"WATER"

Peace

I was in the store last nite with a friend & couldnt help noticing all the people that were purchasing WATER... So in passing through the water aisle I checked out the selection that they had

Not going into name brands... cuz I'd be posting forever, but This is what they had to offer, my list might be a little slim, becuz the shelves were not full.. but here it goes.

purified water
distilled water
drinking water

In addition, you might be the type that never buys water in the store & just drinks......

plain 'ol tap water

What about the people that live out in the country & have well water?

Some things that come to mind are:

Is is possible to drink tap water & remain healthy?
Some believe so, some don't.. but the ones that don't are they just advocates for the bottled water industury?

Our bodies fight off bacteria every second.. So if the tap water has bacteria in it.. our bodies should be able to fight off anything that could cause us harm.

personally I drink a little of both... & buy bottled water in the store because it is more convienent to buy a small bottle of water when you are driving than to stop in a place & ask for water... BUT at a convienence store (who's goal is to convienently rip you off)...

Water is MORE EXPENSIVE than GAS..
Gas - average .99 - $1.29 for a gallon
Water average .99 - $1.29 for 20 ounces

The average cost of water per gallon that I saw last nite in the supermarket was .69 - $1.29 a gallon.

That is a rip-off! & we start wars over oil? What's going to happen when the water runs dry? (some places it already is due to the lack of rain that we have been having.. I have a cousin that lives in VA in the sticks... her well is on the verge of drying up.)

hygenically speaking... is bottled water much cleaner than tap water?.. or not?

Is this water thing just a scam?
Who's to say that I can't open a water company & just fill it up with tap water.. make millions?

If any of you have any information about which water is better for you... post here

& If this has been discussed before, someone please post a link.. I searched the archives & didnt see anything so I posted away...

Peace & Blessings

instead of buying bottles or jugs...get a five gallon container and refill it at your local health food store. you'll save a lot more money.

if you want to find the differences between the water itself...you can get it analyzed at your local water plant. call 'em. take some bottled water and test that out too.

bring myself to buy water

i mean- buy water? that's crazy.

put i did finally get a filter. and i'm a big fan of it.

i heard sumthin recently about a woman who's child died of contaminated drinking water related issues. now where did i hear that? cuz that sounds nuts.

i did find out, however, after i had my daughter, that the drinking water in my county is unsafe for pregnant women

of all the countries out there that u would expect to put sum research into keeping the water drinkable.....

There is a lot of it being done. But there is a braod gap between the so called academic researech engineers and the practioners. Besides it also depends upon the current administration. I dunno how many of you are aware but dumb fuck Bush Jr. put a hold on all of the CLinton env. regualtions passed right before slick Willy bounced from office. Specifically they put a hold on the new arsenic standard becasue many of the utilities were bitchin' about how much money it was going to cost. They finally decided it was a good idea, but that was months later.

A slightly different topic, but recently a top regulatory "watch dog" from the EPA quit becasue of the current admin. env. policies. He says crackhead Jr. was being soft on air polluters, grandfathering in too many plants that have made upgrades. He (the regulators) claims unbias, pointing out that he started his job under Daddy Bush. My poin? Admin. plays a large role in env. enforecment and the funding for research. I think Solarus made a post about the politics of research funding recently...

If I have to drink lots of it every day I may as well have variety, esp. carbonated (no sugar), infused with natural flavorings and electrolytes.

My top five water beverages:
Poland Springs Sparkling Water
Glaceau Wellness Water
Glaceau Fruit Water
Glaceau Smart Water
Ice water

Of the five, the ice water is the best but electrolytes and flavor give it punch. I buy and use Brita to ease my mind a little about bacteria from the tap and I chill the water as much as I can. When I fast I drink room-temperature spring water so as to not shock my system.

if it keeps me away from soda, i will drink it

anything that keeps me away from soda is a welcome blessing

i know it's not natural. it's also 89 cents (with a bottle that's *excellent* for reusing/everyday use (i use those bottles every day to transport my water/soymilk/smoothie/juice/whatever). 89 cents is a lot of cash for a bottle of water. so i only buy it when it's time for me to replace my old stank bottles.

a nigerian coworker once told me this story...

In class to show us that alcohol was bad for you, she displayed a tequila bottle with a dead worm at the bottom. She said that alcohol is so strong that it killed the worm and since the worm cannot live in alcohol, that it would be poisonous and bad for people too. Upon asking what the lesson learned from this was, one of the students replied: "Yes, we understand. Drinking beer will kill the worms in our belly."

YUCK! SOda is bad for you.. that shit gives you bumps on your face, makes your kidneys work extra hard, you mind as well as dump a bag of sugar in water & buck that down.

I believe that Soda is just as addictive as cigarettes, alcohol, or anything that is grossly marketed to that extent.

That's due to the pH. Your stomach's pH is also at 2, so that' snot a real concern. the concern shoudl be getting it down. When I used to drink soda, it burned wosre than liqour (going down that is)

coca cola will not clean your toilet. It won't eat corrosion off of battery terminals. It won't dissolve metal.

Think about those self serve soda spots with the metal tray. They see more soda in a day than you can drink in a year. That metal tray should be holier than utamaroho at a juice bar, but they ain't.

It's just not good for you, leave it at that.

for a while...then i had to let it go cuz it's not natural.

young cocnuts is where they extract the electrolytes from (hence the slight cocnut water taste)

young cocnut water is THE best source of electrolytes in the world! for real. me and a martial arts comrade moved both MY apartment last summer (in ATL heat) AND someone elses and only drank that. it is the perfect drink as far as i'm concerned. the nutrient content of that is what gatorade and all of those drinks are trying to mimic.

I buy and use

>a little about bacteria from
>the tap and I chill
>the water as much as
>I can.

BRITA is ONLY good for amending taste. It contains ac (activated carbon) and ion exchange resins. It will do absolutely NOTHING for bacteria. It helps to remove chlorine (but your aerator should do most of that) and other metals, if present, but NOTHING for bacteria. In fact bacteria can grow in it on the ac...

Water in the country IS pretty clean, there are some exceptions. Depending upon the source water and the region of the country you live in, the mineral content can very drastically. So one issue to eliminate from your mind is the issue of mineral content. Simply becasue of variablity.

Cleaner? Well we have to define cleaner? Does less chlorine make it cleaner? Maybe. How about the presence of trihalomethanes (THMs)? Certainly. I guess I dunno how to answer the question becasue we have to define what we are concerned about. The EPA regulates water essentially by whats in it. Currently, env. eng. do a pretty good job of removing "the bad" stuff, but if you could be more specific I might be able to help.

When I say cleaner I mean ridding of water of the elements that could make it detrimental to our health. So are you saying that since the government regulates the quality of water we drink we should technically be able to throw ourselves under the tap and guzzle to our heart's content? Is there other "bad stuff" that the EPA lets slide that we should be trying to filter out on our own or is filtering a virtually pointless effort?

To the level that would get you close to 0, filtering is pointless. Naw, I'm not trying to say that becasue the gov't regulates it's okay, but that does mean that 1)there are a set of explicit standards, 2) those criteria HAVE to be met on some schedule, and 3) you have a better means of holding your utility accountable. For all of those who don't know, look out if the gov't decides to deregulate water and let it go private. You think you'r bitchin' now about the price? If it goes private you MAY see equal or better quality, but the price. Oh how I don't want to see the day.

Its a waste of money to buy distilled water, when you can
build your own solar distiller and do it yourself. "buying"
distilled water is more of a conveniency than a neccesity.
It is probably worth the money to buy spring water, which
contains suplementary minerals which aid in health.

>What about the people that live
>out in the country &
>have well water?

Well water can be a tricky issue. if you recnelty recieve a well, then the material sued for piping is safe; however the source water (i.e. the aquifer) may not be. Here in the upstate SC there has been a lot of controversy recently becasue the residents of Simpsonville found Uranium in there drinking water. Needless to say it was fgound to be a natural source. If you have a well, have you local environmental regulatory agency test it REGULARLY. You yourself can buy some at home tests from hardware store, but sometimes the results are tricky to interpret.

>Is is possible to drink tap
>water & remain healthy?

Yes! Tap water is regulated whereas the bottled water industry is not. So for example, the bottle may be a permeable to semipermeable membrane. During transportation they may stoire those boxes near household cleanign chemicals If those chemicals are volatile at all, the bottled water could act as scrubbers and absorb some of those chemicals.

>Our bodies fight off bacteria every
>second.. So if the tap
>water has bacteria in it..
>our bodies should be able
>to fight off anything that
>could cause us harm.

Yes and No. Coliform is used as an indicator organism for water contamination, If there is any detected above a threshold value, the residents should and would be notified. However, some bacteria form cysts. *remember the whole anthrax scare* Those cysts can certainly resist chlorine, which is rendered ineffective, and remain dormant in the body. Things like Giardia and Chryptosporidium can cause seriuos problems with only a realtive samll number of cysts within the body.

>That is a rip-off!

Very True! I was glad Mos Def dropped it in a song. That way it could reach more of the general populus.

>hygenically speaking... is bottled water much
>cleaner than tap water?..

No not necessarily. Some companies just buy tap water and bottle it with a pretty picture of a spring on front. Word!

>Who's to say that I can't
>open a water company &
>just fill it up with
>tap water.. make millions?

Some do, See above.

Sounds like a good example of the variability in water. On the coast, the water is devoid, relatively speaking, of many of the minerals in a "rocky" terrain. Becasue the water passes the the rocks and other geological structures in the aquifer, it's easy for it to pick up minerals.

The smell might mean that it's an artesian well that's anaerobic. My grandmother had one.

Sulfur is usually the product of a fermentation within the aquifer. Normally there is very little organic matter in an aquifer, but fermentation can occur. One of it's biggest products is hydrogen sulfide. That's the stuff you SMELL. You smell it with rotten eggs, you smell it when you boy thinks it's funny to pass gas, you smell it in a wetland, etc. It not too pleasant, but I can't comment on the heatlh effects. I think it's harmless, but not sure.

I have been drinking bottled water for a while, here in L.A. both places I've lived have had really hard tap water...Even with Brita the taste is strange. I drink spring water. I rarely drink distilled water but remember not everyone might be buying it to drink--I use it to iron with and also to water my plants...

Back home I used to drink tap water all the time. It tasted fine--it actually had a pleasant little aftertaste.

The well-water thing, after reading a little bit about it and seeing Erin Brokovich, I'd be concerned...

But more importantly, in other countries, the "safety" of the water supply can come into play. I was in Asia last summer and there were places where we were warned repeatedly not to drink the water...even had to brush our teeth with bottled water. Now, of course a lot of that had to do with foreign bacteria/microbes, that people living their may not necessarily have had to worry about, but in other countries also the world pollution thing is really fucking up the water supply and they don't necessarily have the infrastructure in place to rectify that...

is about a community in Cali that lives near a power plant, where the pollutants from the plant had seeped into the ground and fucked up the local water...Giving many people tumors, cancer and other diseases...The movie follows their class action suit agains the power company, who were of course denying it was their fault...

Come to think of it I dunno if they specified that it was well water, I just assumed because it was a rural community...But it might have been their piped water, which is even more frightening...

It was set somewhere out in the desert, I'm thinking 29 palms, which isn't *that* far from L.A....It was just frightening how so many people in that area had been fucked up from the water, including the livestock, etc.

I can't waste money on bottled water especially at work where 6-8oz cost over a $1.75. So I just get a cup fill it with ice and run the hot water container used for hot tea.
Before I got a filter I would boil a big pot of water, pour it in a picture and let it cool.

I'm a little leary about tap water from any state based on information from a classmates research project on the Minnesota and Wisconsin water supply. When using tap water in California there was always a strange taste and if I left a slightly wet dish rag in the sink(dry)overnight it would feel gooey and would take a long time to rinse the goo out of it. Because the Chicago River is so nasty and Lake Michigan has an Ecoli problem every summer I refuse to drink tap water here.
