"The Book Of Eli (The Hughes Brothers, 2010)"

(trailer)

Although it's opening in January, I still have high hopes. Denzel looks badass. Also, I love the Hughes Bros work. Anyways, it stars Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis so I'm automatically in.

And Emmerich's last film was 10,000 BC which made 94 million. Should be interesting to see how the film does and whether the bleak atmosphere hurts it in the box office.

the subject matter IS going to hurt its prospects of getting those Emmerich numbers you claim its going to get...

Denzel is the shit, but how many of the movies has he carried in his career gotten Emmerich numbers? I love Denzel but the only black actor who's gotten Emmerich numbers by carrying his own film..is will smith. this movie will make some bank...but not emmerich numbers. not even close. they haven't even trying to REALLY PROMOTE this either...plus, 10,000 BC and 2012 has MASSIVE promotional leads up GOING into their respective releases...this movie--didn't. I'm just saying...

also, it's january, this is a SERIOUS dumping ground for films that studio either couldn't market any other period during the year or are so problematic that they're released this month in the hopes of just making SOME kind of profit...

Shutter Island has some big guns attached to it and looks pretty lame. Much more to discuss there.

I thought you meant Shutter Island which opens around the same time as Book of Eli.

As for that, Inception is getting more hype because of Chris Nolan, the secrecy behind the plot, the very interesting cast.

trailer didn't really grab my attention, but then again, the dark knight was the last movie i saw in theaters. mad max with denzel is interesting though. i'll probably end up seeing it when it comes on regular tv, like 95% of all other movies that i've watched.

I loved it till the 3rd act. It was like Mad Max on a religious mission. After the gunfight in the house the movie crashed and burned.

Pros:
Everyone was on point.
The Hughes Brothers are fucking back!!!
The action sequences are crazy. Especially the gunfight in the house.
Al Green through Beats headphones , to me anyways, was a nice touch.
Ray Stevenson whistling the Once Upon a Time in America theme.

Cons:
Once the 3rd act came shit was anti-climatic and fucking stupid.

I wanted to love this...it was at least entertaining until the last act...like mentioned before...had potential to be awesome...than got plain dumb. WTF happened!!!

Anyway, excellent shootout scene at the house...best filmed action scene since the OLDBOY hallway scene or the extended tracking shot at the end of Children of Men.

Denzel was Denzel...Oldman was Oldman...and the Hughes Brothers shot this beautifully.

Now the many negatives...

The entire last act...the FEMALE cast...bad cgi/cgi gore...

stupid shit that can't be explained like...how did he get out of the locked room? how did she get out of the locked cave? why does he end up walking back east when he should be going west and then saves her from being attacked, right on time???

I could go on...

But the ending??? Did they watch this in the editing room??? Did they watch the final cut???

Regardless, it was entertaining for the first hour. But I was more disappointed then entertained.

Like many people mention, the first and second act were great, but the third act was O.K. The problem was the pacing of the third act, it really felt rush towards the last 10 minutes. I had no problem of the 'twist' but the character development at the end didn't make sense at all. Overall the critics are mad because it's not 3D.

He was blind, right?

I posted a mini review in GD saying I didn't realize he was blind until the end and a few folks posted that I was wrong and that he wasn't blind.

So I wanted to know what you guys thought.

Points to him being blind:

*They zeroed in on his eyes at the end.

*The book was in braille.

*He listened for the bird and then shot. He also could smell the salt in the nearby ocean (it has been said blind folks have keener senses).

Points to him not being blind:

*He used a light to read the Bible (I just think that was a red herring)

*He knew where to shoot and who to punch (I think that has more to with listening to the movements of the bad guys).

Someone brought up the point that like everyone else he had sunglasses to shade his eyes from the sun so therefore he wasn't blind but we of course know that blind people wear sunglasses sun or no sun.

What say y'all?

.

I agree, the guy was blind. I'm sure there are people who will dispute it, but there was a ton of clues pointing towards his condition.

Whether he was in blind in one eye or two, I'm not sure. When they closed in on his eyes, it seemed that only one eye was burnt out, but I like to believe he was fully blind.

Overall good action flick, first two acts were on point, third was bad but not as bad as everybody is making it out to be. Mila was beautiful as usual but pretty weak in the acting department, then again they barely used her so she didn't have much to work with.

If you want entertainment, then check it. If you want to nitpick and find plot holes, then wait for the dvd.

you could see it in the close up at the end, his eyes had that white color to them.

also, i believe that in the shootout scene in town he only shoots each bad guy AFTER the bad guy shoots. probably due to him having to hear where the bullets are coming from.

He was blind and probably was blind before the incident, because he knew how to read in Braille.

55. "book of eli tops avatar, on pace for $40 million weekend (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

critics lose! my work here is done.

http://www.hitfix.com/articles/2010-1-16-box-office-book-of-eli-cuts-through-avatar-with-11-7-million

Knocking "Avatar" off its box office perch is no easy task, but Denzel Washington's "The Book of Eli" accomplished that feat on Friday.

The post-apocalyptic thriller gave Washington his second best opening Friday after "American Gangster" with a strong $11.7 million. That's pretty impressive considering "Eli's" R-rating and the competition from "Avatar." The Hughes Brothers' latest looks like it will do anywhere from $40-45 million for the four-day Martin Luther King Day weekend which means recouping its reported $80 million budget should be an easy task. In fact, "Eli's" expected success along with "The Blind Side's" massive box office take makes longtime background player Alcon Entertainment the industry's brightest star at the moment (someone might need a raise over there).

As for "Avatar," don't cry for Jim Cameron's epic blockbuster. The PG-13 picture still made $10.4 million on Friday and could still make a comeback opposite "Eli" when all is said and done. The Oscar contender's current domestic take is a staggering $460.9 million as it sets "Titanic's" record $600 million tally within its sights.

Among other releases, Paramount Pictures expanded "The Lovely Bones" to a disappointing $5.7 million after opening in limited release last month. Peter Jackson's thriller was expected to be an awards contender, but it just didn't click with the industry and fans of the best selling book did not show up in droves for its national release. After testing showed strong interest from young girls, Paramount decided to tailor the campaign toward that demographic. Did they make a mistake not selling it as a Mark Wahlberg thriller first? Would it have helped if Wahlberg did more publicity for the picture? Questions all worth pondering on the Melrose lot.

"Sherlock Holmes" is still doing good business after a huge Christmas opening. The Robert Downey, Jr. hit found another $2.8 million for a new cume of $173 million. $200 million and official word on a sequel appear right around the corner.

Jackie Chan's "The Spy Next Door" had initially showed strong potential in industry tracking, but fell flat when it hit theaters. The kids flick did only $2.4 million -- a tie with "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel" -- and should tally $10 million or so after the holiday weekend, at best.

Look for complete box office weekend estimates tomorrow on HitFix.

63. "Nope. Avatar wins. Book of Eli on pace for $31.6 million"
In response to Reply # 55

http://www.hitfix.com/articles/2010-1-17-box-office-eli-can-t-hold-off-avatar-for-the-weekend-crown

LOS ANGELES (AP) — James Cameron's "Avatar" had a $41.3 million weekend to shoot past "Star Wars" as the No. 3 movie on the all-time domestic box office charts. Next stop, "The Dark Knight."

No. 1 for the fifth-straight weekend, Cameron's sci-fi saga raised its domestic total to $491.8 million and should top $500 million after revenues are counted on Martin Luther King Day, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Worldwide, 20th Century Fox's "Avatar" lifted its total to $1.6 billion, second only to Cameron's last movie, 1997's "Titanic," at $1.8 billion.

"One guy makes two movies in 10 years, and they're by far the biggest movies of all time. That's remarkable," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for the studio.

"Avatar" topped the original "Star Wars," which took in $460.9 million domestically in its original run and several reissues over the years. But factoring in today's higher admission prices, "Star Wars" remains well ahead of "Avatar" on actual number of tickets sold.

"Avatar" now is closing in on "The Dark Knight," No. 2 domestically with $533.3 million. After that, only Cameron's "Titanic" at $600 million will remain ahead of "Avatar" domestically.

"We'll be proud of our No. 3 slot," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released "The Dark Knight" and has hopes for more in the Batman franchise from its director, Christopher Nolan. "I can just give Chris Nolan a nudge that he's got to raise the bar."

Warner, which has Nolan's sci-fi tale "Inception" with Leonardo DiCaprio opening this July, had a strong No. 2 debut of $31.6 million for its action thriller "The Book of Eli." The movie stars Denzel Washington as a post-apocalypse prophet carrying the last known Bible to safe haven across a decimated America.

Expanding nationwide after a month in limited release, Paramount's drama "The Lovely Bones" came in at No. 3 with $17.1 million. Directed by "The Lord of the Rings" creator Peter Jackson, "The Lovely Bones" features Saoirse Ronan, Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz and Stanley Tucci in the story of a murdered teen looking back on the world from the afterlife.

Lionsgate's family action tale "The Spy Next Door" debuted at No. 6 with $9.7 million. It stars Jackie Chan as a newly retired agent forced back into the spy game when bad guys come after him and his girlfriend's kids.

Like "Titanic," which dominated the Academy Awards 12 years ago, "Avatar" is expected to remain aloft in the box office charts as Oscar season progresses. "Avatar" was up for best drama at Sunday's Golden Globes and is considered a likely best-picture nominee when Oscar nominations come out Feb. 2.

"It's kind of the cherry on top of the cake for this movie to not only be a massive box office hit, but to get all this awards attention," said Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com. "It's hard sometimes to get a 50- or 60-year-old out of their chair to go see a science-fiction movie in 3-D. But if 'Avatar' gets enough recognition from the critics, they may just do it."

Fox executive Aronson would not say if the studio expects "Avatar" to pass either the $600 million domestic total for "Titanic" or its $1.8 billion worldwide total. Some box office watchers say "Avatar" could climb as high $2 billion, though.

"'Titanic' was a ship. Batman had a motorcycle. 'Avatar's' a rocket ship," Aronson said. "Is there a lot of fuel left in the tank? You bet."

Even if "Avatar" sets a new revenue record, it's doubtful it would sell as many tickets as "Titanic" did because of today's higher admission prices.

"Titanic" sold about 130 million tickets domestically based on average ticket prices of about $4.60 back in 1997 and 1998. Based on today's average domestic price of about $7.50, "Avatar" would be at around half that mark.

Average admission prices for "Avatar" likely run even higher, given that much of its business comes from a 3-D version, which costs a few dollars extra to see.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Box Office Mojo. Final figures will be released Tuesday.

1. "Avatar," $41.3 million,

2. "The Book of Eli," $31.6 million.

3. "The Lovely Bones," $17.1 million.

4. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," $11.5 million.

5. "Sherlock Holmes," $9.8 million.

6. "The Spy Next Door," $9.7 million.

7. "It's Complicated," $7.7 million.

8. "Leap Year," $5.8 million.

9. "The Blind Side," $5.6 million.

10. "Up in the Air," $5.5 million.

there was only one particularly galling part (The Book of Eli II: Mila's Revenge!), but the rest was perfectly in line with the storyline to that point.

it all happened quickly, but I didn't see any need for more extrapolation. entertaining movie.

oh yeah: RT still sucks. I'd rather flip a coin than go by their ratings.

Good flick. Could have been better with better editing or some scenes added?

The Good:

Gave you a good sense of desolation with the way it was shot, and the scene location.

Action scenes, particularly the hand to hand combat scenes, were well done and exciting.

Had a sense of purpose, had the requisite mysteriousness about who/what/when/where/how the world ended.

Half-finger gloves! (I dunno why, but I love seeing that in post-apocalyptic films. Every one, I mean EVERY ONE, has people wearing half-finger gloves. How that became the de riguer fashion in post-apocalyptia, i dunno, but it's funny to me how every movie with that setting uses them as part of the costumes.)

The Bad:

Okay, so you learn that the hero does all this bad-assedness through the film even though he's blind. For some reason, when you have a movie that ends this tranquilly, that just wasn't enough of a shocker or OMG! to end the movie on. I personally think they needed either one more action sequence at the end, or some more philosophical/religious gravity to have ended it properly.

The whole Mila Kunis setting out on the road at the end thing. Did nothing for me, and it's not like she really had purpose at the end.

Lastly, it's jive hard to believe they were no bibles left, but they had the Torah and Quran sitting there chillin' on the shelves. And if people blamed religion for the war, why would they single out the bible and not all religious texts? Maybe it's nitpicking, but just didn't ring true to me. Especially since in times of war, people tend to cling to religion. I'm sure other copies had survived, but meh, I'll let it go.

Very anti-clima

Although it was kind of funny that the whole point was to save the Bible, save it from evil...and then in the end it just gets stuck on the shelf with other religious texts. The end.

I give them credit for going off in that direction. Just for me, the direction was one that I didn't particularly enjoy. And since we're never given much of a reason to care about the two main characters (besides the fact that it's Denzel and everybody loves Denzel) there's no real emotional impact to the ending. Even with Gary Oldman, there's no emotional impact to the end of his story.

It could have been done right, even switching gears like that. But I don't think it really worked.

Plus by putting it on the shelf with the other ones was "some more philosophical/religious gravity to have ended it properly" for me. A few reviews and even some ppl coming out of the movie have talked about it being religious propaganda or whatever but i never got that impress at all. The film very much shows and tells that religion is both a positive and negative thing that's message is more important than anything else. That's why when Denzel loses the book he really didn't care b/c he realized it's the message not the book that's important (plus he memorized lol).

I mean, you talk about it being anticlimatic... I watched the whole thing knowing he was blind (caught a few of the spoiler post titles as I was trying to pass over them) and I still enjoyed it all the way through. To be honest, I think I may have liked it more knowing he was blind, to see how he'd use his other senses to survive.

There was some anticipation as to where he was taking the Bible, and granted the final destination was nothing too exciting, but I found it more interesting that he either was, or thought he was, a prophet and to see where his faith would take him.

The Mila thing at the end was stupid, of course. She would die in like 2 days. Other than that I thoroughly enjoyed it.
