"Army-Navy: Why are we supposed to care?"

These teams do nothing every year, but sports media insists on this being a "big" game...Tradition and history can only account for so much, they're just not good football teams.

with placing importance on them playing football...if someone is that concerned about the job they do for the U.S. then take care of them when they're doing that job...don't hype up a game between less talented teams.

the annual football game between the NYC firefighters and police officers. There weren't any all-Americans out there, but out of respect for who they are and what they do, a lot of people tuned in.

Plus for a lot of people that are truly die-hard football fans, they can get into a competive football game at any level, whether its the NFL, NCAA top 25, Army-Navy, high school, Pop Warner, whatever.

going all out, i can appreciate that, and i can appreciate football at all levels for what it is...what i just don't get is why the rivalry is still a nationally televised game every year when nothing of signifigance to college football as a whole is at stake...and i probably won't get it because i have no personal connection to the armed forces.

both schools still have a very strong national following. Dubya himself attended last year, he sat on the Army side in the first half, then at halftime walked across the field to sit on the Navy side.

And as far as you having "no personal connection to the armed forces", if you live, eat, sleep, and breathe in this country, you have a personal connection to the military whether you realize it or not.

Point #1: The President almost always attends the game whether or not he was ever military. Clinton went every single year.

Point #2: This country no longer has a personal connection to it's military. This is about to go way off topic so I'll only say this: our military used to be about us protecting ourselves from invasion and from opposing military threats who wanted to take over the world. Now we're the Bully of the Schoolyard and we go and throw our weight around wherever we feel the need to regulate. So it's a bit inaccurate to say he should feel a personal connection to the military. He shouldn't because it's not like they're protecting him from anything at the moment. No one is trying to mess with us right now except for the terrorists. And our military can never and will never be able to stop terrorism. No country's military can. So let's not even discuss it further.

War of 1812, World War I, World War II. Those are about the only times, I can think of. The rest was us exercising the Monroe Doctorine, Manifest Destiny, and fighting the Cold War against communism.

the biggest losers of the war of 1812 were natives (5 of the 7 major land battles were fought against mostly indian armies) and it was most likely a war of expansion.

in ww1, there was no threat of the us being invaded, and its a huge overstatement to call ww2 a strictly noble war.

I'm not saying it was noble, I'm just saying we were protecting our asses from Hitler who wanted to pull a Napoleon and rule the entire world. Plus, there was that little incident at Pearl Harbor that ultimately pushed us to get involved. And in World War I we were helping our allies out against the German war machine. We've never, ever stood a chance or really being invaded but I can understand retaliation against Japan and the rest of the Axis powers and helping out our Allies.

If you had family that went to either Academy you'd understand how big a deal it is to everyone there. It's like a rivalry but on a much, much larger scale. It even applies to people who are just enlisteds and never even went near the Academies. I come from a long line of Naval Academy grads: my grandfather, my dad, my uncle, and my brother all went there. At school here I'm good friends with a couple of girls who are in Army ROTC, and we always give each other shit about Army-Navy stuff. It's something you can't explain. You have to live it, you have to see it.

As for discounting tradition - Army-Navy used to be the equivalent of the championship game in college football. They used to get all the best players because everyone wanted to go through there and during times of war a lot of kids were going through the Academies so they'd get a chance to play. They used to be powerhouses along the lines of the old Notre Dame teams. Why do you think Notre Dame still plays Army and Navy every year? And add that into the fact that those kids at those schools are serving your country so you don't have to. I'm not big on the military or our government's foreign policies, but you have to respect that no matter how you feel. Some of them will go and put their lives on the line every day to protect this country - although even that does mean as much as it used to since we're more aggressive and less defensive with the use of our military these days. In any case, they all realize they're not the greatest football players ever but they usually play harder than most of the players at other schools who are just biding their time and enjoying their free ride. There in this for the love of the game. They'd be on a free ride regardless of whether or not they played ball and they know that they probably won't be going to the pros so I think a lot of people see it as college athletics as it used to be. A bunch of amateur athletes playing the game they love for no money. These days it seems like all college revenue sports are like a developmental league for the pros. And that's not how it should be. But that's just my opinion.

You're right, I don't get it...my family has no military history, very little history in the U.S. for that matter. I realize that the competition used to be greater and more was at stake, but when is the last time either team was in any sort of contention for a national title? I personally would rather watch the Div. I-AA, Div. II and III playoffs if i'm going to watch players with less of a chance at making the pros go all out for their last chance at football glory. something is on the line other than pride between two schools and their alumni.

But isn't that still worth a lot? Especially when it involves people serving the country. If you can't relate, that's fine, I don't watch it much myself. But I respect the tradition and honor of people playing/supporting the game.

I totally understand man. If I didn't have the history I probably wouldn't care that much either. So I guess the point is YOU'RE not supposed to care, and you don't have to care. But everyone in this country who's in the military (officer, enlisted, or reserve), retired military, has family in the military just might care and that's why the game is televised.

If you'd rather see the Div II and III playoffs I can feel you on that. Sports are always taken to the next level when something is on the line and it's always fun to watch. So try to think of it that way: for these two teams; THIS is their entire season. Army could be undefeated coming in and Navy could be winless, but if Navy comes out with a win it would haunt Army for the rest of the year. THAT is how much this game matters to these two teams.
