http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/8610888/los-angeles-lakers-fired-coach-mike-brown-source-says

Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike Brown has been fired after a 1-4 start to the season, a source tells ESPNLosAngeles.com's Ramona Shelburne.

Sources had said earlier Friday that his job would be in jeopardy if the team did not perform well on its upcoming six-game homestand.

The Lakers have had a healthy Steve Nash in the lineup for only 1½ of their five games so far thanks to a leg injury, while fellow newcomer Dwight Howard has acknowledged that he's still recovering from the back surgery that brought a premature end to his 2011-12 campaign and knocked him out of the London Olympics. Kobe Bryant has also been playing through a foot ailment.
The Lakers are off to the worst start in the Western Conference despite carrying the league's largest payroll at just over $100 million, which would trigger an estimated luxury-tax bill at season's end of nearly $30 million.

with all the starters healthy. However, the way it was going we could have been in such a hole that we might have been struggling to make the playoffs or at least get a decent seed. I know MB wasn't perfect but I also know that there are problems right now that don't have a lot to do with him so it's hard to say if this is the right move. I really don't know..

4 games to prove yourself after being kept an entire

He isn't a championship level coach because of his game management. That's all there is to it.

>anything but great within the game.

He managed those Cavs teams to perfection, literally
maximized them as well has he could have, had complete
bums as role players, developed lots of good defensive
talent

Lebron himself said he takes pride in defense specifically
because Brown didn't tolerate pussy footing from him

I know that ain't the narrative y'all like...y'all want the
"he just let Lebron do whatever" narrative, but that is
simply false.

He coached an older, shittier Lakers team again OKC
better than Feel coached his last Laker team against
Dallas.

No question there.

But admitting that would require a non racial double
standard and some real understanding of the game
of basketball

You guys are capable of neither.

Feel would want his swansong and for him to get a chance for a ring by possibly knocking off Riley and Lebron must sound intriguing.

Don't know if Feel takes it...but LA will give him the world or die trying

Said Feel seemed to be in a fairly jovial mood & more importantly not in Montana.

I'd be far more surprised at it being anyone else but Feel.

The bench is worse, Howard is better but that wasn't a position they needed an improvement in, Kobe is older, Pau is older, WP is older, and Nash is hurt. Nash is the most important piece on this team, without him it doesn't matter who the coach is.

"Is the bench worse?"

We don't really know that yet. We got Jamison, who put up 17/6 last year with ~30 minutes a game, yet he avg's less than 15 this year. Why is that again?

Oh, that's right, because Brown has no idea how to manage a bench to be productive. He did this last season, and he was doing it this season.

If he's acknowledging that he's overplaying Bryant (who wouldn't sit at all if he could help it), then yes, there's a problem.

103. "Yeah, the problem is inconsistent minutes."
In response to Reply # 74

Like going back to last year, he would go a stretch of 5-7 games playing Troy Murphy, then he'll get a bunch of DNP's or ~5 mins or less and play McRoberts. Or he'll play both in a game, each for 5-6 minutes. Or playing Steve Blake extensive minutes at the 2. Or starting Ebanks, then Barnes, then Artest (I forget what order, but there was a merry go round at the position for a while).

It's easy to look at their stats and say "the bench stinks!" but Brown is giving them the worst possible situation to try and succeed in.

But he's the best bench scorer we've had since Odom. We don't need him to replicate last year's numbers, but he absolutely deserves to get at least 20 mins a game to help spell both Artest and Gasol.

Guess you'd rather have a franchise waste their time with the Flip Saunders and Lawrence Frank's of the coaching world.

Dwight hasn't looked 100% healthy and now Nash is out. I think he deserved a little more time to get the feel of things. Feels like a panic firing to me.

That's why he had to go. He preaches structure and keeping minutes down and long-term goal and then continues to play kobe and pau around 40 mins...I am certain that interview about playing Kobe 43 mins and how his foot got worse and how we 'needed a win' made Mitch and Jim do a double-take.

I kind of give him a *little* slack because he was working with a collection of players who don't have a lot of time together. I know he was probably playing them a lot to build chemistry thus some mass substitutions, poor rotations, etc. Not to mention because of the poor preseason & subsequent poor start he was under a lot of pressure to win. I don't know if that was enough to fire him but I guess you can't wait until 1/4 or 1/3 of the season is gone to get definitive proof.

It was a judgment call & ownership made it. I trust them.

This is where I'm at. I think they were all trying to get into a groove with the new pieces.

LA2Philly & RyanM both make good points and I don't have an argument against them. Mike Brown has several coaching flaws. And the point about Dwight not being locked up is crucial too.

Kobe's last year + D12 not being locked might be weighing HEAVILY on management. And I'd bet the D12 situation has more weight than even Kobe at this point. The Lakers are forward looking. The traded Shaq for gods sake... lol

A weird thing to say, given a 5-game series loss, but he coached a hell of a series.

Problem is, D12 isn't locked up, and a 0-8 preseason followed by a 1-4 start is...an issue. Along with his terrible lineup management.

So a 5 game series against OKC tells you less than
5 games in the regular season this year?

I also think this is an overreaction, but inevitable.

If this was last year's team, they'd need more time. But there's too many variables for them to continue with a suspect coach/system.

No one's questioning that this is a "win now" team, right? They got Nash for a bunch of picks, they got an unsigned Dwight and Kobe is openly talking about retirement.

This isn't like the vague Boston window where they're gonna be good for only a few years due to "they're old!"

This is *literally* a two-year window where they HAVE TO WIN IT ALL with this roster. Anything less than a championship before Kobe/Pau/Nash/maybe Dwight leave is absolutely a failure.

And true, this is a roster that's never completely played together before. But his management style hasn't changed. We can hem and haw about his defense or the Princeton offense for days, but the one consistent thing from last season is (ironically) his inconsistent rotations and minutes management.

There is absolutely NO reason to be playing his aged and injured and already-overplayed stars anywhere near 40 mins a game. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Not to mention the much greater risk of (re)injury that we've already seen TWICE in 6 games this season.

How would that look if Dwight gets hurt playing his third 38+ game in four nights trying to chase a win against the Bucks midseason?

THAT is what we fear as Laker fans.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

>how do you know they'd keep a white coach around?

Because white coaches get more than 5 games in their
first full season to coach, einstein.

That's exactly why its unprecedented.

This is getting very frustrating.

I don't teach for free anymore.

he said "no coach as successful as brown has ever been fired while keeping the franchise at a high level of success before he had even coached 82 games."

if that has never happened to any coach (white or black) before, then on what basis can you say that it happened because he is black? being the first coach it happened to doesn't show that race was a factor

now if he's saying it consistently happens to black coaches and not white coaches, and can provide some examples of black coaches who have been fired before coaching 82 games even though they were 'successful', then he'll have a point.

.

I mean if you wanna play the 'fired 6 games into his second season vs fired 10 games into his third' it's tough to leave that part out.

Either way, the Lakers don't allow this shit to fester & it's tough to argue with their results.

but, uhm, yeah. a white coach with brown's accomplishments would never, ever be fired after one lockout shortened season with no training camp and five games into his first full season while in the midst of installing a new offense, which should buy any coach at least 30 games.

there's no trolling here. there's only some really racist shit.

Terrible and inconsistent rotations, mins, and decision making.

McRoberts, Murphy, Barnes, Blake, Ebanks, etc. were all getting inconsistent minutes and random DNP's for no reason.

This season the prism is magnified because of the high profile acquisitions.

He's an acceptable *coach*. Maybe he's better than he is now, or maybe he's worse, the jury's still out.

When I refer to him as a "manager" though, I'm strictly talking about minutes. People say "the bench sucks!" but if they're getting random DNP's and inconsistent minutes and keep playing with different combinations of starters/bench players all the time... that's not a formula for them to succeed.

Look at McRobert's and Murphy's minutes from last year:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4314/gamelog;_ylt=ArMKnSIfRwcHTbl2fl8KlL.rPaB4?year=2011
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3524/gamelog;_ylt=ArMKnSIfRwcHTbl2fl8KlL.WPKB4?year=2011

Edit: fucking yahoo, make sure to look at last year's logs

They're all over the board. Murphy followed up 6 straight DNP's with a 28 minute game. Mcroberts went from playing 37 minutes to a DNP the next game to an 18 minuet game the next. Or yo-yo'ing from 20 mins to 10 mins to 20 mins to 10 mins, etc. Both of them exhibit long stretches of DNP's then long stretches of "consistent" minutes.

There's no rhyme or reason to his substitution patterns and this was in full display LAST year.

do you think maybe, just maybe, his rotations might have gotten better with steve nash playing 36 PG minutes a night instead of derrick fischer and ramon sessions?

176. "All of this is a carry-over from LAST season dude"
In response to Reply # 149

I gave him a pass all of last season because we had serious constraints and expected him to improve in terms of managing games. He hasn't, it's painfully clear to anyone watching the games so let's do this:

1) Tell me why he was playing the bench 4 at time rather than pull 2 starters earlier and have them play with a bench unit who needs to play within their comfort zone.
------>He realized that he can't play 4 at a time so what is his adjustment? He inserts Ron out of position to play the 2 and what's his rationale? "I need him to help carry the offensive load". If you've seen any of Ron, you know the only thing he carries is batshit insanity. He's a ball stopper with an inconsistent jumper and you have him playing out of position alongside Dwight with 3 bench players. When you have Dwight in the game with another starter, you need that starter to be able to create off of the defensive rotations which allows your bench to play off of those two...basically, you need the anti-Ron Artest.

2) Why is he playing Kobe and Pau 40 mins when they clearly wore out last year, the former has a foot injury, and they are coming off playing the Olympics? He played them in the 4th in a BLOWOUT game to Portland and brought them back into the Detroit game because he 'didn't want the lead to get below 20 points'. Why is he playing Kobe 43 minutes, leading to his foot injury getting worse, and then saying 'we needed to win a game' in the THIRD GAME OF THE SEASON. All this coming from a coach, mind you, that has constantly talked about a long-term vision and plan.

3) Why does he insist on playing Ebanks at the 2 spot when dude doesn't have the foot speed to guard that position, doesn't have the jumper to space, or any ability to handle the ball on the perimeter?

4) Explain to me why he's playing Darius Morris? Really, explain that shit. Dude over-dribbles, has zero jumper (and he's always on the floor with Dwight so you need spacing), and constantly makes bad decisions.

The fact is his decision making and game management were questionable last year and it has carried over to this season. When you have a team with this small of a window, this set of expectations, and a franchise player in Dwight who you have to impress, you simply cannot sit around and hope shit gets better when the trend has been the exact opposite, and your current coach showing zero signs of improving his biggest faults. This shit has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with an effective management that can assess things clearly and logically, realize their mistake, and move on from it.

You're gonna sit here and spew your nonsense and have OE drawing hearts on your posts but there are valid valid reasons for this shit happening and it had to happen.

because you gave him absolutely no chance this season.

to be clear, i don't really have a huge problem with firing brown. from an agenda standpoint, it works great, because coaching change in season is a bad, bad look for teams winning a title.

but there's absolutely no way a white coach who had won 60 games multiple times and a conference title would be fired after one training camp and less than 82 games, especially when his roster had been turned over as much as brown's had.

a white coach would have been given a reasonable amount of time to make this work, with the udnerstanding that a basketball team needs to play together for at least 30 games before you know what you have.

The Lakers were completely outmatched by OKC and gave

Brown might have coached better against OKC than Pop
against OKC...Pop's Spurs lost FOUR IN A ROW and were
outcoached down the stretch.

The owners have enough patience to at least let the starting point guard return from injury. They don't fire a coach after a strike shortened season that ended in a playoff exit. They don't fire that same coach within five games of the next season.

The takers are a class organization but this is not the right decision.

they're still old

they still have a thin bench

D12 still had a backeotomy

Nash is still old, had a backeotomy, and hurt

I guess blaming Mike Brown is easy

because you can't blame Kobe

but if they were trying to improve

Amnestying RonRon makes more sense

he's this year's bag of dildos

now ontop of everything else

you switch coaches during the season

the Lakers are still a 2nd round out

and/or he makes those shots in the playoffs?

if anything, he's been in decline over the last 3 seasons

You can't constantly say you have a long-term vision, are in it for the long-haul...and then turn-around and play your ailing star 43 mins which results in his foot getting worse and then say that you 'needed a win' in the THIRD GAME OF THE SEASON.

I'm certain that raised a lot of eyebrows in the organization. Thankfully we have a management team that has the sense and logic to call out their own mistakes and nip shit in the bud.

However, given the age of Kobe/Nash & D12's FA on the horizon they probably felt they couldn't wait that long. It's not really fair to Brown but management made a judgment call. How can I not trust this organization though?

Didnt the Lakers purposely not hire Brian Shaw
because management was done with the boring ass triangle offense?
bringin back Phil Jackson would be a contradiction
plus if the princeton offense made Nash irrelevant
doesnt the triangle do the same shit since its not pt.guard driven?
Mike D's offense is more suitable but this team is kinda old and slow
plus the Lakers already strugglin with defense which is dudes weakness
Jerry Sloan would be interestin but he seems so blue collar
and Lakers aint a blue collar franchise
Nate McMillan is the dark horse

kinda like what the Knicks did with Woodson to balance out D'Antoni?

i'm not really a fan of D'Antoni, but I don't think there's really any other legit alternatives at this point.

In response to Reply # 194

and 11 overall to coach this team clearly in 'win title now' mode not make sense again?

because of Brian Shaw, a guy who never was a head coach before?

because they wanted to 'move from the trianngle', which they did in 2004-2005 with the ill-fated Rudy T hire then went right back to Phil after?

because he's not a 'defensive coach' yet the Laker defense in his last season in LA was rated 6th then went to being 13th in Mike Brown's first season & 25th to start this season?

I mean what wouldn't make sense about bringing back Phil Jackson to coach this team if he felt rested, healthy & motivated enough to do so?

Please tell me.

Because from where I sit, saying bringing Phil Jackson back doesn't make sense.....doesn't make sense.

But it's a bad argument. Anybody upset over that comparison is just emotional. LeBron and Brown were together for multiple years and achieved getting swept in the finals, and Kobe, Pau, Bynum and Brown lost in the 2nd round one year. The comparison wasn't rational and I guess it only works on this message board.

You're up above talking about how Brown had no off-season or training camp last year and so comparisons to a normal season don't apply...yet here you are comparing to to a normal season, and one where one side of the comparison had multiple years together as well.

what i said was that no white coach with mike brown's resume would ever be fired after one training camp and less than 82 games.

I didn't say shit about the job he has done as the lakers coach, and i can't. you know why? because mike brown didn't get enough time to show whether he's a good or a bad coach of the lakers. absolutely no one knows.

and the reason he didn't get enough time is

1) jimmy buss is an idiot, and

2) mike brown is black.

w/ his style of bball w/a anchor like D12 in the middle. That would completely change the defensive capabilities of a team under his coaching style. He would probably be able to capitalize off of D12 being dominate defensively & turn it into a lot of easy baskets.

under d'antoni, the knicks were top five in defense for most of last season. that's a credit to chandler, but it's also a fact. their problem was that they didn't have a PG or shooters to make his offensive work. but yeah, with someone like dwight, there's no reason they would be bad defensively - it wasn't like the phoenix teams ever had a great defensive big under his tenure.

not sure if the lakers have the speed or shooters to make his system work on offense. obviously nash makes a huge difference though. you could also have kobe controlling the rock in the PNR with dwight, then have nash and meeks/jamison spreading the floor.

Some of the defensive abilities of the NY team. Some of the offensive capabilities of the PHX team minus the shooters & notably the speed.

Lakers are cutthroat. This isn't the 1st time they've sniped a coach. Hell they traded Shaq.. lol

The window for Kobe/Nash is small. The window to convince D12 to resign, which is probably the most important player factor, is even smaller.

Like I said above, they made a judgment call. How can doubt them? Their track record is pretty good.

To add to that, they traded a bunch of picks for Nash.

Like I said in another post on here, this isn't like the vague Boston window where they're gonna be good for only a few years due to "they're old!"

This is *literally* a two-year window where they HAVE TO WIN IT ALL with this roster. Anything less than a championship before Kobe/Pau/Nash/maybe Dwight leave is absolutely a failure.

Yes, this is a roster that's never completely played together before. But Brown's management style hasn't changed. The one consistent thing from last season is (ironically) his inconsistent rotations and minutes management.

There is absolutely NO reason to be playing his aged and injured and already-overplayed stars anywhere near 40 mins a game. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Not to mention the much greater risk of (re)injury that we've already seen TWICE in 6 games this season.

How would that look if Dwight gets hurt playing his third 38+ game in four nights trying to chase a win against the Bucks midseason?

and ain't no white coach of brown's stature getting fired five games into his first full season due to his choice of offense.

The offense can be bad AND the minutes mismanaged.

No player is ever going to say "take me out". That's up to the coach. But *no* front office will ever say publicly "we're playing our stars too much". That's offensive to the players involved and will cause a shitstorm. Doesn't mean it can't be true though.

Also, you can keep harping about his "first full season" because of the lockout, but that point is moot because he had a full 60+ games with the team last year. And his rotations were terrible then too.

Did you see the game logs for McRoberts and Murphy that I linked to you elsewhere in this post? Prime example of how he manages players' minutes. Note that because of his inconsistencies in the rotation, guys are going to be playing with different starters/bench players at different points in the game. That's not how you build chemistry for a team. And if the bench is bad, you don't expose that by throwing 4 or 5 of them out there at once. Play them with starters, play them with the same combination of starters/bench every night, and define their roles. That's how you build chemistry.

You can argue that other coaches would have even better records while coaching us.

I'll even say that Brown might be great for a "grassroots" team. But this job just wasn't for him.

If it takes you longer than 2 minutes of watching him play basketball, to realize that Devin Ebanks is NOT A 2 GUARD, then you should not be coaching basketball. Brown still hasn't figured that one out.

You either have it, or you don't. Brown doesn't.

This day is just getting better and better.

This team is tailor-made for Phil's style, but a part of me is really curious to see what Sloan could do with it. Also, it would be great to see Sloan finally get his chip. (If the Lakers win, of course)

5 games?! without Nash for most of these games with no depth behind him to compound the situation? such a panic move.

and who the fuck is gonna replace him? any new coach will want hire his own staff, and right now most of the potential asst. coaches he'd want to come join him are currently coaching on other teams and they can't really abandon their teams or get out of their contracts at this point in the season.

Stan Van Gundy just called this "the most ridiculous firing in the history of the NBA." i completely agree.

Swipe: Van Gundy told the Sentinel that Brown's dismissal was "absurd," adding, "Why did they bring him back? They changed the entire staff, changed his offense, got two new players (Dwight Howard and Steve Nash), have had guys hurt since day 1 and gave him five games to get it going."

Mike brown deserved being fired. Twas a terrible fit of coach, style, city, and talent.

Many, many coaches should be axed this quickly. BUT THE ONLT TIME IT'S HAPPENED WAS A BLACK COACH. Maybe it will Starr happening more now, but you can't sent mike brown got a shorter leash than other coaches, even if you accept that it was a bad fit.

340. "Media sayin Mike D'antoni"
In response to Reply # 0

if Lakers bring in Mike D
shouldnt Kobe move to the SF
and play Meeks at SG for maximum offensive power
since his offense requires shooters on the floor
which the Lakers dont really have in abundance.
Mike D wouldnt be a bad hire
but the elephant in the room on D'antoni
is his style of play has never won a gotdamn thaing

And they say this wont be a problem and he can start right away if needed

Plus thinking about it how would this make him unable to coach really? Get him some crutches and I would think he's good, lol

In response to Reply # 340

Sloan hasn't won. Brian Shaw is a newbie, hasn't had a chance to. Byron Scott isn't available anymore, but he never won-won. Brown never won. Shit, nobody but Phil has won.

Like LA2P said, I think they have a dude in the wings.

But Bickerstaff is coaching tonight, and they've made no announcement on who it might be. Could they have made this decision without having the next guy in line?

If Phil isn't interested enough. That's my opinion and I have a decently reliable source on the inside who is saying the same thing.

they need to bring in a 'star' coach for this team. it needs to be an established presence as big as the team. phil, sloan and mike d are the only ones available that fit that criteria.

phil would obviously bring instant credibility and the championship pedigree. phil would be a huge ego blow to jim and jerry buss, but they've shown they will swallow their pride for winning (especially with so much money at stake).

sloan seems like the logical plan 1b. d12/pau + nash very similar to a stockton/malone combo with the added luxury of kobe on the roster. veteran coach that the players would respect and listen to.

if neither of those two options work, mike d seems like the backup plan.

made this move at this time unless they were confident that at least Phil, and probably a couple of other guys were interested in stepping in right now.

There was no love lost really between Jim Buss and Phil..but the fact of the mater is that Jim's sister is Phil's ol' lady ...and Jim's father still like Phil. It's not hard to figure out that Jim Buss was informed that Phil would consider coming in..

I think D'Antoni's name is getting mentioned a lot for a couple or reasons...1 is his relationship with Nash obviously...but the other is his releationship with Kobe. D'Antoni was Kobe's favorite player in Italy when Kobe was a kid and they have a lot of respect for each other...

My take on all of this would be.....

If Phil wants the job...he gets the job..but I want that to be a part of a long term thing....such as him bringing B.Shaw...and/or Derek Fisher with him to set mentor a future coach.

I don't think D'Antoni would be the right move because honestly we don't have the players to best fit his system IMO. He could adjust it, but I don't like the fact that his defenses ususally are not good.

if it's not Phil....the guy I would want most would be Jerry Sloan. Sloan is honestly one of my favorite coaches..people say he runs a slow down offense, but I look at it as more of him playing what would work for the players he had. He's tough nose..he's a no bullshit coach...and I just think with a more talented roster, Jerry Sloan could make the Lakers a real monster squad...

other than that...I like Nate McMillan also... in the right circumstance..I think he'd be real successful. He's been unfortunate that he's had a lot of head cases on the rosters of the teams he's had....and a lot of injuries.... He's be a nice pick for many of the same reasons Sloan would be as far as the temperment he would promote on his teams.

Mike Brown getting paid, delusional fans dealing with reality.

No matter what his inadequacies, without the team at full strength, with several key new parts, firing dude as early as they did was COMPLETE AND UTTER BULLSHIT.
