i remember like 4 separate posts by dude hating on urban and praying for him not to be OSU's next coach. can't blame him tho, once urb lost tebow and his coordinators he was a little exposed. not to mention hiring someone that solely recruits criminals to rebuild the ethics of a program is kind of a misstep. esp a guy who plays religious games with recruits to trick them into coming and then retires the next year.

o well, hope he gets hired. he should beast with braxton but i mean if lloyd carr made him and tebow his bitch i look forward to what hoke and co. will do.

seems like a legit development tho. eleven warriors (the poorly written, half-retarded step-brother of mgoblog) is reporting it.

and lol at all that bullshit you typed, especially this

" if lloyd carr made him and tebow his bitch i look forward to what hoke and co. will do."

You can act confident if you want, but every Michigan fan probably thought one thing upon hearing this news, and it was either "we're fucked" or "aww shit".

I was off the Bob Stoops bandwagon the second he choked it up this year vs Texas Tech.

Jon Gruden isnt going to coach anywhere except the NFL.

Chris Peterson and Gary Patterson aren't big enough coaches for the job, nor do they have Ohio ties.

We don't hire glorified assistants as permanent head coaches.

It's only fitting that the best CFB coach accepts the best (or at the very least, second best job) in college football. I've come around, but 2007 will always sting like a bitch.

Oh well. Here's to another decade of dominance over that half ass middle of the pack program up north, and hopefully a few BCS titles along the way.

edit, and we're keeping Fickell around as DC or asst HC? That's class, especially under the conditions that he was given the job. Well deserved, (and should help with recruiting)

lol Kyke Kalis lol

O-H...!!!

urban hasn't proved much since he lost his marquee assistants. still tho, he's prob the best option at OSU. he's a jackass that loves himself some felon players. will make OSU even more easier to hate on in this rivalry i guess.

maybe he'll have to pull his fake retirement "god told me to return" to get bri'onte dunn lmao

>and said you couldn't even imagine him coaching at OSU. but
>whatever.

I'm pretty sure I called him a pussy/flake/ and some other shit, but then the denial melted away and reality set in. EDIT, I was also super super apprehensive about running a spread. That was my number 1 gripe.

I really wanted Fickell to work out, or for us to go in a different direction. I was the lone dissenter on him coming to TOSU, but like we've said, he's arguably the best coach in CFB and easily the best fit for TOSU.

At the end of the day, that's all that matters. The only thing that sucks is being reminded of the grand I wasted flying out to that debacle in Arizona 4 years ago. I'll forgive him quick fast for the ass whooping if he brings another crystal football to the WHAC though.

>maybe he'll have to pull his fake retirement "god told me to
>return" to get bri'onte dunn lmao

The cool part about having Urban Meyer is that there's no need to get hung up over ONE recruit, like we used to with Tressel. No Dunn? No problem. Go out and sign up the next 5* RB. If the NCAA doesn't fuck us with scholarship penalties, it's going to be like USC/Caroll days (insert pay for play joke here) with the talent we're about to stockpile. You need Brionte Dunn more than we do.

Welcome home, Urban.

It's not Florida, it can never be florida but it's not bad.

And he'll be able to pull in A LOT MORE Florida/Georgia kids than they've been able to in the past.

The pipeline is wide open.

If he gets a good defense going, it's curtains.

The Big 10 is better now (with Nebraska). So I don't think he can dominate it (unless Penn State just dissolves into nothingness, which is probable).

But I'm VERY sure there is no shortage of QBs in Ohio that can run his scheme and I think Lil B can be a STAR in it.

Use that speed for once.

You've got a speed coach. Don't act like it's not important to you.

If tressel could dominate the big 10 then so could urban. i think the big 10 was a lot better 10 years ago then it was today. the addition of nebraska doesnt realy shake things up that much IMO. they have a ways to go.

butch reynolds left several years ago, if that's who you're referring to. the 'speed coach' is just a gimmicky name. if you're a strength coach then by definition you're a speed coach. i've seen quite a few programs change the nemes of their S&C to the 'speed-strength and conditioning center'. just a goofy semantics thing, really.

That shit annoyed me. I still respect him for all he's done for the school, but if I'm a young recruit and I heard some of the shit he was saying I'd be put off. Plus he has no coaching experience. IDK, I'm not so sure about it either.

i always liked and respected spielman but i found his actions during tatgate to be totally bizarre.

he unnecessarily threw tress (a supposed good friend and enormous contributor to his wife's charity) and the program under the bus ...and then fast forward to a week or two ago when every other espn talking head was crucifying paterno...spiel's becomes the level headed one that's asking everybody to wait for the facts to come out.

i look at it like this:

you have 2 hall of fame ex buckeyes/former NFL stars. one of them dropped what he was doing to come back to help his friend and his program when they needed him most. the other went out of his way to make a bad situation even worse.

coaching abilities aside, I'm taking vrabel on my staff any day of the week.

I also don't like the idea that spielman's bitching and moaning was somehow an underhanded strategy to move himself onto the OSU staff.

and a moat in front

Guess what Big Ten brethren, the top 15 players every year from Ohio just got locked down

and Firebrand nailed it with the Florida pipeline

I only wonder how long he will be into it, I really don't think it's more than 5 or 6 years at this point.

but in all honestly ive probably watched ~20 UF games from 2008-2010 and without Mullen the offense declined to the point of utter fail last year.

obviously the guy can coach, but no one is scared of urban meyer. Strong and Mullen were a lot more important to UF than anyone thought and UF struggled when they left.

beyond that, the second half of UF games last year Meyer was just checked out. you could tell by watching him on the sidelines.

i hope he does well, and he probably will. but multiple national titles and all that jazz, nah.

no argument here. It's obvious his success hinges on the coordinators he brings with him, and from what I'm hearing..that isn't something to worry about.

Is there a better coach/recruiter in the Big 10 than Urban Meyer? No.

can't blame him, he was thinking of greener pastures.

meyer has no competition in this conference. none. theres no saban, there's no miles. there's no auburn/georgia/tennessee type programs that could fuck around and compete for a national title any given year.

it wouldve been fun if michigan couldve grabbed harbaugh...but pulling in the big names is obviously not in their capability.

Tressel whooped his ass in the Alamo Bowl and Les Miles returned the favor on a larger scale in 2008..

A decade of games (if Tressel hadnt fucked up) between those two would have been good for the rivalry. Now it's going to be 3/4 years of dominance, and then another coaching search.

*edit, Harbaugh would have been great too.

this is college football. the talent pool of coaches isnt exactly filled with kindergarten teachers. we went out and got one of, if not the best coach in the game...who also just happens to be one of our own. thats what you call a grand fucking slam hire.

it was whatever to me (i had always thought he was going to bounce from UF eventually) but youre certainly entitled to your opinion. if u wanna use that as a reason to hate on him, that's fine.

and if he left cause he wanted to chill with his fam for a year and regroup then well, that's his right. it's also his right to come back to coaching if had a change of heart and if the right job opened up. i guess this was the right job.

i have a feeling "next year" is going to be the trademark slogan for OSU fans. trust me, michigan fans have been down that road. it's a dark place.

p.s. you were pretty nonresponsive to what i wrote. how do you feel about urban calling michigan's d-coordinator the best recruiter he ever had (mattison recruited tebow)? actually, how do you feel about urban listing michigan (and ND) in the same group of his dream jobs? damn that's got to burn. don't think hoke ever had eyes to coach OSU.

We hired the best coach available, while you hired Dick Rod and Brady Hoke. Think about it for a second.

>p.s. you were pretty nonresponsive to what i wrote. how do you
>feel about urban calling michigan's d-coordinator the best
>recruiter he ever had (mattison recruited tebow)?

Congrats? Good for you? Idk, you want me to be envious? Hope those recruiting trophies shine brightly, right next to the September/October Heismans Denard racked up.

actually,
>how do you feel about urban listing michigan (and ND) in the
>same group of his dream jobs? damn that's got to burn. don't
>think hoke ever had eyes to coach OSU.

Someone who grew up in the midwest considers those 3 jobs the best in CFB? What a surprise! (edit, and FWIW Urban turned down Notre Dame to go to Florida)

And yes, I'm absolutely devastated that great Brady Hoke never wanted to coach Ohio State. Just crushed.

If this is what it takes to console yourself on botching your last two coaching hires, have at it.

obviously nothing is in writing yet..but the rumblings are that Jon Tenuta will be linebackers coach (if Vrabel isnt retained), Stan Drayton stays on as the WR coach, unsure about RBS, LSU's offensive coordinator Studrawa , and Fickell stays on as asst HC and DC..the rest is up in the air.

Sorry cgonz, the Ravens D has been stellar for quite some time now, before Mattison and after..

He's done a good job with the Michigan defense this year though.

the fanbase that was spouting off about how OSU and the rest of the Big 10 were about to be steamrolled by Dick Rod and BARWIS.

meanwhile, they wind up grabbing their next coach off the scrap heap...a guy who's never won a damn thing in his life other than getting a highly touted ohio lineman to jump ship in the face of a media shitstorm.

but yeah, OSU grabbing the top college coach/recruiter in the game is of no concern to them. HA!

In terms of the this 'rivalry', it's only going to get uglier on their end of things.

that somehow the rest of the big 10 isnt 'scared' of urban meyer cause he isnt bringing along dan mullen and mattison with him.

keep in mind we spent a decade kicking michigan and the big 10's ass with jim bollman(!) running our offense.

i have faith that meyer will assemble a very competent staff.

"Oh no. No, not at all. Not at all. The struggles this season … you can fix struggles," Meyer said. "If it was a different time in my family's lives, where they weren't involved in sports, involved in all of the things that a dad should be at, then it might be different. But I want to make clear, that's it. That's the reason. Last year's (health problem) was a wakeup call."

“I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and I am a fierce competitor to my core. At this time in my life, however, I appreciate the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field. The decision to step down was a difficult one.

I relish the opportunity to cheer for my three terrific kids as they compete in their own respective sports. I know how fortunate I am to be in a position to make this choice and to have a family that is as loving and supportive as my amazing wife and children have always been

and as if michigan fans wouldnt have been off their ass happy if harbaugh (an unquestionably enormous asshole) came back home.

OSU had a 'nice guy' coaching their squad and everyone still irrationally hated his ass just the same.

if youre a winning coach at a top school there's automatically going to be a very large faction of people that dislike you. im really ok with that. and after all that's gone down, ill be really ok with putting it on teams as instead of doing it the 'Gentleman Jim' way and taking a knee at the 5 yard line.

yall are preemptively conjuring up shit that you can whine about while we're manhandling your squad on the field for the 2nd consecutive decade.

of course, we're all just absolutely crushed that you and your fanbase doesn't approve of the hire...but then again, the okp michigan fanbase's record for evaluating coaches and predicting future success speaks for itself. after tatgate, who was it on here that said that nobody would ever want to coach at OSU ever again? HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA.

we'll keep celebrating, thanks.

46. "Eleven Warriors take"
In response to Reply # 0
Fri Nov-18-11 03:31 PM by guru0509

So, last night's tweet (https://twitter.com/#!/elevenwarriors/status/137373410241159169) generated a bit of chatter, eh?

Responses to that tweet break down between outright jubilation (70%), proper skepticism (25%) and efforts to discredit us by some in more traditional media (5%).

While we can't blame the skeptics, it's worth pointing out our track record. We hear a ton of things, but only come forward with things we're virtually certain about.

Like this. https://twitter.com/#!/elevenwarriors/status/45206081198235648

Or this
https://twitter.com/#!/elevenwarriors/status/75309332706754560

We were flamed for breaking both of those, but you know how they turned out.

Before we dive into what we do know, it's important to point out what we're not saying:

Urban Meyer was not in Columbus yesterday or anytime in the last couple of weeks.

There is no contract in place between Urban Meyer and Ohio State. Nothing signed, whatsoever.

Now, here's what we do know based off of multiple sources that have a proven track record with delivering timely information to us:

There has long been mutual interest between Ohio State and Urban Meyer.

Urban has agreed in principle to take the position next year. Numbers have been exchanged and agreed upon via back-channel talks.
Ohio State and Meyer are waiting for the NCAA to deliver their verdict, after which time, the announcement of Meyer as the new head coach will take place.

Both parties are on the same page with regards to what they expect to hear from the NCAA. Both parties believe the NCAA's punishment will not be an obstacle to Meyer taking the job.

While early December has been floated, the university is hoping to hear back from the NCAA later this month.

LSU offensive coordinator Greg Studrawa, a Fostoria native who coached with Meyer at Bowling Green, is very much in play to become a member of Meyer's staff at Ohio State.

That's what we know at this time. We'll continue to deliver news that we're confident in as it comes our way. We have a five year history of being conservative with what we break and we're proud of not rushing to break news just to break it.

all we need to do now is fire Gene Smith's dumb ass.

Unless my memory is wayyy off, I remember a lot of folks outside of Floriday disliking Urban. It's amazing how people change so quick...

And I'm not saying this to bash Ohio State fans because I've observed this same behavior in PSU fans as well. I can't tell you how many PSU fans I've talked to that think Urban Meyer would be our savior. But a year ago, those same people would be talking about how slimey of a person he is. Interesting...

For the record, I think he's a great hire for OSU. Has roots there and will have an awesome talent pool to work with. If he can continue to lock up all Ohio players and bring in guys from western PA and the south, it's a wrap. I think his pedigree alone will be enough to win over a TON of recruits. Kids want to play for and win a National title. He can promise that whereas other coaches in the Big 10 .....yeah. Good for OSU, shitty situation for the rest of us...

and im not sure if you're referring to okp or real life but the only person on here that took a hard line stance on meyer was guru.

most OSU fans had long considered meyer to be an eventual replacement for tressel sometime around 2015 or so or whenever he stepped down.

it's obviously a great hire, but I can't get terrified by it. due to an ex student/now friend I followed Urban quite closely. The dude was mailing it in the last two seasons. Either that, or Dan Mullens was really that important. Either way, I don't think it's a slam dunk that he continues the dominance of the Big Ten, let alone elevates the Buckeye program. If he doesn't have the hunger back, he won't, and I don't know if a year off is sufficient to get that back.

All of that said, I would have been thrilled if he had been Penn State's coach, and maybe the reason I can't get too upset about him going to Ohio State is because everything with my own program is so horrible that I can't really get that upset about anything else.

“The concerns are still there,” Meyer told The Sun. “No. 1 — my health. No. 2 — my family. No. 3 — the state of college football. I've done some research into the second one. I've found that it is possible to have balance between your job and your family, that there are coaches out there who are doing it."

110. "Is Meyer really going to TOSU while Gators struggle to beat Furman?"
In response to Reply # 0

crushin feelings

GAINESVILLE — Thousands of empty seats in a stadium that was once perennially packed.

No superstar players on a field that was once overrun with NFL scouts.

And the once-mighty Florida Gators struggling in a 54-32 victory over lower-division Furman just for the right to become bowl eligible.

Meanwhile, reports run rampant that former UF coach Urban Meyer has already interviewed for the job at Arizona and is set to take the job at Ohio State. Meyer said on ESPN Saturday that he has not been offered or accepted any job.

Hopefully he is telling the truth, because if he isn't Gators fans and players should feel betrayed by Meyer, who clearly left a program bereft of talent, depth and discipline so he could go spend more time with his ESPN family.

When reports started circulating Friday night that Meyer had already taken the Ohio State job, one of his former UF players — Marcus Gilbert — wasn't shocked.

"I don't know why anybody is surprised about Urban taking the job at THE OSU," tweeted Gilbert, an offensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers. "Me personally, I would've been a man and not have made up a lie."

Say it ain't so, Urban. Tell us all of these newspaper and Internet reports are false. And don't just come out with some milquetoast statement about how you haven't been offered a job; come out and say that no way, no how are you going to take another job even if it is offered.

Florida fans would have a right to call him Urban "Liar" if indeed he accepts a new job not even a year after he left his old one. Just the fact that he interviewed for the Arizona job, according to The New York Times, is a slap in the face to the Gators. Why is Meyer reportedly interviewing for other jobs only months after leaving one of the best jobs in America?

"With his deteriorating health and his family being as important as it is to him, I wouldn't think he would ," new Gators coach Will Muschamp said when asked if he would be surprised if Meyer returned to coaching this quickly.

Unfortunately for Muschamp, he is the one who has to deal with the Urban decay that Meyer left behind. He is the one who had to talk about what a "big win" it was for Florida to beat Furman. He is the one whose depth-depleted roster is 70 percent freshmen and sophomores.

The explanation Meyer gave for leaving UF was because of family and health issues. If he takes the Ohio State job now, those reasons will seem like empty excuses. And Gators fans will have a right to believe Captain Meyer bailed from a sinking ship and left Muschamp to scoop out the waves of incoming water, patch the massive leaks and steer the listing Gators gondola to safety.

We would be left to wonder if Meyer left Florida because of his program's health instead of his own. Would he have left if the Gators had lost one game last year instead of five? Would he have left if the Gators had a championship team coming back this season instead of a bowl-eligible one?

Meyer obviously deserves tons of credit for winning two national titles, but there's no denying he left scorched earth in his wake. Here's all you need to know about UF's talent level: There was one NFL scout in the press box on Saturday, and he was there to scout a Furman player. That's right: NFL scouts are now coming to Gators home games to scout the other team.

History tells us Nero fiddled while the Roman Empire was crumbling.

Now we're hearing Meyer is interviewing while Gator Nation is stumbling.

Say it ain't so, Urban.

In response to Reply # 124

who are the victims in meyer's path of destruction? his college aged daughters? really? im sure they wont be benefiting from urban's 35 million dollar contract.

we need to feel bad for florida? the guy brought them 2 chips in 6 seasons and for whatever reason decided he wanted to take a year off and move on. it's not his right to do so? and it's our right to not only know the real motivations behind his leaving but to also approve of them?

let's recognize this for what it really is. OSU got caught with free tats and the rest of cfb wanted us to burn in hell for eternity. they wanted us off the map. even further off the map than wherever PSU may end up. OSU paid dearly for its transgressions but now the storm has cleared and they're coming out of it even stronger than they were before. and mutherfuckers are butt hurt about it.

who would have been the 'right hire' as far as every non-osu fan was concerned? who would have been the moral hire? bo pellini? dantonio? prince of morality bielema? the right hire as far as the haters are concerned would be the one that kept OSU toiling in mediocrity...or better yet, the hire that could cripple the program a la dick rod.

there's no 'hypocrisy' with this hire given that meyer has a spotless ncaa record. in the face of sanctions SC went out and hired the shadiest dude possible but nobody gave a fuck cause nobody respects kiffin as a winning coach nor do they respect his ability to maintain SC as a powerhouse.

at the end of the day nobody gives a shit about family or morals so lets cut the BS. I swear folks would be happier if OSU poached PSU's staff than if we hired meyer.

the...last second drive right down your defense's throat for the game winning TD. It was a down year, and you couldnt capitalize. I know its frustrating you couldn't get to the big dance, but that's the breaks.

and what stance are you really so upset about?

Jim Tressel was a nice guy* and we got irrational hate across the board.

Now that we have a cut throat win at all cost guy (for however long), people are gonna hate regardless.

It's time we embraced the bad guy image. Fuck it. Let's go.

*never ran up scores, never resorted to bad mouthing other schools in recruiting (for better or worse), the number of academic all americans, the high apr scores, never promised shit to recruits..it was his one major transgression got him fired..(and rightly so)

Look, I realize that the "gonna take time off to spend time with my family" thing was bullshit as soon as he accepted that job at ESPN and Todd McShay was camping out at his house on weekdays going over film, its whatever.

I'm not gonna hate on him for taking the tOSU job if/*when* he does, thats his right and its not like he's some FL legacy that spurned us for the NFL and came back to a team within our own division like Spurrier did. The man won us 2 titles, I'll love him forever for 2006 and 2008.

I think he's gonna do great at tOSU, Braxton Miller is gonna end up putting up ridic stats prob starting next year. But remember this guru0509, Ohio State might dominate the Big 10 the next few years, but the SEC still owns that ass in title games!

Agreed on the rest.

and smh @ the collective SEC pride..I guess when your team is 6-5 and looking to stay afloat, SEC pride is the life raft.

i dont necessarily agree with this.

poaching another team's active coach is not an easy task. which is why i thought stoops was a pipe dream and why i even think getting pellini would have been no small feat.

i have no factual basis to this opinion but i really think meyer was thinking about OSU as a '5 years down the line type thing'. freak shit happened with JT and the opportunity fell in his lap and it was just too hard to turn down.

if we got 6 years and 2 chips with meyer id be forever grateful.

hell, ill take 1 chip in 5 years. i don't see meyer staying at OSU forever. if you look at the history of top coaches, most of them dont last any longer than 10 years. it's rare to find a guy like tressel who is a top coach but has no aspirations to coach elsewhere or to move on to bigger and better or just different things.

im hoping to get 5-7 years from meyer and then he can pass the torch to someone ready to take on the position (fickell perhaps) under smoother circumstances.

so i'm pretty conflicted on this hire. it's like the program is saying, we tried to make good with the vest, slapped ourselves on the wrist, now fuck it we'll go full heel.

i'll still enjoy watching the buckeyes play but i'll have a hard time appreciating this mf and giving the benefit of the doubt that gum chewer got due to the interim title.

This wasn't even a Gene Smith decision. This entire hire is all on the board of trustees, from day 1.

At the end of the day, did TOSU go out and hire the best possible candidate for the job? Absolutely.

It's gonna feel weird going from Jim Tressel to Urban Meyer but the second the second he starts reeling in 5* players, and we start dropping the hammer on teams instead of playing not to lose, EVERYONE will come around.

I love Jim Tressel (my freshman year was year 1 of the Vest's reign) and I wouldn't trade the last 10 years for anything, but change gon' come, oh yes it will. (c)

perhaps its a bit disrespectful to steal the thunder of fickell, a coaching staff that's put in work for over a decade and are now about to be shown the door...and a group of players playing in their most important game of the season? this might be the last game in a buckeye uniform for the seniors as im hearing we may turn down a bowl bid.

or maybe its because meyer hasnt actually signed a contract yet?

im sure meyer and osu has their reasons...and i dont see why any of us are owed any explanation for those reasons

try and act a bit less self-entitled. k.thx.

Even if it's some crap Myspace bowl, I'd hope they take it. This team needs that extra 6 to 7 weeks of practice.

Either ways, he traded in his Lexus for a Maserati...(not to mention he's bringing some people who are currently on the Gator's staff as well)

I know it stings, but Florida was just a stepping stone for him and the pursuit of his dream job (for a lot of other coaches, UF would be the final stop.)

two? probably. three? that's where i get a little hesitant. if the over unders are 2.5 b1g ten titles and .5 national championships, i take the under both times

it should worry you that no florida fan is that upset by this. they know the situation with meyer. if they're not upset about a guy who won two titles for them coming back after a year off, what does that tell you? i have a very close friend who's a gator, so i've followed that program a lot the last three years. this is not a slam dunk, dude. he's not going to be as dominant in conference as tressel was.

this isn't even penn state snark talking, because, again, we're so far away from worrying about what anyone else is doing. we gotta get our house right, so i'm not thinking b1g ten titles or national contention until at least 2013. as a more or less neutral observer, i will say, great hire, going to win at ohio state, but probably not as much as you expect or are used to.

and, of course, there's a chance he retires after two seasons.

Esp on the scout boards and other various blogs. I think they just want to vent about their season and instead of placing blame on their coaches, Meyer is an "escape goat" (c) another Gator legend.

Because..he doesnt have his former assistants? That shit is so overblown. Good coaches stem good coaching trees. You lose coordinators. Shit happens. The good coaches go out and find more. I'm not worried about the coaching staff part of it at all.

7 years is perfect for him.

>it should worry you that no florida fan is that upset by this.
> they know the situation with meyer.

i cant say that im all that dialed in to what florida fans are feeling but ive come across a lot of FL editorial stuff and that was bitter as fuck. like, really, really bitter.

are UF fans happier with muschamp/weis?

I've heard a lot of stuff about meyer leaving the cupboard bare...except if you look at the recruiting rankings, all I see are monster classes. perhaps first time HC muschamp just couldn't hold it down?

>he's not going
>to be as dominant in conference as tressel was.

you can share your reasons as to why you feel that why. as far as why I'm optimistic:

-the big 10 is actually weaker now compared to ten years ago. PSU taking themselves out of the picture certainly contributes to this.

-national recruiting will be upgraded. you've followed recruiting and know of Tressel's signing day woes. meyer is a recruiting beast.

-coaching staff in general will be MASSIVELY upgraded. OSU was running a mom and pop show, especially as far as the offense goes. look at what our offense did this year without tressel. look at that 2 minute drill we ran at the end of the michigan game. check the credentials of nick siciliano...the qb coach who we entrusted with pryor's career. do you think bollman's agent is flooded with NFL offers today now that he's on the market? there's a reason nobody ever poaches our offensive staff.

>and, of course, there's a chance he retires after two
>seasons.

it's a risk you take. if he leaves, it won't be for another college gig. it's pretty obvious by now that OSU is the job he covets.

he's currently not coaching so you don't have to wait for him to coach a bowl game before the announcement, and he can get right on recruiting. No problems with news getting out early and that messing up the "process" like we had to. He also already has his QB right there who will work great in his system so you don't have to go through a Sheridan/Threet type of transition year. He's definitely done the research.

Hopefully Hoke and Meyer make this a balanced rivalry. It would be fun to play OSU in the B1G Championship Game the week after The Game year after year...

our alternative was pellini or dantonio hitting the recruiting trail in mid january. ugh.

>Hopefully Hoke and Meyer make this a balanced rivalry.

I think it's not just necessarily Hoke and Meyer but with the entire coaching staff in general...you can see that both schools are committed to winning. Michigan broke the bank for Hoke's assistants and OSU will be doing the same for Meyer. Big 10 schools have always been notoriously cheap with paying their assistants and nowadays that just isnt gonna get it done.

It'll be weird the first time it happens. Just think about the possible scenarios - there's gonna be years where the divisions aren't decided until The Game, so you'll have to win it for the honor of playing a rematch the next week. The neutral field thing is gonna be insane - I'm just imagining what the environment would be like in a championship game with the fans split half and half. The thing that will suck would be the fact that in an evenly matched rivalry it's really hard to beat the same team twice, in back to back weeks. If there's a split, you're gonna have teams copping pleas on both sides - the winner if The Game is gonna say that the regular season game is the one that matters, and the winner of the chip is gonna say look at the rings.

Whatever happens, if both teams are competitive it'll be fun.

http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-football/2011/11/28/2591715/urban-meyer-ohio-state-coach

So, Ohio State, you've gone and gotten yourself a factory refurbished URBAN MEYER 2.0 for the holidays. What can you expect from your new coach?

Follow @sbnation on Twitter, and Like SBNation.com on Facebook.

Nov 28, 2011 - Congratulations, . You have purchased an URBAN MEYER 2.0, the latest and greatest model of the URBAN MEYER line. This is an informative guide to help you best utilize your URBAN MEYER 2.0. Please use this pamphlet to familiarize yourself with its features and quirks so that you and your family can fully enjoy all the possibilities this URBAN MEYER 2.0 can bring you.

FEATURES.

The URBAN MEYER 2.0 boasts top-of-the-line features making it one of the most desirable and envied coaching commodities in college football. These include:

OLD SCHOOL FRAMEWORK WITH NEW SCHOOL STYLING. Your URBAN MEYER 2.0 may have introduced his own variation of the spread option to college football and started the nationwide craze that all DBs and grumbling I-form cromags hate, but at root Meyer is a traditionalist two steps evolved from the single-wing offense. His offenses are always run-first, his defenses play aggressive but fundamentally sound football, and his special teams are airtight margin-makers. (Usually coached by Meyer himself, it should be noted.) Your URBAN MEYER 2.0 will run on first down much of the time, block punts, and play field position ball in order to maximize every possible advantage on the field. Woody Hayes wouldn't like all the plastic filigree on the dashboard, but the sturdy shocks and humming V-8 engine do not displease the man, either.
AN EYE FOR SPEED. Contrary to popular belief, there are fast people on the Ohio State roster, but your URBAN MEYER 2.0 will do nothing to hurt that. The emphasis on speed at every position is a decided feature of your new URBAN MEYER 2.0, as is the cliched-but-true "emphasis on getting the ball to players in space." If someone can burn, they will get the chance to immolate a defense in Meyer's attack.
A PROVEN TRACK RECORD OF SUCCESS EVERYWHERE YOUR URBAN MEYER HAS BEEN. The two BCS titles at Florida (including one won over the smoking carcass of an undefeated Ohio State team) are the obvious gets here, but don't forget that Meyer's ascent to the top of the coaching ranks came with stints at Bowling Green and Utah, two inconspicuous spots on the college football map. He'll worth with what's there and build on that no matter where he is, and do so without ruffling the feathers of the NCAA. This might be especially relevant in the case of Ohio State.
RESTED, READY, AND GENUFLECTING TO THE PROPER GODS. Ten months out of coaching should have URBAN MEYER 2.0 ready to coach at a place where he began his career as a mustachioed grad assistant in thrall to his childhood hero's throne. Yes, that is an oil painting of Ohio State legend Woody Hayes in his house. Yes, that is a birth certificate reading "Ashtabula, Ohio." Yes, that grad degree does read "Ohio State."
"FEATURES"

BUGS IN THE URBAN MEYER 2.0 SHOULD BE REPORTED TO TECHNICAL SUPPORT. Oh, and there are some bugs. After five years in the SEC, Meyer entered the 2009 SEC Championship Game at least 20 pounds underweight and visibly showing the strain of a run at consecutive SEC and national titles. A 32-13 loss to Alabama did not help, and shortly before the Gators' Sugar Bowl matchup Meyer promptly retired, then unretired due to some kind of nebulously defined health problem. Meyer credited a turbocharged case of acid reflux and burnout, and message boards suggested he traveled to a subterranean clinic in Brazil to have his heart replaced by a nuclear Iron Man model. Whatever it was, it left Meyer a shadow of himself for the 2010 season, a mediocre eight-win campaign marred by pitiful offensive production and questions surrounding Meyer's capabilities in delegating power to assistants. It has been just 10 months since Meyer left for the second time at Florida, and questions about his health and commitment are perfectly legitimate since no one knows whether Meyer is up to the rigors of being a head coach again. (That group likely includes Meyer himself.)
THE URBAN MEYER 2.0 MAY NOT BE COMPATIBLE WITH OTHER DEVICES. One issue leading to Meyer's breakdown: the inability to delegate. Like most coaches, URBAN MEYER 2.0 is an exacting control freak, and one who often makes up the gap between players' performance and assistant coaches' instruction with his own input. This is the kind way of putting this. The unkind way is to say that Meyer sometimes takes over the job himself, as he did with special teams at Florida (and as he periodically did with the offense, too). Delegation will be key to avoiding any relapses of burnout at Ohio State. The last time he did this, Florida relapsed into a Zookish torpor and barely beat Penn State in the Outback Bowl to reach eight wins.
THE URBAN MEYER WILL NEED OTHER DEVICES. Meyer also got great mileage from his staff of assistants who followed him along the way. This would not be a problem if they were coming to Ohio State, but the nagging side effect of success is losing those assistants to head coaching jobs. Former Florida offensive coordinator Dan Mullen is now head man at Mississippi State. Former Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong may win the Big East at Louisville. Even his least lauded assistants have head coaching jobs. Finding the talent to delegate to will be an issue, and that's not even touching the issue of what to do with capable defensive coordinator and interim Ohio State coach Luke Fickell.
THE URBAN MEYER 2.0 MAY NOT PROPERLY DISPLAY ERROR MESSAGES. Or any other messages, for that matter. Meyer is the coach who allegedly told Jevan Snead he was recruiting Tim Tebow as a linebacker. Meyer also once told a recruit he had a dream God himself told Meyer the recruit was going to play at Florida. Meyer was the one who waffled on his retirement, and Meyer was largely responsible for the vague understanding of whatever led up to that retirement. You may be getting a lot of things with Meyer, but someone who cares what the media or recruits hear in the way of truth is not one of them. What Tressel didn't say in five hundred words, Meyer will simply not say in five. (Oh, and he might threaten to kick the ass of one of your reporters. Be prepared.)
We hope this helps you to understand the terms and conditions under which you have purchased your new URBAN MEYER 2.0. Enjoy this outstanding product and all the joy it can bring you.

ADDENDUM: There is no warranty on the URBAN MEYER 2.0. Please proceed accordingly.

Meyer’s credibility takes another hit
Pat Forde

The “Urban myth” line has been worn to a nub with Urban Meyer, but it’s never been more fitting than now.

Here’s the mythology Meyer has tried to sell us: that a certifiable coaching freak could make a clean break from football for a well-rounded, healthy lifestyle and more time with the kids.

He tried it in 2009 with a sudden and stunning retirement announcement. Florida released a statement that included this sentence from Meyer: “I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family.”

The re-evaluation took one day. His urgent health issues disappeared so fast, the joke was that his messianic quarterback, Tim Tebow, cured him. It was one of the shortest retirements in sports history.

Then he tried it in 2010, abruptly retiring again, with this as part of his statement: “At this time in my life … I appreciate the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field.”

The focus on family and life away from the field began to blur after less than a year. Because he’s coming back – again. Expect the official announcement at Ohio State to happen anytime.

This isn’t the least bit surprising, though it might have jolted those who most want to believe him.

Two Florida sources told me they expected him to stay out of coaching for a long time – “three or four years” one said – in a sincere effort to regain some balance in his life. And as the mess that cost Jim Tressel his job got worse last spring and speculation about Meyer intensified, one of his daughters sent out a strident Tweet saying, “HE IS NOT repeat NOT, GOING TO OHIO STATE.”

Except now he is, not even waiting long enough to hear what the NCAA sanctions will be on the program he’s inheriting. The guy who wanted to slow his life down has gone full-speed ahead back into the job.

Buckeyes fans are in a justifiable tizzy over landing a superstar coach with two national titles. But Meyer’s phony retirements have damaged his credibility along the way to his new multimillion-dollar gig.

When Meyer stepped down last December, I caught a lot of heat from Florida fans for writing the following:

“So you’re Urban Meyer. … And maybe you really are filled with middle-aged regret about living an unbalanced life that leaves too little time for your wife and kids. So you do this. You listen to the family this time around. You walk away from one of the two best jobs in your profession (Texas is the other) at somewhere near the peak of your career. … You’re Dick Vermeil of the college game, and the pursuit of glory no longer justifies the grind of getting there.

“If those things are true, and Meyer is ready to enter a rewarding new phase of life as a paternal bleacher creature, watching his three kids play sports, so be it. Wish him godspeed and good health. …

“But if Meyer suddenly shows up in Denver to coach Tebow, he’s a con man of the highest order. If he changes his mind and comes back to Florida before it hires someone else, he’s a diva even Favre would disdain. If he takes another job a year from now, his family will know once and for all where it ranks in his personal hierarchy of needs.

“Guess we’ll wait and see who the real Urban Meyer is.”

We didn’t have to wait long. And I suspect that some of the Florida fans who were mad at me last year for not buying the company line are mad at their former hero now.

The real Urban Meyer is a guy who forfeited believability a few conflicting stories ago. He was sick, then he was healthy, then he was sick again … and now apparently he’s fine just in time to take a Cadillac job in his home state at a school he grew up revering.

What wonderful timing.

What really made Meyer sick at Florida? I have some guesses.

Watching his top-ranked, undefeated team get crushed by Alabama in the 2009 SEC title game made him sick. Losing five games the next year and enduring the first disappointing season of his career made him sick. Looking at recruiting classes that didn’t stack up on the field the way they stacked up on paper, especially five-star quarterbacks and receivers, made him sick.

Like many other great coaches, losing kills Urban Meyer. The defeats are far more painful than the victories are enjoyable – which proves to be a powerful motivator to do everything possible to avoid defeat. When the bottom fell out at Florida after Tebow and coordinators Charlie Strong and Dan Mullen left, the thought of selling a spoiled fan base on a protracted rebuilding process might have been enough to make a man ill.

So he bailed on Gator Nation at the first sign of professional struggle.

From there he went to ESPN, where TV work also is not ideal for family life. At Florida, there were six or seven home games every fall; in TV, there are none. I was on a flight with Meyer one Saturday this autumn, and he was schlepping his carry-on luggage (complete with Gators logo) through the Atlanta airport just like the rest of us.

Being king of a college town is better, right?

There is every reason to believe Meyer will be king in Columbus. It’s harder to win a national title there than at Florida, but easier to win your league. And the one thing Ohio State must do to compete with the SEC kingpins – sign some Southern speed and athleticism – should be easier now that they’re coached by a guy whose name still resonates with recruits in Florida.

Urban Meyer will win big, all right. But his credibility is only an Urban myth.

It would be a travesty, it would be ridiculous to all of a sudden come back and get the feeling back, get the health back, feel good again and then all of a sudden go throw some other colors on my shirt and go coach. I don't want to do that. I have too much love for this University and these players and for what we've built." -Urban Meyer.

he won 2 titles at UF primarily with someone else's players. his recruits are cycling through the program now and we can all see the result. he recruited WAC players to play SEC football.

that'll work fine for Big-10 titles that no one outside Colombus or Ann Arbor care about, but OSU's in for a whole string of '06 flashbacks if they make it to the national championship game.

you don't recruit the south, you don't win. period. and Urbs just made it a whole lot harder on himself to get quality players out of that region. add in the fact that he's still addicted to undersized speedsters, he's facing looming sanctions, and his recurring "health problems", and it's a perfect recipe for 4-5 years of disappointment.

it'll be fun to watch.

period. The guy has 2 national titles. That is one hell of an accomplishment. Recruiting is essential to building a dominant team, but it's not the end all be all barometer for winning titles. If that was the case than the college football championship history would look a LOT different. Bottom line is that Urban can flat-out coach. I might not necessarily care for him or respect him that much, but I can at least admit that he's one heck of a coach. Don't let your bitterness cloud your judgement.

In response to Reply # 252

and it's not just pulling in a handful of stars every year.

Bama and LSU are so dominant because they fill needs. they don't waste scholarships on 5-star players that don't even fit their system (why the FUCK did Urban Meyer give a scholarship to John Brantley? that should be a HUGE red flag to everyone regarding his recruiting philosophy).

Urban is a good coach. and players love him. but he'll just never be able to build a program that churns out championship-level teams. especially if he sticks with his obsession over undersized players.

If he wins a title with these slow plodding Ohio boys (even though Urban recruited some of them) then he's proven he can win with players built for a different offense. If he doesn't then that buys him time to assemble a team to his liking.

>he won 2 titles at UF primarily with someone else's players.
>his recruits are cycling through the program now and we can
>all see the result. he recruited WAC players to play SEC
>football.

or maybe because you have no upperclassmen, and Charlie Weis as your OC. Meyer left you with top 5 recruiting classes (players that were recruited by EVERYBODY). Stop crying.

>that'll work fine for Big-10 titles that no one outside
>Colombus or Ann Arbor care about, but OSU's in for a whole
>string of '06 flashbacks if they make it to the national
>championship game.

Cool.

>you don't recruit the south, you don't win. period. and Urbs
>just made it a whole lot harder on himself to get quality
>players out of that region.

He'll recruit the south just fine. I don't see how going to a school with more money, a larger fan base, richer tradition, a historic stadium, and great facilities is making it harder on himself.

anyone wanna look up where etienne sabino and ryan shazier are from and their offer sheet?

meyer left them with MONSTER recruiting classes. funny to me that no blame is being put on a first time head coach that appears to be in over his head.

get a handful of 5-star recruits and your set, right? depth isn't a concern as long as you've got star power. you'll see the effects of this in a few years.

i can't blame you for thinking this, because most Gator fans thought the same thing. but it's funny that your new coach had just as shitty a year last season with the same MONSTER recruiting class...

yeah, you missed the point entirely and are on some other shit. shazier is a 3 and done to the nfl star, btw. sabino hasnt panned out for whatever reason but still has 1 more year for the light to go on.

our new 'head coach' that was previously coaching the linebackers? or our monster class that was missing 4 huge stars on the offense and its senior qb? not exactly a fair season to use as a litmus test for this graduating class who prior to this clusterfuck of a season got us a rose bowl win and a sugar bowl win.

but that was a bunch of young kids learning his spread ..if he was there this year they woud have done better, but instead Muschamp hires a pro style coordinator instead of trying to adapt with the personnel they have.

rumor is you got kids on the UF roster right today that are looking to transfer to OSU to play for Meyer but are being blocked by muschamp.

i didn't think he'd leave for OSU because i didn't understand how much of a sleezebag he was. i was dead wrong on that one.

the other shit you said is just exaggeration.

the only thing that really matters is that OSU will never get the amount of southern athletes they need to compete with programs like Bama and LSU. never. you would think the elite teams of each conference would be narrowing the gap between themselves and the SEC's top tier, but the gulf is only getting wider.

in all seriousness, Urban probably will win a gang of Big-10 championships. and OSU's schedule is always a joke, so you'll probably make a few BCS bowls, too. you just won't win any national titles. and, no snark, that's probably good enough for most OSU fans.

but i'm not gonna lie - seeing y'all get gang raped in the national title games will be awesome.

>one.

i love how the resident OSU trolls are now falling back on the 'meyer is a shithead' angle. as if that hadn't been known forever.

the argument was always about OSU being an inferior program, about how nobody would ever want to coach or play in Columbus, they don't own any winter coats, blah blah blah. The usual SEC center of the football world dumbfuckery.

so instead of simply taking the L and conceding that you didn't know what you were talking about...you're gonna try and save face by heaping even more brainwashed down south logic onto the fire.

comparing the success of UF and OSU over the next decade will be real funny. but for real i dont even hate on UF like that. its a great program. UF fans seem farrrrr more concerned with what OSU is doing than the other way around.

>the other shit you said is just exaggeration.

lol. like we havent had a million debates on here about florida kids willing to come play for OSU?

This is actually an argument in favor of government-run forced sterilization programs.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Betrayed-Gator-mom-wants-to-change-little-Spurri;_ylt=As.so7JTJ_SEBHqqulXuJQDjvbYF?urn=ncaaf-wp11187

When Urban Meyer decided to take the Ohio State job less than a year after retiring from Florida, many Gator fans were upset with their former coach. But few more so than Jen Wiley, who named her son after Urban because of her and her husband's allegiance to Florida.

Wiley's son, now 4 years old, is actually named Spurrier Urban Wiley, after Florida's two national championship winning coaches — Steve Spurrier and Meyer - but after Meyer's move to the Big Ten, Wiley wants to change her son's middle name.

"My husband and I got married in 1996, when Spurrier won the championships," she said, "and then we conceived in 2006 when Urban Meyer won the championship."

It was a seemingly perfect fit for these Florida fanatics, until now. So mom's ready for a change.

"I want to change his middle name," she said.

Wiley's husband isn't on board with the change, and she said she won't officially change her son's name unless her husband agrees.

If he does, she's thinking Tim after Tim Tebow, the great Gator quarterback who is becoming a star in the NFL.

This is very bitter biscuits on Wiley's part. Raise your hand if you thought Meyer was going to stay retired. Anyone? Anyone? Coaches lie, they change their minds, they switch jobs. The best thing fans can do it not get too emotional and name their kids after them.

If you want to pay homage to your favorite team, name your kids after players. That's usually a safe bet — unless, of course, you named your son Terrelle, Pryor, Cliff or Harris.

Team director of player personnel - Mark Pantoni
Pantoni has worked at the University of Florida for the past five years, and he has had direct responsibilities as a recruiting program coordinator for the past two seasons, including serving as the director of football administration from March of this year through the end of the regular season.

SPEEEEEED,Strength and Conditioning Coach - Mickey Marotti
Marotti, the director of strength and conditioning, came to Florida in 2005 when Meyer was hired and has known him for at least 20 years. The two were graduate assistants at Ohio State in the late 1980s, and Meyer and Marotti coached together at Notre Dame in the late 1990s.

“Tom Herman has one of the bright young minds in college football,” Meyer said in a statement released by Ohio State. “His philosophies are very similar to those of my own. I spoke to numerous colleagues about Tom and all had great things to say about him. I enjoyed our time together during the interview process and I am excited to have him on the staff.”

DEFENSE- Luke Fickell/Everett Withers

Everett Withers was named Carolina's interim head coach on July 28, 2011. Withers is in his 24th season as a coach and has experience at both the professional and college level. He has served as Carolina's defensive coordinator and secondary coach the last three seasons.

especially with the talent you guys always get.

sucks that he got thrown into the fire here, but his defenses were always on point, and usually the lone bright spot.

monstrous d-lines
hungry, active LBs that fucked shit up
solid safeties

the one thing we lacked was shut down corners and those are rare. since it seems like tOSU always has elite corners, that shouldnt be a problem.

Withers Named Co-Def. Coord./Asst. Head Coach
Defense taking shape; Withers, Fickell, Johnson and Vrabel all on board

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has added another member to his coaching staff today with his announcement that 24-year coaching veteran everett withers would be the buckeyes’ co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. Withers is currently the interim head coach at the University of North Carolina.

“Everett is extremely well respected across the country,” Meyer said. “I’ve known about him for a number of years and followed his progress as a college and NFL assistant coach. He will be a great fit for this staff and I think he and Luke are going to work well together as the co-coordinators of our defense.”

Withers has been a collegiate coach for 17 years and has also worked seven seasons in the National Football League: six years (2001-06) as defensive backs coach with the Tennessee Titans under Jeff Fisher, and a year (1994) as a defensive quality control coach for the New Orleans Saints.

Finishing up his fourth year at North Carolina, Withers was promoted to interim head coach at the school this past July and led the Tar Heels to a 7-5 record and to a berth in the Dec. 26 Independence Bowl against Missouri. He will coach the Tar Heels in the bowl game.

“I am excited, and I couldn’t be more excited to be on coach Urban Meyer’s staff at The Ohio State University,” Withers said. “Ohio State is obviously one of the storied programs in college athletics. Having an opportunity to work at that university, and as part of Coach Meyer’s staff, is something that you just can’t pass up.”

Withers’ collegiate coaching resume includes nine years as a defensive coordinator with a vast majority of his time – 15 seasons – spent coaching the defensive backfield. His Tar Heel defenses were top notch.

§ His first unit – 2008 – ranked eighth in the country with 20 interceptions, a number that was just one off the UNC single season record.

§ His 2009 defense was among the nation’s elite, ranking sixth in total defense, 10th against the run, 13th in scoring and 14th in pass defense.

§ His 2010 unit ranked fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 30th nationally. Five players off that unit were taken in the NFL draft, including first-round pick Robert Quinn.

§ And this past year the Tar Heels ranked 14th against the run.
Additionally, Withers’ UNC defenses have picked off 71 passes in the past four years.

Withers spent one year as defensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota prior to his North Carolina position.

He also has been an assistant coach at

University of Texas (1998-2000; defensive backs),

Louisville (1995-97; defensive coordinator/assistant head coach/defensive backs)

Southern Mississippi (1992-93; defensive backs/assistant special teams),

Tulane (1991; outside linebackers)

Austin Peay (1988-90; defensive coordinator/defensive backs; tight ends/special teams).

A native of Charlotte, N.C., Withers attended Appalachian State University and was a four-year letter-winner as a defensive back. He served as team captain in 1984.
Withers and his wife, Kara, have a daughter, Tia, and a son, Pierce.

Mike Vrabel on Meyer’s staff

Head coach Urban Meyer also announced today that Mike Vrabel, who coached the team’s linebackers this season after a decorated, 14-year career in the National Football League, has accepted an assistant coaching position with Meyer and will remain at his alma mater.

“I had heard such great things about Mike Vrabel as a player, but the key thing for me was I wanted to talk football with him,” Meyer said. “I wanted to see him recruit, and I wanted to meet his family. I have since spent a lot of time with him, and he has a wonderful family.

“I also spoke to a number of people I know well, who also know Mike very well, including Bill Belichick. Coach Belichick and I had a really good discussion about Mike. While Mike is young, we both agreed that the unique experiences he has had as a player, coupled with the things he has already accomplished as a coach and recruiter for Ohio State, has prepared Mike for this opportunity. I am very pleased he will be on the staff.”

The announcements of Withers and Vrabel increase the number of assistants on Meyer’s staff to six, and the number of defensive assistants to four. Luke Fickell, who will call plays as co-defensive coordinator, and Taver Johnson are additional defensive assistants. Stan Drayton will move from wide receivers coach to running backs coach. And Tom Herman, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Iowa State University the past three years, has accepted the same position with Ohio State.

now we get to see how good of a coach he really is..

can he motivate players to get up for every game knowing there isn't any post season play?

he inherits a recruiting class with a bunch of players that he may or may not have recruited if he had the choice..(but pulling offers would be SUICIDE with Ohio HS coaches)...btw this recruiting class is really going to be held in high esteem with Buckeye fans considering they arent wavering on their commitments despite the bowl ban in addition to the early commits who stayed despite the coaching uncertainty

scholarship limitations, not many..but enough that he cant afford to whiff on any recruits (either by not offering, or misjudging a kid's ability to play)

looks like Big 10 coaches have one more year to step their game up...

edit, his comments on the penalties

“I agreed to become the head football coach at The Ohio State University because Shelley and I are Ohio natives, I am a graduate of this wonderful institution and served in this program under a great coach. I understand the academic and athletic traditions here and will give great effort to continue those traditions.

“It is still my goal to hire excellent coaches, recruit great student-athletes who want to be a part of this program and to win on and off the field. The NCAA penalties will serve as a reminder that the college experience does not include the behavior that led to these penalties. I expect all of us to work hard to teach and develop young student-athletes to grow responsibly and to become productive citizens in their communities upon graduation.”

Now that we've removed the bullshit Urban has a year to ride these boys hard and make sure that the kids who deserve to play are playing. The D will get used to playing more of a rotation style and Braxton can grow up a bit. Say we go 9 or 10 wins next year... Urban will have these boys ready to stomp on necks in 2013. All that frustration and a seasoned team with a year of gelling? And a 2013 recruiting class who gets to (not fairly, but stil) be looked at as the complete new beginning? This team has a lot of frosh/soph talent that will be great in 2013

VERY easy schedule...anything could have happened.

with that said, talent and experience wise they wouldn't have been ready to face off against a LSU or bama in the NC. so, not going to a BCS game sucks but I'm not thinking that this cost us a NC or anything like that.

2013 is the year where experience and talent should meet. not having bowl practice next year though will hurt...and its beyond ridiculous that we're getting meaningless bowl practice now (with a lame duck coaching staff) instead of next year when we'll have our coaching staff and system in place.

agreed on the rest

at least this year gives Urban Meyer free reign to tinker with lineups, rotations, etc.

next season, Urban Meyer will have some extra recruiting time right after Thanksgiving.

and I hope Michigan goes undefeated going into The Game. Beat Alabama.

if an upperclassmen isn't enthused about playing next year im sure meyer will work that out pretty quickly.

i think the bowl ban stuff becomes more an issue for a senior laden team.

basically his vibe was that poor on the field results could be excused by the fact that they weren't post-season eligible and therefore had nothing to play for.

of course, he piped down with all that noise after SC beat the quacks and then dismantled a very formidable ucla squad.

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/coaches.html

new additions* (hasnt been made official yet, but pretty much done)

WR coach Zach Smith - Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has recruited an assistant from his Florida staff with the announcement today that Zach Smith would join his Ohio State coaching staff as a wide receivers coach. Smith was wide receivers and special teams coach for the past year at Temple University, which won nine games this season, including its first bowl win (37-15 over Wyoming in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl) in 32 years.

"Zach Smith has already coached with me for five seasons, and so I know what a quality coach he is," Meyer said. "He knows my system inside and out and he teaches the system the way I want it to be taught. He has coached and taught some great players already, like Percy Harvin, Aaron Hernandez and Louis Murphy."

Smith spent five years as a graduate assistant and quality control assistant for Meyer at Florida, during which time Florida won a pair of national championships while producing some of the best offensive and special teams units in the country. Smith was a special teams quality control coach for three years (2005-07) and an offensive graduate assistant for the 2008 and 2009 seasons. He assisted with coaching the UF wide receivers, quarterbacks and special teams during his time in Gainesville.

TE Coach - Tim Hinton
Tim Hinton enters his 30th year of coaching, including 16 years at the collegiate level, and second as the Notre Dame running backs coach. He was an assistant coach the last six seasons at Cincinnati and served as the Bearcats' running backs coach in five of those years.

In 2010, his first with the Irish, Hinton coached a stable of four running backs that combined to rush for 1,517 yards on 314 carries and averaged 4.8 yards per carry.

OL Coach - Ed Warriner
Warinner turned an offensive line at Notre Dame that was problematic for years into a solid, reliable unit that helped produce 4.82 yards per rush and allowed just 17 sacks in an offense that attempted 473 passes in the 2011 season.

Warriner, a 28-year coaching veteran, has extensive experience coaching within the spread offense, having spent three seasons coordinating the Kansas offense under Mark Mangino. Those three seasons were some of the most successful in Kansas football history, and the Jayhawk offense broke point and yardage records in that time. Following the 2009 season, Warriner was a finalist for the American Football Coaches Association's National Assistant Coach of the Year award. He has also coached offensive lines at Army, Air Force, and Illinois.

Most recently, Warriner was with Notre Dame. In his first season at Notre Dame, Warinner helped develop three first-time starters on the offensive line and improved the average yards per rush and decreased sacks allowed when compared to 2009. The Irish averaged 4.0 rushing yards per carry, the best rushing average by a Notre Dame team since 2003. Notre Dame's offensive line allowed a sack on only 4.0 percent of the overall pass attempts in 2010 and the 1.54 sacks allowed per game was the fewest by an Irish offensive line since 1998 (0.8 per game).

S&C Coach Kenny Parker - Parker came to Murray State after spending the previous 10 seasons as a player or coach at Florida. While at UF, he was a part of three SEC Championships and two National Championships. In his most recent role with the Gators, Parker served as a graduate assistant defensive line coach and assistant director of football camps during the 2009 season under Urban Meyer.

Prior to his time as a GA, Parker served two years as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Gators. Parker assisted in the strength, speed and conditioning for football and track. He also developed strength and conditioning programs for players and assisted in the nutritional development of players. Parker joined the Gator coaching staff as a defensive intern. He helped prepare the playbook and other gameday materials, while also assisting the defensive line with on-field conditioning and techniques.

297. "Assistant salaries (Lantern swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.thelantern.com/campus/osu-dishes-out-big-bucks-for-meyer-s-reign-1.2738887#.Tws5BNTLya_

With a $4 million per year salary, new Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer is the highest paid coach in the Big Ten conference, but OSU is spending millions on Meyer's assistants as well.

The combined salaries for the assistant coaches Meyer has hired is just under $3.5 million, and some positions have yet to be filled.
During Meyer's introductory press conference Nov. 28, he said assembling a top-quality staff was a priority.

"In 2005 … I think (Florida) put together the best coaching staff maybe in college football history," Meyer said. "I know that's a profound statement. But what those guys did, the recruits they brought in and the run that team went on, with the great players, the style of offense, defense and kicking game … my goal is to find that kind of group of coaches again.

"I think Ohio State deserves the best group of assistant coaches in America."

It appears OSU is helping Meyer pursue just that and is willing to shell out more cash than the university is accustomed to in the process.

According to information released by the OSU athletic department, the school is spending significantly more money on its football coaches in 2012 under Meyer than under former coaches Luke Fickell in 2011 and Jim Tressel.

In 2011, the head coach, defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator made a combined $1.475 million. In 2010, those three coaches earned $4.35 million.

In 2012, the head coach, defensive coordinators and offensive coordinator will make a combined total of $5.62 million. That's about a 281 percent increase from 2011 and about a 29 percent increase from 2010.

The increase between 2011 and 2012 can largely be attributed to Meyer's salary, which far exceeds that of Fickell. Tressel's contract was for $3.5 million in 2010.

Fickell was paid $775,000 in 2011, but after being removed as OSU's head coach and named the team's defensive coordinator for 2012, Fickell will receive $750,000 in 2012, meaning he's taking a $25,000 pay cut.

The co-defensive coordinator, Everett Withers, will make $450,000. Jim Heacock, the defensive coordinator in 2011, made $350,000.

New offensive coordinator Tom Herman will make $420,000 in 2012, which is $70,000 more than his predecessor, Jim Bollman. Bollman recently accepted a job as offensive line coach at Boston College.

But the increased spending isn't confined to coordinators.
New assistant athletic director for football sports performance Mickey Marotti will make $380,000, and will be in charge of the strength and conditioning of OSU football players.

In 2011, director of football performance Eric Lichter and coordinator for strength and conditioning Troy Sutton worked together to implement the Buckeyes' strength and conditioning program. They earned a combined total of $234,828. Sutton and Lichter were not retained in their positions.

Meyer has also created a few positions that previously did not exist.
The program previously did not have a director of football operations or a director of player personnel, but Meyer hired Brian Voltolini and Mark Pantoni to jobs with these titles.

Voltolini will make $160,000 as director of football operations and Pantoni will make $80,000 as director of player personnel.
When Meyer was introduced as OSU's coach, athletic director Gene Smith said he and the school would support Meyer in assembling the best possible staff.

"We'll put in place the resources necessary to attract the staff that Urban feels he needs," Smith said.

Smith deferred to athletic department spokesman Jerry Emig to answer questions regarding coaching salaries. Emig said Smith didn't give any restrictions on how much Meyer could spend.

"There was no pool of money established or set aside for (assembling the staff)," Emig said.

Traditionally, OSU is not known for spending large sums of money on their assistant coaches. Smith had previously said he wouldn't participate in a bidding war to land top assistant coaches like many SEC schools engage in.

During Meyer's introductory press conference, Smith made clear that mentality was changing. When asked what had changed, Smith said, "age and maturity and competition."
The immediate competition for the Buckeyes comes within the Big Ten Conference.

At $4 million, Meyer will be the highest paid coach in the Big Ten. According to a 2011 study by USA Today, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz was the conference's highest paid coach in 2011 with a salary of $3.785 million. Michigan's Brady Hoke is third with $3.254 million.
