"2012 Oakland A's Regular Season Post"
Mon Mar-26-12 11:11 AM by OldPro

The team is in Japan getting ready for their early start Wednesday so I guess it's time for this post. I think it's time to switch up the Mojo and retire the bandwagon... so no clever titles this time. It hasn't brought us much luck since 2006 so I think a change was in order.

Pressed for time this morning so I'll have to come back later to break down the team and season... just one little nugget before I go. Ka'aihue made two errors in his start today vs Hanshin. There was talk of splitting time between him and B Allen but from what I've read dude butchered it so badly in the field today that plan might be off the table.

2. I really, really, REALLY hate these jaunts to Japan. They're really obnoxious and serve no purpose.

Otherwise, regarding the season, I still feel like we're a solid third place team. I think we've got a lot of interesting pieces as position players, but I have zero confidence in our starting pitching. So, I figure this season will be about who fits and who doesn't. I'm not thrilled about the prospect of a season that's seems throwaway from the start, but so it goes.

Hitting in the upper 1/3 of the lineup should mean plenty of run and rbi opportunities... but with dude being unhappy in LF you just never know how it will play out. I kinda expect him to be traded at some point... if not this year then surely in 2013.

I understand where Hood is coming from... going into a season where rebuilding is the prime objective can be somewhat disheartening for fans. But outside of winning the reason I go to the park and take time to sit down and watch a game is to watch exciting ballplayers. This is something the A's have lacked big time since... well truthfully since the early 2000s.

A few weeks ago the A's were televising a spring training game vs The Reds while I was doing a shit load of yard work. I had the game on in the family room and found myself coming back in to check on Weeks, Manny & Cespedes. It hit me that it had been a long time since the A's had hitters that made you want to stop what you were doing and watch them hit.

Besides those 3 I'm really curious to see how guys like Cowgill, Reddick, Donaldson, Sogard and Allan do. I guess the fact I've seen a lot of guys on this roster play in AAA makes it more interesting to me.

As Hood alluded to, the pitching is something of a wild card this year. Sounds like the prospects will be split between the minors and the back end of the A's rotation. I'm not sure what to expect from them really. However I am hopefully Melvin has successfully addressed the defense... shit was just awful last year. But then our manager sucked ass and defense is the type of thing that can be fixed with the right coaching and focus.

Truth be told I'm not ready just to write off the season either... when you have this many variables going into a year almost anything could happen. The A's could lose a 100 or win the West... it's just going to depend on how the pitching does and the young hitters develop... stranger things have happened.

If you pressed me to pick a number on wins I'd have to go with something like 78... but it's spring and as they say hope springs eternal.

Go A's

It's bad enough that CSN Bay Area wasn't televising the game; the MLB Network channel was televising the game at a 3-hour delay -- 6am instead of 3am. But I found out that MLB.com was streaming it live, so I pay $20 for a month of MLB.com, mostly to catch this game...

I wake up at 2:30am log into MLB.com this morning to catch the game, and the fucking thing is blacked out in this market anyway! I end up having to watch the damn game on some bootleg-ass stream on Justin.tv.

I get that the A's are not that important to the powers that be in the MLB, but it's the first game of the major league season... how are you not gonna televise the game live?

And of course, they lose the same way as they did all last year... starting pitcher keeps it close, A's lose late. (Extra innings hurt when they're happening at 6am.)

That said, I am still hopeful about the team, and expect better results tonight.

Looked familiar seeing the A's continually fail to get big hits with runners in scoring position but I have heard that Felix guy is pretty good. Hopefully the hitting perks up a bit when the A's get a shot at Vargas in the next game.

On the bright side, McCarthy took the first step to showing that last year was no fluke. 7 innings of one run ball in 82 pitches.

Not a good first game for Brandon Allen, two strikeouts, popped up a bunt. I really want him to hit, but I can't help but think he's a 4A guy.

The lineup is pretty much a work in progress with them waiting for Manny and the young players and all. if Coco and Seth Smith are 3-4 in July then I'll be disappointed. As emeng said the result did look a lot like last year but the big difference is the D looked solid and were young as hell. Weeks looked great both in the field and at the dish and it's nice to see Cespedes get a knock in his first game... an extra base hit off felix at that. I really hope Allen can stick at first too... a left handed power bat would do a lot for this lineup. And what's with Zuke in Japan? Dude just kills it over there.

Hopefully we'll get the split tonight... or today... or whatever the hell it is.

Not only were they extreme homers but dull as fuck. Watching the highlights with Fosse calling Cespedes' HR made the shit seem 20x more exciting.

BTW that cat really does look like the second coming of Bo in just about every way possible.

Yup. I'm hoping he'll be able to provide the kind of pop that hasn't been around since Frank Thomas left.

From what I've seen so far it looks like his power comes in the form of lasers to the gaps. That's not the best place to try and go yard at the Colosseum. The ball last night would have hit the wall about 3 feet below the top.

Even nicer to see some power from the new additions to the line-up. Another sparkling start from a less than stellar starting pitcher in Bartolo Colon. Don't want to get too excited by the great pitching because the Mariners have been even worse at offense than the A's recently. But if Bartolo and Brandon continue to pound the strikezone like this they can really anchor the rotation.

I know everyone is pumped to see Cespedes drilling a homerun but I'm also excited about Reddick. To see him launch one of a lefty reliever is a nice sign. Having a couple of young, 20 HR outfielders who are excellent defenders would be good step forward.

I've certainly let my issues with the pitching this be known, but no way do I think we're THAT bad. We're a third place time with an outside chance to make it to 0.500; we're not the second worst team in the leagues. ESPN are morons.

The highlight of a largely miserable game by far. Didn't see the one on Saturday, but I'm going to be really happy if he keeps this up.

Otherwise? I don't want to sound like a broken record here, but the pitching sucks ass. Donaldson certainly didn't help McCarthy was that dumb error in the opener, but McCarthy wasn't very sharp regardless. And as good as Cespedes looks to be with the bat, he's got to get a lot better in the field. Two miscues in two home games (only the second one really hurt). Oh, and Colon stunk.

As long as Weeks and Cespedes keep progressing and have success I'm not all that concerned with wins and losses. Right now I think the most important thing is the team finds the pillars to rebuild on. So far so good... now if we can just get an Allen or Carter going we might have something. But yeah the pitching is real shaky... but didn't we pretty much expct this to be the case?

That's pretty much what I said in post #1: this year is all about developing the position players and seeing what we've got and if we can build around them. I don't imagine the pitching will be ready until 2014 (hence the name of the off-season post).

We're technically not going to need a fifth starter for a lil' bit (with the off-days falling as they do), so he's in Triple A just so he can pitch a couple of times instead of sit around in the dugout.

But I can't say I'm that upset about it. I wish the A's could get some power out of first base but I'm starting to be convinced that Allen isn't major league quality. He might be able to get better, but after a hot start when the A's first got him last year he's looked completely over-matched. It just seemed like once the scouting report on him got out then every major league pitcher abused him. It got to the point that I expected him to strike out whenever he came up.

but i refuse to believe Barton is a guy you want to play during a rebuild. We have a pretty damn good idea of who he is at this point... Allen still has a lot of upside so giving him those innings (or Carter for that matter) makes a lot more sense. This is just Billy being Billy once again.

I'm surprised the A's ditched Allen so quickly but, honestly, I always thought Barton would win the job back at some point this year. I think it's generous to call Allen streaky at this point, he's played 109 games in the majors and has hit .205/.291/.375 which is pretty awful. It's not a lot of games, but even by the eyeball test Allen doesn't look like he can hit major league pitching.

I'm no scout so I can't say for sure that Allen can't make the jump to MLB but personally I'm not worried that he's going to catch on with some other team and become a middle of the order threat.

I had hoped that the gap power he displayed in Sac would grow into something more but it's never materialized. I'm just sick and tired of the A's rolling out punchless corner players.

My point on Allen being he was the best first baseman on the team during the spring... got two starts vs Felix and then got released. They might as well just cut ties with him in the off season because the way it all went down he had basically no real chance to stick. It just makes Beane come off like he has no real plan.

Milone was our minor league pitcher of the year a few seasons ago. his call up last year was a good sign when he held the Phillies scoreless thru 6. he's not gonna *wow* you, but he's VERY crafty.

First thing that jumped out at me seeing him pitch in person is how great his command is. I was looking at his minor league starts the other day and saw he was putting up a 10-1 (or better) K to BB ratio... that ain't no joke.

I understand not committing that type of money to Hammer. I guess he could have been the DH in a year or so but we still have Michael Choice & Grant Green to make room for at some point. And don't look now but Taylor is beasting again down in AAA. At some point they are going to have to just put that dude out there and give him 4-6 weeks.

If he hadn't gotten three years from Minnesota, I bet the A's were ready to be a landing spot for him. But he shouldn't own a baseball glove and the A's have too many outfield spots to sort out to give three years to a guy who probably should be a DH now.

Colon was out of his mind last night... really nice to have some power on the team again after all these years. Dig they brought the forearm bash back too. Still need more production out of the corner infield positions and Weeks & Coco need to get going at the top... but over all I can't be mad at how this team is shaping up. If we can find one more consistent bat to put behind Reddick & Cespedes we could have a very good offense at some point.

Looking forward to Saturday and the 72 team reunion. I'll be behind home plate with video camera in hand.

Let's go A's

so far, bartolo is looking like a nice pickup. he's been pitching extremely well.

and yoenis being yoenis. he smashed that ball against santana. i love watching this guy hit.

reddick is starting to heat up too. its nice to see the a's finally make things happen with runners in scoring position.

I don't know if he has enough left in the tank to make it through the whole season, but he's almost earned his $2M contract in his first 4 starts. He might even be able to pitch well enough to bring something decent back in a mid-season trade.

Let's not forget there are two wildcards this year... it's early enough to stay positive. There is plenty of time for reality later lol

I'm not gonna try and kill anybody's play-off hopes this early in the season. If Braden and Anderson comeback healthy at some point this summer and you add youngsters Jarrod Parker and Brad Peacock then Bartolo might be expendable. Especially if you consider that he's going to be 39 next month and he really fell off in the second half last year. It might be worth considering cashing out at the halfway point if the A's can get a decent return.

with the extra wildcard spot, we might be able to slip into the playoffs. i know this is supposed to be a "rebuilding" year, but for the most part i like the team we're fielding. if the a's can get a little help on the corners, the team can be competitive.

i really wish sizemore wouldn't have gotten hurt. i felt like he was ready for a big season.

I've seen enough of him between Sac and Oakland to know this dude just doesn't have what it takes. It's not just the way he can lose his control at the drop of a dime but how he handles himself on the mound when he's struggling. Dude just gets rattled way too easy.

Oh an Fuentes... fuck that dude to infinity. That bastard completely fucked up what could have been an excited conclusion Saturday night... yeah I know Reddick misjudged the ball but that shit was still hammered to the wall. I couldn't help by lay into dude when we came down to cover home on his wild pitch. I kept it PG-13 with all the kids around but I had a 10-15 second tirade that was close to an out of body experience.

But man it is tough to watch Tyson out there on the mound. He get's great movement on the sinker but man, it seems like he barely has an idea where it's going. As long as he keeps the runs from crossing the plate everything is all good, but he never makes it easy.

Between him Suzuki and Barton I'm about ready to gouge my eyes out. I was talking to a few people in my section Saturday night and we were all in agreement Cespedes really needs some protection in the 5 hole. I was glad to see Kila in the lineup and moved up to the 5th spot Sunday... the whole order past 5 has been painful to watch most nights but it was killing me to watch Smith kill rally after all or fail to come through with the table set. The place for him is 6 or lower... hopefully Manny will be able to get back to 60-70% of his old self and we can drop him behind Cespedes. And don't even get me started on Daric "upper cut" Barton *smh*

You pick up Luke Hughes instead of just bringing Adam Rosales up? I know Rosales isn't a long term answer any where but I'm pretty damn sure he's better (and more versatile) than this stiff Luke Hughes.

Dude was never dominating, but he worked through what could be a very potent line-up and got the key outs when he need them; though admittedly I got nervous when Fukodome got that quick hit.

But that was some clutch eighth inning hitting. I was a little disappointed they didn't do more against Floyd, but we got through to him when we needed to.

Yes, Hughes sucks. And Sogard should NEVER play SS again.

because my daughter and I were talking about how much smoother Sogard looks than Pennington lol... not that Sogard is the second coming of Omar Vizquel but Pennington plays shortstop like he runs the bases... with a lot of extra and forced body movement. I swear every time I see Penny coming around third on what's going to be a close play I just assume he's going to be thrown out... it's like you can see the dude locking up right before your eyes. His defense is the same way... the dude just isn't very athletic when you get down to it. I've seen Sogard play short enough here in Sac to feel comfortable with the A's playing him there.

I actually expected it last night

If we could score a few more runs we wouldn't be in this position. Our pitching has been better than expected and the hitting worse... what sucks is you know once we start hitting a little the pitching will probably fall off. These things seem to have a way of balancing out.

Yeah, Balfour was due to blow one sooner or later. Overall, he's done a good job as closer. At least we're still in the game. Headed to the bottom of 11th now. It'd be really nice to end the homestand with a W.

could this be the return of a 40/40 guy to oakland? he has the wheels to steal 40 bases. playing in oakland won't help his cause with the 40 hrs.

I know you are a Barton dude but I'm actively rooting for a Ka'aihue/Carter left/right combo at first... that shit needs to happen before June

I know he hit three HRs in one game a little while ago, and that got him back on track. If nothing else, they could use him at DH, 'cause Seth Smith really isn't doing shit.

It also appears that calling up Michael Taylor should be imminent. Juggling the line-up is going to be interesting.

Hitting .280 w/ 4 HRs.... but as you mentioned he had 3 of those in one game up in Reno last week. It's the second time he's hit 3 in that park... Ive been up there to watch the Cats play and can tell you the ball jumps out of that park. Only game I've been to this year was the one against the A's so I really can't speak on how he's looking at the plate... he looked lost as hell in that one game but he was facing Tommy Milone who was perfect through 7 that night. I will say his defense at first looked light years better than it did last year. But we've just come to the point where something has got to give with both him and Taylor.. either these dudes are going to be part of the future or their aren't. This is the season to find out... I don't want to be heading into 2013 wondering if they will or won't make the team.

Another guy that's really pushing the issue is the new catcher Norris. Again I haven't seen much of the cats so far this year but I usually check the box scores daily and he always seems to have a couple hits and an RBI or two. I'd like to see my boy Anthony Recker stick but unless he finds his offense soon we might see Norris getting a shot before too long.

The 28 strike outs are a little alarming though... but I think we could live with that as long as he can drive in runs at the big league level.

I am a Barton fan because I thought that when he got healthy he would start hitting like he did in 2010, but the A's can't wait around on him forever. I liked Kila back when he was trying to break through in the Royals system, and they way he's hitting now he needs to be in the line-up.

Can't say I usually like seeing a hitter trying to pull a pitch like that but considering the situation I applaud the fact he took it upon himself to get the team back in it. If there was a hot Manny or other bats behind him I would say it was a bad pitch to try and pull out of the park... but with a team that had only scored 2 innings out of 29 up to that point might as well just go for broke.

at least come off the bag with the Colon throw if that's what it takes to keep the double play in order. When you're put in for defensive reasons that shit is just unacceptable... especially when you're hitting sub 200.

Seriously it's just hard to watch this dude anymore... bases juiced down 5 in the 7th w two outs... what's this fucker do? Look at strike 3 of course... exactly what I told my wife he was going to do two pitches before it happened. I've seen this act far too many times not to expect it by now. My neighbor even came over to bitch about Barton's lack of aggressiveness after that inning... asking me why he's still on the team. I had no answer. I'd rather watch Carter hit 200 than Barton's bitch ass. Come on Billy! *smdh*

Hopefully the time for a move is near

http://blog.sfgate.com/athletics/2012/04/30/milone-gets-thumping-at-fenway-park-as-bats-come-alive-late/

...Then the As slapped five runs on the board in the seventh, with three coming on a homer by Reddick, making it 11-6 and Oakland left the bases loaded that inning when Daric Barton struck out looking against Vicente Padilla.

That was not an at-bat that will keep Barton in the lineup. Melvin praised some of Bartons early-season at-bats when he first came off the DL and he was swinging more aggressively, but this seemed like Barton reverting to the passive wait-for-a-perfect-pitch-or-walk mode. With two outs and men in scoring position, and the team in the midst of a rally, someone who wants playing spot even a roster spot needs to swing at pitches near the zone. Especially with two strikes.

Melvin is not one to rip his players, and when I asked specifically about Bartons at-bat, he said, Hes looking for a good ball to hit there. He has a certain style of hitting. Id probably have to look at the pitch.

Im guessing Melvin might not like the looks of things on video when he checks. Barton also didnt help himself much on defense, either; after missing two bounced throws that he said he felt he should have gotten the day before, Barton let another high-bounce throw past him again Monday, when Jemile Weeks rushed a throw in the Red Soxs four-run second inning.

Im not sure it would have been possible for Barton to get all three of those throws, the two on Sunday and the one Monday, but two out of three, again, would go some way toward justifying playing time. As it is, I have a feeling we shall see more of Kila Kaaihue, and I wonder how long the As might go carrying two left-handed hitting first basemen.

but do we have a grant balfour/closer problem? he has really struggled in the last 3 or 4 outings. last night, i was having flashbacks of sunday's debacle. might be time to give ryan cook a few save opportunities.

since most of the time the game is really decided in 6th or 7th inning... I'd rather have Cook or Norberto in those situations than Fuentes or Balfour. The whole idea of a "closer" is just stupid imo... when the other team is mounting a threat is when you want your best pitchers in. The way the A's pen is set up that's working to our advantage more often than not.

Oh and I see a lot of Rich Harden in Parker.... I just hope it's minus the injuries.

it's better to have your best arm out of the pen pitch when the game is ready to swing one way or the other. With two on in the 7th no way did I want to see Fuentes or Balfour come into that situation. Someday a manager is going to wake up and say fuck this closer shit.

Got out to the Cat's game Tuesday and was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable Chris looked at the plate. His HR numbers are a down a bit but he's floating around 300 and looks light years better in his approach than he did when I saw him early April.

It's just hard to tell with AAA though... Donaldson is raking now that he's back down too.

But we really need to get Carter up soon so we have an idea of what we have before Manny starts working his way back.

Taking 2 of 3 from one of the best teams in baseball works for me. I'll like it even more even we can use that momentum to keep playing well back at home.

And no doubt about Melvin. But we haven't had much since Tony L left. What's more interesting is to wonder who I liked the least out of the people that followed. Tough to decide between Macha and Geren.

Last year's team woulda lost 2 out of 3 in Boston and gotten swept in Tampa after that demoralizing loss in Baltimore. This year's team has grit. KKudos to Geren.

I have to admit, when they walked Gomes to load the bases the only thing I was thinking was "OK, Melvin has to bring in Kila to hit for Inge right?"

Sorry for doubting you Brandon.

incredible! inge smoked that ball. like you, i had my doubts when inge came up. i was thinking to myself, "just don't hit into a double play, inge!" inge did a good job after looking lost his few 3 times at bat.

also, props to taylor for starting off that rally with a double. even after racking up 3 Ks, he kept swinging the bat and it paid off.

and balfour is really entering into brian fuentes territory for me. i used to have a lot of confidence in balfour, but its fading quickly.

...I came in here to post: isn't it Carter time already? If he's not adding any value beyond what Kila is, then it's time to call this experiment to an end.

But they're going to do is wait until Manny is eligible, and send him down then. And we will just have to deal with it.

I'm so conditioned to seeing those type of arguments for dude over at Athletics Nation I automatically kicked into eye rolling mode. Those stat freaks over there have a number for everything... just a few weeks ago I got into it with a couple dudes that had some stat 'proving' Fuentes was more effective than Ryan Cook. When I pointed out Cook hadn't given up a run and only two hits (at the time) they started throwing out some weird stat (FIBA or something like that) where Fuentes ranked higher. I was done.

To key members of the team at that. I remember a Tuesday night rain delayed game I went to last year where we worked the Angels over and moved into solo possession of first... only to have injuries wipe out our starting rotation in the days that followed. We could have absorbed the Cespedes injury without too much trouble if Weeks, Inge and Kila hadn't gone down too... I see Weeks is back in the lineup tonight but Kila & Inge are still out... which means everyone's favorite Daric "called 3rd strike" Barton will be back in there again. The lineup yesterday was so bad I chalked an "L" up vs Verlander before even sitting down to watch the game.

Oh one more thing of note... Cliff Pennington has zero fuckin range... we could really use a defensive minded shortstop even if he only hit 220-240. Problem is I don't think we have any in our system.

I just really enjoy watching this dude play the game. He's been told his entire career that he's a 4th outfielder at best and plays with a chip on his shoulder. He's our MVP right now, if I had to pick one.

I missed the first part of this Angel's game but I am enjoying every minute of garbage time right now. Shit, even Donaldson got a hit, against Izzy!

I hope Colon gets his velocity back tomorrow and we sweep these fools.

In response to Reply # 0
Tue May-15-12 12:23 PM by OldPro

Manny will be back at the end of the month and Coco & Cespy before that so we're clearly going to have to do some roster shuffling. The way I see it we need to have two plans... one while still in contention and another should we fall too far back.

Assuming we're still hanging around 500 at the end of the month Billy & Company need to take the win now approach. That means a rookie that isn't ready to help us win now can't just be handed playing time. As much as I want to see Taylor & Carter get extended looks they just aren't guys we can count on now. Seth Smith and Johnny Gomez are making things much more difficult in the outfield... I know Manny is pretty much just a DH at this point but assuming Cowgill is sent back down we're still left with 6 outfielders... no way can we carry 6. The natural odd man out would seem to be Coco... but is he even movable at this point? I'd really hate to part with Gomez right now (I just really like how that dude plays the game) but if Manny is even 60% of Manny, Mr. 707 may be redundant. I think Barton is an obvious candidate but if we send him down we need to have another option at first... preferably right handed. Recker can handle 1st but the way he's looking at the plate I'm not so sure he'll be with the team come June. It might be better to roll with Donaldson as the backup catcher... if just for his versatility. Dude can catch, play 3rd, 1st, 2nd and OF. Going that rout though could mean having to make 2 or 3 defensive moves for one should either catcher go down on a day they are both in the lineup. but that's where Inge being on the team could provide for a little flexibility seeing as he can catch in an emergency. I don't think Inge has played first but I can't imagine he couldn't fill in there too in a pinch.

What do yall think?

I don't see how the A's are going to find at bats for everybody but it seems like whenever I think the A's have a log jam, injury and shitty play usually figure things out.

The easiest move is to send Barton down, earlier in the year the A's had Gomes getting in extra work at first base but I'm not sure if they're still doing that. But even if he can't help there the A's should be able to get by with Donaldson and Inge backing up Kila.

The OF is a little tougher because I don't know what they can do with Coco. At this point it seems pretty obvious that Smith, Cespedes, and Reddick should be the starting OF with Gomes rotating in to face lefties. Ideally the A's could move Coco rather than use him as an expensive 4th OFer but I don't see why anybody would trade for him after his recent play.

There is also the possibility that Manny is just done. He will going to Sacramento on Sunday and it will be interesting to see how he does there. I don't know if the A's have to bring him to Oakland on the 30th but it might be better to have him stay down in AAA for a while and show he can still hit.

I was dealing with this asshole dentist by that name the other day... must have just lodged in my brain.

On Manny, it sounds like the plan is to bring him up as soon as he is available. The A's official Twitter feed sent out a few tweets today with his 10 day Sac stint and then listed his first home game for the A's... June 4th vs Texas. Also Melvin was quoted as saying he doesn't really care what type of numbers he puts up until he gets to the big club... I'd be really shocked if Manny doesn't join the club, if not right away, as soon as they come off that road trip.

The A's have been able to work with him in Arizona during the suspension so they should have an idea about his swing and what he's got left. I just hope they're making a baseball decision and not bringing him up based on his reputation.

We can at least give Manny as much. It's more likely than not he's not going to be close to the same guy he was 3 years ago but we at least have to find out. Because if Manny comes back and hits like Manny, and the A's pitching continues to be as good as it's been, we will be right in the thick of the duel wild card chase. Good Manny in the 5 hole behind Cespy turns the A's lineup into something it can't possibly be without him. If after 6 weeks it's clearly not there just cut him and move on. But I want to see something like this for at least a month...

Weeks
Pennington
Reddick
Cespedes
Ramirez
Ka'aihue
Smith/Gomes
Inge
Suzuki

*edit*

Just saw this tweet about Coco

Susan Slusser ‏ @susanslusser
Melvin unsure if Crisp will come off DL when eligible May 18; a minor-league rehab possible. Coco and Manny both with @Rivercats?

Sounds like the A's are going to try and string it out as long as possible.

I get your point about Barton but my thinking is that Barton shouldn't have been given 6 weeks. The amount of leeway the A's gave Barton is part of the reason I'm slightly concerned about the Manny situation. Both guys are pretty far away from when they were actually productive major leaguers, I don't think you have to let them work through things in the majors early on out of respect.

I felt at the beginning of the season that Barton should've started the year in AAA and proved in Sacramento that he was over his injuries/struggles from last year. Then, if he was looking like the player he was in '10, you promote him back to the majors when he's earned it.

This is all hypothetical right now, because for all I know Manny could show up in Sacramento and hit the ground running, making it obvious that he belongs in the majors. I agree that Manny deserves an extended chance to show what he can do but I don't necessarily agree that his chance should needs to be in Oakland right away.

Manny was one of the greatest right handed hitters of all time... I think I'm ok with extending him a little more rope than a guy whos a 280 hitter on his best day.

But like you said we'll find out where he's at soon enough.

as big as any we've had this year... prevents a real losing streak before it starts and gets us back to a game over 500 heading back to the bay for the series at AT&T. And props to Fuentes for closing it out with very little drama.

I'm really digging the way this team can grind out wins.

I'm happy with a split in Arlington, and it'll be good to have a little momentum going into the Bay Bridge Series.

A's just have to keep plugging away and avoiding long losing streaks until our guys start to heal up. Can't wait to have Cespedes back in the line up.

Yeah yeah I know I have it out for Barton but come the fuck on... you would think a dude at the major league level would learn to call off a teammate when he's going to make a catch. When you have a speedy secondbaseman like Weeks you have to know he's going to be coming hard until he hears you call for it. This is like the 3rd time already this year and this one almost cost them the game.

This fuck can't get DFAed soon enough for my taste.

actually it could have been a lot worse if the Angels hadn't ran themselves out of the first two innings (Scioscia is a moron for squeezing in that situation)

But as I've said before, if I never see Graham "for the love of" Godfrey pitch again it will be too soon. Fuck sending that cat back down here to Sac... just DFA that bitch and be done with it.

Now we gotta beat Weaver today to take the series *sigh*... we need to get healthy asap.

I have to imagine that they're now looking at Blackley to fill his spot in the rotation. He looked solid out there, and we just need him to go us 5 innings.

You cannot imagine how happy I was after Pennington got that single. There would be nothing more miserable than watching CJ Wilson no-hit us.

The defense also saved us more runs early in the game. Cowgill's throw was really good. Too bad that it got ugly in the later innings.

I still don't know why they gave everyone the night off; the whole team rests on Thursday.

Lucky us

I don't usually reply to reporters and such but I needed some outlet... it was either that or walking outside and screening "Fuck Graham Godfrey" at the top of my lungs.

>I have to imagine that they're now looking at Blackley to
>fill his spot in the rotation. He looked solid out there, and
>we just need him to go us 5 innings.

Should be the logical choice but it sounds like we're stuck with this loser for at least one more start.

>You cannot imagine how happy I was after Pennington got that
>single. There would be nothing more miserable than watching CJ
>Wilson no-hit us.

No shit

>The defense also saved us more runs early in the game.
>Cowgill's throw was really good. Too bad that it got ugly in
>the later innings.

Donaldson is a weird ass player right now... dude either can't hit or field a lick or he's looking like an all star... How about just giving us a little consistency? This has always been one of my main problems with Pennington too.

>I still don't know why they gave everyone the night off; the

I think Melvin just said fuck it, Godfrey's pitching so we might as well just get everyone some rest tonight

168. "San Jose plays waiting game with Bud Selig (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

(I knew it was going to come down to this sooner or later... If Selig doesn't move on this soon MLB is getting sued)

As the A's pursuit of a new stadium drags on, the city of San Jose is well aware that a lawsuit challenging Major League Baseball's antitrust exemption might be the next step.

"We've certainly thought about it," Mayor Chuck Reed said Thursday. "We're trying to let the commissioner work through the process. But it is an absurdly long time, there's no doubt about it."

Commissioner Bud Selig created a panel to look into the A's desire for a new stadium more than three years ago, but the territorial rights to San Jose belong to the Giants, who do not wish to negotiate them away. There has been no decision to change the territorial rights, and although the A's had wanted to put the issue on the agenda for the May owners meetings, they were dissuaded from doing so.

According to industry sources, because the A's withdrew their request to be on the agenda, there is some thought that a decision might be made, one way or the other, before the next owners meetings in August. That could not be confirmed with the commissioner's office, which continued a policy of not commenting on the matter except in formal news conferences.

Should the Giants lose the territorial rights, which came along with the team sale, they are likely to threaten a lawsuit. Should San Jose lose out, the nation's 10th-largest city might follow the same path as St. Petersburg, Fla., and challenge MLB's antitrust exemption.

In 1994, the Florida Supreme Court ruled that baseball's antitrust exemption does not extend to the sport's overall business, allowing the state attorney general to investigate whether owners conspired to prevent the Giants from moving to St. Petersburg. Two potential owners threatened potential antitrust lawsuits, and the following year owners voted to approve the expansion Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

"What the Giants are doing is very anti-competitive," Reed said. "They're trying to drive a competitor out of the market."

In addition, San Jose has a downtown site and city officials who back an A's stadium. "We have an opportunity here, and they are interfering with our opportunity," Reed said. "Whether or not that leads to litigation, I don't know. It's certainly an option, but we are trying to accommodate the commissioner."

Reed said the city will not explore any legal measures as long as A's owner Lew Wolff continues to oppose them.

"We can be as patient as Lew likes," he said. "It's the team owners' money, their investment."

Wolff is scheduled to meet with Clorox CEO Don Knauss on Friday. Knauss recently said at a news conference with city of Oakland officials that Clorox is working along with other East Bay companies to get a stadium built for the A's in Oakland, and he said they have identified a group of owners that would purchase the team to keep it in Oakland.

Wolff reiterated that the club is not for sale. A's officials have not appreciated Knauss' attempted involvement in what they see as their business, and they are expected to express that Friday.

is the lack of depth. If someone gets injured, we're fucked! Taking away multiple key parts at the same time -- Cespedes, McCarthy, Coco, and Inge -- and it's unsustainable. And that's what we're seeing now. There just wasn't enough talent on the field to play with the big boys. I went to two games last week and they could barely muster hits in eiher of them.

(It's especially tough to watch Coco right now because really, he could have used a rehab assignment after such a long time off.)

I like our chances once we get all our key pieces back, but it's tough to watch right now.

Truthfully I'd rather watch the Rivercats right now... although what I saw of Manny Sunday night wasn't very encouraging. I see he had a couple hits yesterday and drove the ball to the track in his last AB, but dude just looked all out of sorts in the game I saw. It was good to see Carter go deep for a Grand Slam though... oh and Luke Hughes sucks in AAA too.

It's times like these when I wished I still watched the NBA... FUCK

I JUST KNEW Hammer was going to take Fuentes deep... called that shit two pitches before it happened.

But for real it's time to cut the bullshit. This team has some nice pieces but some of the fat needs to be cut and cut soon. I like the move keeping Donaldson up and sending Recker back down but there's a lot more that need to be done.

First move is to just make Cook the closer and be done with it. I know I'm on record as saying the idea of a closer is stupid but we all know cook is going to end up there sooner or later... until then the whole pen is unsettled. We're going to need to find a couple more reliable arms... but then isn't this year supposed to be about finding out what we have? I say just move Fuentes or Balfour (at least one of them) and let the search begin.

Barton being sent down better be a given at this point. Kila has shown he's every bit as good, if not better, at picking balls and without a question is the more aggressive hitter. I'm not sold on him being either the long or short term answer for the club but I do know he's a better ball player than Barton... hell who isn't better than Barton? Fuck all this shit... Carter needs to be brought up as the right handed bat at first. Despite Billy playing musical positions with dude a couple years back, he's looking as comfortable at first as I've seen him during his entire tenure with the Cats. At this point I have no idea if he's ever going to make it in the bigs but it's past time we found out. Give him a couple months seeing lefties and we'll go from there. If this means moving a guy like Gomes, Smith or Coco so be it... if you going to rebuild this bitch, then rebuild it.

Trade for a shortstop. Seriously this might be as needed a move as any I'm listing. Pennington is just not the guy... we look silly acting like we have a long term solution at short. Strong arm with little to no range and extremely inconstant at the plate... the way he plays defense he needs to be at least a 280 hitter... he's no where close to that. We don't have much in the system at the position so it's time to look outside. I can live with a 220 hitting shortstop as long as he can get to some of these balls and make the routine plays consistently. If Billy can't find anything out there then lets get a look at Brandon Hicks who's been playing a nice SS for the Rivercats. I doubt he's the answer but again let's find out.

And finally find a way to get Derrick Norris to the big leagues. I'm not saying get rid of Suzuki right now... I don't want to see the staff suffer with two young catchers. But let's at least come to the realization Zuk is never going to be anything but an average (at best) catcher. After this year I think it's time to move on.

The good is we have two young dynamic outfielders, a second basemen whos only going to get better, a shit load of good young arms and a good amount of positional talent starting to rise through the system. We just have the remember this season is about the future... and the sooner we embrace that future the better.

OF COURSE blew it in every way possible, and of course it was Willingham who finished us off. Supreme fucking ugh.

But yeah, pretty much co-sign on everything you said. Injuries or not, the season is slipping away from us right now. And we have to be able to scratch a win or two against at least some of these teams. If we can't get right against the Royals, then I don't know what to tell you. 'Cause after that it's Texas, and then interleague, which we haven't been nearly as good at as we used to.

I agree it's time to just make Cook the closer and be done with it. I'm not QUITE ready to give up Pennington (I still think last season shows he can put something together) but the time my be soon at hand.

The point is going to come when the team is out looking for another ss... I'd just rather get it over with now. His defense is just not good enough for a 250 lifetime hitter. Even some of the "highlight" plays he makes look better than they really are because he's so late to the ball. Last year my daughter (who admittingly has an agenda against dude) pointed out his footwork when moving laterally... not only is his first move to the ball slow but he takes a small step with the push foot instead of just planting and crossing over. This is the sign of a player that isn't trying to get around the ball as much as he should be... probably a result of being able to get by on his arm all these years. Funny because when he runs he takes choppy steps too... the guy just isn't a very good athlete when you get down to it... at least not for a shortstop.

As far as the outfield goes, they want to feature Coco and make him look good so that they can trade him for value. They didn't know they could sign Cespedes when they resigned him; they didn't know he was going to be redundant. I get that. Everybody else? I have no problem sending them down. And Barton should be the first to go.

Gomes has a way of making it look like he's better than he is... but 39ks in 34 games... ummmm no

Smith is more of a national league 4th outfielder/pinch hitter type player... I have Jack Cust flashbacks whenever he's out in the field. It's not that he's awful but with where we are right now we can't justify carrying a vet who's upside in that minimal.

This is what I'd like to see come together over the next couple months

-Starters-
Brandon McCarthy (Andrew Carignan)
Bret Anderson (Bartolo Colon)
Jarrod Parker
Tom Milone
Dallas Braden (Jim Miller)

-Long Relief-
Tyson Ross
Travis Blackley

-Middle Relief-
Pedro Figueroa (Brian Fuentes)
Sean Doolittle (Grant Balfour)
Bruce Billings (Jerry Blevins)
Jordan Norberto

-Closer-
Ryan Cook

-Catchers-
Kurt Suzuki
Josh Donaldson

-Infielders-
Kila Ka`aihue
Jemile Weeks
Chris Carter (Daric Barton)
Brandon Inge
Adam Rosales
Brandon Hicks* (Cliff Pennington)

-Outfielders-
Yoenis Cespedes (Coco Crisp)
Josh Reddick
Michael Taylor, Grant Green or Brandon Moss (Seth Smith)
Collin Cowgill*

-DH-
Manny* (Johnny Gomes)

* For at least 150 ABs
(roster spot taken)

Now I know they aren't moving Pennington out this year so I can live with Rosales being the guy instead. We signed Manny so we might as well play him. But if he struggles we can use this slot for another one of our young guys.... If Donaldson doesn't stick Derick Norris maybe.

Bottom line is change is needed... and it needs to start today.

Helluva game by Jarred Parker. Mastering a line-up THAT potent is impressive, especially after getting a huge lead to work with. The kid pitched his ass off, so props.

And that's two offensive explosions in three games. Granted, they were sandwiched around another donut, but it's good to see that the hitting can be there is some capacity.

Don't know how the rest of the series will pan out, but right now I've certainly got a smile on my face.

The dude is the real deal... why the hell Arizona traded him & cook is beyond me.

But Parker & Milone is a really good place to start when rebuilding a staff... if either Peacock or Sonny Gray turns out to be as good as they think we might just have us a new big 3.

Nice to see the real A's lineup back in action... I never got too worried with the offensive struggles because when this team is healthy they've shown they can score runs and even explode at times. Weeks, Reddick & Cespy are 3 nice pieces to build an offense around... I like that Zuk and Penny are bringing up the rear at 8-9. I still think Cowgill is more of a 4th outfielder type but I'm liking him in the 2 hole right now. Now we just need to find out if Kila can be an everyday player and how much Inge has left in the tank (in case we want to bring him back) We have a few more young players that need to be sorted out but all in all I think we're seeing the team we'll be watching for the next 3-5 years starting to come together.

I love that we drafted not one, but two shortstops yesterday as well... Penny is not the long term solution and it looks like Beane knows it.

Looking forward to seeing Doolittle pitch too.

from Susan Slusser twitter feed:

@susanslusser
The Chronicle has confirmed that Brandon Moss and Evan Scribner have been called up. #Athletics

@susanslusser
The most likely roster spot for Moss is Ka'aihue's. #Athletics

@susanslusser
My guess is that Ka'aihue is designated for assignment though that is not official nor confirmed. #Athletics

‏@susanslusser
Terrific opportunity for Moss, who has been playing 1B w/ @Rivercats and who has 15 homers. I'd guess he'd be in lineup tonight. #Athletics

I'm confused as hell by this... Kila has been playing pretty well lately and has looked solid around the bag at first. I'm all for getting a look at the guys in our system but it seems crazy to just jettison a player like Kila this early in the year.

OP, what's the word on Moss? (I take it you've seen him a lot more than I have.) Is he better than Barton, at least?

I haven't seen him at all... He hasn't played in any of the 3 cats games Ive been to this year. I know he's leading the team in HRs and has stayed hot most of the year. Thing is the guy is 28 years old (same as Kila) and has over 700 major league ABs already. If you take a look at his stats it looks like he's put up similar numbers to what Kila has show in about half as many ABs.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mossbr01.shtml

It seems like a lateral move at best... this whole thing just seems like a setup to somehow get Barton back up. I'm really starting to think Barton is Billy's love child or something.

According to recent tweeterings, Moss had a clause in his contract where he could opt out if not up in the majors by 6/15, and that Melvin says this was a factor.

If you're saying he's just another Kila, then I guess I am not particularly excited either way.

Still don't think that was enough to release Kila... but really I'm less disturbed by Moss replacing Kila as I am by the fact Barton is one step closer to coming back up.

Cespedes pulls up rounding second after his 6th straight hit and has to leave the game.

It's crazy how much more the A's look like a legitimate big league line up when Cespedes is anchoring the middle of the line up. I'm hoping Cespedes isn't out too long and that Seth Smith will step up along with Weeks and Reddick. Maybe today's game is a sign that Coco can at least get back to being average which would be a boost.

The starter's are pitching well and the NL West is full of weak line ups so maybe things won't be too bad.

Well we're like 3 or 4 games over 500 with Cespedes... and about 10 under without him. A lot is going to fall on guys like Reddick, Weeks and Inge to help pick up the slack... not sure how much more Reddick can do that he didn't do last time Cespy was out and Weeks isn't really a run producer but he's going to have to stay hot as well. We'll see if we get some consistent production from a few others in the lineup but I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried about another Cespy-free stretch.

My wife after the 2 out walk; " You know Fuentes is going to give up a HR right"?

Me: Yeah I know (said in a resigned matter of fact tone)

Me after the single: Maybe he's going to blow it the hard way tonight... group a few hits together.

Wife: No he's just setting it up for a 3 run walk off.

Me: You mean like that?

Wife: Yep just like that.

Fuck Fuentes and Fuck Balfour

Oh yeah and Fuck Pennington too

And yes, Moss and Seth Smith are smashing in CO. Ah, Coors Field.
