There's some funny stuff in the movie, and Mila Kunis is a FAR better choice of woman than Kristen Bell, but... yeah. The movie was a bit too idiosyncratic for me... everything from the editing of the scene buttons (that means the ending joke of a scene) to some of the shot selection was odd to me...
I could have done without the extended Jonah Hill cameo, as well as the Paul Rudd surfer dude. I don't think you needed them. And an argument COULD be made that we didn't need McBrayer either, but he's just so goddamn funny to watch that I'm giving him a pass, lol...
And while it was great that Segel took decent pains to not paint Kristen Bell's character as a total bitch, it just felt like something was missing from her character...
On the other hand, I thought Russell Brand's character and performance of said character was just about perfect. And I also like the fact that, while he was a cad, he still wasn't an asshole to Segel or a lech to Kunis... he was just a goofy-ass rock star bloke who was smart enough to know when he was getting played out... I thought that was a nice change-of-pace from the usual romantic comedy Dickhead Other Guy...
Now, I dug all of the characters (even the ones that we didn't necessarily need), but I just had a very tough time understanding what it was that made him stay with her for 5 years, and vice-versa. I mean, we see him holding her purse at premieres, and wearing her hideous clothing gifts, but I just had a hard time understanding what exactly it was that drew these two people together in the first place. How did they meet? How did they fall for each other? That was stuff I needed to know in order to buy Segel's heartache...
And yeah, I'm sure a few of you will run in here and declare that a lot of the situations were "real" and "painfully real," so that made them "great" and "extra funny"... fair enough (that dinner scene with Segel, Kunis, Bell and Brand was very funny), but everything just didn't come together as a completely satisfying story for me...
And also, as to the question of whether this was as long as Superbad... yes, actually, it was (it ran 1:51; Superbad ran 1:58), and didn't fly by as quickly as Superbad did, imo... the last 15-20 minutes were INTERMINABLE... I could have done without the 4 endings we had...
I guess ultimately, I liked the characters, but the story itself fell a bit short for me... ________________________________________________________________________ I'm so happy Doin' the neutron dance I'm just burnin' Doin' the neutron dance Woo hoo
