"I have over 1500 DVDs - what am I missing? (Foreign films, etc)"

See my sig for a link to the list of DVDs I already own.

The last time I did this, you all came through with some great recommendations.

I am looking for recommendations of titles that I don't already have / that you recommend I pick up.

Since I live within a couple miles of Scarecrow Video, your recommendations can also include titles that aren't region 0 or region 1. (Special editions I may not be aware of that are only available in other countries, for instance... like the 2-DVD Region 3 special edition of "Malena.")

I have a want list on the dvdtracker link, but it's not completely up to date. I'm more interested at this point to hear your suggestions.

Thanks

Cop 'em. Trust me. And I'm one who is hesitant in recommending anyone to buy a DVD...I feel better saying it's worth renting/seeing at the most. I'll try to browse your collection later as I just checked just to see if you had that trilogy.

The Region 1's are pretty cheap and have extensive extras for single discs. To top it off, they are great films.

Maybe preorder the November Criterion release of Kieslowski's "Double Life of Veronique."

The Kino Kieslowski collection gets great grades from DVDBeaver, here's a review for one of the films in that collection (2nd link below), one of the most powerful works one will come across. Then, you can check the other DVD reviews for the other ones in the collection. The graphic design blows though:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews17/a%20Krzysztof%20Kieslowski%20DVD%20Review/a%20Krzysztof%20Kieslowski%20The%20Scar%20Blizna%20DVD%20Review/cover-large%20kieslowski%20collection%20scar%20camera%20buff%20dvd%20review%20.JPG

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReview/short-killing.htm

Then if Scarecrow has the Polish Warner Brothers DVD set of "Decalogue"...I'd consider copping that 'cause it blows away all other available editions.

And a question, are you looking for great films? Or great DVDs? Like, what about a lackluster DVD that is a great movie?

i will look into that... thank you.

>And a question, are you looking for great films? Or great DVDs? Like, what about a lackluster DVD that is a great

i know there are a lot of great movies i've never seen, so it's not necessary that it's a great transfer. i have the full frame version of "running on empty" because there is no other version for some reason. i have the crappy transfer of "dersu uzula" and "ran" masterworks. i need to upgrade to the criterion version for that. those are just 2 examples. i got tired of waiting on criterion to release "breathless"...

so to answer your question, mostly if the movie is good, that's all that matters. i love dvds because done right, they can be a wonder. case in point, season 2 of "the office." unbelievable. (for the amount of extras, etc.) i have some bad movies, that i bought mostly for the commentary tracks...

Cop the Three Colors Trilogy and maybe Double Life of Veronique. I'd rent the other works (i.e. the Kino collection and Decalogue) first to see if they're a purchase to you b/c they are different.

RE: Scarecrow's Decalogue. No, that's not the one.

>you responded to my last post... not sure if you remember, but

You've been away too long. Good to have you back for a bit. I'm really bad w/ remembering recommendations I gave.

>i will pick up the trilogy. thank you for recommending it. i
>saw "blue" a long time ago... i am surprised i still haven't

Interesting. Let me know what you think of her after "White." That has nothing to do w/ the quality of her performance; she was wonderful. "Red" seems to be the once most admired.

Knowing your love of Kurosawa, you pick up the Criterion Seven Samurai re-release?

If you're wondering if there are better DVDs of the movies you already own...hit up DVDBeaver comparisons, if you don't do so already.

mostly it was more than just recommending titles... just a few words can sometimes hook someone into picking something up

>Interesting. Let me know what you think of her after "White." That has nothing to do w/ the quality of her performance; she was wonderful. "Red" seems to be the once most admired.

if i remember correctly, she played a not so likeable character in "white"... much different than her character in "before sunrise/sunset" heheh.

It's one of my top 3 films of last year. I saw it at SIFF and then again when it came to the Grand Illusion. I can't fathom why it hasn't been released on DVD here yet. I guess I'll have to break down and buy the Region 2 on ebay for $35ish.

as soon as you do, they'll announce it the next day as coming out... then you'll buy that version too because it'll have a commentary track not on the pal version... then 2 weeks after you receive that version, they'll announce a special edition that is loaded.

one year later, a 3-dvd version will come out. haha i hate studios sometimes

Than it went to Adult Swim with Flash animation. I absolutely love the show (even though it's not much like the other two I said) and I'd reccomend renting the second or third season from a rental site of your choosing.

And yeah, we're all gonna miss AD. Even the people who hated it will miss being able to call the fans pretentious every Monday night.

thank you for this. had to stop it while watching it the other night and go to:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097202/movieconnections

i'd watched "le samurai" recently and noticed within a few moments the impression it left on woo...

then the colors and the beach house reminded me of deniro's place in "heat."

i'd like to see a further restoration though. this was one of criterion's first dvds and it deserves better.

damn dude, 1,500 films that you own? have you seen all of them? I love movies as much as the next man, but damn.

you convert your house to a blockbuster.

i haven't checked your list.....but here is a random recomendation...'Brain Donors' made in the 90's with John Tuturro...it's pretty much a modern Marx Brothers film and has some classic moments...but then again, you prob'ly already have that

Definites:

"Yi Yi" Criterion Collection (Yang)

-One of the global masterworks of the 2000s thus far. And it's a Criterion.

"Late Spring" Criterion Collection (Ozu)

-Perhaps Ozu's finest work. Some of the finest characters and actors one will see.

"La Jetee" (Chris Marker)

-found on the out of print "Short 2: Dreams" or Region 2 France edition Noveaux Pictures of "La Jetee/San Soleil." Rec'd b/c it's the source for "12 Monkeys" (Gilliam). And it's one of those shorts that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as great feature lengths. I dunno, rumor has it that Criterion's working on releasing it.

"Happy Together" (Wong Kar-wai)

-b/c you have other essential Wongs, but not this! Cinematographic exemplar. To me, vies w/ ITMFL for Wong's most emotionally engaging and satisfying film.

Maybe's (Rent first):

"Flowers of Shanghai" - gorgeous. Masterful direction and storytelling.

"Raising Victor Vargas"

"Harakiri"

-b/c you have some samurai movies

"Fallen Angels" (Wong)

-companion piece to Chungking Express, but quite different (darker) and stands on its own. The moments b/w Kitano's character and his father are among Wong's finest (lots of heart). Other than that, though, I watch it strictly for its style b/c it's quite an experience. Besides Kitano's character and his father, the characters are semi-interesting, but tedious.

DVD collector impulse:

"Apocalypse Now: Complete Dossier"

-b/c you have Redux in your collection. Contains both original and Redux and shitload of extras. Maybe someone can vouch for the set. It's a future purchase for me.

Will post more...but will just put this up before my session times out and stuff gets lost.

>"Apocalypse Now: Complete Dossier"

i almost bought this the other night but passed because eventually he'll include his wife's documentary in the release: "Apocalypse Now: Complete Dossier Redux" lol...

i mean, how can he call it complete without his wife's documentary? that's like "the shining" without kubrick's daughter's documentary, etc...

thanks again!

>will check out all of your recommendations...

Damn, I've rec'd a whole lot of "definites." I'd rent those ones to see, too, so that you know what to buy.

>i almost bought this the other night but passed because
>eventually he'll include his wife's documentary in the
>release: "Apocalypse Now: Complete Dossier Redux" lol...

LOL. I'm really disappointed that Hearts of Darkness isn't included.

Some more:

Definites:

“Spirit of the Beehive” Criterion (Erice)

-Wonderful. Wonderful. Wonderful.

“Angel At My Table” Criterion Collection (Campion)

-One of the best films of the 90’s. Unique. Lovely. Extremely interesting. Outstanding acting. A biopic done well. I don’t like biopics in general, run of the mill ones. Great DVD.

“Freaks and Geeks” (Yearbook Edition – on the show website)

-They might still have them. I ordered mine might quite late ?2? years after its release…on “while supplies last” status.

“L’eclisse” Criterion (Antonioni)

-if you like L’avventura and Antonioni. Perhaps his finest work. Worth seeing for the ending alone.

“Orpheus” Criterion (Cocteau)

Wow. Wow. Wow.

“Black Orpehus” Criterion (Camus)

Definitely.

------

Maybe’s (rent first):

“Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter,…and Spring” (Kim)

-gorgeous. Interesting. To me, exciting. Quite a few PTP supporters, but not near-universal PTP acclaim like Yi Yi.

“3-iron” (Kim)

-Quirky. Romantic. Dreamy. I love films with “no” dialogue.

“Last Life in the Universe” (Ratanaruang)

-Doyle cinematography. Illusory. Ambiguous. Soul. Mood. Hey, if people listen to music for mood why can’t they do that w/ movies?

“Dumplings” (Chan)

-Doyle. Maybe, maybe…his best shot film. I certainly wouldn’t scoff at that notion. Horror. Extended and short versions on the “Three…Extremes” DVD.

“Onibaba” Criterion Collection (Shindo)

-b/c you have Ugetsu and Kwaidan and if you like them, you might like this.

“Playtime” Criterion (Tati)

-b/c you have M. Hulot and Mon Oncle and if you like them, you might like this. And because Tati is such a unique filmmaker.

“Badlands” (Malick)

-b/c you have…and you might like….

“Days of Heaven (Malick)

-definitely rent this, Region 1 transfer is average. Maybe someone like colonelk can speak on another region. I can’t find anything else on DVDBeaver.

Hope I rec'd some stuff you will like...we'll see. No problem.

Only Insomnia in my opinion. But as far as a debut, super low budget b&w, non-linear, noir film, it's worth checking out. But since you dont have The Prestige yet either I'd have to recommend getting that one 1st. Ironically, there's a Batman logo on 1 of the doors that the main characters in Following break into. Some serious foreshadowing on Nolan's part. Ok not really but I still thought it was pretty cool looking back on it. And as much as I love all his works, Memento still stands a notch above all the rest in my book. Looking forward to the The Dark Knight tho.
