"Parable of the Sower"

I'm currently reading this book and there was a passage that caught my attention while i was reading it.

the main character speaks about being prepared for the future and knowing how to survive on the bare essentials
and i started to wonder about why people don't bother to learn these things, ie: purifying their own water, etc..., especially since we are going to war

so i want to know for all you activists who support this and that cause, are you REALLY ready for what the future might hold? you have the gift of gab, but can you survive alone in a war environment?

do you know what bushes or bugs you can survive on? do you know how to assemble shelter, or defend yourselves with hand to hand combat?

can you survive?

how about we share survival tactics?

i had a discussion about this with my boy
and i was like why do you think most people won't learn these survival skills?

i wondered if it was out of fear (just the thought of possibly needing these skills in the future) or out of laziness

and he said most ppl just probably don't think they'll ever really need it. but there was an incident that happened this weekend. we were at a club and this guy tried to violate, and my boy was about to fight. and i felt like in that situation *I* should be able to defend myself. and i plan to take it upon myself to learn to defend myself so that i don't need anyone to "fight for me."

i think everyone can benefit from these skills even if they are never used. extra knowledge never hurt nobody.

that's why I had to put that book down for about a year. Had me freaked out more than anything has EVER freaked me out before. I was in the middle of the book and I just couldn't read anymore...first of all, the time wasn't far enough in the future for my comfort, and second it took place too close to where I was (I was at school and Claremont and the book takes place basically in a Pasadena of the future). Too real. Butler is not playing with the parable trilogy...she's speaking the truth, and it's scary as hell.

This is something that is being worked on here in Bmore....

1) How to build a structure

2) What can you eat and not eat in the bush,

etc, etc.

Parable of the Talents, the sequel to Sower, is even more depressing than it's predecessor. Also, wait until you read Walter Mosely's "Futureland"- very realistic and depressing as well.

Octavia is definitely plugged into the truth, because we are seeing parts of Sower unfold right before our very eyes.

i just finished this book and it was a lil too prophetic.

i agree that it would take ALOT for someone to survive the initial shock and it seemed like a stretch to accept that some one so young and saddled with her....."sensitivities" could survive in that world

i think no one of us REALLy know how we would react.....it's prolly just about getting over the initial shock.....managing not to assume the virtual fetal position....and pushing thru the eventual depression/despair

i suspect that i would prolly revert to days back in Nicaragua living on my family's farm....though these were brief stays in my early childhood.....i think this would go a loong way to help stave off the shock...we all have prolly picked up ALOT in our travels/readings/channel surfing.....etc....and have never had reason to salvage/call on these resources, given a situation like that if we worked collectively and didn't drown in our own anxiety we'd give ourselves a chance.

how people learn to do without, when it's absolutely necessary.

We have talked about this group of Mayans who are descendants of that highly "developed" nation...they're now basically hunter-gatherers. The way we organize ourselves and our cultures are not static, we can adapt, if we want to.

its one of the cheapest and most versatile things you can own. it can be used as a poncho, rain-proof roof, blanket, waterproof bag for safekeeping of food, and if it's clear, it can be used in still construction (see my previous reply)

it was about only one possible future.
& that's a future brought about by the absence of any activism.

there was no resistance that i could find to what was happening to them. everyone either hid out, played along or got caught up.

the only possible resistance was those people refusing to engage in the worst or human nature in order to survive. no real direct challenge to the system they were a part of.

i would never imagine the picture o.b. drew as the future. there has always been a history of resistance & it's moments created by those people that move history forward. & since resistance &/or rebuilding has never been easy it makes since to be prepared for it.

so am i? not hardly.

i don't think we are close to that as a future. it would be leaving out a major equation for what is or isn't possible to leave out the millions who would actively resist such a future.
it would be silly of me to base my preparedness on what's depicted there.

as far as what seems more likely to happen, there are some things i need to have more in line. one thing would definitely be more informed about what IS going on in the world. that's probably the best way to guage how to prepare. aside from that, at this moment it seems pretty important to have more like-minded people in my life.

are you preparing yourself?
do you have a survival pack ready?

i mean things happen, ie: wtc, earthquakes, hurricanes

these basic survival skills and packs can be used for anything at anytime

the point of this post was to share tactics, which only two ppl are doing. instead everyone is talking, but not sharing skills, or asking info on how to survive.

it makes me wonder/worry.....

its not a matter of should...nobody wants to, but shit happens, should you still not be prepared for it anyways? just because you dont want to envision it does it mean you still should know basic survival skills?

>learning survival techniques wouldnt be a waste of knowledge

who said that?
i want to learn, like i said in the initial post i didn't read the book. are you about sharing the information, or being condescending towards mo'fos that's "talking"?

>the reason i put up this post was so that ppl would know what to >put in the packs, i am putting mine together this weekend

and so i asked what should go in them. hello? i don't care when your putting a bag together, what does that have to do with what goes in the bag and survival skills?

>sigh....this post is sharing info.....>

what's the sigh about? your saying the post is for sharing info yet when i ask information on said things you wanna huff and puff about it?

>but i would make sure i had the essentials, clean water, food, >clean clothes, knife/gun, etc...learn how to build my own >shelter if need be

i guess it would be too much too ask what type of foods should one "pack"? or what to do when the water and food run out?

yep...2 much

>why do yall make preparation sound like a crime?>

ya'll who? all im doing is asking questions.

lol the only person being condesecending is you
there are like 2 ppl on this post listing any information
everyone else is just talking, but not really sharing any info. like you for example. what are you sharing? instead of attacking me you could be sharing your knowledge.

>and so i asked what should go in them. hello? i don't care
>when your putting a bag together, what does that have to do
>with what goes in the bag and survival skills?

see what i mean...
>
>what's the sigh about? your saying the post is for sharing
>info yet when i ask information on said things you wanna
>huff and puff about it?

lol...you're a trip, who's huffing and puffing? i sigh because of posters like you: taking a useful topic and making this an post debate

>i guess it would be too much too ask what type of foods
>should one "pack"? or what to do when the water and food run
>out?

instead of coming at me the way you are, you COULD ask specifics. but you didnt. i'm here to learn as well. i never said i had all the answers
>
>yep...2 much
>
do you have ANYTHING to contribute to this post other than complaining?

jeez...continue complaining if you like, but i won't be responding

from my first post i said i didn't read the book, hence my KNOWLEDGE on the subject is limited. that explains me ASKING questions to get the "knowledge"..get it?

practice what you preach, all i said was i don't see you "sharing" shit. as someone who initiated the topic, don't you think its makes sense to contribute what you expect everyone else to?

no one's complaining, i just called you out on some shit that seemed type suspect to me...

but for arguments sake, i'll just wait for the "sharing of info" to take its coarse within this post. peace

hand to hand combat? Thats funny.

I believe that survival is a natural instinct. You don't need
to school yourself on that. How can you make preparations for
survival when you can't predict the situations/troubles you
might face in the future?

You can't always fight hand to hand combat. What if the person
is ten times bigger and more skilled than you are? Will you go
hand to hand? I don't think so. In this case you might have totaly different options: You either run or shoot your object
with a gun.

My point is: It is impossible to prepare one self for every
kind of possible threat/misfortune. When the time come for
you to go, you must go peacepully.

for actually answering the post
seems like youre one of the only few

so far this is what i've thought of:

knife, 2 liters of water, trash bags, boots or sneakers, clean clothes, dried food (granola, dried fruit) first aid kit, journal/pen, compass, tampons, radio, flash light and a pack of batteries, and a blanket

thats all i can think of now
im waiting to see what other things ppl suggest

i'm also going to take a self defense class (which i think is particularly good for women) and fam has told me to how purify water

Are you using the bleach method for purifying water? You can go to a travel store and get the purification tablets too.

its funny cause heads on here think i'm only speaking about that sort of condition. what i was trying to get ppl to think about was putting together a survival pack, and learning basic skills. i merely stated that that particular book got me thinking about it.

there are hurricanes, black outs, rapists, and a myriad of other reasons why knowing these things can be useful. preparation never hurt anyone. but it seems as though ppl are afraid to even think of the possibility of something unexpected happening. instead of being unprepared and living in fear, you can perhaps curb the fear by learning these survival skills. one less thing to worry about if and when the time comes.

but you know this, so there's no need to preach to the choir
