"The Matrix Reloaded freeway sequence."

Okay, so the movie is, for the most part, ass juice.

But I struggle to think of a recent Hollywood big-budget action sequence with as much ambition and invention as that freeway chase. It's not even perfect (some of the CGI doesn't look great, and it sorta bends its own rules in order to help the characters survive), but even years later, as I watch it, I'm still taken aback.

Name some other ambitious big-budget effects-laden action sequences of the past decade or so. I can't think right now but want to compare.

1. Megan Fox

2. On our way to the theater, we saw a guy getting jumped. The muggers ran off and the guy getting mugged threw himself on the hood of our fortunately-then stopped car yelling 'I'VE JUST BEEN ASSAULTED' (yes, 'assaulted'. not 'mugged', not 'beaten', but 'assaulted') - So I get out of the car to see if he's okay and call 911 for him. Also, it had been a really long day and I hadn't eaten yet, so while I'm helping him out I absent-mindedly pull some string cheese out of my pocket and start going to town on it. The guy, who wasn't seriously injured but understandably very stirred emotionally, took offense to this and starts yelling at *me* for eating cheese in his time of need.

So yeah Transformers was terrible.

But I will agree that it was an awesome action scene. Also they built a fake freeway in my hometown to shoot that scene so I was pretty pumped about it.

The 2nd and 3rd Matrix movies were a let down but they had a pretty high bar to hit so I don't hate on them too much.

...is that literally any person on the freeway could turn into an agent. At any time. In theory, if the computers knew Morpheus and Trinity were on the freeway, WHY WOULD YOU SEND ONLY TWO OR THREE AGENTS OUT THERE? You can create agents out of nothing, you're the Matrix. You coulda had everyone on the damn freeway simply stop their cars, get out, and swarm the motherfuckers.

But then, you wouldn't have a scene. So they had to break their own rules, pretend like all the other agents were off-duty, and the two or three on the freeway were more interested in talking shit to Morpheus and the Keymaker than in killing them.

...why not just constantly be switching bodies to whoever is closest to them? They only switched bodies a few times throughout that whole chase. If Trinity is zooming forward on the motorcycle, and you inhabit the truck driver to try to smash it over on him, and she pulls back, doesn't it make sense to immediately switch into the body of the guy driving behind her? When she's driving the wrong way in traffic, why not position yourself in ANY of the cars heading towards her and swerve into her?

thr architect told neo that he had done all fo this before. 8 times before. so he was supposed to survive, he was supposed to save morpheus and at least the key maker to get him tot he source and have the conversation with the architect.

my problem os issue with the movie is really in theat architect scene. it throws out all fothe mysticism of the movies and it is never revistsed. new never tells them and they never ask. the movie just keeps on truckin.

its like your boy met God and he gave you the answers to life, and you don't even want a HINt of what he said.

the highway...yeah the agents could have switched bodies at anytime and they did, but they weren't supposed to kill them you can assume. just the key maker, but not really. the machinesneeded the key maker to get neo to the source. so inately the agenst had to fail, so that neo could succeed and get tot he source.

again the movie pisses on its own mythology and never looks back.

*shrug*

i just wante to see some werewolves/vampires

if they could just swarm agents at a second's notice like that, the very first scene in the very first movie woulda been Trinity DYING. Soon as the cops got outta sight of the ground crew, they woulda all turned into agents and DESTROYED Trinity.

Obviously there are agent limitations. I suspect some of it has to do with how difficult it must be for the Matrix to keep the batteries believing if they see loads of wild shit all happening at the same time.

-The opening scene of Sauron knocking fools left and right - maybe a weird pick, but had me hyped from the get go.
-Gandalf and Balrog on the bridge
-Helm's deep, the calvary charge down the hill at the end
-The nazgul attacking the horsemen racing for the city, Gandalf repelling them
-Most of the Gondor battle, but especially the scenes involving the Nazgul grabbing people and dropping them out of the sky. In the books they went on about how terrifying the Nazgul were, but it took the movie for me to understand why.
-The giant elephant attack, Legolas taking one down single-handedly

the people was in there, denethor had already bitched up the city, and the heads of their army come flinging into the city? that was beyond ill.

cosiggy on Helm's Deep. legolas going tony hawk on the shield down the steps. damn near every battle outdid itself.

and you right about the nazgul. when their mounts were picking up warriors and their horses and just throwing they asses.... man. and those huge catapaults launching fuckin BOULDERS at the city, and seeing huge chunks of stone falling off. incredible.

It would be absolutely amazing since it has imo some of the most epic scenes and battles that have ever been written....my real question is how they would effectively re-create the first 50 or so pages(basically the creation story), and how it could have a length under 5 hours while still doing all the stories justice lol. In that same regard, there's no way audiences would be able to remember all the characters and especially their genealogies because the book just has so much content....I was flipping back and forth with the appendix area to remind myself who was who.

Some of these might not be what you meant, but they were sho nuff oooohhhh shit!! action scenes:

Drunken Master 2: Jackie Chan + furniture vs. a whole mob of guys.

The end of the Wild Bunch: even to this day few movies fuck with the last 20 minutes of that movie in terms of sheer carnage.

Desperado: The whole scene that starts off with those two guns popping up out of Antonio Banderas' sleeves...ahh...

Oldboy: Really, there was only one main action scene in the movie, but it was seriously one of the best I've seen. Ever.

Azumi: From the point where it's Azumi vs damn near all of Japan, to the big fight with the villain with the ferris wheel camerawork...nice.

Dead Alive: This shouldn't really count but when I saw it with friends we had to rewind it and watch it again. I mean he had that lawn mower going for a long. long. time.

The Good, The Bad and the Weird: One action scene in the 'thief' town was really, really well done. I was trying to figure out how they had so many things going at once and managed to get it all together in front of the camera. It must've been tough.

City of Violence: Again, the last 20 minutes. It's like they were trying to one-up The Wild Bunch. They didn't, but man!

Of course I have to mention the classic Untouchables baby scene. It was intense in it's day. Although I saw that movie again recently and, sadly, it hasn't aged well.

Based on 'big budget, effects-laden' in the original post, some of mine (Oldboy) might be ruled out...

But I stand by them all as action scenes that work it.

so i wouldn't have had to watch that garbage. those dogs were creepy and unrealistic, just like everything cgi in that movie. the last movie did a much better job, and that was even criticized for looking fake.

i mean at least make the drool on those motherf*ckers look real.

77. "I'm sorry, but the CGI in the Ed Norton Hulk movie was horrible"
In response to Reply # 73

They over-textured it and made the colors less saturated in an attempt to make it look "more realistic", but the animation (that is, the actual movements and acting of the animated characters) was subpar, the models were deforming all over the place, and - save for the shots composed more or less for the trailer - the effects had an awfully cheap and unconvincing look about it.

For example, compare Norton's transformation into the Hulk to Eric Bana's. Bana's, I believed; Norton's, not so much.

After everybody complained at how fake looking the first one was, all I read in this one was about how they were fixing up the effects to make it all look more real and natural.

Nope. It seemed like they just fell back on cheap parlor tricks to disguise crappy CGI.

The Hulk's movements in particular were terrible.

is argueably one of the BEST executed chase scene of this decade. from start to finish it was memorable:

the joker shooting some random black cop for being illegally parked

the detour to the tunnel and getting ambushed by a garbage truck & a MAC-truck that says "(s)laughter is the best medicine"

the joker going up each time with his arsenal to shoot up the SWAT escort truck

the introduction of the bat-pod

the helicopters getting caught by the wires

"he missed!"

the bat-pod flip from the wall of the building

the joker winning in a game of chicken, only to get caught by a surprised return of gordon.

and ALL OF IT was shot with IMAX cameras
