Actor Heath Ledger Is Found Dead

By Sewell Chan

The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment building at 421 Broome Street in SoHo, according to the New York City police. Mr. Ledger was 28.

At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities. The police said they did not suspect foul play and said they found pills near body.

Mr. Ledger, a native of Perth, Australia, won acclaim for his role as a co-star in “Brokeback Mountain”, a 2005 film. The film, based on a short story by Annie Proulx about two cowboys who fall in love, won critical acclaim. Reviewing the film in The New York Times, the critic Stephen Holden wrote, “Mr. Ledger magically and mysteriously disappears beneath the skin of his lean, sinewy character. It is a great screen performance, as good as the best of Marlon Brando and Sean Penn.”

Thomas J. Lueck contributed reporting.

Never hung out at the clubs or did any other extraness...

... in other words, this wasn't a Brad Renfro-type situation

And apparently he was having depression issues

I don't know if we can attribute that to any kind of particular lifestyle

I really don't wanna hear that this is a drug overdose or a suicide, but it doesn't really look like it'll be anything but one of the two.

I guess this is what it would've felt like if River Phoenix had been a little older when he passed. We still got some amazing stuff from Heath, but really, he was a pup. Really sad for his little girl too.

that he was really having trouble sleeping, because he was so wound up and into this demonic and edgy character (early word on The Dark Knight is to flush that somewhat-campy Jack Nicholson version of the Joker out of your heads)

Ledger told him that he was taking Ambien, but it wasn't working

This was just reported on Headline News

that dude just couldn't sleep and may have oded trying to take enough meds to get himself there. I think i saw the same thing on headline news, and they said he was currently filming another movie with a very demonic, joker-esque character, was in pirth, austrailia just 5 days ago, and possibly in london filming in between then and now.

damn. this news was pretty shocking though. RIP

Regarding Heath's work as The Joker in THE DARK KNIGHT

Hey folks, Harry here... There's a lot of rumors swirling around right now in regards to Heath and where his involvement with THE DARK KNIGHT was. I got it confirmed from a source involved in Post-Production on THE DARK KNIGHT. Heath's post work was complete. He had indeed finished it, as to not interfere with the production of the film he was doing with Gilliam. We're now working to find out what's going to happen there. The last known photo of Heath was as a clown in that film. Will Terry re-cast? What will happen? We'll try to find out for all of you. But there will be no-dubbing on Heath in THE DARK KNIGHT - his performance was finished.

Harry
....

RIP Heath Ledger he was a great talent and will be missed.

He was (and if he wasn't already, would become) a great actor..
Whatever people thought of brokeback, his performance was good,
the small part he had in monster's ball, he did well
Now I think of it, his last couple of parts have been complicated 'tormented' characters..but anyway

this news saddens me... Rest In Peace Heath Ledger

Honestly, I'm glad his performance as Joker is complete though. Though I'm sure his family could care less about that right now.

Accidental OD.

He was found in a sleeping position. Suicides (in this city anyway) usually are not found like this. The Rx meds were throughout the house, not just piled next to him and weren't emptied out. There was no visible note. Nothing about the scene said suicide.

True fact: His death is NO sadder, more tragic or more horrible than any of the other deaths yesterday. There will be no posts or repeated news coverage about the young man WITH a child that was shot and killed in Chelsea on Friday night, nor about the any other deaths this past weekend where the victim had NO hand in their life ending....unlike this genius who CHOOSE to mix medications that are CLEARLY marked to not take with other sedatives or alcohol. Vicodin and Ambien?.....Come on, dog.

Fuck celebrity status and it's corresponding media coverage.

It's only sad that a young man died and it was because of stupidity.

if it was just the net or solely on designated channels, i swear i wouldn't give fudge. but i am SO G.D. sick of all the news coverage dedicated to celebrities and their lives. it's inescapable. You know, two of our newspapers here (nyc) are just unreadable to me because the put crap on the front page like Tom Brady in a walking splint or some other menial celeb story with NO importance. Sometimes there is no escape from it.

I just get to express myself here.

How do you know all this? I mean, if you're basing this on speculation or whatever the media has to say at this early stage, calling him stupid seems a BIT inappropriate at this point, don't you think? He could have had an allergic reaction. We don't know anything.

It's perfectly natural for people to get more worked up about the dead celebrity than the dead stranger. If you've seen their movies, you feel like you know them on some personal level. It's completely understandable.

I perfectly understand the personal connection a fan may feel towards a entertainer after admiring their work for a period of time, especially anybody who actually creates in their artform, I.E. an MC. but, i don't feel this is the case most of the time. usually, it seems that anybody with ANY amount of celebrity will receive an excessive amount of airtime and attention in the media, even those outlets that should be focused on ACTUAL news. Ledger was just an actor. You see him in a movie, then the movie is over and you go home. it's not like peeps have some deep connection to him or other people on his level.

And i know what i was talking about because i know the crew that was on scene at his crib. I work NYC EMS. i've seen so incidents with my own eyes, then when i hear the news coverage of it, and i'm like "WTF? where the hell did they come up with that?" i've even been misquoted in the bullshit-ass paper we have here. don't believe the initial media reports about MOST shit, man.

about news coverage of celebrities, and your right to express yourself, your post is terribly inconsiderate, unecessary, and in bad taste. I should hope that when you die the first thing out of someone's mouth is not an indictment of your mistakes or a system that you were part of but had no control over.

if i die solely because of my own conscious actions and a lack of respect for life, then i don't expect pity. i see people day in & day out that want to live, but may not and have had NO say in their outcome. I've become quite cynical over the years and don't have much sympathy when a person makes a conscious choice with disregard for their own well being. Too many people never get a choice.

As for my statements, even though this is a technically public forum, i like to think of the boards as an extended group of peers almost like a locker room. i highly doubt any of Ledger's fam will be reading my posts. now if i had something to say that could be considered insensitive about the OKP artists, i wouldn't think of saying it here. Not because of fear....it just wouldn't appropriate to say it here.

I'm not a completely heartless man though. As i said before, it is still sad that a young man is dead.

the whole point of your entire post seems to be anger at heath not having respect for life, which for one, you do not have enough info on the man to make anything except an ill informed judgment on, and two, you seem to feel the need to express this by showing no respect for a life that has been lost. A man died here. Why do you find it necessary to talk shit? Can we not just mourn a life lost, regardless of whether there are other lives that are lost everyday? Do you think we are not aware of them? Do you think we do not care? The fact of the matter is it seems you do not care about life as you say, for if you truly did, you would be saddened by any life lost, regardless of who lived it.

I use to be like you, when a celebrity dies I would question peoples reaction of why do they need more attention? why not my friend who died from cancer or my other friend who was stab to death. I finally came to conclusion, that death in any form of medium or situation should be respected. Whether it's the dude who's getting shot because he did a crime or the young infant who died in the hospital due to health conditions. I think with celebrities we look to them as these immortals, because of they're movies and music we have this subconscious thought that they'll always live on. Look at James Dean and Jimi Hendrix, they'll always live on in our thoughts, heck they inspired young hearts. But I know what you're saying, hundreds and hundreds die every day and where's their coverage in the news?? if the news shows every death on T.V. you know how many depressing people will be out there? not only that, there's plenty of negative things out there (i.e. War in Iraq) I guess showing Heath Ledger death just shows he's only human and that having such an artist pass during his prime probably lets us think of ourselves and our future. OR it's just another dude dead. But all said and done, all I'm tryin' to say, respect the man.

alright, excuse my spelling and grammatic errors.

My First and foremost point.....Eat a Dick.

Second...this is a board about movies and tv......entertainment....not celebrity worship and gossip. That's what TMZ is for.

i didn't start my comments bashing celebrities. I was pretty clear in my statements before.

Don't forget the first point.

I couldn't help but wonder about that either after I saw it. And now they're showing an interview where he's talking about idolizing Nick Drake & how he wanted to tell his story at some point. It sounds like he idolized Kurt Cobain as well. Very eerie.
