"Your top five documentaries."
Wed Jan-30-08 12:46 AM by Triptych

Or ten if you can think of them.

It's hard for me to judge documentaries because I can't really decide if I should attempt to ignore the subject matter while doing so. Should I rate Planet Earth over The Corporation because I like nature more than business? Anyway, here are mine:

1. The Devil and Daniel Johnston
================================
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436231/
On the (SEVERELY) manic/depressive genius songwriter, artist, and musician.

2. The War Room
===============
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108515/
On Bill Clinton's 1992 presidental campaign (and Carville the mad scientist)

3. The Weather Underground
==========================
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0343168/
On the eponymous revolutionary faction of the 60's/70's

4. Planet Earth
===============
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0795176/
On the planet earth.

5. The Fog of War
=================
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317910/
An interview with Robert McNamara, SecDef during the Vietnam War, about modern warfare.

Honorable Mentions:

Grey Gardens
Sicko
Through The Fire
Winged Migration
March of the Penguins
The Bridge

I remember not having much interest at the time in American History but this Documentary and then Glory coming out around the same time (I think) had me on a civil war kick for a good few years.

anyway, my top 5 off the top

born into brothels - lil kids born in calcutta's red light district are taught photography

buena vista social club - great "lost" cuban musicians brought out of obscurity by ry cooder and wim wenders

night and fog - holocaust. the greatest documentary ever.

burden of dreams - werner herzog in south america filming fitzcarraldo. nuff said.

american movie - weird dude in wisconsin and his weird friends take like 10 years to make a shitty horror film. classic and hilarious, also sad.

shouts out to crumb, when the levees broke, and grizzly man.

Just curious: Do you just feel like there are far worse and more important things that happen in this world than two kids not making it to the NBA? You know, like big deal, welcome to the real world, who cares?

but more than that, i didnt find the subjects all that compelling

i read a book of similar subject matter in middle school about the Marbury family that really hit hard. Stephon was 14 in the book, so he aint make it yet, but his brothers had all fallen victim to this, that or the other...so i just feel like i'd already heard the story, told in a more compelling way, with more heartbreaking subject matter.

the audacity of filming (and editing!) FIVE YEARS of two peoples' lives...

it shows how simple choices and acts of fate can alter lives in drastic ways.

it shows how much the cards are stacked against the poor in this country.

it's a perfect snapshot of America in the late 80's.

this is one of those defining movies for me...i can't really relate to anyone who doesn't love it (let alone even like it!?!?)

My brain is being a jerk today, and I didn't want to just cherry pick from everyone else's lists, so here's a list that will most definitely change once my brain finishes it's extended fart.

Hoop Dreams (The GOAT?)
Riding Giants (Boy is this one fun.)
Rivers and Tides (It was just so creatively inspiring.)
Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (Interesting, but honestly, to me it was just very, very funny.)
Eternal Enemies: Lions and Hyenas (Currently beating out Winged Migration for my nature doc slot. I honestly, honestly think Scorcese or someone should remake as a story about two rival gangs. Of humans, I mean.)

Once again, extremely non-definitive.

EDIT: Jeez. Grizzly Man and King of Kong. Duh.

Maybe I shouldn't be, but it's interesting to me that we all seem to agree that the best documentaries have come in the last 15 or 20 years... many of which are in the last 10.

Any good theories on why that is?

Newer stuff gets a bump.

Although I'd also guess that the documentary format has become more and more popular over the years, so maybe there are just more contemporary stuff to choose from

Maybe technological advances have created new possibilities for documentary makers?

I also think that contemporary documentaries just work a lot harder to be accessible crowd pleasers. Which doesn't mean they're superior, but it certainly means they'll resonate with a broader part of the movie-going population. But I could see how many could see it as a bad thing that documentary makers are imposing narrative on their films, usually to more of a degree than is actually there. It's like, I know I should like Grey Gardens more than King of Kong, but I don't. (I did really like it, though.)

I think it's easier to hear about recent/contempo documentaries w/o really trying than to hear about the older and classic and/or great documentaries in the same manner.

There are only a few older documentaries that I can think of right now that's really popular in terms of that it's easy for a majority of people (not taking film classes) to hear/read about w/o actively looking for a doc:

Nanook of the North
Triumph of the Will
Olympia
Gimme Shelter
Thin Blue Line

It's not as easy to come hear/read about by coming across them "inactively" the great works of early Frederick Wiseman and Johan van der Keuken, other Maysles, or Kazuo Hara. Or, like, important figures like Humphrey Jennings, Ivens, or Vertov. (Some of their works can be found on Netflix except for Wiseman.)

Once can hear more about recent docs strictly from DVD previews.

That's just a theory, though.

I hate to say it, but actually I was bored for like 85% of the time, but there are 3 or 4 moments that outweighs the other 85% making it a favorite of mine.

Too many honorable mentions, but:

Sans Soleil -
barely a documentary probably not one at all, but if I could have fit this film essay-travelogue-documentary in my list it would rank @ #5.

Anyone up for something different?:

Mysterious Object at Noon -
A mix of documentary and Exquisite Corpse (Surrealist storytelling) that blurs fiction and non-fiction. Enigmatic.

Haha, sup!

I haven't seen everything you listed, but lots of 'em are great choices. Thanks for pointing me to Hearts and Minds way back.

I forgot to honorably mention The Bridge (Steel, 06), but a few posters have mentioned it. If you haven't seen it, try that one first. You will be fucked up.

Library? Torrents? Try to track down the same director's (Frederick Wiseman) other docs like Welfare, Hospital, and Law & Order. All thought of in high regard critically as Titicut Follies and High School. I unfortunately don't have access to W, H, and L&O yet. Might spring for the DVDs soon. He burns on 'em DVD-Rs himself.

My pleasure.

See Post 66 about more Frederick Wiseman docs.

Johan van der Keuken's The Eye Above The Well should be in my top 10, too. It's on Disc 2 of the van der Keuken Volume 1 DVD set.

His The Long Holiday is supposed to be great, too. It's not on the DVD sets, though.

My top 5 could have easily been all Wiseman and van der Keuken.

It was the first Michael Moore movie where I finally got all the criticism of him.

Not for his portrayal of the US System, but his slanted depiction of foreign healthcare systems.

I find it difficult to rank documentaries, and to pick just 10 that represent my taste. But, here's an attempt:

1. Grey Gardens
2. Crumb
3. Brother's Keeper
4. Grizzly Man
5. Lost Boys of Sudan
6. An Inconvenient Truth
7. Streetwise
8. Okie Noodling
9. Bowling For Columbine
10. Winged Migration

And honorable mentions to:

Hoop Dreams, Spellbound, 4 Little Girls, Born Into Brothels, American Movie, Vernon Florida.

It's a documentary in hour-long parts, I forget exactly how many, 8 or 10, but if people can post Shoah, I can post that. It's a phenomenal look at the criminal justice system in North Carolina by following one high-profile case.

1.) CRUMB- I'll never tire of watching this glimpse into R. Crumb's world. His crazy brothers, the piggy back rides, the boot humping. And the drawings. And the music. Top recommendation!

2.) Jonestown (PBS)- Downloaded this last year on the strength of someones PTP post. Holy fucking shit is all I can say. So scary. I had only the most basic knowledge of these events before I watched this. Now I know way too much. Sad beyond words. Like someone above said, the last 20 minutes will floor you.

3.) 80 Blocks from Tiffany's- A look into the world of late 70s NYC street gang/police culture courtesy of the always great Esquire magazine's investigative journalism branch at the time. Plenty of dope characters and quotes ("I seen hand grenades on the streets man"). Great music. Block parties. Excellent beefs. Mostly starring members of the Savage Skulls and Savage Nomads. Motherfuckers in flying cut sleeves and nazi helmets. I love this shit. Not the deepest doc out there, but well worth a watch for the 70s NYC visuals alone.

4.) BUS 174- Not much more I can say about this one that hasn't been said here before. Absolutely riveting. I wish everyone would watch this.

5.) 5 has gotta be something HBO. I wish I could remember all the titles of powerful docs I've seen in the past. Maybe I'll go with something seminal like BANGIN IN LITTLE ROCK! Yeah, I think I will.

Honorable mentions:

-Grizzly Man
-Little Dieter Needs to Fly
-Riding Giants (fun indeed!)
-Endless Summer
-Style Wars
-Woodstock
-Dark Days
-Infamy

+so many more I cant recall right now

thanks for the heads up I just started to watch 80 blocks doc on the net last night. Great stuff, the slang, the fro's it's all so darn cool! Gonna finish watching it to night.

Bus 174 has to be seen to be believed. Tremendously moving.

I've seen the banging in little rock also as we have HBO channel in UK now......

I've seen so many documentaries on Jonestown and I learn something new everytime.

It didn't really progress beyond the concept...seemed like a good idea that just didn't go anywhere. I dig the Hughes Brothers, but American Pimp was just eh.

Also, rifling through this post, as well as the King of Kong post, I'd say that, with the exception of the music documentaries, that we're all picking documentaries that are far from objective and balanced, which some claim is the only way a documentary should be viewed or whatever...

i don't believe anyone has mentioned any of these yet:

freestyle
festival express
planet b-boy
bastards of the party
journeys with george
my architect
afro-punk
be good, smile pretty
don't look back
control room
startup.com
tupac: resurrection
the same river twice

if we're compiling the list of must-see docs for anyone interested in the genre, each of those are worth a watch.

i used to have a fav five, but i don't know that do anymore.

the single most important documentary of all-time, which is probably a separate topic, is bowling for columbine. if someone can make a case for another film, i'd like to hear it.

like i can't see them by myself i need crowd commentary to maintain my interest, almost i prefer the discussion(s) it brings about more than the doc itself
anyways

here it goes

cocaine cowboys
sicko
when the levees broke
jesus camp

There's an amazing nature doc we've discussed around here before about this pride of lions and this pack of hyenas that go back and forth on each other, I think its called "Eternal Enemies" or something like that.

It features the onem male lion who's sole mission on earth is to murk as many hyenas as he can. "For he is...the hyena killer"...If you've seen it you know what scene I'm talking about.

Just absolutely the most fascinating animal doc done by anyone not named David Attenborough.
