I mean, if anyone should understand the importance of teammates that are near the top of the list of best at their position in the league, it REALLY should be Kobe fans.

Kobe fans can hate on Bron for many legit reasons... but seeking out All-Star teammates is NOT one of them, lol.

Especially one that he didn't even need to be 'The Guy' on for the first seven years of his career mostly coached by an all-time great.

And yet if it had been up to him, he would have been traded four offseasons ago.

Keep trying to draw a legitimate parallel of Bean's first seven years to Lebron going to a 15-win team in a mid market with no legit All-Star there his entire tenure.

And he did need to be 'The Guy' to bail ya boy Whaq out in the clutch when he was busy clankin free throws

And your sorely mistaken if you think I'm trying to draw a parallel between King Bean & Queen Lame. There's no contest. LeGone looks even worse now for not being able to get all-star caliber guys to come play with him on his squad. Probably because all the other guys that came over to play with him got worse from his ballhoggin.

Bosh: LeBron never asked me to play in Cleveland
Wed Aug 11, 10:45 am ET

By Garrett Downing, NewsNet5/WEWS-TV

During an interview on SI.coms Dan Patrick show, one of Miamis "Big Three" provided some insight into this summers free agency process. Despite the rumors, Bosh said that LeBron James never asked him to come play in Cleveland.

"We never had a discussion about Cleveland," Bosh said Wednesday morning. "We never really had discussions, period."

At the time of free agency, rumors had swirled that LeBron tried to bring Bosh to Cleveland. But the acknowledgment from Bosh adds to speculation that LeBron never really had interest in staying with the Cleveland Cavs for another season.

Bosh also discussed LeBron's ESPN special "The Decision."

"It created controversy," Bosh said. "I didn't really see it coming. We all watched it. As much as people try to say negative things about it."

He continued, "Whether it was handled the right or wrong way, it doesn't really matter now ... The perception of this whole thing is mixed. Sometimes you don't see it coming. I don't think he meant any harm by it."

During Wednesday's interview, Bosh said it will be a disappointment if the Heat fail to win an NBA title.

"With this group that we've assembled, we know we have to win a championship," Bosh said

And don't say Lebron leaving the losingest sports city in American history where no major sidekicks would want to come and moving to a gorgeous city in a better media market automatically makes him the "sidekick." He may be that team's leader. We haven't seen yet how it will play out.

What "team"? They just rebuilt 75% of the roster. What, is there serious concern that Haslem or Chalmers aren't going to respect James in the locker-room?

Cats are acting like this is A-Rod walking into the Yankees clubhouse or something. The "leader" of that team is going to be whoever has the best season.

type of situation. But it's not. 'Bron's not walking into a pre-established locker-room culture with an established pecking order. There's only two guys on the team that played with Wade during the season on the roster, and only one of them was on the team in '06. Wade being popular is Miami does not equal Wade being the leader on the court. The leader of the team is going to be the guy who proves it on the court this year. You need to stop reading Skip Bayless' Twitter feed.

bron stuffing the stat sheet will not equal being the leader on the court. the "leader" of that team is going to be whoever his teammates look to to make big shots with the game on the line, and that will be wade moreso than bron. you need to stop reading bron's twitter mental notes.

I don't.

and don't say lebronze leaving cleveland after choking in the playoffs when they had the best record in the league 2 straight years to go play with wade and bosh is some noble gesture to sacrifice self for winning.

oh and cleveland & miami are the same size media markets actually.

he won't be the undisputed alpha dog leader the way kobe is. so yeah that is a legitimate point that kobestanis can clown him with.

this from the guy already predicting them rivaling the bulls record 72 wins + that they won't lose 2 games in a row the whole year.

for whatever media market you are trying to define here.

>"virtually"?
>
>i'll assume, since you qualified, that miami is, in fact,
>bigger.

just barely. they're basically the same size:

Rank of Designated Market Areas - http://www.tvb.org/rcentral/markettrack/us_hh_by_dma.asp

Miami - Fort Lauderdale , FL: #17; 1,538,090 TV households, 1.339% of US

Cleveland-Akron(Canton), OH: #18; 1,520,750 TV households, 1.324% of US

so yes, like I said, their tv media markets are virtually identical in size.

the various avenues of media all have autonomy as far as their own individual definitions of what constitutes a "market area". when it comes to the DMAs for television, nielsen subdivides some metro areas and designates each part as a separate market. thus the rankings you linked to, which list west palm beach as distinct from miami-ft. lauderdale.

when you take the entire metro into acct -- which, again, is what we're really talking abt in 2010 when we refer to "media markets", particularly in this specific context -- all the media rankings (tv, radio, newspaper) reflect the reality here, which is that the south florida market is 2-2.5x the size as cleveland. it's the 5th biggest market in the country. and growing. not to mention the fact that it's waaaay more culturally diverse, has a more varied economy, that it's the 5th richest city in the world according to UBS, and that, well, that it's miami and cleveland is cleveland.

and this is all moot anyway; even the numbers that you posted, as limited in use and scope as they are, bear out the fact that miami's market is indeed larger! and bigger, as you know, is better. which is all frank said in the first place.

so again, what's really the point of contention here?

by any metric, miami's a "better" market than cleveland. much better. like, not even remotely comparable. longo's right here. i mean, it's not like he doesn't say lots of other dumb shit (no offense, longo), no need to belabor this particular point.

40% of all people know that.

>subdivides some metro areas and designates each part as a

>media rankings (tv, radio, newspaper) reflect the reality

again you are assuming metropolitan area as equivalent to the relevant media markets here. I mean are you saying bron's media market didn't extend beyond the cleveland metropolitan area? because he was probably the biggest media star in the history of the entire state & his media market there appeared to extend throughout most of ohio (except maybe cincy). is lebron's new south florida media market going to likewise extend that far? I dunno, but I doubt it. so yeah while miami's metropolitan area is 2-2.5x the size of cleveland that doesn't really reflect the reality of the relevant market sizes here I don't think.

>not to mention the fact that it's waaaay more
>culturally diverse, has a more varied economy, that it's the
>5th richest city in the world according to UBS, and that,
>well, that it's miami and cleveland is cleveland.

and that means there's alot more going on in miami than lebron, whereas in cleveland bron was the biggest thing going on bar none. so in terms of media market is it better to be the clear top attraction and undisputed king of all media in an albeit less glitzy region, or is it better to be in the more glamorous area where you're not necessarily the biggest thing going on?

>and this is all moot anyway; even the numbers that you posted,
>as limited in use and scope as they are, bear out the fact
>that miami's market is indeed larger!

by a whole whopping 1 percent! woohoo! that shows miami's market is indeed marginally larger by a slim fraction!

>and bigger, as you know,
>is better. which is all frank said in the first place.

nah I said that, not frank.

>so again, what's really the point of contention here?

I dunno, you're raising all the contention here.

>by any metric, miami's a "better" market than cleveland. much
>better. like, not even remotely comparable. longo's right

miami's obviously a far more enticing place for a 25 year old megamillionare to live. but is it actually that much of a better market for bron? I dunno.

>here. i mean, it's not like he doesn't say lots of other dumb
>shit (no offense, longo), no need to belabor this particular
>point.

dude I just mentioned it in passing, you're the one belaboring the point here.

I hope he's taking mental notes on how that finals celebration looked because he's damn sure not having one.

LeBron's Summer of Wrong
By J.A. Adande

LeBron James is lucky this is the NBA, not Gladiator, because he clearly has lost the crowd. Every move he's made this summer has turned against him.

The latest example was the reaction to the tweet he sent out Tuesday evening, the one that said: Don't think for one min that I haven't been taking mental notes of everyone taking shots at me this summer. And I mean everyone!

It was panned all over Twitter, most succinctly by the reply I received that said (bleep) him. (There was one great side effect: it spawned a hilarious run of #bronsmentalnotes by Myles Brown on his @mdotbrown feed.)

Quick summer summary for LeBron: creates a show to announce his free agent choice, gets roundly criticized for both the choice and the format; takes out an ad to thank his hometown of Akron and gets criticized for not mentioning Cleveland or Cavaliers fans; tweets his reaction to all of the criticism and gets criticized for that.

At this point theres nothing he can say that will make it better, no way he can get back in the good graces of all of the fans he lost this summer. He should either keep quiet and stay off Twitter for the rest of the summer or just go all in and make as many antagonizing comments as he can.

I hope LeBron is taking mental notes. I hope hes storing it in a mental database and preparing a mental PowerPoint presentation for every pregame this season. I hope he stops trying to be nice and turns into Clint Eastwood at the end of Unforgiven. If LeBron can live up to all of the additional pressure he created for himself than he will unleash one of the greatest campaigns in NBA history.

The first step is creating enemies, even if theyre imaginary. Thats what Michael Jordan did. I tweeted that LeBrons little statement was the most MJ-like thing hes done so farand that brought even more derision and LeBron hatred. It also exposed more ignorance of how Jordan really functioned. People insisted Jordan never would have said anything, he simply would have done it. Its as if people forgot his Hall of Fame induction speech last season, or they didnt catch the multiple clues of Jordans m.o., including his reaction to then-Knicks Coach Jeff Van Gundy labeling him a con man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDBkgwZqtCs - make particular note of Jordans comments at the 1:25 mark theyre almost identical to what James had to say Tuesday).

Another example of Jordan revealing the sub-zero temperature of his heart was in the 1997 Eastern Conference Finals, when he reacted to the Miami Heats physical play in Game 4 by declaring from that point on: Its personal. (http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/1997-05-28/news/9705280019_1_berto-center-bulls-pippen)

A common complaint I saw Tuesday was that Jordan wouldnt have said something like that on Twitter. Just as with The Decision, people are getting caught up in the medium and not the message. Of course Jordan wouldnt tweet that; Twitter didnt exist when he played. You cant apply Baby Boomer mentality and standards to todays generation. Its like failing to adjust for inflation when comparing movie box office grosses across the decades. If Michael Jordan had been born in 1984 instead of 1963 whos to say he wouldnt have created a Twitter account, dated a Kardashian sister and texted nude photos of himself?

What Jordan did do and would have done regardless of the era in which he played was make good on his threats and hold anyone accountable. Vengeance was his, time and time again. Now that LeBron decided to follow the Jordan route he needs to follow the journey to its natural end point.

Oh, and if he wants to be a considered a winner and not a mean-spirited bully, hed better average more points against the Lakers than against the Cavaliers this season.

I don't agree with the format Bron used to announce what team he was going to. Or at the very least you don't do this without talking to the Cavs organization to let them know of your intentions. However, I don't think there was anything wrong with his ad thanking Akron. He showed up in Akron a few days ago for a charity event & personally thanked all of his fans in Arkon, Cleveland, etc so people jumped the gun on that one. And I'm sure the criticism this summer has fueled him to bring it this fall.

Bosh: Moleskin?

LBJ: Nah nigga Moleskine. It's a notebook. For my mental notes. Maverick uses them.

Bosh: Can't I just get you one of them Heat steno pads. They're free you know. I took a paycut to come here. And I don't make as much as you guys. How about a voice recorder?

LBJ: I did think about that. Well Maverick thought about it. But I'm scared of my own voice. Can't keep my mental notes with my own voice. What type of logic is that? I did think about using Damon Jones voice, but that would mean I have to keep him around. And he always smells like Sephora and chicken. I can't fuck with that. Makes me bite my nails.

Bosh: Where do I get a Moleskine?

LBJ: I don't know. Office Max. Caldor. Office Depot.

Bosh: Are those stores even in business? How about Staples?

LBJ: Nah nigga.....Kobe plays at Staples.

really, this is where I've been.
and when I discuss this with folks off the boards, I raise the "PR" move as a huge point of his screw ups. I can't remember the last time I saw a professional athlete who usually walked the straight and narrow bungle it so much. I would say Marvin Harrison didn't count.

"it was all good just a week ago" - Camel

Criticism used to be that he was too goofy, too carefree, smiled too much, didn't take the game seriously, a BIG KID a la Shaq. What happened to the 'he shouldnt give a fluck about teammates, be more like Kobe/MJ, stop showing his teeth' committee?

Now, he gives a middle finger to Cleveland on national tv via The Decision, twitter-curses his critics, grows a Rick Ross beard and issues a public apology in an Ohio paper while not even mentioning Cleveland and NOW .... NOW ... NOW, he's getting shatted on? What gives?

It's why you gotta love the AIs and TOs of the world. Just do you, critics are insatiable. Regardless of the jokes, the man is a force to be reckoned and I'm already excited for the new season!

So long as my 6ers can somehow contribute to the Heat not having a 70-win season, I'd be happy! ...

On another note, what's up w/fantasy football? Who's the chairman in this liquor-house?

I'm as big of a critic of Twitter-antics as anyone, but this is a mountain being made out of a molehill. The comment was pretty fucking innocuous, and people are looking lame trying to find reasons to pile on.

"Gee golly. People are sure saying mean things about. I'm rubber and you're glue"? Whatever, people are talking shit, he's saying he's using it as motivation. Athletes do it all the time.

Truth be told, behind all the righteous indignation, most of the critics of these "mental notes" just sound scared.

if he stays in cleveland, he gets clowned for being a career loser and not in the same league as MJ/kobe, etc.

if he leaves, he gets clowned for being a bitch sidekick.

IMO, i'd rather get clowned while brandishing rings. but that's just me.

i mean, if mo williams and anderson varejao and tawn jamison are as good as you guys have been claiming they are for the last couple yrs, they should be able to @ least crack .500, right?

lebron was worth 18.5 win shares last season. meaning they should be @ abt 42 wins or so w/o him.

we can go w/ that if you like. over/under. cmon. if you skurred, it ain't gotta be cash. you win, i'll inbox you some dick pics or sumn.

but yeah, i don't think they'll crack .500, and even if they do that's a 20 gm dropoff. no, and i mean NO other legit contender would suffer as greatly w/o their main cog.

it's a cast of strong role guys, but nowhere near as good as an anti-bron agenda compels ppl to pretend it is.

Like I said...they played the role they were given WITH him. The whole set up is different now. LeBron was the key man distribution and scoring wise. They won because everybody played their role. He could have won with them. He was winning with them. He went out like a bitch on this.

so those guys *chose* to be specialized role players w/ limited skill sets, just so their games would custom-fit and interlock around this giant ballhogging lego piece that is lebron james. and now that he and his talents have vacated the premises, they should be free to emerge and blossom into the all-court players that they are, right? niggas finna fulfill they destinies like aragorn.

duly noted.

know what i think? i think those guys just weren't a chip-caliber supporting cast.

good? yes. championship? fuck no. he could've stayed another 7 yrs w/ those same guys, he wouldn't have won shit.

bron could literally go to any team in the L and win a bunch of regular season games. he's that good. to win 4 of 7 vs a great team in the playoffs, he needs @ least one other all-star.

cleveland FO had 7 yrs to put another perennial all-star next to him, SEVEN YEARS, and failed epically. no one even close on that roster. they fault. fuck em.

That's what all teams do. Big role or little role. That's what they do. If I'm a 1 I play the 1. I don't play the 5 when I want to. This is silly. lol They will have to emerge. People will score more than they did WITH LeBron...people will do more. Who is saying they won't? YOU. lol

Yeah they would have played hard enough to win all those games and then quit.

who?

not magic, bird or mike. not shaq, kobe or wade. '94 dream and '03 duncan, that's abt it. it's an exception, and it's rare.

who on cleveland is even close to the level of a worthy or pip or mchale or 00-02 kobe?

@ the championship level (conf finals + beyond) even the best have off games. @ that point every remaining team is great, and great teams over the course of 7 gms figure out how to gameplan even the best players and frustrate them into poor performances. it's happened to ALL the greats, i can make a list if you like.

that's why a 2nd all-pro/high-level all-star is an absolute essential. you can have as many solid role guys as you want, that's regular season shit, but when your alpha has a off night in the postseason, say a 6-for-24, you need a guy who can be the alpha for @ least a short stretch. that one guy, the #2, makes all the difference, and the cavs ain't have that guy.

i think bron's supporting cast was good, i ain't one of these "they were bums" types. they weren't that far off. but the second guy is the key domino. you don't have him and 3 thru 12 almost doesn't even matter. if you even add a bosh or dirk or amare to that team last yr, i'd say they were capable of winning a chip w/ that and i'd prolly judge him a little more harshly for leaving. but their mgmt consistently failed to find that guy, and after seven yrs he'd clearly lost faith in them ever being able to.

blind organizational loyalty ruined a lot of good niggas' careers. you got a better situation available, sometimes you gotta go for it, criticism be damned. that's life.

i just find it mind-boggling that in 7 offseasons, 7 drafts, 7 Fagency periods, 7 trade deadlines, them niggas couldn't put ONE other great player next to him. not good, GREAT. talk abt flagrant incompetence. shit's disgusting. an all-time-great talent and they wasted half his career. agendas aside, any real hoop fan should find that objectionable.

its wade's team through and through, he'll lead the team in scoring and he'll be taking the last shot. he actually won a championship without bron, like every other team in the history of this game.

http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/08/12/charles-barkley-rips-lebron-miamis-big-three-as-punks/

Charles Barkley weighed in Wednesday on a recent Twitter statement by LeBron James. Barkley, a TNT analyst and former NBA All-Star, said he hopes James remembers Barkley's critical comments and called a couple of James' more significant actions this summer "punk" moves.

"I heard about LeBron's little tweet today that he's remembering everybody who said anything bad about him," Barkley said Thursday on ESPN Radio 103.3 FM in Dallas/Fort Worth. "And he said 'everybody.' Well, I want him to make sure that he puts my name on that (list).

"I thought that his little one-hour special was a punk move. I thought them dancing around on the stage was a punk move, and I thought he should've stayed in Cleveland. Him joining Dwyane Wade's team was very disappointing to me."

Barkley spoke on "Galloway and Company," hosted by Randy Galloway, Ian Fitzsimmons and Matt Mosley. Barkley referred to a Twitter post by James -- under the name King James -- in which he said: "Don't think for one min that I haven't been taking mental notes of everyone taking shots at me this summer. And I mean everyone!"

James has been criticized for leaving Cleveland and for announcing it on a national TV special on ESPN set up by him and his handlers. He also was the subject of a story on ESPN.com about a birthday party in a Las Vegas club that sounded more hedonistic than humble. The story was later removed because ESPN said its reporter did not state clearly he was writing a story (the accuracy of the story was never questioned).

In addition to the TV special, Barkley also weighed in on a rally at American Airlines Arena where James, Chris Bosh and Wade were treated like rock stars and talked about themselves as arguably the greatest trio ever to play in the NBA and future winners of five, six, seven championships.

Galloway and his co-host chuckled at Barkley's remarks, which also appeared on the sports blog susanshan.com, then said they enjoyed the fact Barkley wanted James to include him on his list.

"He's got enough people kissing his ass with his family and all the people who work for him," Barkley said. "We don't have to tell him what he wants to hear all the time. That's one of the reasons why ... some of these young guys ... my opinion is he should have stayed in Cleveland.

"That one-hour special, them jumping around on stage like punks, that wasn't cool to me. From a basketball standpoint, I wish he had stayed in Cleveland, and if he takes that as criticism, so be it.

"He knows where I'll be, I don't run. I'm on TV every week, I'm easy to find."

No. the Heat winning rings now is kind of EXPECTED. The only debate is whether it's this year or next and how many they SHOULD win. Folks were saying Kobe can't win without Shaq. They're saying Lebron needs a top 5 talent next to him TO win. So Lebron on some "Just wait muhfuckas" type shit NOW doesn't really mean much.

Lebron's choice to go to Miami wasn't a bad or wrong one. With that said, there's no getting around the fact that a significant number of people will put a mental asterisk around his accomplishments for the next 3 or 4 years there. It's not right or wrong. It just is. Trying to compare it to other players won't change that.
