"Capitalism"

Anyone have any really good books describing the good / bad aspects of capitalism?

Also the same for Communism ?

I'm looking to enlighten myself, not get into heated discussions on this topic.

Thanks - Jose

C.L.R James has some good books on it, Walter Rodney's "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa", Angela Davis' "Women, Race, and Class" and of course, Karl Marx

oh, and a great movie that symbolizes the capitolist system is Matewon. (about the labor movement)

The first is obvious: "The Communist Manifesto" It's only 30 pages or so, and it's a really good synopsis of Marx's work, both the good and the bad.

The second is a book called "Jihad Versus McWorld", or "McWorld Versus Jihad". About the conflict of values between global capitalism and competing ideologies.

I just bought this book called The Lexus and The Olive Tree written by Thomas Friedman about globalization and how it is affecting traditional cultures amongst other things. I havent got around to reading it yet (gotta finish the broke diaries first) but i heard its supposed to be really good.

If you want to read a fiction book on the results of capitalism and communism read George Orwell's "Animal Farm". Orwell wrote during a period when communism was growing rapidly and this book reflects the time period. If you do not read the book at least read the intro and preface to the book.

Plus, the paperback will only cost you $5-$6.

"1984" is just as politically charged...although that goes more into the cause/effect of fascism vs. capitalism or communism.

i think one point that a lot of people miss is that none of the so called communist countries were really communist but were rather just state capitalist as opposed to market capitalist like the US, they still had the central tenets of capitalism like wage labor, emphasis on growth, etc..., you might want to check out some anarchist literature, proudhon, kropotkin, and others, because what is really wrong with capitalism is the domination it entails

plutocracy noun
a system of government in which the richest people in a country rule or have power
It's time we put an end to plutocracy.

A plutocracy is a country where the richest people have power.
This country is supposed to be a democracy, but it seems to me as if it's becoming more of a plutocracy all the time.

The plutocracy is the richest people in a country who have power in it.
The area is a favourite winter vacation spot among the plutocracy.

then all nations are plutocracies.

The idea of government is that it has the unbridled power to enforce ideals and standards within the borders of a nation. In order to recieve that power, you must gain the resources necessary. Since the whole concept of being "rich" is that you have possession or access to more resources than a significant majority of the people it's only common sense that a country is going to be led by the most resourceful and powerful. There will always be rich and there will always be poor; the question is whether you allow ones within government to be rich, as its doubtful any national government official in the world is going hungry, or are you going to allow opportunities that will enhance wealth among the citizenry of that said nation. The choice is yours.
