"forgotten comic books and characters"

After reading all these comic book posts, I couldn't help but peep the "old" comic book collection.

My immersion into this arena peaked around the time Image blew the f*ck up. Anyway, I realized I have some comics I never have heard of again. I suppose they were somewhat short-lived.

A bunch of Ultraverse Comics:
-Prime
-Hardcase
-Freex
-Mantra
-The Exiles

-Trencher
-Savage Dragon

I wonder how much these are worth.

Anyhoo, what about the rest of you?

A lot of the 90's bad girl stuff (i.e. lady death, the revival of vampirella)
Ash
The Darkness (at one point a well read book, but the damn thing is constantly like months behind a regular release schedule)

Anything Dark Horse comics ever put out

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life.

..."Jonah Hex".

One of my favorite comics when I was a kid. He pops up in random cameos every now and again, but hasn't had a title of his own in a good, long time.

A great character...part western, part sci-fi, with one of the first comic book characters I remember that was neither good nor bad, just out for himself. An ugly motherfucker too, which made him that much cooler.

in any case, i'm looking forward to it... Jonah Hex was the only Western comic i really LOVED back in the day. hell, i even loved it when he went to the future in HEX (now *that* was a slept-on series)

also, the three miniseries written by Southern horror novelist Joe R. Landsdale and drawn by Timothy Truman are worth checking out: Jonah Two-Gun Mojo, Riders of the Worm and Such, and Shadows West

was my shit! The first comic I started collecting. I think the whole atmoshere of that comic is unmatched still. I think it was the only DC comic that didn't have the approved seal on it's covers. Shame it was only 13 issues long. Slept on indeed...

will Hex remember the events of HEX once he returns to his own time

when he appeared in the JLU cartoon, he made reference to having been to the future, but i don't know if that carried over to the comic, too

Kirby did some crazy shit in the later days, psychedelic influenced titles like DEMON. Most of them went nowhere but they all look great. Along with Merc, Spitfire & the Troubleshooters, DP-7, Nightmask, Star Brand and Psi-Force (my favorite).

Remember, Pittsburgh blew up because of Star Brand (The Pitt) and the US blamed it on some rogue terrorist group.

People tend to shit on the whole New Universe concept but it produced some decent books. What was interesting was towards the end of the line they completely changed the origins and ideas of some of the books.

They just re-vamped the series not too long ago. I haven't had any interest in picking it up, so I can't speak on its quality or its faithfulness to the earlier series. But it's there.

I heard Dale Keown got hooked on that blow, so Pitt disappeared. Damn shame, because Pitt was one of the coolest looking superheroes ever, alien-Hulk wanna-be or not.

I really dug Keown, although when he left Hulk to do Pitt I was pretty disappointed. Keown sorta looked like a dope fiend, come to think of it. So he's not doing any comic work these days?

Though #43 seems to suggest otherwise. I just know I heard from afew people that Keown had a nasty coke habit, which was why it kept taking so long for issues of Pitt to come out, and why when they did they were so short. Wizard once joked about him becoming a total recluse.

I really loved his run in Hulk. I haven't seen much with him these days, but I'm not nearly as plugged into comics as I once was.

Nah, Keown has got some sort of rock band. That's his main passion, so he only does comic work occasionally at the moment. Damn shame, too. For a mofo that hasn't been working, he keeps improving his style. Check out Incredible Hulk: The End for some next level shit.

If anyone happens to have seen it in their local score I'd gladly pay a finders fee for it. I read the Hulk for years (blah blah blah) and I can say Keown with Mark Farmer on inks was the best regular art team that book has ever seen. I dunno about the alleged coke habit but I know he's doing work for Top Cow's Darkness book.

Atari Force
http://home.hiwaay.net/~lkseitz/comics/AtariForce/

like Marvel's GI JOE and Transformers, this started out as a simple product placement book, but developed into one of the best sci-fi comics of the 1980s, even though it's oddly forgotten today

E-Man
http://alectronn.homestead.com/Eman.html
http://www.toonopedia.com/eman.htm

one of the earliest self-parodic superhero titles that paved the way for the likes of Giffen, DeMatteis & Maguire's Justice League and now The Defenders (especially when it moved to First Comics in the 1980s). i'm looking for back issues of this shit everywhere... the first comic i ever bought with my own money was E-Man#1 now that i think about it

Blue Devil
http://www.toonopedia.com/bluedevl.htm

truly the most hilarious comic book of the 1980s... god, how i miss it

Omega Men
http://www.mykey3000.com/cosmicteams/omegamen/

ROM the Spaceknight
http://home.hiwaay.net/~lkseitz/comics/Rom/

another title that started out as a medium for selling toys but eventually developed into into its own compelling saga

Brian Michael Bendis'"Powers"
IDW horror comics "Wake the Dead" being the current favorite
"Ex Machina"
"Strange Girl"
"The Walking Dead" (loving the zombie revival)

All of the Marvel "house Of M" related stuff (I have no choice as the man of the house is a huge X Men fan)

I used to like "NYX" before it got so behind on release schedule that you couldn't even remember what happened last ish.

The "Bite Club" miniseries was cool, as was the "Madrox " mini.

"daredevil"

and every X men title known to man ends up in my house someplace

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life.

yep... i only read the trades, though (the pacing is too slow for me to follow from issue to issue). i've been waiting for the next collection, though the last one let me down a little

>IDW horror comics "Wake the Dead" being the current favorite

i finally read "30 Days of Night" and i was a bit disappointed

>"Ex Machina"

a book i have been meaning to get up on

>"Strange Girl"

i always want to pick this up but i never do...

>"The Walking Dead" (loving the zombie revival)

another title i need to start reading

>All of the Marvel "house Of M" related stuff (I have no choice
>as the man of the house is a huge X Men fan)

bleh. LOL

>I used to like "NYX" before it got so behind on release
>schedule that you couldn't even remember what happened last
>ish.

WOW! another NYX reader! i thought i was the only one! i picked it up just because of the Josh Middleton art, but the story really drew me in

>The "Bite Club" miniseries was cool.

yep... there's supposed to be a sequel coming up too...

he was one of those great 1960s Charlton characters that DC eventually bought the rights to in the late 1980s. so far, i don't think they've done with him, though.

i loved all those funky old Charlton comics, though

http://www.angelfire.com/comics/nolancole2003/Pages/Goldenage.html

of course, most of you probably know that it was Alan Moore's intention to cast Watchmen using the original Charlton characters, but Dick Giordano didn't want to render them unusable after Watchmen, so instead he told Moore to create new characters who were similar to the originals. therefore:

The Question became Rorschach
Blue Beetle became Nite Owl
Nightshade became Silk Shadow
Peacemaker became The Comedian
Captain Atom became Dr. Manhatten

etc.

the Bug was one of the few good things in the whole series... he definitely needs to get his own title again, but i don't think DC is that fond of him, for some reason

That was by Peter David, right? And wasn't it that he didn't want to release it through Marvel or anything because he didn't want to give up the rights to the characters? I can barely remember now.

In response to Reply # 36

i'm certain Perez drew it (for some reason i thought he wrote it too)

but it's possible that Peter David wrote it too because i remember hearing some relatively recent news about the characters making a guest appearance in David's "Fallen Angel" at DC

in any case, i *believe* the book came out... because i remember picking up an issue, flipping through it and being somewhat disappointed that there wasn't that much "Sachs" in it, if you know what i mean...

In response to Reply # 39

I know I bought the damn series but the only thing I remember about it was boobies on display arround issue 3. I figured PAD and Geroge Perez was a can't lose combo but that series was really forgetable. Now David and Perez' Hulk: Future Imperfect still stands as one of my favorite and best Hulk stories ever.

The group with Black Bolt as the leader. Not sure if Marvel brought them back or not since I don't collect comics any more. I have issues 1-10 and then a few after that. They stopped the series in the late 70s.

JM DeMatteis (who had a classic run on Defenders in the 1980s) is writing it again, but this time he's working with Keith Giffen and Kevin Maguire (who he collaborated with on the old Justice League/Justice League America book)

so yeah... they've gone ahead and made it a humorous superhero book. it's pretty good.

Yeah, I'm thinking about the Defenders. The group with Dr Strange. I'm really surprised they brought that group back. It was never a really popular book back in the day. Who's the line up in the new series?

Captain Carrot & His Amazing Zoo Crew (remember when they teamed up with the JLA- Just'A Lotta Animals?)

Power Pack (shouldn't they all be young adults by now?)

Challengers of the Unknown (I wasn't too familiar with the originals but I enjoyed the update that DC did about 5-6 years ago)

The Fallen Angels (Sunspot is another favorite)

Remember that god-awful Teen Titans they tried to run by us with the Atom as a member? I was pissed because they killed off Joto and Generation X killed off Synch. Why does the overachieving black teenager always have to be the first to go?

WildCATS (probably the best Image book that I can think of)

Marvel Team-Up (I always had a thing for this book)

Whatever happened to Starfox?

Where's Wonder Man? Last I remember, he & Scarlet Witch had a thing going on.

Banshee never got the respect that he deserved. He & Dazzler would have been a tough duo.

Triathalon...remember the storyline about people being mad because the Avengers didn't have any members of color? Did he get kicked off the team or something?

Peace,

yep... wanted to name this one. they need to come back post haste!

> Power Pack (shouldn't they all be young adults by now?)

isn't there a new Power Pack book out now? don't know if it's the same characters, but it seems to be part of Marvel's line aimed at younger readers (ie it's looks manga-ish)

> Challengers of the Unknown (I wasn't too familiar with the

man... i just got the trade paperback of that! i never read the whole thing when it came out (it was actually 13 years ago, if we're thinking of the same series)

Howard Chaykin just completed a new Challengers mini, though with completely unrelated characters

> The Fallen Angels (Sunspot is another favorite)

can't say i remember this, though...

f'real? when was this? THE ATOM? like, Ray Palmer was in Teen Titans?

oh wait... come to think of it, i might have heard something about this recently... like it was Nightwing, Starfire, Cyborg et al with a few new members, right?

> WildCATS (probably the best Image book that I can think of)

i used to love this book, too... it's still around (in a form), but you know what's been forgotten? MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE!

i was just thinking about that the other day, too... surprised Bendis hasn't used him yet, because he seems right up his alley

It was a team with a lot of the New Mutants/X-Force members. Plus some of the young Morlocks like Skids and some dude who shot fire out of his hands. Plus Devil Dinosaur and Moonboy. And some kid who controlled two pet lobsters or something. One of their many comics aimed at younger teens.

Martvel Two-In-One had people teaming up with the Thing, right? Before my time. But I always remember that the second annual featured the first time Thanos got "killed" (turned into stone).

Yeah, the Vanisher had a group of kids stealing for him. Sunspot had left the New Mutants for a while and Warlock went with him to look out for him. Siryn ended up in the book. Moon Boy & Devil Dinosaur were members but I forgot how they brought them in. there was also a telekinetic kid who had 2 superhumanly strong lobster (superlobstery?) as pets. I kid you not.

No, it was a little bit before that. It had 4 new characters (Risk, Prism, Joto & Argent) teaming up to become the next generation of Teen Titans. Since Atom had been de-aged in Zero Hour, he was a teen but with years of experience so he joined up. Honestly, I followed the book for a while but it never took off for me.

Staring Vance Astro (who changed his name to Justice eventually, hence my earlier wuestion) and a bunch of aliens. Including Charlie-27 (a tall but squatly-built super-strong guy), MArtinex (a crystal-based humanoid), Yondu (a blue-skinned, red-finned archer), Nikki (a young hot chick with flames for hair) and Starhawk (the all-knowing wise man of the team, who also shared his body with a woman, I believe. Her name espcapes me).

Though I being glib, the stories were actually pretty good. They did features features versions of characters like Ghost-Rider and such. Dr. Doom was still around (he transplanted his brain into Wolverine adamantium skeleton), Wonder Man was still alive (now calling himself Hollywood) and Dr. Dtrange had become the Ancient One (he ended up geting killed).

He even received the name Justice first in Guardians of the Galaxy. It happens when he finally figured out how survive outside his special suit (don't ask) and found Captain America's shield.

Later in the series, the Guardians added the "present" Earth's Yellowjacket to the squad. Ya know, the fairly hot chick supervillain. Don't know how long that lasted.

You are truly taking it back...Valkyrie was tough. Remember Cloud had that man/woman thing going on?

I had the final issue of Defenders when Valkyrie, Gargoyle, Manslaughter and Andromeda (was that her name? Atlantean chick) got turned into dust. Iceman & Angel were on their way to X-Factor at that moment.

Atlantis Wars not so much.

After those two, I think they realized linking all the annuals was a logistically nightmare, plus there started being waaay to many series to link them. So for the next few years the start linking annuals in groups of four. Some made sense (the X series, the Spider-Man series), some not so much (one story want from Punisher, to Daredevil, to Hulk, to Silver Surfer).

Though I'm not sure if it will ever happen, or who is really clamouring for it. I think I own one Moon Knight comic, which I think came in one of those comic book 3 packs, which I only held onto because I thought the Stephen Platt artwork was so kick ass.

As for Hank Pym... well I think he could potentially be fascinating in his own series, if it had the right team behind it.

I've kind of known who he was through researching some of the major teams, though I hadn't read any stories he's in.

Then. I'm reading the X-Men Essentials Vol. I and in one of the many potnetially reality-altering events, they get the Avengers on the video link.

Cut to an odd-looking Avenger wearing an antennae-simulating helmet, gasping, while his lady companion says "Just hold me, Hank!"

I immediately said "Goddamn, it's Ant-Man!" Ii really wanted to see him talk to some Ants, but oh well.

I used to love this book. Warlock, Gamorra, Moondragon, Pip the Troll, and Drax the Destroyer. The all held one of the Infinity Gems. When Starlin wrote this book, it was great. At one point, after I'd stopped buying comics as serious amd the series had ended, I went back on bought the back issues I could find, which was tough.

Does anyone happen to know how this story ended?

That 12-issue limited series is probably one of the best all-time stories that I can remember in all of my comic book days. Although they took out a whole bunch of my favorite characters, that series was far & away one of Marvel's best efforts.

Question...who was Tom Thumb's DC counterpart?

King of the Quantum bands, bee-otch!

On the real though, I always liked this title. It seemed like the writer used it as a book to bring old/obscure/forgotten characters. If I recall correctly, both Jack of Hearts and Moondragon were reintroduced to the Marvel Universe through this book. Hell, they even had two issues where he want to the New Universe, and ended up getting the Starbrand.

It was dope though. I always kind of dug Uatu, the Watcher, as a character.

I didn't discover this gem till a little later in the game. In fact I didn't start buying it regularly until around the time of that Liefeld pencilled "What if Wolverine were an agent of SHIELD?" issue (which yes, I bought for the MIND BLOWING art). So I don't think I really can claim this one until Vol. 2 or 3, whichever incarnation they were on during the late 80s/early 90s. But man, at one point I think it got to be my favorite title. I was buying up back issues and everything.

It's one of those titles that was so great because it was continuity free, yet at the same time you kinda needed a basic understanding of background Marvel continuity to appreciate what was going on. 'What if Spider Man kept the alien costume?' was a pretty good one. I think the symbiote hooks up with Hulk or Captain Universe at the end and wrecks shit on a cosmic level. Come to think of it I think every 'What If?' comic ended in catastrophe.

And how cool was Uatu the Watcher?

Yeah, this title is definitely NOT forgotten in my book.

That was a good one. From my recollections, it went from Spirder-Man to the Hulk to Thor. It was finally defeated by Black Bolt, who used his sonic scream to ocmpletely destroy it (level a whole mountain in the process).

Other dope issues included "What if the X-men lost the Inferno?", which was one the really good "most of Earth gets killed off" issues (I think of the super-heroes, only Phoenix II, Doctor Strange and Alicia Masters made it), which if Wolverine became lord of the Vampires?" (sound corny but it worked), and "What if Sue Richards second child was born?" (featured one depressing story and one uplifting one).

Okay, I definitely remember the Black Bolt thing. And now that I think of it, maybe it was Thor after all. Not sure why I'm confusing Captain Universe in there- did they ever do a "What if Spiderman kept his cosmic powers?"

>Other dope issues included "What if the X-men lost the

Had it, but hadn't read Inferno at that point. That's the thing about "What If?" You can sing its non-continuity praises all day long, but if you didn't have a firm grasp on the Marvel Universe, that shit would be over your head. For fanboys only.

>which if
>Wolverine became lord of the Vampires?" (sound corny but it

Yeah! I had those too!

I think the very first issue was "What if Spiderman was a member of the FF" which I bought as a back issue from my local shop at obscenely inflated $peculator pricing. A couple other issues you might recall:

What if Captain America became president?
What if Daredevil killed kingpin?
What if Spider-Man had married the Black Cat?

...and then there were a ton of What if __________ hadn't defeated ____________?

Ah, I couldn't get enough of the stuff.

Yeah, that was the first issue of the first run of the series. The ones I'm remember were when they relaunched the title. Obviously, ti was the exact same as the first time around.

>What if Captain America became president?

Is that the two-part one where it likes Cap becomes president, but then turns America into a facist state? And then it turns out it was really the Red Skull, pretending to be Steve Rogers, who got elected president? That one was tight.

>What if Daredevil killed kingpin?
That one was classic. Can't remember all the details, but I know Daredevil was heavily wracked with guilt and shit.

>What if Spider-Man had married the Black Cat?
Nah, can't recall that one.

>...and then there were a ton of What if __________ hadn't
>defeated ____________?
Too many of those to mention.

Some other good ones I remember:

What if Xavier become the Juggernaut?
What if Captain Mar-vel hadn't died?
What if Iron Man lost the Armor Wars?
What if the X-Men stayed in Asgard?
What if Dr. Doom became the Sorcerer Supreme?
What if the first Death's Head lived?

Now I gotta go to my folks house and start digging.

Because there *was* a "What if Spiderman kept his cosmic powers?" ish! See if you have it. As I recall, it was pretty cool (At least it was to my tiny 11 year old mind) #31. I had to look it up.

>Yeah, that was the first issue of the first run of the series.
>The ones I'm remember were when they relaunched the title.
>Obviously, ti was the exact same as the first time around.

Yeah. I dug the relaunch more just because I understood the scenarios a bit better.

>Is that the two-part one where it likes Cap becomes president,
>but then turns America into a facist state? And then it turns
>out it was really the Red Skull, pretending to be Steve
>Rogers, who got elected president? That one was tight.

Shit was bananas. There was some crazy twist at the end. Either he was the Red Skull, or some sort of android that self-destructed, or some wacky combination of the two. Which is kind of a cop out, and completely sidesteps the issue of Captain America being president (seeing as how it wasn't actually Cap) But a cool story nonetheless.

>>What if Spider-Man had married the Black Cat?
>Nah, can't recall that one.

It was a 2 parter. Part one was him not marrying MJ. Part two he and Black Cat get hitched.

>What if Iron Man lost the Armor Wars?

I was trying to remember the Iron Man one. I think this is it. Once again, I wasn't an avid Iron Man reader, so not knowing what the fuck the Armor Wars were, the full impact of this issue was sort of lost on me.

I haven't bought a comic in a long time so I probably wouldn't understand the premise anyway, but if I saw one that looked interesting I'd probably cop it just because it's "What If?"

Black Lightning was the Secretary of Education under President Lex Luthor. If I had typed the previous sentence 5 years ago, I would have been slapped. I'm not sure how Luthor got knocked out of office, though. Since then, I beleive he's shown up in the Green Arrow.

His daughter is also a member of the Outside and I believe she goes by the name of Thunder.

>taskmaster (that guy was fucking cool)

I bought it because Batman was featured prominently on the cover. This was aroung the time of the big Batman movie craze, and DC was clearly cashing in with the cameos. In fact, I think Batman's name was bigger than Manhunter's right there on the cover.

I bought it because I thought it was a Batman comic. Bastards.

Actually, it was a pretty tight issue. There was one particular 3 panel action sequence that I remember quite vividly to this day.

Demolion Man was a former sidekick of cap. And super-strong former pro-wrestler who was not very good at being a super-hero.

Battlestar was the former sidekick of US Agent, back when he was the right-wing Captain America. (hat in itself was a bizarre turn for Captain America). I know Battlestar hooked up with Silver Sable at one point. Haven't seen him in a while since.
