Archaeologists working at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello plantation have uncovered what they believe is a Jefferson-era slave cemetery that may contain as many as 110 graves.
Officials with the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, which owns and manages the estate, said experts have confirmed the existence of uninscribed grave markers and shafts they think contained the bodies of 10 adults and eight children. The contents of two other graves could not be identified.All the graves were in a 75-by-65-foot patch of wooded land near the southern end of the visitor parking area, about 2,000 feet from the main house.
Because of the acidic quality of the soil, experts said, it is highly unlikely that intact human remains or any artifacts other than coffin nails exist in the shafts.
Officials said a depression in the ground tipped them off years ago to thepossible existence of a burial ground. Test excavations on the site began in February and revealed the presence of 20 graves that were not disturbed. No remains were disinterred.
There are no written records of blacks' graves at Monticello, and no slave burials from Jefferson's time have been identified previously, officials said.
The excavation ended March 16. Officials said that they plan to erect a sign identifying the site and that decisions about a memorial marker and dedication ceremony will be made later this year.
