It made my night and exceeded even my already lofty expectations.

Some of the physical comedy, if there's too much more than that in the actual movie, might make it seem a little broad, but there were four or five genuine smart laughs (the fire truck and magazine lines in particular) and a relatable storyline that hopefully is rendered with the kind of equal parts raunch and sweetness and overall honesty the Apatow brand has been known for.

BTW, the blowjob / pearl necklace bit at the end was pretty dirty for a trailer.

Oh, and lurking movie suits, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is still a better title than Dumped.

I know what she looks like. Kunis hasn't done anything since That 70s Show went off the air a year or two ago. She's lookin like a hotter and more grown version of Rachel Bilson.

basically an extended version of the theatrical trailer with some R-rated bits throughouot. If you weren't sold by the first trailer (I personally don't understand how you couldn't be), then you will definitely be sold now.

And there were lots of laugh out loud moments. Definitely the same brand of humor. Jason Seigel holds his own in the lead, Kristen Bell is great, and the guy who plays her new boyfriend (the rock star character) is hilarious. Lots of funny stuff.

With that said, there was way too much full frontal dudity. I wanted to laugh, not see Jason Seigel's package a bunch of times. I'm guessing that stuff will be taken out for it to get an R rating.

Overall, if you're into the Apatow movies you'll really like this...even though there are some definite "romantic-break-up-comedy" cliches.

I don't think any of that will be edited out based on this article:

http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2007/12/judd_apatow_vows_to_include_wa.html

Good news for Judd Apatow fans who felt that the director-producer's Superbad didn't include enough penises in its closing-credits penis montage: Apatow, annoyed at a test audience's response to a wang in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, has solemnly vowed to include a penis in every film he makes. "America fears the penis," Apatow says, "and that's something I'm going to help them get over." The unit in question appears behind John C. Reilly's head in an orgy scene in Walk Hard, and supposedly more than twenty audience members walked out of a test screening in response.

Jonah Hill & Paul Rudd were killin me. Segel was 1 of my favorite actors in Knocked Up & he proves he can be just as good in a lead performance here as well.

Seems like some odd clips to choose to promote the film but at the same time, they are probably the cleanest parts of the film.

films not liking it. it started slow but once Seigel's character got to Hawaii it rolled pretty good from there and there were definitely points where i was laughing pretty hard. as always, Paul Rudd killed it. i saw a free screening but i definitely recommend it and i'd pay to go see it again.

My company ran a free screening for it last night. the theater was packed, and it was litterally a non-stop laugh fest. Everyone in the movie was terrific. Russel Brand killed it. Segal was spot on, the singing scene was hillarious. Mila Kunis has never looked better.

go out and see this movie!

Top 5 comedies of the last 10 years. Definetly better than Knocked Up and Superbad.

Segal did a great job in the leading man role, but did anyone else think the pacing was kind of off with some of the sorta random cuts from one scene to another? Maybe that was just me.

But the cast was great, the jokes were non-stop, and Mila Kunis looked sexy as hell (I assume that's not actually her flashing in that picture though.)

and i am a big segal fan. he'll always be Mike the aspiring Botanist to me.

i didnt hate the movie. i wanted very much to enjoy this. but when it comes down to it, i go to see movies like these to laugh til it hurts. i laughed, but not all that hard. and if im judging the movie on its ability to entertain me, i felt slightly let down. there were some hilarious scenes and one-liners, and most of the cast was very likeable. it just didnt hit the mark as a complete movie. it felt like the editing was kinda lacking.

i guess id still recommend this because id MUCH rather see someone i genuinely respect have a huge opening weekend (that leads to more movies from this group) than to have another 'epic movie' or 'date movie' or whatever.

6/10

btw, Russell Brand STOLE every scene he was in. hilarious. and MIla Kunis is soooooooooo fucking hot in this movie.

the editing was really awful in this movie. and i think editing is pretty crucial in comedies.

it had laugh out loud moments but it never really came together for me.

it's worth it just for how hot mila kunis is, though. i mean, she's like *smoldering* hot in this flick.

basically. i really did laugh. but im sorry if i expected to come out with my sides hurting. and no one can give the excuse that i expected too much, cause this was virally marketed as "from the guys who brought you the 40 y/ov, Knocked Up and Superbad." it just never got a good flow going. everytime i thought it was picking up, there would be another lull.

i expect much bigger things from pineapple express. but where FGS' trailer never made me crack up, Pineapple certainly did. i cant wait for that one. im setting the bar very high.

And there were a lot of scenes where you're just laughing your ass off. Russel Brand was amazing every single second he was on screen. Jason Segel was pitch perfect and wrote a great script. I was surprised at the number of times he went full-frontal. It had to be at least 4-5 times in 2 or 3 separate scenes. Bell and Kunis were good, not great, although Bell had some excellent moments here and there.

Favorite line? "No, it's a metaphor for crap movie".

This'll sit proudly on my shelf next to Superbad, Knocked Up, and Forty Year Old Virgin. Can't wait to see what Pineapple Express has in store for us.

I could've done without seeing Segel's peep, but that didn't ruin the movie for me. In fact when it happened the last time, it was unexpected and hilarious.

Seeing Lizzie wanting to be gagged = DEAD.

All in all, another W for Apatow and co.

judging by the trailers, i admittedly wasn't expecting too much but i ended up laughing a lot. some of it could've been more focused or developed. i don't mean from a plot or character standpoint (i don't give a fuck if there's an arc) but stuff like jonah hill's character being an inconsistently funny one-note gimmick, or the gay-guy-from-30-rock, whose character got old pretty fast (although the chess set scene was worth it).

another success for Apatow & co.

Granted I haven't seen Dewey Cox (nor do I have any desire), but 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Superbad, were all a lot funnier.

On the flip side, the cast was great, Mila Kunis is much finer than I had originally thought, but the star of the show was definitely Russell Brand's Aldous Snow.

lol.
just saw it tonight n that one got the most laughs in the theatre.
Paul Rudd is a funny, funny man.

i applaud the multitude of penis shots. i remember what Apatow said in an interview, that U.S. mainstream cinema has a fear of the penis, n that he's gonna do his best to throw some dick in every movie he's involved with (i guess starting with Superbad). it was hilarious how the movie opens and closes with Segal and his shlong lol.

Aldous Snow? dyanmite. they need to bring that guy into the Apatow fold, pronto.

according to Wiki, looks like the boy Alduous might be a fixture of the Apatow troupe:

Brand is currently filming a starring role alongside Adam Sandler in new Disney film Bedtime Stories, to be released at Christmas. He will also film a role later this year in a new Judd Apatow film, and has been confirmed to be playing himself in a film adaptation of his autobiography My Booky Wook, to be directed by Michael Winterbottom.

--

and looking through the rest of his wiki, seems like he just played himself (i knew nothing about him before the movie)

74. "Russell Brand and Jack McBrayer made the movie for me."
In response to Reply # 0

There's some funny stuff in the movie, and Mila Kunis is a FAR better choice of woman than Kristen Bell, but... yeah. The movie was a bit too idiosyncratic for me... everything from the editing of the scene buttons (that means the ending joke of a scene) to some of the shot selection was odd to me...

I could have done without the extended Jonah Hill cameo, as well as the Paul Rudd surfer dude. I don't think you needed them. And an argument COULD be made that we didn't need McBrayer either, but he's just so goddamn funny to watch that I'm giving him a pass, lol...

And while it was great that Segel took decent pains to not paint Kristen Bell's character as a total bitch, it just felt like something was missing from her character...

On the other hand, I thought Russell Brand's character and performance of said character was just about perfect. And I also like the fact that, while he was a cad, he still wasn't an asshole to Segel or a lech to Kunis... he was just a goofy-ass rock star bloke who was smart enough to know when he was getting played out... I thought that was a nice change-of-pace from the usual romantic comedy Dickhead Other Guy...

Now, I dug all of the characters (even the ones that we didn't necessarily need), but I just had a very tough time understanding what it was that made him stay with her for 5 years, and vice-versa. I mean, we see him holding her purse at premieres, and wearing her hideous clothing gifts, but I just had a hard time understanding what exactly it was that drew these two people together in the first place. How did they meet? How did they fall for each other? That was stuff I needed to know in order to buy Segel's heartache...

And yeah, I'm sure a few of you will run in here and declare that a lot of the situations were "real" and "painfully real," so that made them "great" and "extra funny"... fair enough (that dinner scene with Segel, Kunis, Bell and Brand was very funny), but everything just didn't come together as a completely satisfying story for me...

And also, as to the question of whether this was as long as Superbad... yes, actually, it was (it ran 1:51; Superbad ran 1:58), and didn't fly by as quickly as Superbad did, imo... the last 15-20 minutes were INTERMINABLE... I could have done without the 4 endings we had...

I guess ultimately, I liked the characters, but the story itself fell a bit short for me...

Can't really comment on things like shot selection, but I agree I could have done without Jonah Hill (gay crush...ha ha ha...barf), but I liked Paul Rudd. I agree with whoever said his timing is spot on. I thought he was hilarious.

I also appreciated that this movie didn't rely on your typical archetypes for the most part and refrained from relying on bitch ex, asshole other guy, peaches and cream alternative chick...

but Segal's character was clearly the typical lovable schlub who's the bread and butter of all the apatow/frat pack v. 2.0 movies. the total mess who just needs someone to love him for...him. i was just about over it as soon as he started eating cereal out of that big ass bowl.

I too wondered what they ever saw in each other, but I think all the happy pics of them and Kristen Bell's "I TRIED!" speech was supposed to be enough background, but I agree that it fell short.

especially to your comments on Brand. he was easily the best character in the film. and the most developed. he really could have fallen into that 'other guy' asshole role. but, he became likeable. he was rude, but human. he was a performer, but genuine. they really showed that he was a good guy when they were waiting for a table at the restaurant. the whole "seriously, it's okay...we can wait. its no problem"

id love to see a movie around that character.

btw, the montage of his sexxing of Bell, concluding with the full bridge he did while she was mounted, was easily the funniest part of the movie for me.

I mean, all those flicks give focus to superfluous characters, and they all had bits that went on longer than they should... but something about the editing/direction in this flick made it seem more disjointed than 40YOV/Knocked Up/Superbad.

Also, and I love Jason Segel, but the writing just wasn't as consistent. It wasn't as filled with wall-to-wall laughs as the others.

Now granted, I still enjoyed the hell out of it, and laughed fairly consistently throughout the entire flick... but it's definitely in the second-tier of the Apatow Camp flicks.

as much as i like freaks and geeks, theres something about most apatow movies that rub me the wrong way. and more than everything outlined in this breakdown (which i happen to also agree with), i feel like his movies, including his latest, embrace a culture thats moderately racist, and expressly sexist and homophobic, which is then imposed on viewers, and must be accepted if they want to enjoy the film.
