OK not really. Still one of the review blurbs on Rottentomatoes said Bloody disappointing and all I could think was, "Who in the world went into that film with any expectations?"

Don't I get credit?

The film is funny, but honestly the cut I saw was 10 minutes too long.

But Daryl from the Office steals the show. Trust me, math is FUNNY.

This is the no-brainer must see. And your girl will like it too.

Possible spoilers.

Posted: 25 Feb 2007 09:36 pm Post subject: "Knocked Up" was good (feedback from the Arclight)
A few suggestions of where the work print didn't exactly work:

1. When Ben is talking to Alison on the phone that ends in the second date being arranged - well it didn't exactly work for me. Alison went from confused/scared/angry to relieved/nervous/hopeful too quickly. Either have Ben says better things OR show that Alison's hormonal issues are already affect her mood.

2. When Ben and Pete come back from Cirque and have the conversation on the bed - well, Ben's transformation seems a little to quick. Pete's obsession with the chairs OVERshadows Ben's emotions.

3. During the period when Ben and Alison don’t talk I'd like to see a conversation between Ben and someone talking about how he is feeling. Maybe just a few lines somewhere to give us a better idea of how long Ben is out of the picture. Maybe another quick scene with Ramis? Or in a montage type thing?

4. The transformation of Dr. Kuni from super dick to professional seemed to be missing something too. Was he hormonal?? He went from being a control freak that was upset with control freaks to being a completely professional doctor. Did I miss something?

5. Keep the vaginal crowning shots *IN*. I know there's about 1 shot in 1,000 of that actually getting on the screen, but try to keep that in.

Overall the film was really really funny. But cut one of the shoebomber references, I’d suggest the Richard Reid one from Ben's roommates. Let Alison have that one.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD - DO NOT PUT THE BOUNCER IN THE TRAILER!!!!! Save that one for the movie. That scene was a true treat. Let audiences discover in the movie. It was such a surprise. It's a "Paul Riser being crushed by a Dempsey Dumpster in One Night at McCools" type scene. If the paul Riser thing was not in the McCools trailer then McCools may have been one of the funniest films of 2001.

I'll be at the theater for the commercial release.

Paul Rudd has completely won me over. I thought him & Jeremy Sisto were the biggest dweebs in the world when I saw them in Clueless but both of them have impressed me since then. Especially Pauly. He's stole a ton of scenes in Anchorman, 40 year old virgin & now this.

gonna go home; 45 minute power nap; shower; eat dinner; grab tix for the 10:30 p.m. showing; then see it.

ive been hyped for this for so long, i remember being hyped when it was still called "Untitled Judd Apatow Project" and the only cast member was Seth Rogen, and a rumored Jessica Alba role.

3) You have no idea who Judd Apatow or Seth Rogen is

4) You aren't aware that the comedy revolution is going to be televised... in Canada

I haven't seen 40yo Virgin, though I love Steve Carell.

I did like Ron Burgundy and Fun with Dick and Jane.

And I haven't been to Canada in like, two years. But I liked Vancouver. If that's Canadian enough.

great one liners, great situations, everyone acts their ass off, you care about the characters, you get a solid male and female p.o.v.

a bit long though.

but yeah shit was golden. The only downside is the audience didn't catch some of the smarter jokes and the moving montage.

but yeah it was the best shit i seen this summer

Did they cut the "I'll just pretend I'm a giant shopping for regular clothes" line that was in the trailer? It's possible I missed it. As someone else said, there was a lot of laughter and I missed some dialogue here and there.

Of course if you agree and you haven't seen Freaks and Geeks, RUN, don't walk to Bbuster/Netflix/torrents.
Seth pulled off the lead.

But because they were busy being dickheads, having audible conversations, fidgeting with candy wrappers, etc

No, I ain't a snitch

Yes, I got a refund

But the parts I could focus on and hear were pretty damn funny

I was grinning from the Universal logo onward
(Using ODB's Shimmy Shimmy Ya, featuring the lyric "Ooo baby, I like it raw" is a funny joke in and of itself)

I thought Leslie Mann stole the movie

With Kristen Wiig (who, btw, plays the same character on SNL) a close second

And Heigl is damn pretty... but it's an odd, awkward kind of pretty to me

My initial reaction was that it wasn't as funny as 40 Year-Old Virgin, but like I said, I have to see it again in a more civilized setting just to be sure

(renovated or no, the Universal Citywalk theaters are still shitty... *hands self an L*)

I agreed with a review that said it would have been nice to see if Alison had any friends, beside those three catty chicks she saw outside the baby store

Because the movie's called Knocked Up, not Oh Snap I Knocked This Chick Up, Dudes

Yeah, it's mostly Ben's story, but Alison's equally important, no?

Minor quibbles aside, I was laughing

Also, no love for Ryan Seacrest's rant? I thought it was funnier than just "Ooh, Ryan Seacrest's CUSSIN'!"

And again:
Apatow. Learn the name, and love it.

But folks were actually pretty well-behaved.

>I was grinning from the Universal logo onward
>(Using ODB's Shimmy Shimmy Ya, featuring the lyric "Ooo baby,
>I like it raw" is a funny joke in and of itself)

When I heard "nigger you can't even sing" I almost jumped up out of my seat and started Negro-moshing like we used to do to Onyx back in college. That whole opening sequence was perfect.

>I thought Leslie Mann stole the movie

She's got some serious chops. Her and Craig Robinson going toe to toe outside of that club was classic.

>And Heigl is damn pretty... but it's an odd, awkward kind of
>pretty to me

It's like she was created in a factory. So, I recognize that she's attractive, but she just doesn't do much for me. Kind of like how I feel about the Toyota Camry.

>My initial reaction was that it wasn't as funny as 40 Year-Old
>Virgin, but like I said, I have to see it again in a more
>civilized setting just to be sure

I feel the same way. But then again, I thought Virgin was one of the best comedies of the past 20 years.

>I agreed with a review that said it would have been nice to
>see if Alison had any friends, beside those three catty chicks
>she saw outside the baby store

That takes Apatow further away from what he clearly does best. Writing hilarious grown up slacker guy dialogue. Pass.

>Also, no love for Ryan Seacrest's rant? I thought it was
>funnier than just "Ooh, Ryan Seacrest's CUSSIN'!"

I just kept thinking, "Damn. Seacrest might weigh less than Katherine Heigl."

I love that stuff, but I think his real strength, as also displayed in Knocked Up, is his Freaks and Geeks (e.g., Chokin' and Tokin'; Dead Dogs and Gym Teachers; etc.) and Undeclared writing and sensibilities.

thought everyone's acting was on point, especially paul rudd. he was hilarious, and the first time he said he had to go see a band, the way he was saying his lines really reminded me of him doing andy from wet hot american summer. "i mean... i just gotta go" or whatever he said.

this movie had a hella lot of pop culture references, which were funny, but i think 10 years from now its gonna make it look really dated.

also, i can see ranger surplus stores situated near college campuses experiencing a huge rise in gas mask sales. lol

like a lot of movies, it sort of dragged around the 3/4 mark, but overall, thought it was a very enjoyable flick. another winner from that team.

In response to Reply # 0

Loved it. It wasn't perfect, but classics or masterpieces don't need to be perfect.

- Loved the constant mixing of Apatow's 1) Freaks and Geeks-Undeclared writing and sensibilities and 2) the obscene-bawdy-frat boy 40-YOV and other Apatow-produced joints.

- Loved the ultrasound inserts throughout and the accompanying song. Shit made my eyes well up...no falling tears-o. It added to the impending feeling hovering over Ben and Allison.

- Shimmy Shimmy Ya over the Universal logo and throughout the opening? Instant entry into one of the best movie openings ever list. (After the song faded out or cut, some dude yelled out, "Fuck yea, Busta Rhymes.")

- The movie avoided the same ol', same ol' trap. Easier said than done. Making a poignant comedy w/o sappiness is a gift. Cherish this movie, people. (Yeah, yeah, it's not the only one, but still...)

- Apatow's visual sensibility seems to have stepped up from 40 YOV (e.g., great 2-shot of Ben and Alison going through his stuff after the earthquake).

- The bawdiness of the male protag's friends was a little hit-and-miss for me (it's all good, though, sometimes I laughed when nobody laughed; sometimes everyone else laughed when I didn't), but when it hit...it hit. As whole, I think the guys in 40 YOV were funnier, but here I can understand their role/function. Like I said, they did kill me (lots of times).

- Scorsese on coke. Pink eye visual joke (not so much the explanation)....other shit I can't recall off the top...

- Mann and Rudd brought the goods! Heigl was impressive especially at the OBGYN after pregnancy confirmation. Wiig killed it. Fuck some of this Rogen bashing on the 'net, he was great.

- The 129 minutes felt like 85 minutes.

- Didn't feel much of the 'shrooms sequence. But, did love the chairs and especially the one w/ the energy.

- Some of the joke digressions were, well, digressive as fuck. Wasn't feelin' the pubs and Hawkings ones.

- I'm amazed that people still find the "poking the baby in the eye" stuff funny. People were dying, man.

but it tried to turn into a romantic comedy instead of just a straight-up comedy. I was laughing my ass off every 2 seconds during the first 45 minutes of the movie, but from then on they tried to turn it into a more serious movie. The problem is, the main character isn't that good when he's not doing comedy. And I think that's the difference between this movie and Wedding Crashers, is that Wilson et al. can at least hold down a movie that's not 100% laughs.

Overall I'd give it a B+...I'm only disappointed because it had potential to be an A+. Very good movie.

that said...

yeah, it was as good as i hoped it would be. maybe even better.

Kristin Wiig (sp?)--best c-list character; followed by seacrest

K, about F&G/Undeclared connections, besides the obvious ones, who else noticed Jay Baruchel's Undeclared dad Loudon Wainwright III (yes, Rufus' dad) as the doctor? i was so happy to see him there.

Ryan the Temp had a pretty funny cameo.

The asian Doctor was hilarious.

Jason Segel continues to prove to me the he is one of the most underrated comedic-actor working.

One thing i havent seen mentioned in this post was its obvious connections to Swingers.

the way i saw this movie from the opening scene to the end was as this decade's Swingers. its the kind of movie that every guy can relate to in some way. It had that unbelievable male comradory and uncensored bantor. Then there was the Vegas scene in the car "we're so money, we dont even know how much money we have" or something to that extent.

i loved this movie. and everyone involved. Apatow could basically film these guys staring at a wall for 2 hours and their respective personalities would find away to shine through and be hilarious.

cant wait for Superbad.

apatow says he cast his kids because most child actors are very leaden, so he put his kids in the flick so it was like they were just talking to their mom. but then he goes onto say he hopes they never act again and is, in fact, trying to make them forget the experience and is trying to convince them they had never been in a movie to begin with

Author sues 'Knocked Up' director
A Canadian author claims the movie is a knockoff of her book.
By Associated Press

June 7, 2007

A Canadian author has sued NBC Universal and director Judd Apatow claiming they ripped off the premise of the hit movie "Knocked Up" from her book of the same name.

In an article for Maclean's magazine this month, Calgary-based author Rebecca Eckler details similarities between her book and the film, in which an up-and-coming TV reporter gets drunk at a party and then gets pregnant from a one-night stand.

Eckler writes that in her 2004 book, she's an up-and-coming newspaper reporter who gets drunk and "knocked up" after celebrating at her engagement party.

She claims that while pitching her book to Hollywood producers, she learned of Apatow's project and the script, which she says had on it a picture of a martini glass with a pacifier around the stem — the same as the cover of her book.

Apatow said in a statement through his representatives that the book and film were very different.

"Anyone who reads the book and sees the movie will instantly know that they are two very different stories about a common experience," said the statement, posted on celebrity Web site TMZ.com.

The lawsuit claiming copyright infringement was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles in January and seeks unspecified damages.

"Knocked Up" starring Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen debuted last weekend in second place with $30.6 million.

In response to Reply # 0

Heigl, Rudd and Mann were good

Rogen was okay - not a huge fan

Judd Apatow really needs to edit his movies better...you could have cut an easy 15 minutes off this one (just like Virgin) and not missed a thing

but he does seem to strike a warm sensibility with his movies w/o being too cheesy

although I have grown a little tired with his "see how many times we can just have vulgar words be the punchline"

Seth Rogen is not a hilarious guy -- he's got some funny lines, but not a lead comedy actor IMO

the whole premise is retarded (I know, it's a *movie*)

good flick to catch with your girl on a weekday but I've seen people announce this as a "new classic"

I may be in the minority, but I didnt find 40 year old virgin to be that funny...and this imo blew it out of the fucking placenta.

The jokes were hilarious, the Vegas scene was just comedy, the Doc Brown scene had me DYING(plus Back to the future is possibly my fav movie of all-time), the fantasy baseball part hit very close to home(I can def see myself doing that once married, we hold 14 hour drafts and shit for fantasy football), the Transamaerica line was comedy, it was just straight out comedy. The only part I really didnt find that funny was the over-utilized cussing for jokes part when Rogen was calling the doctor, its just too easy of a laugh imo.

The fat jewish cat was the best cat in the movie imo, every line he uttered had me crying. GREAT movie.

Right now it seems like I loved Knocked Up more, probably because I laughed harder and felt more for the characters than I did in Virgin. Plus, having seen Virgin about 3 or 4 times now, I know some things are coming before they happen and it lessens the laugh factor a bit.

I think this might hold out in the long run. It feels like the stronger film overall. And it's going to have some amazing outtakes and deleted scenes on the DVD (at least it should).

And those scenes in the delivery room? Incredibly realistic. The argument between Allison and Dr. Kuni was classic OB stuff. I swear that happened every damn day on my OB rotation. I guess it helps when you have a real MD playing your doctor.

or even second....i gotta watch it again, cause while i loved the story and whatnot, it wasn't nearly as funny as i'd hoped...i don't think i laughed too much from the scenes wit alla Ben's friends, the jokes just didn't hit wit me...even him gettin a job came outta nowhere for me, cause i never heard anything about him having marketable skills..like i said, i liked it, but it's not the crew's best work, and that's ok....it DID continue work wit the higher bar "40 yr old virgin" set, which is brilliant all in itself...

didn't he make her smile tho that first night? she was happy, felt comfy, and took a chance after gettin drunk...she didn't really know what she'd gotten into til the next day..AND, like many women i know hoped that dude would change his ways, which he did...most women i know don't 'really' care about looks when it comes down to it...they really want a dude they feel safe wit...i dunno, the relationship part of the movie seemed realistic...even her kickin him out in the street cause she overreacted...and i really didn't see her fighting to stay wit Ben...it was more like she tried to keep an open mind about all his faults, but later on she realized dude needed to be 'more'...ad he became that for his fam...

"40" is the best all around comedy in...well, decades (yeah..since the 80's....i never get tired of watching that movie...as comedies go, it's gotta be damn near perfect...

second in command is Anchorman, and the ONLY reason it isn't #1 is cause for me the movie isn't about the storyline as much as it is about a series of great jokes and funny moments..."40" was able to be really funny and tell a cool story, a pretty unique story...

Wedding Crashers didn't really grab me, Old School is great, but some of the recent stuff is simply better....i'd put Talledega at #4 cause it's hillarious, but not as funny or well put together as 40, Knocked (well, Talledega was funnier), or Anchorman...

and the "pregnant stomach" paddings and prosthetics were hideous, but I literally laughed my ass off.

The mushrooms
the Yoko Ono-ish girlfriend of the long-haired dude
"go fuck your bong"
the neat twist on the overly familiar "we gone go catch my cheatin' husband in the act" bit
"I can only let in 5% black people. So if 25 people showed up at the door, I could only let in 1.25 black people", the bitchy female exec at E!

and damn near everything Ben says...

...it was almost too much, man.
