"Let's discuss: CROUCHING TIGER/HERO/FLYING DAGGERS (RACISM)"
Wed Jan-18-12 11:42 AM by Orbit_Established

Just saw all three. Yep, 3 of the best films of the last
decade and change. Don't be mad, its true.

How INFREQUENTLY they are mentioned and discussed is mostly
racism combined with insecurity from ARTSY FARTSIES like y'all.

a) You artsy fartsies only like obscure Asian films. Those
3 movies were too big budget and popular for y'all, even though
they are waaaaaay better than all these dumbass cult asian
movies that y'all like:

"Samurai FLower by Katasahafasfdasfshi Mitsiabusishiyazki
was riveting" (c) Average Okayplayer

Just stop.

b) Those movies had better special effects/more meaning/depth
than any pure hollywood big budget movie of the last 10 years.

Chinese know how to do big budget and meaningful. We don't.

I mean, 'Hero' was so well made it made you sympathize with
its (not so)hidden pro-Mao fascist message, for god's sakes. Its a fantastic fucking film. Masterpiece.

And I just saw MI:4 and visually its a snoozer compared to
'Hero'. Probably the most beautiful film I've ever seen in a
theater.

White people: You cannot direct as well as the Chinese. First
it was math. Now its film. Get over it.

Oh, and the the remake of 'Karate Kid' was a Chinese production
as well. Better than the American original <--it was, just stop,
we already had this debate.

Crouching Tiger probably got the biggest push for a foreign language movie ive seen in my lifetime. Hero & Flying Daggers were also heavily advertised(didn't have that oscar push tho like Tiger did which kept those commercials on the air for like three months). The problem is that after the initial critic hype they disappeared from all the lists.

Cinematography and acting wise the modern wuxia movies have been killing it but they still carry the 'kung fu film' burden...I ultimately think film critics subconsciously can't take it seriously even tho everything that makes a 'great' movie is there.

But they were trying the whole "Kung Fu movie" angle

LOL.

You're proving my point, dumbass.

I'm talking its LEGACY and how its AGED. Listing its
awards bolsters my central point.

Don't nobody talk about those films. Those films
should have revolutionized everything about film.

Those films basically solved the puzzle of how you
make big budget fancy shit that is good.

Left no legacy because white people don't want to
hear that shit. Period.

They still bankroll Michael Bay movies, which don't
look as good as the Chinese movies *and* suck rabbit
dick.

*two points for Orbit*

You act like dude was banished from Hollywood and written out of the history books.. In the decade following Crouching Tiger, he made a comic book action movie, a serious drama, a comedy about Woodstock, and has Life of Pi coming out this year. He's been nominated for Best Director oscars twice in the last 10 years.

Congratulations - you found a blog that said Crouching Tiger was overrated. I found one that said it's the second best foreign film of its decade: http://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/lists/2009/06/the-25-must-see-foreign-films-since-2000.html

It's legacy is a strong one. To this day people still consider it a masterpiece.

You're making up shit. And...dare I say...mad?

What was the point of bitching that they still bankroll Michael Bay movies if it wasn't to imply that they DON'T still bankroll Ang Lee movies? If that wasn't the point of comparison, what was?

The bottom line is, the vast majority of people still hold those movies in high regard, including OKPs, the Bohoes you bitched about in that Help post that flopped and sank like lead, latte-sipping critics, and Hollywood at Large.

Go take a warm (not hot) bubble bath, son.

I'm trying to get out of Tennessee by this summer (not including a short stint I'm doing in Iowa in April) and it's been more time consuming than I expected. I'm pretty comfortable with the conclusion that my skill set is not highly sought-after, but I walk around town with a permanent "somebody farted" look because people here seem literally unaware of existence of the few things I'm good at. That's just not a good way to be, at least not daily.

Ideally, we're DC-bound after this.

I liked "Hero" and "Crouching Tiger" quite a bit, but don't really have any base of knowledge about how they were received here and elsewhere. Though I did see the latter at a theater at the Mall of America, which makes it one of maybe less than a half-dozen subtitled movies I've seen in a big, fat movie theater and not someplace artsy that makes me look smart. But that's not really what you're asking.

How're you doing? How is Boston treating you?

Yeah, I know what that's like. When I feel similarly I take
the delusional asshole route.....of the "I'm ahead of my
time" variety. Juvenile but it builds a nice cushion around
the self esteem, which is probably the most precious thing we
have next to our health and sanity.

Strangely, my problem recently has been the opposite:

I don't actually feel very good at anything. This is
sometimes dictated by how others treat me, but often not.
Its mostly the product of self-reflection independent
of what the world thinks.

I'm not sure how to resolve the conflict of which I'd
rather be:

- Obviously talented but undervalued

- Good at nothing, but well-compensated and comfortable

I don't think I qualify as either but my current struggles
reflect some aspects of that debate.

>Ideally, we're DC-bound after this.

Fantastic. Like a second home to me. I have a friend who
owns a great restaurant there, you and your wife would
probably dig it. Let me know when you go.

Lol

Actually, quite good. My roommate is weird but not strange.
(as you can imagine, I've thought quite a bit about the
difference)

I like my neighborhood. I've concluded that Boston is definitely
not a good city for black men under 25, which is where it gets
a bad name from my demographic. For grownups of all hues, its
nice because it does calm things very well. It does bars well.
It does bar food VERY well. It does live music well. It does
coffee very well. I don't have the energy or patience to do
anything but the above for leisure and so its a perfect fit.

Work has been slow to get off the ground but I see progress
ahead (as in, I see how much harder I have to work to make
the progress, not so much that I just see the progress....which
is infinitely better than not knowing what to do to even be marginally incompetent)

I mean, it makes sense. The internal process of trying to do a job well or just to be good isn't really that pretty on a daily basis. People who aren't their own worst critic are kind of suspicious.

>Fantastic. Like a second home to me. I have a friend who

I will do that. Thank you.

I have a guess, but it's not a good one without specificity.

I rather like this distinction, and I really like the age-25 marker. It makes me like my gradually narrowing social life is now 8 years normal. You've made my evening with this.

Everybody I know who's ever expressed this has always been profoundly good at their job. It's the new-ish job problem.

Out of those three I've only seen Crouching Tiger, but I'm tempted to extend this to foreign films in general. It's as if when they come out people say "Hey! You gotta watch this! Nobody is doing stuff like this in America! It's real innovative!" and everybody loves it when it first comes out, but then when we're discussing legacy/best of the decade/all-time lists it's tough for some people to place them (myself included). Maybe award shows and such have ingrained in us that these are great FOREIGN films, not simply great films, so we can't think of them outside of that category. This doesn't apply to everybody mind you, and I don't blame PTP artsy fartsies, but I personally just expect more love for these films at the end of the decade or on all-time lists than they get.

I've actually thought this about Pan's Labyrinth for a while. I personally didn't connect with the film, but for the hype it got when it came out I would've expected it to be on more end of decade lists, or maybe just higher on the lists it was on . It didn't seem like Let the Right One In (one of my favorites of the decade) was included on any, and that film was fantastic. But Crouching Tiger probably took the biggest drop, it's barely even mentioned today. To a degree I think it's tougher for films that come out at the beginning of the decade, but I still would've expected more love.

This is part of my argument:

People say they got "tired of those kind of movies"
which is basically just racism.

We watch TRILOGIES all the time.

The Lord of the Rings movies were good, but they
were long and tiresome too by the same definition

CTHD, Hero, FD were THREE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MOVIES
and people *still* say "Oh, I was tired of that shit
by the the time Flying Daggers came out."

Really? People just need to say what they mean:

"I was tired of looking at Chinese people in long
movies."

We can do it for white people. We can watch Michael
J Fox. We can do it for Hobbits. We can do it for
Harrison Ford.

But not Chinese people.

Its blatant racism.

Sorry.

Those updated rankings (to account for critics' 2011 movie lists) are pulled from the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? site which basically collects lists from predominantly white critics from movie criticism publications like Village Voice, Film Comment, Sight & Sound, indieWire, etc.... http://theyshootpictures.com/21stcentury_allfilms.htm ........ for what it's worth, on that same compiled list, Lord of the Rings:ROTK ranks 28th, Lord of the Rings:FOTR ranks 33rd, and LOTR:Two Towers ranks 57th.

Crouching has placed really well (higher than all 3 Lord of the Rings movies). Hero's rank is much worse than I thought it would be. I thought it would place higher than House of Flying Daggers.

OKPs did a movies of the decade poll in 2009 and only 18 OKPs participated but for shits and giggles:

Crouching ranked 12th with votes by 11 OKPs
Hero ranked 46th with only 4 votes
Daggers didn't make the top 60 and only appeared on 2 ballots

Crouching made Time Magazine's top 10 of the past decade along with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Avatar, Wall-E, Slumdog, Moulin Rouge, etc., but I think only Time movie critics participated in that which is just a handful.

So ALL 3 LORD OF THE RINGS MOVIES made the top 10, meaning
people didn't get TIRED or weren't WORN OUT by a bunch of
white elves and hobbits, but only ONE of the Chinese epics
made it, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE FILMS ARE COMPLETELY

It actually DIS-proves your point that people are no longer talking about those movies. Crouching Tiger ended up on fucking TIME magazine's TOP 10 FILMS OF THE DECADE, which included all genres and countries of origin. It has a strong legacy. It's aged well. People talk about them.

This is specifically why I mentioned the THREE OF THEM
in my ORIGINAL POST, dumbass. I talked about them as a
SERIES of epics.

As a SERIES they get shit on. That white people liked
the FIRST ONE is proof: white people got TIRED of
watching Asian epics...CTHD isn't even the best one of
the 3...its only considered the best because it was
FIRST.

My point is proven by HOW MUCH MORE HIGHLY REGARDED
it is than the other two. It makes no sense. Its only
regarded that way because white people weren't TIRED of
it.

Note how white people DID NOT GET TIRED of the LOTR
Trilogy. Note that they regarded the LAST ONE OF THE
TRILOGY as the best. Why? Because the LOTR trilogy
had white elves and hobbits and white people don't get
tired of them like they do ACTUAL HUMAN Asians.

'RACISM.

Note how white people (and every other kind of people) DID get tired of The Godfather trilogy, the Star Wars trilogy, the Back to the Future trilogy, the Matrix trilogy, the Saw series, the Jaws sequels, the Indiana Jones series, and the list goes on. Oh, and the FIRST in pretty much each of those cases is considered a CLASSIC (except for Saw.)

In each and every single one of those cases, the THIRD is considered the WORST, or in the case of Indiana Jones, the FOURTH is considered the worst, or in the case of SAW, they get considered shittier and shittier as they go. It's almost universally accepted when dealing in sequels and franchises that the FIRST is usually the BEST and interest generally declines over time.

Many people call Casino a lackluster retread of Goodfellas in that it smacks of been-there-done-that. Fuck that though - people who say that shit are really just attempting to hide the fact that they're sick and tired of those goddamn grease-ball Italians.

>Back to the Future trilogy, the Matrix trilogy, the Saw
>series, the Jaws sequels, the Indiana Jones series, and the

Now you're just lying and make shit up.

Not to mention that this is an automatic L because
those movies are TRILOGIES

The ones I described are INDIVIDUAL MOVIES and
the fact that you keep conflating them further
proves my point:

You lumping them takes away from their specific
nuances and individuality...which is part of what
is racist. The three films had completely different
stories, themes, morals. Other than being Chinese
and featuring some martial arts, they were almost
nothing alike.

>Oh, and the FIRST in pretty much each of those
>cases is considered a CLASSIC (except for Saw.)

LMAO!

*ahem*

Empire (the second) is universally considered the best
in the Star Wars trilogy

Raiders and Temple of Doom are considered the best
in Indy (Temple to most people, which is part 2)

The first Back 2 the Future was considered the best

Jaws is obvious because the Jaws 2 was only made
cuz part 1 made bread, wasn't really a true sequel

So you're mish-mashing the examples and ruining your
dumbass point even further

>In each and every single one of those cases, the THIRD is
>considered the WORST, or in the case of Indiana Jones, the
>FOURTH is considered the worst, or in the case of SAW, they
>get considered shittier and shittier as they go. It's almost
>universally accepted when dealing in sequels and franchises
>that the FIRST is usually the BEST and interest generally
>declines over time.

I already disproved that one.

And the films I discussed weren't even a trilogy,
so auto L for you

White people lumped them together as a trilogy because
they don't care for the nuances of Chinese films and
culture

This is too easy for me.

>Many people call Casino a lackluster retread of Goodfellas in
>that it smacks of been-there-done-that. Fuck that though -
>people who say that shit are really just attempting to hide
>the fact that they're sick and tired of those goddamn
>grease-ball Italians.

That's because Casino wasn't that great.

Note that white people didn't criticize 'The Sopranos'.
White people loved it because, for the most part, it was
good. Nobody was tired of that shit.

Please note that most white people consider Fellowship of the Ring (1st movie) the best of the three. Everyone knows Return of the King (last one) only won Best Picture as a nod to the craftsmanship of the whole trilogy. Personally I like The Two Towers (2nd movie) the most. And I do know some white people who despise LOTR.

I think something lost in this whole "debate" is the simple fact that people don't wanna read while watching movies. Sad but true.

for what it's worth, on that same compiled list,
>Lord of the Rings:ROTK ranks 28th, Lord of the Rings:FOTR
>ranks 33rd, and LOTR:Two Towers ranks 57th.

does this account for lists that rank all of them as one movie? since they've come out i think more people have done that than ranked/reviewed them individually, which makes it kinda awkward when compiling lists. for instance: http://www.metacritic.com/feature/film-critics-pick-the-best-movies-of-the-decade

that's a small sample size. i'm not gonna nitpick everything on there, and there are plenty of foreign films, but i was still surprised that crouching wasn't on there and that city of god didn't crack the top 25.

You're just now watching these three movies? Where ya been? Crouching Tiger is definitely one of the best movies of the 2000s.

>How INFREQUENTLY they are mentioned and discussed is mostly

Is this directed at all Americans or just the white ones?

I googled "Samurai Flower" but couldn't find that movie? Are you sure you spelled the director's name right?

And just who do you think saw Crouching Tiger in theaters when it came out? Who helped it gross $128 million?

>b) Those movies had better special effects/more meaning/depth
>than any pure hollywood big budget movie of the last 10 years.

>Chinese know how to do big budget and meaningful. We don't.

'We' as in Americans or just 'we' as white Americans?

>I mean, 'Hero' was so well made it made you sympathize with
>its (not so)hidden pro-Mao fascist message, for god's sakes.
>Its a fantastic fucking film. Masterpiece.

I sympathized with the characters not the message...if I recall correctly, honestly it's been a while. I liked the movie a lot but mainly for the cinematography, special effects, and martial arts. If you wanna talk pro-Mao fascism I suggest you befriend some of those artsy fartsy types you despise.

>And I just saw MI:4 and visually its a snoozer compared to
>'Hero'. Probably the most beautiful film I've ever seen in a
>theater.

Why the fuck are you going to see MI:4? You're not too good for that trite Hollywood bullshit? Honestly you seem smart and should have known what to expect from a Mission Impossible movie.

>White people: You cannot direct as well as the Chinese. First
>it was math. Now its film. Get over it.

To be fair China does have a larger talent pool to draw from.

>Oh, and the the remake of 'Karate Kid' was a Chinese

>as well. Better than the American original <--it was, just
>stop,
>we already had this debate.

And Kung Fu Hustle is better than both. But you already knew that.

Have you actually seen any other Chinese movies besides these three? House of Flying Daggers is the newest of the three and it's 8 years old. Can you recommend any next level Chinese shit that's recent?

LOVED Hero.
really liked Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
thought Daggers was nowhere near on the same level as the previous two.

as a result, i've only seen Daggers once, CTHD thrice, and Hero about 20 times. Hero's a damn near masterpiece to me. Asian cinema in GENERAL has been kickin ass for a minute.

Quit being ignorant and acting like CTHD isn't on just about everyone's top of 2000s list. Often times in the top 10.

Quit acting like movie opinions aren't subjective. One or two people in this thread have said Hero sucks. Big deal. No reason to get mad. Most everyone else agrees it is a great movie.

And yes I'm on that Howard Beale.

But curse of the golden flower is maaad slept on by so-called fans/foreign film buffs and blows probably both of the lesser 2 films away
just due to the sheer grandiose chinese scale (whoever's seen it wld know what i mean)

Yea so any fans of the other 3 flicks, check that one out and then reorder your list

it lost to gladitor, dogg. i remember seeing gladitor and thinking "great popcorn flick"...when it got all those noms, i was incensed because i knew it was gonna win big.

American institutions always start from a place of cultural
self-importance. Hollywood and the American public in general
can never accept that people with funny accents, strange
cultural practices, spicy foods and tans without tanning beds
could ever do something better.

...the only answer is "you mad?". There's no actual discourse
or debate. It's really bothersome to me considering this guy
was one of the coolest dudes to have actual conversation and
discussion about serious topics. I remember back in the day,
when I first started posting on OKP (like 10 years back or
something) and we used to talk about shit in activist, there
was never any of this "you mad?" shit when cats didn't agree.
We could disagree and I'd walk away thinking "that's an intelligent
cat". Now it's this dumbed down "why art thou mad?" retort that is so
popular on the internet that it leaves no room for actual
growth and exchange in ideas. It's sad, really.

You sound mad.

And to be completely honest -- I tried having an "intelligent"
conversation, but people didn't want to. I have the level of
conversation that everyone else brings. If people are flippant,
I'm flippant.

If cats want to build, I build.

Its that simple.

Nobody wants to build and people tend to be dumb and mad.

So I see it and ask them a basic question:

"Why you mad?"

I can be ignorant and smart at the same time.

I honestly ask people why they are mad because cats
really do get mad.

“Miramax, the distributor, apparently cut out 20 minutes from the movie because they found that part to be “too Asian and confusing” for western audiences. Then-Miramax honcho Harvey Weinstein made a deal with Quentin Tarantino that he’d release the film uncut if Tarantino would allow a “Quentin Tarantino Presents” tag at the beginning of the film. Tarantino agreed.”

So Tarantino saved the US release from being some butchered product.

Tarantino made it possible for you to make this post.

Mad much?

BWAHAHAHAHA

You DUMB FUCK -- RACIST ASS US studio execs thought it was
TOO ASIAN and TOO CONFUSING

My post isn't a QT-hate post, dumb fuck. Its a post aimed
at the white execs who were RACIST and wanted it dumbed
down before the release for being TOO CHINESE

Pure, unadulterated racism

And I'm glad you admit that you proved my point.

I'd be mad if I was you too.

You didn't bother touching the argument with a
32.5 foot pole.

when you present "evidence" that crosses paths with your other subjective agendas, it's especially funny.
