"Macgruder the Genius Part 2."

Can we please discuss the Genius of The Boondocks Episode

that covers Iraq.
Two white military cats walk in the store and take what they want. The store clerk (Sadam Hussein) says "you have to pay". The two white cats (The US) pull out and tell him to drop his weapon. He states he doesn't have a weapon (WMD). He then replies "Hey guys, it's me, your father helped me build this place" (BushSr>Sadam>Iraq). Then a police officer (other countires, the UN, etc.) who's uncertain what to do pulls out. He even states "I don't see a weapon" to which the one white cat pulls a gun on him and says "Who's side are you on?" (your either with us or against us). They threaten and threaten... until he joins them... then they start blasting. The store owner has backup who shoots back... so the so called soldier says "they shooting back", to which Huey says "Of course... you started shooting first". Genius. Pure Genius.

Not to mention, the cop gets killed (innocent soldier who is too dumb to know any better) and the crowd applauds.
Genius. Pure Genius.

Let's allow this to bleed into a discussion about Iraq, white people, manifest destiny, and their problem with control and ownership.

Now that you know? That's like Miles Davis... I love it when people say "that's a cool song... yeah it's good" and then they hear the real meaning of the song and boom... it changes everything. Like In the Air of the Night... Phil Collins watching his brother's killer die by drowning and does nothing... damn if that doesn't change the drums coming in I don't know what does...

http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/someair.htm

Claim: Phil Collins wrote the song In the Air Tonight after witnessing an incident in which a man refused to come to the aid of a drowning swimmer.

Status: False.

Example:

The story has to do with Phil Collins supposedly watching his close friend drown from a nearby cliff, while he stood helpless, too far away to rescue. In addition, supposedly there was a man who could have rescued the friend but just stood idly by. Then, Phil writes a song about the experience and gives the man a front row ticket to the show where he premieres the song. While Phil sings the song to him, the spotlight is on the man in the front row.

Variations: There are many variations in the details of this seemingly straightforward legend:

*
The song is usually said to be a first-person account, but it is sometimes I've seen your face before, my friend reported that Collins based the song on an incident he heard about (but did not witness).

*
The time lapse between Collins' witnessing the incident and his writing the song varies: he wrote the song right away, he waited several years, or he wrote the song many years later (because he was a child when the incident took place).

*
The nature of the tragic incident also varies: it is most often a man standing idly by while someone else drowns (or nearly drowns), but other forms mention a deliberate drowning (i.e., murder), a rape (of Collins' wife), and Collins' catching his wife in an adulterous act.

*
The victim takes on one of several identities: Collins' brother, Collins' wife (but only when the incident involves a rape), a close friend of Collins', a stranger, a rapist (whom Collins recognizes as his wife's attacker and refuses to help), and Phil Collins himself (who supposedly nearly drowned when a boat he was sailing in capsized).

*
Collins himself does not aid the drowning victim himself because he is either too drunk (or stoned), too far away, or too busy soliciting help.

*
In versions where Collins learns the identity of the killer/rapist (sometimes by hiring a private detective), he invites the man to an upcoming concert (sometimes specifically arranged to take place in the man's home town) or sends him tickets anonymously.

*
At the subsequent concert, Collins premieres "In the Air Tonight," which he sings while a spotlight shines on the invited guest (or while he stares at the man, without the spotlight). In some variations Collins never learns the man's identity and sings the song at every concert as an anonymous accusation.

*
The results of Collins' musical revelation vary: the invited stranger is humiliated (sometimes leading to a divorce or job loss), he commits suicide, or he is arrested by waiting policemen.

Origins: In the
Air Tonight (as well as most of Collins' 1981 Face Value album) deals with his bitterness and frustration over the end of his marriage to his first wife, Andrea. As Collins has repeatedly explained, the lyrics are not based on any specific real-life event.

Last updated: 12 September 2000

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_The_Air_Tonight

Years later, Collins commented on the legends about the song in a BBC World Service interview:

I don't know what this song is about. When I was writing this I was going through a divorce. And the only thing I can say about it is that it's obviously in anger. It's the angry side, or the bitter side of a separation. So what makes it even more comical is when I hear these stories which started many years ago, particularly in America, of someone come up to me and say, 'Did you really see someone drowning?' I said, 'No, wrong'. And then every time I go back to America the story gets Chinese whispers, it gets more and more elaborate. It's so frustrating, 'cos this is one song out of all the songs probably that I've ever written that I really don't know what it's about, you know.

And what does that have to do with Iraq or Aaron Macgruder's episode? Just curious. Please dissect that for me.

first... this has been stated over and over again...
and two.. this has very little to do with the post. The post is about the Iraq episode... not Phil Collins. The fact that you would even go through the trouble shows you WANT me to be wrong... hahaha... sorry potnah... I'm not. just get over it and move on.

I saw the site that gave your wack example... it was collected on the net in 94. Almost ten years after the song was released... no.

here are the lyrics.
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
I’ve been waiting for this moment, all my life, oh lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord

Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I’ve seen your face before my friend
But I don’t know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off the grin, I know where you’ve been
It’s all been a pack of lies

And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
I’ve been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord
And I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life, oh lord, oh lord

Well I remember, I remember don’t worry
How could I ever forget, it’s the first time, the last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep your silence up, no you don’t fool me
The hurt doesn’t show; but the pain still grows
It’s no stranger to you or me

And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord...

that being said you could clearly understand why people came to the conclusion.

Actually... the way the story worked (and your site was wrong) was that Phil watched another man watch another man drown. Since the man didn't help the man... eventually he sent him front row tickets to his show... during the song, as legend has it, he sang the song to him.
But of course...
petty ass motherfucker.
Now... on to the post.

if you want to be wrong, carry on. i was just trying to help you not look ignorant.

This one comes from Phil Collins' appearance on VH-1's Storytellers in 1997:

".....(In The Air Tonight) is a song with many faces. And the truth is, is that I don't what it's about. The way I write lyrics is I open my mouth and I see what comes out. And I was going through an unpleasant divorce and I guess I was very angry, I was very bitter, I was very upset, and I think you can probably tell that from the song. But all these stories, it's like Chinese mysteries. Whenever I come to America, I hear a new bit. There's this person who reckons that I saw someone drowning, and I witnessed the thing, and then I invited the guy to come to the concert, and sat him down in the front row, and sang this song. All I did was write the song really! But anything you hear, let it be said right here, right now, anything you hear about this song is not true."

having not been involved in the phil collins absurdity, perhaps i can try to calm down the heat between y'all (unlikely, but i like to try):

1. someone brings up an urban legend involving phil collins and his song to make a point
2. someone else points out the fact that the collins story is false
3. they start arguing about whether or not it matters that the collins story is false
4. NO ONE ELSE GIVES A FUCK (just had to add that. sorry. I'll get back to being serious now)

It seems that the story about collins is false. it also was tangential to the bulk of the post. you can both be right, or both be wrong, but the vitriol is absolutely amazing and absurd.

feel free to now call me horrible things for jumping into the middle of this...

clever vs. genius

When used in a discussion, expresses similar sentintiment, although not the same. Why go further with this?

but I think what he is trying to say is while he thinks it's good, clever, what have you, that the term genius is thrown around too much today. I agree with him it is... but I don't think this is one of those cases.

For example... a cat told me the other day "Dj Premier is the new John Coltrane" to which I replied "That is the biggest insult in the world to John Coltrane... he is no John Coltrane... he is Premier.. and there is a huge difference." Now here's the catch... I love both... I think both have created great work.

I know what Jah is saying... I hear him.

what other black performer has had the right to openly speak his mind on television?

Even Dave Chappelle stays a tad bit apolitical... racial, sure... all day... but a bit apolitical...

the Richard Pryor show? yes... okay sure... be even he was marked heavy for censorship...

and while Macgruder is... his eight episodes have tackled more issues than probably all four seasons (two for each Rich and Dave) combined...
perhaps it's the relevance of now (cause Rich did tackle certain items... slavery, Idi Amin, alchoholism, multicultural givings, and so on... way more than Dave)

PURE GENIUS.

It really is... from the storylines to the artwork...
money the Blind Nigga Samurai?!??!?! That alone is genius. Hell the Wu Segment in the woods is the ill... by itself.

That's not the metaphor. Sam Jackson's character joined Charlie Murphy in the war. Europe did not. Only Britain (and, as GW would add, Poland! Don't forget Poland!) did. Sam Jackson is Donald Rumsfeld (his stupid comments that sound like logic but are bs).

The store owner is not Saddam. Saddam was a complete totalitarian ass. The store owner is the Iraqi people. Saddam was not confused and innocent, he was crazy and stupid.

The cop was the American military, pressured into believing shit that obviously isn't true ("officer, he's got a weapon pointed at you...the absence of evidence is not necessarily the lack of evidence" "wait, I think I can see the gun now"). Also, the overwhelming firepower is completely ineffective, mimicking the "shock and awe" campaign that didn't do what it was supposed to. the crowd outside was the american public, cheering the idiots who started the whole mess.

it was pretty good, clever. but i withhold genius because it was a little heavy-handed. genius, to me, is more subtle, more challenging.

the line about the korean shop is pretty funny ("just north of here". ha!)

Charles Schultz? He was trying to destroy the popular christmas myth... and do a slight parady to the Peanuts

aqua, i'm not talking about the subject matter. go back and check the flow, scenery and rhythm of that episode. it was classic peanuts all the way. even the music hinted at a charlie brown x-mas.

and considering that mcgruder admittedly is seriously influenced by schultz, it ain't a stretch to see it in that particular episode, brah.

This episode was absolute GENIUS. Aaron McGruder is brilliant. Did everybody catch last night's episode? Every time I think "Man...this show can't possibly get any better..." IT DOES.

I watched last night and just said "W O W" like ten times.

there is no way anyone can argue with me over Aaron Macgruder being a genius... they just can't... look at the range alone...
per episode... so far he has tackled in one season what most people couldn't do in their entire career...

stack all the black shows u know... they don't even compare...
that was amazing.

56. "What I love about "The Boondocks" is how it sticks"
In response to Reply # 52

EVERYBODY. It shows how hypocrisy of the European-dominated society that we live in is...it shows the effect of war-time hysteria on people's common sense...it shows how so-called Christianity is full of pagan influences that have nothing to do with Jesus or the Bible...it shows how normally reasonable men can be turned into fools by women...but most of all I love how the show forces us to look at ourselves as a people wih brutal honesty. And while the show is obviously satire, in every episode I can see someone (either a personal associate, a public figure, or a collective of people) I know, and they are portrayed very accurately.

I know I can't think of a show that I have ever seen that EVERY WEEK hits issues like "The Boondocks".
