..why else would she follow up such strong showings in star trek and avatar with such bullshit fluff?

i mean, i certainly understand how a few of these projects might've seemed plausible on paper (and i'm bein' generous), but c'mon

most directors can't be trusted. every hollywood vet needs to know this.

and a script ain't shit unless its in the right hands.

bottomline: choose better projects (and stay away from physical action flicks unless you're seriously gonna put in work)

she keeps this up, and she'll be on megan goode status in no time (and that ain't good at all)...

There's a hole in female lead actresses now.

Michelle dropped out after being preggers.
Mila, seems quite content to just drop and RE title every few years.
Elisha Dushku, ain't getting out of TV Land
Angelina works too infrequently
If jennifer's Body would have been a better movie, I think Amanda would have had a shot, if so inclined, alas it was not.

So, honestly, who else is out there? This could be GREAT for her career.

..unfortunately, it doesn't

while i agree that hollywood is wide open when it comes to young female leads right now, i was actually referrin' to this particular realm of the film world

she made the same mistake every other starlet lookin' to solidify their range as an actress: she put herself in the wrong hands.

director (megaton) brought the same trite copycat attempt to this film as he did with the transporter series, and still couldn't improve on his mistakes. quick cuts are cool for post production, but it won't work for an entire film.

the action sequences are boring and telegraphed. there is no "wow" factor here.

honestly, if you're gonna step into the role of an assasin, you should prob'ly skip the short-hand one-on-one walk thru and go full throttle thru boot camp and anything else you need to prep. it might take 3-6 months of your life, but the payoff is HUGE on the back end.

bottom line: you have to sell an action sequence. they didn't.

she's sexy (esp when she's angry), but that's about it...

..i like zoe

i would love to see her succeed as an actress in all genres. i know she's young and has a lot of potential, but that doesn't excuse the run of movies she's chosen. i know its important to remain relevant in the hollywood landscape, but there's a much better way of doin' so.

strike hard and fast, but be ACCURATE

*you mentioned matt damon, and she could stand to learn a few things from him.

matt might not have the most dynamic range in regards to acting, but he does his homework (not just crammin' for exams). his success in the bourne franchise is primarily do to the fact that he spent months in training (and continues to do so) for the physical requirements of the character/role, as well prep work for his own stunts.

this isn't an "unlikely hero" scenario, we're talkin' 'bout a trained assassin

and while i understand that people are excited to see a "minority" as the female lead, that's not gonna cut it for me. yes, i know its a summer action-flick, but her color/cultural background ain't gonna cut it for me

we've already seen halle fail miserably in that position...

not denying something you saw would be lacking btw

check it:

http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2011/08/23/zoe-saldana-on-being-an-assassin/?mod=google_news_blog

Zoe Saldana on Being an Assassin

With the exception of two action sequences, actress Zoe Saldana did all of her own stunts as Cataleya in the upcoming action film, “Colombiana.” Saldana plays an assassin on a mission for vengeance in the Olivier Megaton directed film. The screenplay was written by Luc Besson.

Speakeasy caught up with Saldana to talk about her training regime as well as her upcoming short film directorial debut.

The Wall Street Journal: How did you train for your role as the assassin Cataleya and where did you train?

Zoe Saldana: I started training in Los Angeles with my trainer who is the stunt coordinator for “Avatar” and I worked with him on “The Losers.” He’s pretty much been the person that trains me that has to do with anything physically challenging. By the time I got to Paris, I continued training with the stunt choreographer there.

Your directorial debut is coming up. How has calling the shots helped your career as an actor?

I feel like it is absolutely necessary in this business by putting yourself in the shoes of your producer or director or writer, a crew member, even catering, it gives you a better insight into the fact that the sun doesn’t rise when you arrive on a set and it doesn’t set when you leave. It’s an ongoing process, it’s hard work and dedication. I learned to be considerate and patient and also know that if everyone arrives at 5 a.m. you have to be there at 4:30 a.m.

What is your short film about?

Its inspired by my niece and my ballet teacher’s son. She was having a little issue getting bullied in school. She’s only eight, and so I know what that is like, especially moving so much. Kids can be really cruel. She had anxiety attacks. I also can’t deny my affinity to represent and shed light on autism. My ballet teacher was my second mother, I’ve known her since I was 11 years old. Her 11 year old has autism and I’ve seen throughout the years what its like for children grow up with this condition. I married those two things. I also love science fiction and special effects and motion capture and 3D, I’m a geek, I’m a dude that way, and I wanted to make a short that was science fiction driven as well.

You mention moving around a lot. How does that influence the work you do now?

I think by living in drastic places and moving places different from each other and growing up in different countries, it just gives you a sense of worldliness. For some reason it ignited this humility and this respect for the world, as opposed to just being one- dimensional and thinking that life is just the radius of your block. Or your town. That’s small-minded way of thinking and such a common way of thinking. I’m so grateful that I am from New York, which is an amazing metropolitan melting pot city, and that my family is from the Caribbean. There is so much different culture that is in my family. It taught me to embrace the chameleon in me, and I do believe that is one of the reasons that I am an artist and I can only be an artist.

prob'ly cool for most flicks, but a mistake here:

trainin' with a stunt choreographer is only part of the program. if you really wanna ace this genre, its important to spend some serious time trainin' in the various arts required by the character/role.

she did some light krav maga walk-throughs. cool.

like i said, if you're gonna play the role of an assassin, you really need to walk the walk. while a few months of trainin' certainly wouldn't make her an expert, it would certainly keep her from lookin' like jennifer lopez in "enough."

and The Transporter is what got him there. I'm not saying she should shoot for his career arc, obviously she'd want to move on from there, but i don't think the director is the problem here. Going along w/your point - Statham trains in Wushu and stick fighting.

Now obviously, if what you're saying is accurate, she apparently didn't train hard enough for the film.

I don't know why actors make this mistake. With all the Jackie Chans/Stephen Chou's/Jay (whatever his name is)'s out there - we can tell the difference between choreography and edits and someone who can actually fight. :/

..i just wish he had range

his lane is pretty limited, but he's certainly mastered it.

*this director appears to have a limited imagination

loser's was zoe's first dip in the waters, and she was the sexy co-star so there's less weight to carry.

colombiana could've easily vaulted her status, had she taken a different approach...

within certain genres and under certain circumstances
so yes a bad movie isn't AS bad for me

say watching it on TV
or
not paying for it at all

it would have to be pretty horrid for me to outright hate it under those circumstances
if i don't gear towards the genre at all then those factors probably don't help at all

and it was full of black people too (sometimes for white flicks its nothing but white people in there)

Overall I was happy with the movie, I thought it was a great role for her. She also has that thing working for her where she's beautiful in the way white guys like black women to be beautiful. I was sitting next to two fratboy white dudes and they kept going on and on about how hot she was in every scene, them niggas had something to say in every scene. Also the theater had mad clapping going on and even got a few laughs during some of the ridiculous parts of the dialogue.

favorite part fight scene between her Molla at the end, a bit fast but very realistic. Pretty solid story, I loved how she punked the FBI and CIA agents, funny at times.

i'm happy that hollywood is SLOWLY *though not quickly enough* that you can put a non-white actress in a lead movie, be it action, drama, etc. and get that FOLK.WILL.PAY.MONEY.TO.WATCH.

its okay...you can start opening up the "who could be bankable" list, hollywood...we'll wait.

the movie itself...wasn't decent at all.

I'm not asking for much, but some character development would have been nice for *ALL* the main players

i have to agree with critics who say that Zoe should have been served BETTER with a more fleshed out, well written script. And, it doesn't to be an artsy revenge type hitman movie like HANNA (2011) or the like.

but, the character was VERY thin as hell...

and i have NO problems with her character dating a white dude, but, CAN YOU GET SOMEONE WHO LOOKS BETTER THAN MICHAEL VARTAN?!

I mean, Channing Tatum wasn't free? Brandon Routh?

hell, Michael Ealy/Nicholas Gonalez, etc. weren't around?

OK.

the fight scenes I love that she did ALL or MOST OF her stunts, but i'm with CyrenYoung...the jump cutting was too much. And yea, a movie like this, you *NEED* to be studying some kind of martial art or fighting style well IN advance...like really.

i know matt damon was talked about, but he *DID* prep for the bourne movies for nearly a year BEFORE they shot and

i'm not saying Zoe couldn't bring the heat, but during her fight scenes--specifically the final one, you could tell it was choreographed.

No shade, but Krav Maga is *NOT* choreographed. AT ALL...it's UGLY as fuck and folk get hurt/can easily DIE from any of the move combinations.

But here? choreographed.

BUT, I do give them props for USING IT and not trying to mix it in with other styles...

*Now, if someone can find a way to incorporate Russian Martial Arts/Systema into a movie...for real*

Zoe was deserving of a quality action film where she COULD show that she could carry a movie *AND* fight *AND* inhabit a character with some emotional gravitas and weight.

COLOMBIANA WAS NOT IT.

I would have to give this a B-/C+ overall; a B for Zoe's acting because she was the *ONLY* thing that kept me invested in watching the movie from start to finish.

i think he fits a role (i.e. milquetoast, kinda lame and weak guy who has an improbably hot girlfriend) that he's honestly too old for and really isn't *THAT HOT* to play....

i mean, shit, they coulda paid Sam Worthington several million dollars of the 45 M budget they used to make this movie to play her clueless boyfriend who is part of the FBI team that was tracking her.

i would have paid to see them together on the screen again....even if she was damn near 9 feet tall and blue....

i just know when i saw it, all i heard from women in the audience was stuff like: "Damn, he's not cute" or "Isn't he kinda old to be playing her man?"

your date swooned, but the women in my showing were *NOT* impressed to each his own...

but if i was casting this movie, i would have chosen someone else for the basically thankless role:

http://rodonline.typepad.com/rodonline/chad_white/

like him....seriously.

Release Date: Aug 26, 2011; Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama, PG-13; With: Zoe Saldana

Zoë Saldana is a catsuited avenging angel out to execute the members of the Colombian crime syndicate that murdered her parents, lithely pouring herself through ductwork and elevator shafts to deliver a few well-placed bullets. Colombiana is silly fun at first, but as her break-ins and escapes grow absurdly complex — and her motivations increasingly muddy — it turns into the same silly stuff we've seen before, a dish of revenge served not so much cold as reheated. 34. "Saldana too skinny? (ny mag swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

Anyone see this article?

http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/08/skinny_female_action_stars.html?imw=Y&f=most-emailed-24h5

In the new action drama Colombiana (which opens tomorrow), we first meet heroine Cataleya as a young girl who aspires to be Xena, Warrior Princess when she grows up. Instead, when we check back in with Cataleya as an adult, she's become Zoe Saldana, and if there's one major difference between the action heroine she idolized and the one she has become (besides the fact that her bangs are way better), it's that Xena's Lucy Lawless had some believable heft to her, while Saldana resembles a supermodel who could be toppled not just by a gang of thugs but a stiff breeze. Saldana's a talented actress who can sell ferocity with her face, but her slender arms could snap in two if a stuntman grabbed her the wrong way, and when she roundhouse kicks an assailant, Saldana looks like a spider doing a cartwheel.

Of course, you don't need us to tell you that women in Hollywood are skinny. (Covers of Cosmo can make that point without words!) But right now, with superhero movies in vogue, action heroes and heroines seem to be racing to comically opposite extremes. Just call it the "conservation of muscles" law, where no body weight shall be created or destroyed: As men pack on weight for their Captain America moment, women have to keep the universe in balance by going on the cleanse. Look no further than The Dark Knight Rises, where the already buff Tom Hardy is bulking up to play the villainous Bane by eating a full chicken every two hours, while his female counterpart Anne Hathaway describes her Catwoman diet as "dust and dreams." Evocative, but probably not tasty!

Nowhere is this trend more evident than with the one female superstar who can get an action movie green-lit instantly, Angelina Jolie. Conceptually, it's clear why Jolie is seen as an action heroine: She radiates power, and she's intimidating even while standing still. The problem — and you can see it in last year's Salt, which kept her as covered up as possible — is that Jolie has gotten too thin for her punches and kicks to be believably forceful. She once filled out her underweight frame to play Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, but these days, she seems to be keeping one eye on the head she's about to kick and the other on the red-carpet dress she'll need to wriggle into soon.

At least there's some hope on the horizon: For the lead in his upcoming action flick Haywire, Steven Soderbergh cast Gina Carano, a mixed-martial-arts fighter making her acting debut. Carano is gorgeous and flat-abbed enough to land a Maxim photo spread (get ready to hear a lot of "knockout"-related puns), but her healthy frame looks like it could inflict actual damage, because it's called upon to do just that inside the octagon. At Comic-Con, Soderbergh played a clip of Carano brutally beating up Michael Fassbender, and in an era that's already saturated with action heroines, this scene still managed to elicit impressed winces: Ladykiller Magneto, snuffed out by a lady killer! Carano cuts a seriously impressive figure, and let it be a lesson to those other actresses who like to talk a good game about getting into shape for action roles: Until they let us see that essential, extra weight on their bodies, it's just empty calories.

i can't even argue with this.

i mean, i love angelina jolie and zoe saldana. BOTH of these women can do action well....

but, it just isn't believable when BOTH of them are so damn skinny...like realistically, one of the gusts of wind flying off of the hudson river into battery park this weekend would knock BOTH them broads down for real...

how is zoe taking out Jordi Molla (Colombiana) or Jolie took out Liev Schrieber (Salt)?

it just isn't looking right.

and yea, I saw Anne Hathaway up close and personal as CATWOMAN when they were shooting here in pittsburgh...i was like at least michelle pfeiffer and halle berry were both thin, but you *COULD* believe they could kick ass because there was muscle tone and some heft.

Annie: hmm...i'm thinking a real live tabby cat would probably take her down by jumping on her.

and it doesn't make sense...if hollywood wants hot ass women to be action stars, then, you must allow them to gain the muscle and wait NEEDED to PHYSICALLY CARRY THE ROLE.

end of story.

like i'm not expecting them to look like Hayley Atwell (captain america) but muscle tone and a few extra pounds would be FINE.

and hayley atwell: i really *COULD* see her kicking ass to, imho

my fav corny part of the movie , that also went unsaid, was, "look how multicutural this movie is !!!"

i think people who enjoyed Taken will enjoy this movie ( and NO, it's not as dope as Taken, or the same...but it is another st8 forward revenge flick)

I mean, I know it's just a typical action movie, but it felt like it wanted to take itself seriously, and some of those scenes were just outrageously absurd. Like when her uncle pulls out his strap and murks somebody driving down the street in broad daylight outside a school, and then stops and has an equally absurd conversation with lil Zoe, or the whole jail assassination scene, that shit was more comedy than it was fun action.

It was fine for some entertainment but, it just seemed too ridiculous for a movie that took itself too seriously. The complete lack of backstory didn't help either.

Because it sure was one to the audience I was with.

It's like the most extreme sort of "LOGIC BAD, ACTION GOOD" thinking that fuels 80-s style braindead shoot-em-ups (down to the bleepy computer displays with big dialog boxes and all sorts of sci-fi-ish options on them).

Zoe Saldana is basically playing a colored female version of Batman, and without a "based on the comic book" credit to sort of take the edge off, you're left with a silly-ass movie that's really only good for Drunk Movie Night.

Every five minutes I found myself stifiling laughs. And non too successfully, I might add. It's a quasi-exciting thrill ride (it would be a lot more of one if I couldn't predict every damned scene and shot in the movie, save for a 9 year old child jumping out a window like Spider-Girl), but is it so hard to make an honest attempt at some form of plausibility?

as absurd as it was, it was a popcorn movie plain and simple.
>
>i had no problem with her physique
>i had a problem with the gratuitous lets be sexy
>boring trite unnecessary pandering

her physique was odd, given that she was taking down dudes TWICE or more her size...but I guess it added to the whole shock and awe of a woman killing all of these people.

plus saldana has always been thin...but it was still odd to me.

well yea...the sexy/pandering trope is always lame in action films. and they're *CLEARLY* added when the hero is a woman (its always on some..well she needs a man to come home to after kicking ass, etc. no she doesn't. NOT AT ALL)

>i did have a problem with her acting
>not convincing as a killer

i thought it was just me...but who could have brought it and made it convincing?
Naomie Harris
N'bushe Wright (yes to this)

>michael vartan - no

well he was probably cheap to get

>lennie james - was fine
>cliff curtis - always yes

YES Cliff Curtis has me watching Dany Delany's SHIT ASS BODY OF PROOF on ABC (I love Sonja Sohn but she can do *WAY* better than this. Hell, the ENTIRE CAST, INCLUDING DELANY, can do better than that dreck on ABC.)

>Jordi Mollà - might have been a better antagonist than the
>don
>

hmm...he was blah and bland for me. And, Jordi is rarely that in his films.

>that little girl was adorable and yep looked like me as a

yup...all critiques and comments go out the window when its mom or dad (I just shut my mouth when he raves about AMC's HELL ON WHEELS and COMMON...I don't have the heart to tell him that COMMON SUCKS as an actor...I just don't! LOL!)
