"Official WANTED Post"
Fri Jun-27-08 07:19 AM by Frank Longo

great action movie.
i was a big fan of the comic, mainly because some of the storyline was great. like the fraternity being supervillains, his dad being involved etc.

they simply took all of that out
made it into a script that's pretty empty compared to the original story but made it into one hell of an action film with crazy effects

ofcourse the effects/action scenes carry this film but thats not at all a bad thing imo.

I was a little disappointed, the story didn't seem too original, I didn't give a fuck about the characters, and everything about it was just okay. I didn't hate it, but it didn't thrill me either.

Well there was still a Dad story in the movie but is it different? I didn't mind the twist since it took place during the best action set piece that wasn't in a trailer.

>ofcourse the effects/action scenes carry this film but thats

Naw but its really the only thing the movie has goin for it as well. Some the dialogue was unintentionally hilarious so I guess it had that goin for it as well. This is the 1st flick I've seen McAvoy in besides that faun he played in Narnia. I guess he does the best he can with the lines he's working with but I wasn't all that impressed.

I liked the little winks to The Godfather & The Matrix as well as the exit from the accounting job. Common's three lines & 1 facial expression could've been spliced from Smokin Aces & I wouldn't have even noticed. Morgan Freeman has the best line of the movie. Jolie doesn't do it for me. The dude with the knives was cool tho.

When McAvoy shoots that medic-type guy, everyone else shows up and someone says, "What is he doing here?" They have a guy show up somewhere where he has absolutely no reason to be and they go with the old "Oh, we'll just throw in a line of dialogue pointing out how he shouldn't have been there and it will be alright."

I'm good with suspension of disbelief (I loved Live Free and Die Hard and that has some ridiculous moments) but this film was the cliched story with absolutely nothing new and the characters sucked. I almost fell asleep because it was a bunch of action scenes, most of which didn't have any real tension IMO.

the movie was really good.... even though curving the bullet/trajectory or whatever is a little farfetched.... it ended up being a very cool movie... a great story that included all of the aspects of a great underdog uplifting story.... 5/5 in my opinion

But McAvoy just irritated the shit out of me. He looked like a little boy living out a fantasy about what it's like to be a badass. And the dialog reflected that.

"...You the man, I'm the man..." etc.

I never bought that he made the transformation from pussified man to bad ass (let's say Norton in fight Club). For me, he went from puss to kid throwing a temper tantrum.

Substitute him and work on the dialog and I would've liked it.

I mean I went into it knowing that I should expect a mindless action packed special effects extravaganza...

but there was like one moment when the action seemed good - and the effects did nothing for me.

most of the visual effects actually looked cheesy and poorly done imo.

It looks like most of the special effects budget went to that train wreck scene on the bridge. Everything else besides the guy flyin out the window at the begining was on some Fantastic Four level.

the shootout at the end was utterly ridiculous. As was the shit with the Rats...

It was cool to see my hometown getting riddled with bullets, but in terms of acting and plot, it all got lost in the gunplay and special effects.

It was kinda Matrix-y, so if that's your bag, you'll dig it.

I enjoyed it for what it was, a "big Dumb Action movie".

C'mon..ease up people.

I mean, the shit could have REALLY REALLY been awful. But it turned out to be a very good, adrenaline pumping summer action movie with lots of gun clappin, special effects, and some funny moments. Yeah, you had to suspend disbelief and roll with some stuff, but shit, this ain't Atonement, it's based on a fucking comic book.

Looks like its at 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, which for a movie of this nature, ain't half bad.

Oh yeah...ain't NO ONE fucking with Angelina Jolie on that cool, femme fatale shit.

I mean, the central aspect of the Fraternity -- that they get their assassination orders from fucking WEAVED CLOTH... that ONLY Morgan Freeman can read, natch -- was really retarded and made Angelina and Com and everyone else in the crew look like the biggest bunch of unquestioning idiots this side of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

I mean, even a 10-year old could see the "twist" coming, especially after those lame-ass cloth rules were established

I don't give a shit if that was lifted word-for-word from the comic, it's still lame

And the film's portrayal of "real world" women (yeah, "except for Angelina") was troublesome... you had the fat, shrill office boss, and the hot, shrill girlfriend... wonderful...

And yeah, I also know, "but it's a movie for dudes, turn your brain off and stop looking for Oscars," blah blah blah

Cool. But dudes should be also able to enjoy competently shot and edited action sequences, a couple of which -- the ones where shots were held longer than 2 seconds -- were enjoyable

And dudes should also be able to root for a hero who isn't a whiny bidge for most of the movie's running time... at least Anakin and Luke Skywalker had an excuse, they were kids... it was hard for me to like this guy from jump...

I mean, yeah, you work a shit job... who the fuck doesn't? And quite frankly, it was kinda easy to see why your (unbelievably hot) girlfriend would be banging your "best friend," because, in the words of Rick Ross and a few other rappers, you're a lame... if, in the beginning, we had seen just ONE instance of this dude standing up for himself, and failing, then it would have been easier for me to get on board and celebrate when this guy is presented the opportunity for a better life... but no, he was a lame from minute one of the film and didn't really transform into something else until the plot demanded it, which was about a hour and 20 minutes in...

The movie does get points for a couple of instances of Morgan Freeman profanity, but in the end, I have to say

NOPE!!! Dem 'chowskis better

He wasn't whining as much as he was intrapersonally struggling with trying to break out and do fucking ANYTHING with his miserable life. But breaking out of his misery would have compromised his average "still making it" lifestyle. When he met up with Jolie and got the 3mil it was the wide open door for him to finally break out and be something without compromising his way of life.

I saw his complaints with his life as a pent up passive aggressive rage that he unleashed and didn't hold back once he went to the Fraternity.

******(SPOILER)*****

I had a gripe with how quickly he was a professional hitman that could obliterate a society of assassins in what seemed like a couple of weeks. The sense of time was wack, I don't see how he could gut the whole organization.

McAvoy's character was miserable, broke, and his girlfriend was banging his co-worker. I'm not sure how anyone could see that as "still making it".

And maybe it's me but, when it's coming from someone who can't even break up with the nagging girlfriend who is fucking his fake ass friend, "intrapersonally struggling with trying to break out and do fucking ANYTHING with his miserable life" is just whining.

> When
>he met up with Jolie and got the 3mil it was the wide open

I'm confused. How does joining a frat of assassins, turning your back on your life, getting beaten until you change, and becoming someone completely different translate to "be something without compromising his way of life." And what way of life is he trying not to compromise? Nevermind the fact that he ignored the wide open door when it was first presented to him.

and I'll take the L on him being with the chick fucking his friend, not sure how one lets that slide.

I'm saying he was so content with his pathetic life and depressed that it held him back from doing anything worthwhile. And when he joined the fraternity with an opportunity to learn more about his father he took out and then got heated when they kept whooping his ass and not giving him all the information he needed. I thought that part was rather obvious.

He was CLEARLY not content with his life. That is just not true. You're really reaching for this reading of the character.

What? The beatings broke him so he finally said he didn't know who he was. I think you completely misread what was going on there.

they could have easily created another device n its place that would have been a MUCH better facilitator to the story. i saw the double cross coming a mile away and i figured the guy he was after was his real father and the real "good" guy the second he said the bullet was traced to the birth place of the fraternity... an idea which was reinforced by sloan handing fox the paper with wes' name right after.

honestly, this was one movie that truly felt like it needed to span two films to really tell the story. a second film about him getting his revenge would have been dope and could have fleshed a lot of things out, like the whole loom of fate bullshit and establishing the history of the fraternity and perhaps discovering why it ultimately determined all the assassins should die. problem is the cloth thing was bullshit anyways.

but explaining those things and a conflicted fox unsure of which side to take, with both questioning her loyalty before ultimately making a necessary sacrifice in wes' favor would have made for an interesting sequel and made it a more complete story, and showing the evolution of wes into a certifiable badass would have been dope.

pretty good popcorn flick though, it seemed to have elements of fight club, the transporter, and some bourne shit mixed into its own premise and overall it made for an enjoyable mix.

hard to get over that shit with the clothe though.

most of the hate im seeing here is because either it was different from the comic or because parts were unbelievable.

well, i didnt even know it was based on a comic until i read a review, so that doesnt bother me and you just go in with the expectation of an action movie and buckle up.

i thought it was highly enjoyable.

Seriously. This movie sucked and I usually grade summer movies lightly . "Wanted" is straight up unwashed, 1 week old ass. I give it (_|_)(_|_)(_|_)(_|_) .

The script, acting, and yes, even the action sequences, were just terrible in my opinion. Even seeing Angelina Jolie's naked ass couldn't save the movie for me. I laughed at parts because they we're so over the top. I wanted to walk out the theater but after spending 9.75 and 3.25 for some candy, I wanted to get my money's worth. . Oh yeah, stop with the fucking bullet time effects and slow motion. Shit is played out. I think I am more pissed now after flipping through the comic today and seeing that they left so much out.

Peace,

~C

They could have titled this movie "Killer" as a tester for the Wanted comic book. It's like they took all the juice/concentrate from the story of the graphic novel and watered it down so that it would appeal to American audiences. However, the content in the graphic novel could have been great if the world was imagined right. I hope in a few years they pen a script closer to the "Wanted" book and have the surreal/fantasy/sci-fi element that this movie was lacking.

On The Lookout 4:
some new music. WTF is going on this year?

>It turned out to be the best June opening ever for an R-rated movie, beating Knocked Up's $30.6M, and the 6th highest R-rated opening of all time (behind The Matrix Reloaded, The Passion Of The Christ, 300, Hannibal, and Sex And The City) as well as the 3rd biggest R-rated action film (behind The Matrix Reloaded's $91.7M, and 300's $70.9M). The whole theater had to stop for a second and check it was not Samuel L. up there. That shit was comedy yo, my homeboy I were laughin for a good 5 minutes after that line. But it was it overall a dope action flick. It was over the top, but at least I could enjoy it.

The one movie that always comes to mind that was over the top and too much was The Transporter 2. Barrow roll the bomb of the car? Get the fuck outta here.

First of all, because I disagree with the movie. I'm not rooting very hard for a guy that ONLY had to stand up to people to feel better about himself, but instead waits until he has to beat people and kill them to feel like a man. That's some really dangerous material right there.

Second, it just wasn't done well. The shit with his father was telegraphed way too early. Wesley didn't look like the dude that got killed, he looked like the supposed bad guy. DUH. When Wesley was going through his dad's files, we see the bullet that was used in the first scene. DUH. And finally, villains always have some shit to say, if the villain has no lines the whole movie, and the mentor is on some "don't question me", well GUESS WHAT THE TWIST IS GONNA BE? FOH.

Matrix bites ABOUND. They start off as cubicle folks, have a big office liberation scene, think they've found a great new life but it turns out to be crap, too...blah blah blah.

Plus our hero's a DUMBASS. "Yeah, I'm finally in control of my life now, but I'll just kill who you way this loom wants me to, and not read the shit for myself. Cool, I can dig it."

Fuck this movie.

Did you like Fight Club? I saw more corrollaries(sp) to that than the matrix.

It tricked me. But again I wasn't looking too hard at this movie. The fact he didn't look anything like his supposed dad I did see. In hindsight though, when they showed him his fathers room they weren't exactly lying either. He fit the clothes and there was a Crossbow on the wall.

And the ending monologue by the villian was very cliche yes. And yes, the "this will be the last time you enter this room" was very telling.

I was more geeking out about how much of the scenes I recognized. Like this morning, and every morning, I pass Wesley's house.

>Matrix bites ABOUND. They start off as cubicle folks, have a

again, I saw this more akin to fight club.

I'm just tired of this silly-ass assertion that if there are things that bothered you about a "popcorn flick," then that means that you were thinking too hard about it and/or expecting an Oscar-winning movie, as if all Oscar-winning films are logically flawless in the storytelling

(this lame defense last reared its ugly head with Cloverfield)

If there are story details that are preventing me from enjoying the movie, I'm going to point them out

They may or may not be logical, they may or may not have already been covered and I missed them, but I'm going to mention them nonetheless... if that makes me a "film snob," so be it...

dumb action movie is ok

this was a stupid action movie

our hero makes what, three life altering changes in viewpoint in the movie? never considers any of them, does it all in about 6 seconds.

he's an entirely unredeeming individual, the only reason I'm supposed to root for him is bc his life sucks and he has panic attacks? foh, walk an old lady across the street or something

the special effects aren't even interesting when EVERYTHING in the movie is CGI. I'd like at least a small drop of realism. as it is, it wasn't as impressive as the matrix, and if you're doing CGI, that's the bar. if you can't match it, don't bother.

for making this bullshit. I saw this right after seeing Wall-E . Wanted almost f'ed up my high (clarification: The high, as in feeling good after seeing a quality flick, not the induced by narcotic kind of high)coming out of Wall-E. I am grading Wanted as a summer popcorn flick, meaning I lowered my standards. Even with Morgan freeman cussing and Angelina's fine ass, this film is pure 100% uncut, doodoo.

I wasn't overanalyzing shit. I don't hate movies just to hate on movies. I thought "Wanted" was a bad movie, that's it. I don't nitpick summer movies because I know they are made to entertain as many people as possible. Most are not trying to be deep, just 120 minutes of pure entertainment , to cool off and forget about shit for a bit.

I just did not find "Wanted" entertaining at all nor did think it was a well made summer film. Now, I didn't diss people who enjoyed it. If you enjoyed it , then good for you and I am glad you didn't feel your money was wasted. I did, however,. Also, to come in here and call folks cunts and bitches who didn't like the flick and voiced their opinions, man you get the foh.

In response to Reply # 62

Because the film was basically Joe Campbell's Hero's Journey to a T. If anything, it was unabashedly formulaic, which was fine, except there were a couple moments that really made no sense except for the fact that they were what was supposed to happen per the formula (e.g. dude finding out he's being hunted by a world class assassin and then deciding, fuck it, I'm just going to work tomorrow like none of this happened)

yes things could've been better (like his accent for one--prefer his natural speaking voice) but what movie cant be better?

it was a good action flick, end of story.

looking forward to death race and hellboy next....and batman

When I saw this movie I was like, "WTF"...really no relation to the comic book AT all.

I've got a feeling that Hellboy will pick up where Iron Man left off for good comic book movies.

The Punisher trailer looked semi-decent, but until they have Garth Ennis scripting, and a big ass imposing Danzig (but taller and short hair)looking white dude I just can't really dig it.

because it deviated so much from the comic. It turned an intriguing and interesting storyline into a crapfest of special effects. At first I thought they couldn't do the comicbook because the supervillain thing wouldn't sell. But looking back on it, special effects drove this movie and would drive a supervillain version even more. Personally I think they scrapped the original premise because it would have been much more expensive to make that this garbage.

So to summarize this thread, if you're a nerd you won't like the movie. The same people hating on this are the same people that were talking about how 300 wasn't historically accurate.

After the first scene, you knew it was going to be a b-actioner like Crank. But then the training started and shit was just boring.

It kept shooting for The Matrix when I think I would've liked it more if it was more like The Transporter. I mean, it's a magic loom, for fuck's sake.

I just wanted it to be fun. And it wasn't, it was gloomy and unpleasant.

I wrote more about it on my blog... but man, it was a disappointment. The trailer looked dope.

And easily the best part of the flick was "Shoot this maddafucka!" The theater died laughing at that moment.

Why was Wesley screaming like an old man so much in the first act of the movie. It was funny twice but after that I was just wishing he'd shut up. And he was waaaaaayyyy beyond being a pathetic simp. Wesley was so pathetic, you'd have to wonder why he hadn't already killed himself.

I really liked all of the action and quite a bit of the comedic stuff so I forgave the plot, although it was all very obvious.

but i also had reduced expectations.

i wasn't expecting it to change my life or change the genre.

it had a few great set-peices that were truely original, and a few that were contrived, but i dug it overall.

it was a fun summer flick. fun in the quasi anti-conformist fight club way. i didnt find it gloomy, just darker than the usual summer comic book movie. they took their r and ran with it. i ewas surprised that it was only r for language and violence and there was no sex, just an ass shot from angelina

oh well, we love our violence

the twist was cool, the guns were fun and the logic was fast and loose.

solid b flick, will cop once it on dvd.

Holy shit, I expected the movie to be bad, but this bad?

The magic loom was mentioned a few times in this thread, but I think only one person mentioned the rats and peanut butter. The only way to destroy the evil empire's stronghold is to attach bombs to a bunch of rats?

This nigga backed up a garbage truck into the enemy camp on some "yoooo joe!" type of shit. I'm surprised that bitch didn't yell "go, go, go!" to them rats, on some General Hawk shit.

Of all the movies I saw released in 2008, this was definitely the worst.
