"We need an agenda!"

What exactly is it that you want to accomplish. There is a lot of talk about the black cause and liberation, freedom, respect, culture... the list goes on....But what exactly is it that you want to accomplish. What do you want to do. Together, if we put our minds in it, and brainstorm, then we can develop an agenda and start making stuff happen. But frankly, everything is so general, ambiguous and unfiltered, it is hard for us, (poeticlocks and soul) to even find a place to begin and BEGIN. We know what we don't want, but what are the steps to getting there. Can we develop some sort of agenda and stick to it in our own lives.

It is about the woman DInah, daugher of Joseph. She is only mentioned once in the bible and that is when she is raped. Anita Diamant took her character and built a whole story around her. It incorporates a lot of facts from that day and age into a fictional story. the book addresses a lot of women's issues and it is a real easy read. I enjoyed it a lot.

besides straight up slaughter f the wicked...

...i wnat to build an afrikan centered school system, being that educational institutions are the secondary (to family) for the transmission of culture/values/ideas, i would like to establish something new and more importantly, effective. templates for exactly what i want to do are already made, and templates for nationbuilding "the ultimate goal" are already written. In the book "Nationbuilding" by K. Agyei Akoto I find my road map. If nationbuilding is a goal of yours, then the plan is here.

But, there is a school named after Marcus Garvey in Cali that has started doing this. I am not sure how effective the school is or what exactly they are teaching... but I will definitely have to find out and get back to you on this. But, I want to build a nation basically in the same sense that you do, where we hae essential freedom. Meaning we can food, cloth, medicate, and educate our people at our own whims. Completely independent.
That is what I want.

Okay, it's not that I don't agree with the basic idea behind raising up schools that function to foster culture within black youth. It's a good idea, but really... is this inclusive or exclusive? Either of those answers are going to cause a multitude of problems that would tear the agenda to shreads. Where are the resources going to come from? Does any body feel me on this... And what are YOU doing to push towards that goal. It's a great idea, but in practical terms... I don't know. I'd be all for it though, and I know we have the potential.

Yeah, I'm going to have to check that author out.

Okay, so like all other movements in history... the idealisms are there. I feel they need to be more developed though. PoeticaL and I were discussing this in the car a second ago... I think that this will also have to take into consideration that most blacks are Christian. A move like this will promote separation within the faith and that's not going to fly. You seem to be talking about dividing on the basis of race. Like a asked her... what is race? you replied children whose skin is darker than paper bags... which begs the question "how black is black enough?" To this question PoeticaL decided maybe the division should be between those who are conscious and those who are not. This is entirely vague and non-specific. Nope.

How do you get the desired population?

when i come into their presence...

initially i would like people to be led there from different existing charter schools and groups that have black peoples' and afrikan traditions' interests at heart...ultimately people would come from the example they see.

i gotta master that on my personal level first.

>>this is not based on skin color, but on Uta's inner requirements?

and i'm gonna be as reverse discriminatory as everyone else...this shit is for all the dreads that didn't get a job in the food service industry...and all the people who wouldn't shave for the job at that 5 star hotel..

but on the real, the commitment to nationbuilding would be the only requirement, it'd be easy to weed people out with those requirements alone...you ask somebody to denounce the idea of capitalism to live in a communal environment and you turn away over half the greedy americans right there!

the standards will be culturally based...and geared around afrikan ideals. most people woon't be able to handle it, like most people don't have the discipline to eat a balanced diet and know they couldn't if they tried. people know the deal. i'm not gonna sign up for a soccar league right now cuz I KNOW i am not physically able to run with experienced cats at this point, people know their abilities and many won't step...

those that do, are in for a challenge, realize it, and know they're supposed to be there to accept it. so by the expectations alone you won't have to do much to discern who comes and who doesn't

When the europeans told folks they were going to discover a foreign land, bring millions of slaves to it to do all the work and completely run an entire culture of people, that are made to beleive they actually have subcultures, and get bookooo rich of it as well as keep all the white people rich and benefiting for the next 500 years after slavery, do you think anybody beleived they could do it?Evrything starts with a missionstatement. And if everything wasn't doubted people would have nothing to live for. So, I appreciate your doubt, it only makes me work harder.

How would it be different from Afrikan-centered schools that are already up and running? I've heard of a number of them, in places like Detroit, New York and elsewhere.

If you don't already know how they run their stuff and how yours will be different, you should pay a visit to one ASAP. If their vision is similar enough to your own, I got one word for you: UMOJA*.

well, knowing what you don't want is the first step....

planning, preperation, patience, and perservance are the things that you need to set and stick to an agenda....we as black folks don't plan, don't prepare, nor perservere, nor are we patient....we talk, talk, we talk, and we talk....or we come up with an idea and half develop it and wanna blame the man when it fails.....or when a setback comes we give up instead of sticking to it and then we blame the man for setting us back....or if the results don't come fast enough we scrap the whole thing.....

you two must understand that change is slow and growth is a process...you must see the long term as well as the short term....and when you don't see things changing as you think they should access and evaluate the situation, before you make any decisions.....you may have to change something, you may have to be patient a little longer.....

continue to educate yourself outside of as well as inside the classroom.....learning should be a life-long process.....just because you in college don't mean you know it all....you never will.....

always be open to new ideas and new ways of doing things....be aware and pay attention to events and happenings around you....

be accepting of others....and seek first to understand, then be understood....

i think that's enough to get you started.....

the journey is everything, once you get were your going....seek a higher level.....there is always a deeper level to be reached...

peace in love,
philia

Thanks for the words kid. Right now we are working on a mission statement for our organization, a name and a logo. We have basically started and we are four members strong. Well, the people that are helping to put the group together. But, onc we get our mission statement together, we are going to go out and get more people involved. We wanna come correct though from jump. So, we are going to take the little funs we got, put soemthing together that will attract others and get it started. If you have any dieas for our mission statement, please let me know. WE need all the help we can get. So far, our main purpose is education. We want to eduacte people about their history, black pride, wholistic living and loving, unified black families. So, let me know if you have any ideas.

hmmmmmmmmm, that one is gone be difficult, because i'm not in the trenches with yall.....but your mission statement should touch on all the things you want your organization to accomplish...

for example:

our organization's mission is to promote education by teaching black folks about their history and holistic ways of living so that they may love and have pride in themselves therefore strengthening familial bonds...

that's a rough rough....but hopefuly that will get the wheels of change rolling.....

First of all we have to come to an agreement of which is the right path to take. And if we as a people fail to do so, then we have to be prepared to make amends so that we won't have any further division amongst us. We have to agree to disagree and yet still be somewhat supportive of those who disagree with us. "I may not agree with the road that you are taking, but if you need help don't be afraid to ask me!!!"

I look back at Booker T. and W.E.B., and see that these two men had very different paths for upliftment of their people. Yet they also had a feud that stunted any full scale movement on a all encompassing level. Sure both were able to achieve success nationwide, but there was a division that hampered FULL progression of African-Americans as a people, in my opinion. Thass where I do not want African-Americans to go again. Having that division.

Education in the arts is not for everyone. Nor is vocational training. However, knowledge of the other can and should bring greater results in the end. A curriculum that emphasizes this and allows those to find and choose which one they fit best in and contribute the greatest to, is warranted. It should also be practiced that no discipline is held in higher regard because both need to work together to benefit the whole community, not just one and not the other. This was a part of the division between Washington and DuBois.

Basically, in order for us to make things happen we must be able to ork together and be able to look past disagreement and be supportive of the needs of the many. Not the needs of those few.

Get a group of like minded individuals who share the same belief and are about handlin bid'ness(yeah, no typo). Try to make sure no two are the same and not share the exact same professional expertise. When this is done go about finding out which avenue is best suited for the roup to start at first. Be it economic, educational, political, scientific, etc. Y'al must find one where there is less work to be done yet are closest to ahieving that goal. By doing this, you can have already in place a base from which you can "attack" all other areas, rather a starting point.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott was was an economic move that reached over into the sociological arena eventually that had many of it's leaders based in religion. See?

Once you get these individuals together and y'all come to a consensous(sp) of where to start, you have to make sure everybody is involved and is used properly. By that, I mean that everybody included is informed on the decisions and strategy with their input warranted to the best of their ability as well as how it is factored into the collecive's final choice.

I'm very involved with the organizations here at MIZZOU. So much so that I'm able to pull various folks for their "expertise" in certain areas and their connections to certain people so that things can get done. A group of us have certain thing we want to see get done before we leave here. One thing is that we want a permanent fixture for our Black Culture Center. So that even when the University decides to change the usage of the building, we as alums have something concrete and tangible to look at. Right now we are deciding what exactly should this fixture be and HOW we will solicit the funds for this fixture to be created and added to the present building that we have.

before this activist board was started a lot of people had a vision that this could be a place where people DID things and could meet others & could organize for change.

but it seems that a lot of people here that have goals and even a focused plan a lot of times can't do shit in their own neighborhoods....you have to start small and get bigger, or else you're gon be planning for the rest of your life.

so a lot of those people that had really good propasitions have gone elsewhere because it feels like all talk.

but props wbgirl she's gotten a nice group together...maybe some other's have to but it's not balanced.

and don't let the posts that are calling for physical action drop like they always do.

soul 1908 and I both have done things in and for the community, now we are ready to start planning on doing more, bigger things. It does all start with a mission. mY question is this though,
Why do people project the past onto everything. I know it is hard to take everything you hear and beleive it, but just because some people were all talk and never got anything done dosen't meant that the greater masses will not either nor does it mean that every potential person that talks about something should get the lecture that he/she needs to be about it and stop talking about it. I feel like when we give these lectures to some people, they do loose site of their dreams and goals because they feel like somebody is trying to stop them and get in the way. (Not everybody is strong enough to take the pressure) Only offering a negatively connotated suggestion that, "You might as well quit talking cuz you ain't gone do shit." INstrad, just ask, what can I do to help? and if it never gets off that ground, at least you can say I tried instead of "I told you so!"
And I do feel you on not letting the action posts get to the bottom!

True. The real question is what will I, you, all of us sacrifice for this vague justice we all speak of? If we cannot even set our own minds to accomplish a small task , how will we conquer the mass of oppressive evil that selfishly casts so many out of its inner circle of wealth and prosperity? If you can tell yourself that you know you have the kind of strength it will take to dedicate yourself and your life to this unspecific yet incredibly real force of oppression, then talk to me, and we join forces, then we connect with our people and the group grows exponentially and quickly there is now half a nation ready to stand up and never go back. This may sound nieve, but if your mind sees the unjustice and you know it exists, and you acknowledge this, how could you live with yourself if you didn't work on diminishing it everyday of your existence on this planet? We must get to a point in our spirits and our minds where we refuse to take the shit anymore... anymore.

Hey I just went through and read and thought some of these very inresting, motivating ideas and theories on how to enhance our school community as Black people.

Being a sista, who tutors inner-city and under-developed children daily, I see what is going on and what is wrong five days a week. The ideal of starting a community or a community school that is Black concisous is a wonderful ideal and I believe is possible, and it would be made possible with two of the three most esstenial things which are Committment and Funds! The third curcuial thing we need are PARENTS.

Like I said, I work with children everyday, and this Black concsiousness and self-respect and pride of being a Black person is first established at home.

Really thought we can't talk about or even being to plan a school or community of the mantitude if you don't have Black concscious parents. So before you can build a school you most build the parents.

Those of us who are starting with OURSELVES and education our MINDS to go to the next; beyond with the government has put in our reach are on the right tracks. Certainly by education ourselves and reading books by bell hooks (who I also look reading) and African inspired books are in the right direction to blowing the sht of the roof.

Peace

P.S. May I suggest to start a way on how to gain funds read
RICH DAD POOR DAY. It is a great, easy read book. Oprah had the author on her show and I am a madd fan of Oprah. The book has a lot of captilists ideas in it but one can make madd money and gain finical education by reading this book.

thanks for the suggestion. That i what we need. we obviously cannot do it by ourselves. Not only does it take a village to raise a child, but it takes a village to start a school with thier village funds. So I ask this my people...

#1. I was explaining to my roomate that the gv't gives out many of grants, BUT, if we are funded by the government, we have to serve every US citizen by law. Something we want to a choice about. So, how and where do we find independent, black organizations that would be willing to donate to a cause like this.

#2. What about accredidation? Mybe uta can help on this one since he has the whole plan appratently laid out. As much as I would like to say, F*&K accredidation, I make own shit sccredited, if we don't have it, the children who have graduated may not have graduated at all. OR is there someone out there that knows how to get around this.

#3. Aside from money and funding, where and how would this chool b built? What part of America, what city.

#4. The process of hiring teachers. I am not worried about the children. It will catch on. Do we find teachers the same way we find ther est of our speciaized personal that we have been talking about. I would think so. What do you guys think?

My mission: "To use the arts and technology to create environments that help people (i.e. Black) empower themselves."

This had been my overarching goal since 1991. For ten years that is what I've have been working on in community-based centers, schools, etc. I don't ask myself what I want to do because I have a mission. I don't ask other people because if they are down we can work together. If not I help others when I can but I am working from my corner.

I guess there is a difference between what I do and what other think I should be doing.

Once I got together with a group of forward-thinking Black folks and we started "The Agenda" at our college. We had a mission and we were very active for nearly two years. We had it covered: weekly discussion forums, guest speakers and meetings with Dr. Jeffries and his group, a DJ and graphic production branch that was generating income, a bi-weekly newsletter and lots of other community interests. But some people had issues with female(s) running things, others wanted to work with white folks, others just wanted to make money and others only wanted to be at parties and club gigs.

By the time I graduated people were going off in different directions. They wanted to do their own things and I was left holding the torch...for a while. I went to grad school in another state and heard that "The Agenda" had lost it's focus. Funny thing was I still had mine. Some of us became successful actors, artists, designers and others still struggle to find a niche. I am one of a few who remained community focused. For a moment in time we were all together, wanting to help the Black community and then it changed.

I am all for a larger agenda but I learned the hard way that everyone (no matter how down they are) has their own personal agenda. That's why I say "start from your corner" and have a climbing mentality. No matter what happens I stay focused. If people at okayactivist truly want to start something then I am all for it but I will never abandon my mission unless I decide to change focus.

I have read enough books, listened to enough speeches and protested enough. I found myself about to be sucked up in a vast Black political vaccuum with a lot of people who were down only for the short-term or down because it looked like a fun/trendy thing to do. Some people just wanted to put themselves up on a pedestal. I decided to take another course (see mission statement above).

We need revolution. Educate people about our history, our oppression and our means of escaping our doomed fate in america. Once we are educated we organize ourselves in force we will not have a whole lot to work (funds and such) so part of organization is centralizing Black money in the Black community, with more money we can create more Black owned and operated businesses. Another problem we shall have to center on is drugs in the community, we must work to get them out and keep them out as they are a facet of the community that allows the government to target Blacks unfairly (especially since most drugs related crimes are commited by whites). This will eliminate many problems in the Black community but as for the outside powers involved (a.k.a the government and every ignorant human being who support it namely and in the majority, white people, we must arm ourselves against our oppressors and use the fear of The People's Army against them. If the fear of our people does not force them to hand power to us the only way we will survie is armed revolution which will seize the power that we need to alter the state of production in the United States, once Black people are no longer a simple tool of production and make more money than just barely enough to live and it becomes possible for Black people to rise into the same state of living as the majority of whites and we have our own establishment of power...well you got it now huh? Revolution. One Love.

HOW? are Blacks in America even ready for revolution? At every point of revolution in Black history... the people were screaming for revolution. Here we have a situation in which Blacks think things are better, and the line is not so definite.

What to do??

are Blacks in America even ready for revolution?

why would black negroes in america revolt against themselves and their way of life?

revoluitionaries are doing what they are supposed to do. the benefactors being themselves and the black negroe masses. the masses that "want" and "desire" change are only doing that, and haven't realized that ultimately their way of life is at stake if the the solutions get ushered in. wouldn't they just become even greater hypocrites if they "wanted change" without being able to "make the change" themselves? i.e. if someone is poverty stricken, they want money. since the system behind what they want is the source of their problem and the solution, the destruction of that very system (let's just call it western culture), then why would they want to help destroy the only thing they know and desire? most people want economic/social equanimity, but show them how to ge there and what the end result would be and they relaize that the status quo is really where they belong, and that an "alternative" to the problem was what they really wanted...not a solution.
