"Aiight y'all. Time to revist the house rules in Activist."

So far we've tweaked the rules a little bit as it pertains to swipes, post redundancy, personal attacks, etc.

*First off, how do you feel about Activist as it stands NOW?

*Has it gotten better or worse in the past few months, if so how and why?

*What would you like to see more of?

*What would you like to see less of?

*How has the moderation disappointed you, or pleased you?

*How has the discussions on the board dissappointed you, or pleased you?

*What policies do you think would be beneficial?

*What policies have been weak, or to stronghanded?

Holla back. This is ya'lls forum. We only here to help keep it str8.

A little slow. It needs the lunatics back!

>*Has it gotten better or worse in the past few months, if so

It changes weekly... inevitable I suppose.

>*What would you like to see more of?

Debate.

>*What would you like to see less of?

Pointless threads that go platinum.

>*How has the moderation disappointed you, or pleased you?

Can't complain.

>*How has the discussions on the board dissappointed you, or

A little drab.

>*What policies do you think would be beneficial?

A little more brutality with the daft threads. Brokenchains has the right idea.

>*What policies have been weak, or to stronghanded?

Sometimes slow to apply the rules to celebrity posters. Just kidding!

the problem with debate for the vets as I see it is that there are FEW topics we have't already extensivley addressed in the past. when uu spend that much energy and hold the archives in the regard we do...why bother?

secondly, the levels of critical thinking and debate in here vary WIDELY. when u are putting serious thought and time into a response it is more than disconcerting to have someone dismiss ur point with either poor reason or a weak stance. it's like shoveling quicksand.

thirdly, some folks on here should garner a level of respect just cus of the amount of scholarship or practical app theve had. oftentimes there is zero respect...argue, yes but come strong and salient.

but remember, the purpose of this board is to enlighten and motivate and exchange ideas. just because you debate with a moron doesn't mean that others won't see the validity in your argument, even if they do not comment.

i have watched the complaints and the bi%ching go on and on, but it is the varing degrees of difference that make the board interesting. You got far left bros, conservative bros, communists, socialists, and capitalists all here, sharing ideas. in that way, this thing is better than the UN.

an idea must be tested. there is not enough testing of ideas in our community. if someone disagrees, they are dismissed as against the 'struggle.' but it is the vetting of ideas that makes this thing so interesting.

There are several posters that I unequivocally respect, but with whom I rarely/never see eye to eye. I think this is the most
effective way to figure forth solutions.

I think that the more academic posters (and they know who they are!) should pick their battles wisely. This way people can see beyond the bullshit by looking to certain names and be confident that what is written is of some use.

why should one style of poster defer to another?

where is the disconnect between vets that feel tired, unappreciated and the newbies that are full of energy and what they feel are new ideas.

is it as simple as a thing of repspect? if so, isn't that repspect aa two way street?

how can we as posters. and how can the mods facillitate, and foster growth for factions in two very different places.

what model can be employed?

Your question, and your previous comment, reflect a frustration that I think is shared both here, and the macro-level.

Those 'vets' feel that they need not prove themselves, while us newbees challenge all ideas with equal vigor.

Yet, heavy is the head that wears the crown. Teach and live by example, and your numbers will grow. We are all succeptable to a cogent argument. And even the most subborn of our lot will conceade a losing argument.

HOWEVER- resorting to mere name calling, 'uncle tom' accusations, and the like, garner neither respect nor admiration. If we should 'blame whitey' explain why. If socialisim is king, be prepared to defend it.

Personally, I wouldn't know a vet from Erica Badu from a Mod ('ok' notwithstanding), but I know that no one's ideas or thoughts, if intelligently considered, is any better or worse than anyone else's here. We play in a highly theoretical sandbox of politics, socialogy, economics and religion/metaphysics. Each one contains few axioms, and as a result, none of us here are any more or less qualified to render an opinion. Nor should any of us be surprised when the flaws in our opinions are exposed. I show respect, but I offer equal respect to all participants. Sorry.

Granted, 9 to 5 is how you survive. I ain't trying to survive, I'm trying to live it to the limit and love it alot.

...like I get benefits or some ish.

Anyway...

>*First off, how do you feel about Activist as it stands NOW?

Not very interesting or engaging intellectually or activating in any way. I get the news from other sources...don't need it repeated unless it is to start a dialog.

>*Has it gotten better or worse in the past few months, if so
>how and why?

Fear.

>*What would you like to see more of?

Not sure.

>*What would you like to see less of?

Platforms, positions, ideology, rhetoric. I am tired of it.

>*How has the moderation disappointed you, or pleased you?

Neither.

>*How has the discussions on the board dissappointed you, or
>pleased you?

See above.

>*What policies do you think would be beneficial?

Nothing but more critical thinking and intelligent dialogue would be interesting to me.

There are some really great discussions and posts with resources that often get overlooked and drop off the front page. Perhaps a couple of anchors that stay up for a day or two (or until people have a chance to see it and respond) will change the "face" of okactivist...and encourage more dialogue.

I think that would be a good idea to start up again, having post reference topics from the books.

I mean I love to debate (argue) but it has to be more than about religion, and I'm willing to spend my lunch at the library.

I could give the general argument of each chapter, say, once a week and then rather than have everyone read the entire book, people could ask questions, make comments or offer criticisms. I think this book has extreme value to anybody's political convictions. Of course, I will include exerpts and quotations as well.

1st - Thank you for the time you put into this.

>*First off, how do you feel about Activist as it stands NOW?

pretty good

>
>*Has it gotten better or worse in the past few months, if so
>how and why?

not around enough to give accurate comment

>*What would you like to see more of?

more debate & discussion on how to cause change
>
>*What would you like to see less of?

inverse of above
>
>*How has the moderation disappointed you, or pleased you?

two thumbs up
>
>*How has the discussions on the board dissappointed you, or
>pleased you?

overall decent. Would like to see more openness to people asking why and telling people how they can educate themselves on a topic. Not sure if there are others out there with the perception but, I would be more active if I didn't feel that not knowing something would be slammed.

>*What policies do you think would be beneficial?

hard to put limits on what someone should or shouldn't say
>
>*What policies have been weak, or to stronghanded?

got nothing

mostly I agree with the other responses – I liked the idea of a book or picking a specific topic to look at in-depth once in a while

Well, it depends what results you are actually looking for...

What do you mean?

I don't mind folks presenting hunches as hunches, but presenting these hunches as 'truth' and dropping several a week, only serves to clutter the boards and lessen the credibility of the board itself.

I mean, I think BrokenChains is a brilliant poster, even if I rarely agree with his pov. He brings academic clout to the boards, and yet he doesn't post much now. (I realize I haven't been here that long but I've noticed it in this short period). I don't even seem to see many posts from you these days. And there are other great posters - it would be inappropriate to name them all - but those too now rarely post.

I don't envy your job and I appreciate you do a good one, but a board like this which enjoys international access has incredible potential and ultimately I don't think its fulfilling that at present.

I am aware that MANY people have no problem with that, but this is a chance for EVERYONE to have a voice and to share that voice. This wouldn't limit that to some degree?

True. Funnily enough, when I wrote that response I admitted to being an academic snob, but edited it before posting.

This is the crux of the problem; a free rein and you start you see the threads you don't want but tight restriction is unfair. We must remember this is a forum, and not a lecture hall (a privilege not everybody enjoys).

Perhaps you should consider what Nettrice suggested and anchor more threads. That way, everybody is free to post, whilst the threads Chike and yourself deem to be of merit can float at the top for a while...

time. Last time we appended rules we gave 2 weeks and folk was upset saying they didn't have time to respond. This time there can't be any such complaints.

Yes.

I think you the anchoring idea is good. Anchor what you see as credible. Let the rest just be. With the exception of those that violate the rules that are already established.

I have no problem with hunches being posted, even thosed posted at fact. There is always a decenting view that is express. I like to come here and get different pov's of world events and such. Helps to get a sense of the bigger picture. Everything isn't as cut and dry as made to seem or as elaborately complex as some think. The prsentation of both I believe is necessary.

You think?

I have only posted on GD once or twice and had my (IMO reasonable) threads deleted on sight.

That doesn't happen here.

on weak posts.

Well, both of these actions would be subjective as HELL.

Ya'll feel comfortable in Chike and I making judgement calls?

If so, we'll add them to the list of rules of engagement in activist.

we trust you'll but there is a fine line between a weak post and an open post that encourages lateral thinking on board. we can sometimes get caught up in our activism. Unless its blantantly weak/ innapropriate mayb guage the responses,i.e, "lock this ish" from multiple posters is fairly good indicator.

just a thought.

thanks for the work you'll put into this.
