjoy someone elses company, plus I enjoy talking to them after the movie is over and discussing what we just saw.

The only reason for this is if it is a good movie I want to discuss it with someone and hear they did/didn't like about the movie. If someone hasn't seen the movie yet you do not want to spoil it for them. If it is a foriegn/independent/limited release chances of finding someone to discuss the movie with is pretty slim. Plus if it is a movie I really like and want to see I want to expose others who might not have heard of it or seen it to the said movie.

I know this and I am thankful for PTP and this forum. I always enjoy reading other peoples post and opinions. However sometimes you just need that living face-to-face human element, interaction, and live debate.

But back to the subject at hand, I can't stand movie talkers, I know how much it can ruin your movie going experience so I never talk when I watch a movie, alway turn off my cell, and I usually don't get snack but if I do for some reason I try to eat them before the movie starts. I might give the occasional gasp.

That goes right along with my theory that talkers see going to a theatre as a social event rather than actually watching a movie.

In response to Reply # 0

it was during Charlie's Angels (I was in middle school, don't judge me). It was after Drew barrymore described how she would whoop a bunch of dudes and then proceeded to whoop those dudes in the exact way she described. After that she says defiantly: "And that's kicking your ass!" I didn't even mean to say it loud but I blurted out "That was so fucking lame!"

I was immediately embarrassed until seconds later from across the theatre i hear someone exclaim: "Sho was!"

what a bad, bad movie
