I was watchin the Hand That Rocks the Cradle the other day for the first time in forever and I must say it deserves a nomination. The movie is pure white other than the gentle, retarded maintenance negro, lol. Man, Ernie Hudson needed some CASH in 1992.

i don't understand how this ever made the list. the reasons they give "its innovative technical and narrative achievements, and for its status as the first Hollywood "blockbuster." It has provoked great controversy, both in its own day and today, for its promotion of white supremacy and glorification of the Ku Klux Klan" does not make it a good movie IMO. I mean damn, if they're going for that they should list Gummo.
never saw the whole thing, just various clips during some media classes in college but what I saw was pretty awful. I had a friend actually sit through the whole thing but only because he wanted to watch every movie that is on the AFI Top 100 list.

black people in cinema. They started with "Birth of a Nation', and showed black-related movies every Tuesday and Thursday night (all night long, mind you) until they got to "Get on the Bus".
If I never see that flick again, I'll be one happy motherfucker. Having seen it, I realized just how much early filmmakers took from it to create what we now recognize as the standard cinema language. I also realized just how racist people could be when they wanted...to the point of ludicrousness.

The thing is, the first half wasn't even particularly racist, at least for the time (it was still racist), but the second half was way, way over the top racist. Highest grossing movie of its day too, sadly. I can safely say I will never again willingly watch that film again (had to watch it for a film class in college).

Anyone that even suggests another movie clearly hasn't seen Birth of A Nation.
I mean, Hollywood still isn't perfect, but anyone pointing out the negative stereotypes shown in today's movies definitely should just watch Birth of A Nation. Seriously that movie is so wrong it almost, *ALMOST* feels like a parody. But nope, there was no joke at all to that movie, they were honestly saying that black people should've stayed slaves, as free people they were ruining the whole country, and it was up to the KKK to bring shotgun justice and restore order.
I really want to know what the reaction was like to this when it first came out. Did everyone know ahead of time what it was going to be about? Were there black people going to see it like "Hmm Birth of A Nation, that sounds exciting..." and then have to duck out the theater before the end in fear that the movie would make the white people want to get their lynch on.

But it was still the top grossing movie of its day, and the first real blockbuster, so obviously a lot of people actually liked it.
The book the second half of the film was based on, The Klansman, was a best seller too so its not like audiences didn't know what was coming.
Of course, theaters were segregated back in the day, as blacks usually had to watch in separate theaters, so I doubt many of them actually got to watch Birth of a Nation.

I think I rewinded that scene five times in a row. The rest of the movie was trash with the possible exception of the Lord Of the Rings-discussion which was somewhat amusing...

Granted it's been years (well over 10) since I've seen it.
But I remember it mostly making fun of the white perception of black culture/people, not actually making fun of black culture/people.
The only real problem I'd see is that in the movie really really fake looking makeup and nothing else was supposed to be enough to convince both Rae Dawn Chong and James Earl Jones that the main guy was black. I mean this was nowhere near Eddie Murphy style makeovers. If it only fooled the white characters, that would've even way funnier.
Then again, it has been a long time. Maybe if I saw it again I'd get pissed off really quickly...
