"Ted (MacFarlane, 2012)"

The trailer has arrived.

Is it juvenile? Yes.

Is it the same schtick from Seth MacFarlane as Family Guy? Yes.

But goddammit, I still laughed and can't wait to see it.

And, honestly, it's probably one of those films that I say I'm going to see and then when it comes out, I never end up making a trip to the theater but I thought the gags in the trailer worked.

Also, if he's going to venture into new ground, it probably won't be with his first movie. Now, if he makes ANOTHER movie that is exactly the same, then I can see the critics having at him.

That being said, his schtick is so thin that most every joke reminds you of something from Family Guy. I think I liked the trailer more because I never really tuned into Family Guy and got tired of MacFarlane's brand.

That's because Family Guy has covered just about every joke/reference/gag it possibly can at this point. I mean I've had entire e-mail chains going with like 15 different, random topics throughout that I've responded to with only Family Guy youtube clips.

So it's hard not to think of Family Guy when he does...well, anything (a) because he's the creator and (b) because that show has covered an insane amount of ground in the ~13 years it's been around.

He was so awful in that movie he did with Will Ferrell that I have no desire to see him do any kind of comedy again. Even his lil Entourage spots leave something to be desired.

Maybe.

I don't think this will do well. There's a niche of people with very immature and childish senses of humor who will eat it up, but I don't think it will do well, overall.

EDIT: Now granted, I haven't seen Wanderlust, which looked kinda flat, I skipped American Reunion, and I haven't peeped Woody Allen's latest because it doesn't interest me in any way, shape, or form

But yeah, 21 Jump Street is the comedy to beat so far, imo

It's about whether or not what people saw was funny

So far the consensus appears to be no

Why that's not understood is not known at this time.

If it ain't funny, it ain't funny. That doesn't make people "snobs." I really wish y'all would find a new way to argue this shit.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I just don't find every sentence with 20 cuss words crammed in it funny. Cussing out thunder is also not funny to me. It just seems so middle school in my eyes.

And my favorite comedy ever is Dumb and Dumber, which can be called juvenile, but it's also got some brilliant humor and classic lines and doesn't lean on vulgarity to be funny. This seems to.

The main theme of this movie seems to be "hey, look at this Teddy Bear cussing and talking about sex stuff!"

It just seems stupid to me.

With GI Joe moving to March 2013, Universal has moved up "Ted" to go up against Magic Mike and Madea. It'll now open June 29th.

Smart move as it was sandwiched between Spider-man and Dark Knight and was opening up against the latest Ice Age film.

In response to Reply # 33

The Ice Age crowd wouldn't be seeing Ted anyway. It was really the only comedy being released in July-- now it's opening two weeks after Sandler and one week after Carell (not that Carell's flick will be a blockbuster, but if it's a summer critical smash a la 500 Days of Summer, it could suck up publicity). Plus, with the black audience digging Madea and the young female audience digging Magic Mike, it might have even more competition that weekend than it would against only Ice Age.

The up side is, with no comedies opening before it, it has another two weeks as the most recent comedy release, plus the always-tantalizing July 4th, so it could definitely help with legs. Not sure it helps its opening weekend too much. I'll be interested to see what happens.

Like.... several theaters were sold out several shows with a couple hours til start time. Highly unexpected. I loved it, but then it was what I expected- a live action Family Guy episode. The appeal won't stretch far but this will definitely hit Harold & Kumar status IMO, though it'll probably make a lot more money.

Between the built-in FG audience, the Wahlberg appeal, and a summer largely devoid of this sort of comedy, I'm going to say it has decent legs and will do some repeat business in its demographic.

It's just flat out NOT for a lot of people though, so who knows. All I know is tonight was a mad house for it.

I'm not a particularly big Family Guy/American Dad/Cleveland Show dude, so this wasn't on my must-see list (I was dragged to it)

So I got exactly what I expected, which was a live-action episode of one of those shows. No, not with the same characters, obviously, but with the same kind of score, same kind of shots, same kind of punchlines, same kind of joke buttons (calm down), same sense of humor.

Which ain't exactly a bad thing. I mean, who goes to see a Seth MacFarlane movie expecting a huge artistic/comedic/storytelling leap, right? He's got his wheelhouse, and he's perfectly comfortable in it, and that's great. Though I had hoped that we'd get... something... more. Don't know what that "more" is, however.

I didn't find Mark Wahlberg particularly funny in this movie. Technically, he's the straight man to Seth MacFarlane, and though he had the chance to get off a couple of good jokes I just wasn't as enamored with him as I was in The Other Guys, which is a much funnier movie all-around (no, it actually is, guys, cry) and featured Mark playing essentially the same "goofy straight man" role.

And that was my problem with the movie as a whole: a few good jokes (the cutaway of Mark and Mila Kunis freaking out over "the shit" was pretty damn funny, as was the running joke of Ted being promoted every time he was disrespectful at his job), the movie just didn't come off as a "movie" so much as an elongated Seth MacFarlane show episode with live actors. Some will call that "snobbish" or "thinking too hard," but oh well.

Plus, I needed to see more titties. I mean, let's just be real. If we're hard-R, then let's really go hard-R, son. By the way, this is not the "more" I was talking about earlier.

For all my amateur editors, you really could have cut the Giovanni-Ribisi-does-creepy-dude-YET-AGAIN subplot from the movie. Not sure what you put in its place, though.

Again, a few funny jokes but not enough to justify repetitive plotting. If you dig that, then fine.

All that said, Sam Jones was awesome.

The high points were hilarious, the lows were cringeworthy. Some great characters (Patrick Warburton) some awful (Joel McHale). Brief attempts to be heartfelt, plenty of attempts to be ridiculously over the top. Alot of the Family Guy style breakaways just didnt work in a live action. I probably expected a *little* better, but there was enough laugh out loud moments that I'd recommend checking it out.

>Is raunchy R-rated 'Ted' really America's favorite family film?

By Patrick Goldstein

12:48 PM PDT, July 5, 2012

When I was with a group of parents earlier this week, watching our kids play in a 14-and-under baseball tournament, I asked them how many of the boys—aged 13 and 14--had gone to see the R-rated movie “Ted.” The answer: Just about all of 'em. But here’s what I found really surprising: Nearly all of them went with their mothers.

Put simply: Despite its rampant drug use, crude sexual banter and profanity-fueled humor, “Ted” has become a family movie.

I have to admit that I wasn’t exactly shocked. When my wife and I saw “Ted” last Sunday afternoon, we sat next to a dad with his son. When I asked the boy how old he was, he said 11.

This isn’t the first time a lot of parents have taken their well-under-17 kids to a raunchy comedy. “The Hangover” series, which was also R-rated, also had considerable multi-generational appeal, though judging from anecdotal evidence, it was more of a father and son experience—bachelor parties gone bad isn’t exactly a mom-friendly genre.

But “Ted” has crashed the cultural zeitgeist in a big way. At first, I figured this might simply be a chattering-class phenomena. It wouldn’t exactly be a news flash that parents in West L.A. have different values than parents in Kansas City or Cleveland. But judging from the number of kids in the theaters across the country, “Ted” may be breaking records in terms of drawing pre-teens and early teens into the multiplexes.

Because it’s an R-rated movie, children under 17 seeing “Ted” have to be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. According to CinemaScore, a research group that interviews opening-night moviegoers around the United States, the number of under-18 moviegoers for R-rated comedies tends to run somewhere between 10% to 13%.

According to CinemaScore figures, 10% of the opening-night audience for “Horrible Bosses” and “Bridesmaids” was under 18. For “Hangover 2” and “Knocked Up,” it was 13%. For “Ted,” it was a whopping 18%. And those are just opening-night figures. If the survey included Saturday night and Sunday afternoon moviegoers, the percentage would surely be considerably higher.

But what made “Ted” such a family-friendly film, despite its R-rated escapades? After talking to a bunch of moms as well as some Hollywood marketing executives, I think I can sketch out a few plausible theories.

First off, the film benefited in a big way from we might call the Seth MacFarlane Factor. MacFarlane, who co-wrote and directed the film, has built up a huge reservoir of goodwill with parents and kids, thanks to his popular “Family Guy” TV series. Even though the show’s comedy is sarcastic and occasionally crass, it’s hardly outrageously offensive material. So when parents saw MacFarlane’s name plastered all over Universal Pictures’ ads for “Ted,” they assumed that the film’s comedy wouldn’t be as nasty or insulting as “Project X” or Adam Sandler’s “That’s My Boy,” two recent R-rated comedies.

And of course, “Ted” had, at its center, a teddy bear. I suspect many moms were subconsciously drawn to the film because of the bear. Even though the bear actually has a mouth like a sewer, it was a reassuring icon from their kids’ childhoods. As one mom told me: “I loved that teddy bear. He could’ve said anything and it wouldn’t have bothered me. If they’d been selling stuffed ‘Ted’ bears at the concession counter, I would’ve bought one.”

Movie marketers view it pretty much the same way. “You could say that parents were tricked, in the best possible way, by the combination of the furriness of the bear and acceptability of Seth MacFarlane,” said one studio marketing chief. Because of the bear, “Ted” had a very different image with parents than a stoner comedy featuring Seth Rogen or Jonah Hill.

“Most R-rated comedies with lots of drugs and bad behavior come off as emulatable or aspirational, which for moms, is a huge drawback,” he said. “But somehow it’s OK to see scenes where Mark Wahlberg gets stoned with a teddy bear. It comes off as far more of a harmless fantasy than if Wahlberg was getting stoned with Owen Wilson.”

“Ted” also benefited from its online buzz factor. When Universal first put up the film’s red-band trailer this year, the blogosphere and Twitter were filled with positive word-of-mouth. By the time the movie opened, fans were tweeting about the packed theaters and sharing great moments from the film.

The positive buzz created what movie marketers call a collective sense of momentum for the film. “Everyone is so inter-connected now that when you have a hit, it feeds off of its own frenzy,” said one marketing expert. “When the kids are all tweeting, ‘It’s so cool’ and ‘I’m at this theater—why aren’t you here too?’ it creates an enormous peer pressure that parents find hard to resist.”

Or as one mom told me: “It just gets to the breaking point where you go, ‘Am I going to be the only parent who says no?’"

Speaking from personal experience—I have one of those 14-year-old boys too-- it isn’t easy to say no. So far, I’ve been holding firm. I let my son see “21 Jump Street” and “American Reunion,” which were both R-rated comedies, but I’m drawing a line in the sand with “Ted.” The foul language and sexual innuendo didn’t bother me, but the massive amount of casual drug use—even if it involved a guy and a bear—came off as a bit too easy to emulate for me.

But how firm is that line in the sand? Ask any parent. When a movie is as irresistible as “Ted,” it creates a big cultural wave, certainly a wave big enough to wash away a lot of parental lines in the sand.

I thought it was funny. Seth definitely didn't make anyone think that he was branching into any different directions or ready to write a story that could handle feature length but there were enough laughs to make this work.

when it's staring them right in the face.

This movie shits on Black Dynamite, Life Aquatic or whatever other moderately amusing quirky film nobody saw some of y'all hyped.

That is not to say that the film is without flaws, it's got a few glaring ones.

Like seemingly every other major comedy in the 40-Year-Old Virgin era it took too long to wrap up at the end.

The Giovanni Ribisi kidnapping subplot was also completely unnecessary & not really that funny or interesting.

But there's just too many laughs in here (the hotel fight, the coke-fueled party with Flash, some of the voiceover commentary, Kunis coming home to the scene with Ted & the hookers, Tom Skerritt, etc) for that to sink the movie.

I'd imagine that will only become more true upon repeated viewings like any other good dumb-but-fun comedy.

If you don't like Family Guy at all (I only became a casual fan at best of that show once I got over it ripping off The Simpsons) then you probably won't wanna bother but otherwise it's fairly undeniable.

Longo I still can't believe you thought Rock Of Ages looked better & potentially more successful than this flick.

That was one of the worst calls I've heard from a movie buff in a long time.

No, he didn't mean Napolean Dynamite although it's certainly more "quirky" than Black Dynamite

But remember y'all, he thought that Black Dynamite was "overrated" by the critics and PTP

Plus Keenen did it better, as did Pootie Tang

So this is some agenda-based cyse posting yippee

But unlike it, this post is hilarious

You can toss in whatever subgenre (unfunny dark comedy perhaps?) another PTP favorite 'A Serious Man' goes in as well.

Napolean Dynamite was better than all of those & still not that good.

And I didn't say Black Dynamite was 'overrated' by critics since I didn't bother reading the reviews if they even bothered to write them.

Always.

Fuck it, I laughed more in Rock of Ages than I did in Ted. No lie. Ted was better made, but it simply wasn't funny to me at all. Madea's Witness Protection was funnier than Ted too. Is that "typically PTP" of me? Bottom line is I love musicals, I love Cruise, and I don't like Family Guy. All three are widely known. That's why dude called me out in the Rock of Ages post saying, "This was made for Frank Longo!", lol. What'd you expect, Bomb?

And I DEFINITELY never said Rock of Ages would make more money than this, lol. Come now. I never had it sniffing 80 mil, which was my initial estimate at the beginning of the summer for Ted's numbers. My guess for Ted was low, but I didn't expect the critical praise for the film (nor do I really understand it, but again, not my thing), and usually relative critical praise for a comedy means strong word of mouth (I thought Madagascar 3 overperformed too, same reason).

Besides, Hairspray, Shankman's last musical (a musical I disliked on the stage), was the best musical feature in... I don't know, a decade? I thought he would find a way to make Rock of Ages, another musical I dislike on the stage, work. *shrug*

Don't look for objectivity from me when it comes to movie musicals. I'll be cysing the shit outta Les Mis in the winter too.

I also find Cruise increasingly creepy & that brand/era of 'rock' that nostalgists started fetishisizing years ago to be mostly an abortion of the genre & barely qualifying as rock to begin with so we can go back to vehemently disagreeing on the quality/prospects of those two respective films, I was just tossing one more grenade your way on my way out.

the trailer told me everything, that it was guna be one long ep of GLEE. only diff being i didnt just wanna kill the cast, i wanted to kill myself as well.

call it intuition or talkn out my ass or watever, but i sat thru BURLESQUE. shit was so idiotic lol. and R.O.A looks about the same kinda craptastic predictable moofie from the trailer alone, so it was a clear sign to stay the fuck away. i find these newish musical moofies too similar to the deluge of Step Up and other assorted nauseating dance movies. when u think about it, no real diff b/w em (cept for the cast).

Longo, for someone who exhibits fairly well formed opinions on most films (and we do share a fav film in common so im not "hating" on him per se), cant divorce his love of musicals in order to recognise piss-poor movie versions of them. so be it. everyones gotta have some guilty pleasures i spose..

..but it still looks SO fucking shithouse lol.

as for "Ted", im so glad i read most of these anxious "this is guna suck" reviews before i went to see it, and was pleasantly surprised to find a highly likeable stoner buddy comedy. Wahlberg has never been THIS dopey/goofy or this non-violent. i actually think it's one of his best performances in a while. i agree Seth coulda at least changed his voice a bit more, but then i remember Ted sayn sumthn like "no i do not sound like Peter Griffin" or sumthn, that kinda kills the criticism imo. he's admitting it on film lol, which is an invitation to get the fuck over it.

i can also thank this moofie for igniting the need to watch Flash Gordon + Season 1 of T.J. Hooker lol. Ted is just a stoner comedy, which means less and less to ppl these days, but to me, is highly valued. same reason why i thought "Due Date" was fucking hilarious/underrated.

I hate the FAMILY GUY. And I hated the trailers for this because it seemed like everything I hate about the FAMILY GUY was here, just live action. But the girl drug me out to see it, and I thought it was pretty funny. Those Seth tropes that I find hacky and unfunny were all here, bu the performances were stellar. I respect dude more after watching this film, even if his brand of funny isn't my cup of tea.

Went to a 5:30 showing on Tuesday. Theater was 60% packed - and had at least four 6-year olds WITH their parents.

It was fine.

I laughed a bit - but the "plot" was thin.

I'd compare it to reading William Shatner's Tek War series - familiar, interesting in parts - and takes about 90 minutes to finish.

I predict the DVD bonus scenes will be good.
