"The Hipster Assault on Nic Cage <------ my newest crusade"
Tue Apr-07-09 08:38 PM by Basaglia

I SEE IT!!!

they talkin that shit about my dogg, like he ain't one of the best actors of his generation. just because he collecting them checks and lovin' elvis, that don't take away his oscar and his impeccable comedic timing, something his peers like sean penn and viggo (who i ride for and love with much gayness) severely lack.

i seen the washington post attack...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/03/20/AR2009032004513.html

i see them hipsters at EW...

http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2009/03/nicolas-cage-ar.html

i seen that hate from the onion...

http://www.theonion.com/content/opinion/lets_go_see_the_new_nicolas

oh, there's more, but those are the biggies.

why are these animals hating on such a genius? anyone can appease the gay mafia and play gay for critical acclaim, but not many can be action stars and figure of them puzzles in dat natty trez...that's difficult!!! them puzzles hard and he figure it out, all the while conveying the emotional gravity of every scene.

whatever. all i know is you hip bitches bet not furthur that bullshit anti-cage agenda here, because them 'sags done peeped it.

They showed that shit two times in a row. I watched a little of both. Reminded me of a time when Nic Cage being in a movie was pretty much a guarantee that you were going to have a good time watching it. This might still hold true for all I know, but I don't think I've seen anything of his post-National Treasure, which my loyalty to Dr Jones will not allow me to appreciate.

Hence why I haven't seen a Nic Cage movie in like 4 years

Con Air came on tv and she left the room

I think she deletes Nic Cage movies off our Netflix queue while I'm asleep

It's not "hate", I think his face genuinely scares her.

People can be stupid. Nic Cage is definitely a good actor... he's got more variety than most leading men nowadays. How many actors could do these action joints and balance them with stuff like Adaptation, Matchstick Men, Bringing Out The Dead?

Glad to have you on board. Now there'll certainly be lots of people talking about it at bare minimum, lol.

Lord of War, Weather Man, Adaptation, ConAir, Face/Off. I am cool with Nic Cage, yeah he might miss on a few movies but no one bats 100 and if TNT is showing a Nic Cage movie before or after NBA I will leave it on to watch.

But now that you mention it, this is trend is a little bothersome. Mostly for the retroactive aspect to it... Is the hipster community/anti-Bags media trying to tell us Cage *never* made good movies? Last time I checked he had a fairly strong catalogue. Shit, I grant the man a lifetime pass for 'Tiny Elvis' alone.

Look at the articles in the OP:

"Cage is like an actor who might have been Marlon Brando and decided instead to go the route of Wesley Snipes."

"The answer, in part, is that Cage -- whose latest, "Knowing," opened Friday -- won an Oscar in 1996 for playing a suicidal alcoholic in "Leaving Las Vegas," a gritty, brutal, honest movie, wonderfully acted (by both Cage and Elisabeth Shue) and which confirmed what a lot of people had long believed: that Cage was the most interesting actor in American movies."

People loved him in quirky roles and then he wanted to become an action star and they hated it. They were calling him a sell-out for doing The Rock and Face/Off and those are great action films.

Bruce Willis can be in a bunch of stinkers because nobody ever thought he was the greatest actor in the world. But the critics/hipsters LOVED Nic Cage and he's basically turned his back on the quirky indie world for the most part so they bash him.

A similar thing is about to happen to David Gordon Green. People are already harping on him for following up Pineapple Express with another comedy.

Although Id say if he was doing action movies at that level, there wouldn't be as much hate.

He tried to to the transition, and he's failed miserably. Even in his 'bad' movies, he usually players interesting characters, but its kind of depressing watch him act in a string of movies that would have been direct to video if his name wasn't in it.

as for the hate for cage?

i don't know, maybe it's because of the amount of shitty movies cage has made and his shitty acting in said movies? maybe it is his supposed fall from grace mentioned above.

i don't know. i used to really like him, but for a while now it has seemed that nic's presence in a movie guarantees taht it will be a shitty movie.

But he basically said that instead of looking for crazy scripts, Hollywood likes to take fairly generic scripts and cast them with people that will bring all of the quirky interesting stuff with them to the role. Like Depp with Pirates. Anyway, I've only seen a few of Cage's 'paycheck' movies, but he seems like he's one of those dudes. He's in movies that aren't so good, but probably would have been worse, or at least less interesting, if he wasn't in them. Would Wicker Man even be a so-bad-it's-awesome cult classic without Cage?

Nick the Actor, who is very subtle, human, vulnerable and really funny. He puts in really good work and can compete with just about anyone out there.

Then there's Movie Star Nick. Apparently, this Nick is never convincing nor does he seem to be in on the joke. He tries to come off as tough and effortlessly cool but always seems so manufactured and self-conscious. Not to mention, the movies he's in are usually terrible.

I'm a huge fan of Nick the Actor but I fucking hate the other guy.

Besides, if anyone spends enough time in the spotlight, people are gonna make fun. Do you think Nick Cage gives a fuck? He's gettin paid ridiculous money and got to work with Coen Bros., Scorcese, Jonze and Kaufman, etc. and won an OSCAR! Does he really need a crusader? The man is successful beyond most people's wildest dreams.

I know. The first half hour or whatever when Cage was just running around all nuts squeezing asses and shooting cops was awesome.

Travolta was over the top for most of the time when it came time for him to be Castor.

is underrated.

That's one of the best pieces of film acting I've ever seen. I've seen so many actors playing "drunk" and all that, and playing "miserable" or "depressed" or "dark" or whatever else you want to call it, NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY I've ever seen got it like Nic Cage got it.

Watching that movie through the years, I've realized there's a few problems with it (story moves a little weird, the pseudo-documentary bits with Elizabeth Shue make no sense because they have no context whatsoever, and no matter what you think of Shue's performance, Cage still acts her right off the screen), but the Nic Cage performance is TIMELESS. I watch that like I watch A Streetcar Named Desire -- JUST to see the performance of him and Brando.

oh but besides that, I'll throw Fast Times at Ridgemont High in there, too, where a young Nic Coppola gets about 30 seconds of screen time or something. Don't sleep -- he be making them hits even BEFORE he was Nic Cage.

Generally speaking, I don't know how you can rated it any higher than "Oscar Winning performance"

In response to Reply # 72

It means that most people disagree with you.

I'm not exactly disagreeing with you, playa. I think Nicholas Cage was great in Leaving Las Vegas.

All I'm saying is, you'd have a stronger argument if you said that Nicholas Cage in HONEYMOON IN VEGAS was an underrated performance...

Forget it. I'm being picky. I guess it can be underrated if you say it is. The important thing is that we both agree that he was great in Leaving Las Vegas. On a board where Basaglia and Orbit_Established are screwing with people just to do it, it seems pretty dumb to argue an opinion that essentially I share.

Although as a side note, I was never able to look at that performance the same way after reading an interview with Gary Oldman. He was like 'I'm a recovering alcoholic. Leaving Las Vegas was bullshit. Nicholas Cage was all smooth and cool. When you're an alcoholic, you're not smooth, you don't get the girl, you're vomiting and bleeding out of your asshole.' I'm paraphrasing but he definitely ripped into the movie and used the 'bleeding out of your asshole' line. It was hilarious. I still love the movie and think Nicholas Cage was great, but yeah, if I was an alcoholic I'd probably give this movie two thumbs waay down.

It's my understanding that it's quite faithful to the book by John O'Brien, who was a real suicidal alcoholic that killed himself while the film was in pre-production.

Maybe he heard Cage was being cast. Yowza!

But seriously. By the time someone is that far into being a drunk, it's how they operate. It's incredibly frightening.

I still have problems with the ending of that movie. Yeah, I get it. I know what Kauffman did and why. Still, it's less than satisfying for me.

I would qualify that as underrated. It quietly went from theater to DVD. I don't remember any critic praising it, but I don't recall it being panned either.

Jared Letto went a bit overboard, but overall I thought it was a good, smart flick.

Cage was pretty badass as mob boss' son Little Junior.

although the most bad-ass scene in that movie is Sam Jack telling David Caruso that if he fucks with him he will personally beat him to death.

he made almost immediately after getting the Oscar to 'action star' Nic Cage.

But I got the feeling he decided he'd mined all the quirky/supporting roles throughout the 80s/early 90s & then eventually was rewarded with an Oscar for a tortured lead role, so what next left to conquer but bringing his unorthodox brand to mainstream action films?

Him juiced-up and cut as Little Junior Brown (it was damn near shocking to see Cage like that for the first time) I think gave him the notion and studios a visual for how he might actually be able to pull it off, plus have the 'Oscar Winner' tag preceeding his name.

The movie is/was probably better known as the role Caruso basically quit NYPD Blue to roll the dice on but the Cage effect cannot be overstated to me.

because it falls into that same "great directors' third-tier films" category as stuff like 'the man who wasn't there', 'barry lyndon', etc etc. when the fact is those films are actually >>> a lot of lesser filmmakers' top-tier stuff.

an obvious riff on the 'taxi driver' theme but still some good stuff there.

The kids call his overweight daughter "camel toe" and she decides to smoke cigarettes, and take up archery...why? who knows?

i dont know what it is about that movie, but i watch it everytime it comes on demand or hbo.

That's gotta be my favorite Christmas-season movie. They usually play that on TV around Thanksgiving and it just sets the tone for the holidays. Love that movie.

Nic Cage is my boy but he is definitely hit and miss lately. Still have mostly fond memories so I'm not gonna hate.

Cause I've been trashing every piece of shit film he's put out for years now. Now, I'm not gonna claim he lacks acting skills, because he doesn't. My problem with him is that he often chooses not to use them and ends up with movies that are about as watchable as a home movie of your own birth.

He's honestly the only actor that, if I see his name attached to a film, I assume the film to be shit. If, and only if, it gets glowing praise, then I'll consider watching it.

I still hope that this new Werner Herzog film he did The Bad Lieutenant remake is decent. Not that I like remakes or remakes specifically remakes with Nic Cage in them but I figure Herzog might be able to bring back some of the darker places Cage went in some of his earlier roles. But besides that unless the Coen Brothers or Spike Jonze do another film with him I can't see too much good coming out of his career.

I didn't like that one with Jessica Biel where he could see the future though. Started out pretty good and then just squandered it. I give all his films a shot. I don't enjoy the National Treasures, but I enjoy him in those movies. He seems to have a rough idea of what he's getting into with each role he takes. I'm looking forward to Bad Lieutenant.

It was chock-full of "What the fuck?" moments, but so was that forthcoming movie we're not permitted to speak about. Some plot holes and so-so effects, but I still enjoyed it.

Cage was basically just doing a quirky Elvis imitation for most of the movie. Eva Mendes looked good. Sam Elliott is great in everything he does. It was enough for me. It's when a movie is bad and takes itself too seriously that it bothers me.

Dude signed on for a remake of a classic horror film written and directed by one of the greatest writers of theatre today (Neil LaBute)... can't fault him for that on paper. AND even if he knew it sucked while doing it, he gave it 110% in his performance... he didn't do it with a wink and a nod, or he didn't half-ass it. That was a full-out, I'm-gonna-give-this-role-my-everything performance. It just ended up being funny because the story and the dialogue were so absurd.

LaBute said that Cage "'would stop right during a scene' to demand rewrites based on how he felt 'a real cop' would behave. This necessitated rewrites up to the last day of shooting."

Dude can obviously act.

I'm just not really a fan of most action movies, no matter if the star is Nic Cage or Arnold or Van Damme...therefore I'm not drawn to like 2/3 of his movies from the last 15 years.

Not taking anything away from the dude, I'd just prefer more 'Matchstick Men' and less 'National Treasure'.

from his "great movies" essay on "adaptation":

And Cage. There are often lists of the great living male movie stars: De Niro, Nicholson and Pacino, usually. How often do you see the name of Nicolas Cage? He should always be up there. He's daring and fearless in his choice of roles, and unafraid to crawl out on a limb, saw it off and remain suspended in air. No one else can project inner trembling so effectively. Recall the opening scenes in "Leaving Las Vegas." See him in Scorsese's "Bringing Out the Dead." Think of the title character in "The Weather Man." Watch him melting down in "Adaptation." And then remember that he can also do a parachuting Elvis impersonator ("Honeymoon in Vegas"), a wild rock 'n' roller ("Wild at Heart"), a lovesick one-handed baker ("Moonstruck"), a straight-arrow Secret Service agent ("Guarding Tess") and on and on.

He always seems so earnest. However improbable his character, he never winks at the audience. He is committed to the character with every atom and plays him as if he were him. His success in making Charlie Kaufman a neurotic mess and Donald Kaufman a carefree success story, in the same movie, comes largely from this gift. There are slight cosmetic differences between the two: Charlie usually needs a shave, Donald has a little more hair. But the real reason we can tell the twins apart, even when they're in the same trick shot, comes from within: Cage can tell them apart. He is always Charlie when he plays Charlie, always Donald when he plays Donald. Look and see.

Cage put together one of the best roles in 2009 with Bad Lieutenant: POC: NO. It was intense and captivating even when you could tell Herzog had grown tired of playing around with the idea of subverting the Hollywood sequel. Of course Werner was cool enough to point out how much Cage helped craft that role with little things like when he popped out behind that door with the electric shaver. Classic.

And that 110% workman attitude you can't say about any of the other big actors. Folks will bend themselves out of shape to forgive DeNiro just showing up for the check in something like 'Everybody's Fine' ("He's doing it so he can fund the Tribeca Festival", etc) and not even trying. Isn't the guy's job to ACT? Cage could be that way, riding his fame for basically filming a personal appearance at a super sweet sixteen, but he doesn't: he's gonna sweat for his dollars.
