"I'm Loving The Manny-In-L.A. Era Thus Far"

Sending bombs into the left field bleachers with Vin Scully on the call, crowds going crazy, hilarious post-game interviews.......all on Boston's dime.

This is beautiful. There is genuine excitement at Chavez-Ravine nowadays. I had little reason to watch this team previously. Now they're appointment television.

Three things I'm gonna need from the final two months of the season:
1) Phils win the NL East
2) Dodgers win the NL West
3) Red Sox miss the playoffs

All three are close enough to taste. Can't wait until the Phils get out here next week.

And with your best hitter in L.A. and the Yanks on the charge......I feel pretty good about their chances of missing the playoffs entirely.

Yankees charged last season, Rays will falter (you have more faith in them than BOS? cmon.), and the Red Sox still have more than enough pieces to win the division outright nevermind the WC.

Worry about the phillies.

There's no guarantee that the East is getting two teams in.....and I think the Yanks passing Boston is a very realistic possibility.

>Worry about the phillies.

I'm a multi-tasker.

Speaking of worrying, who do you think American League pitchers worry about more: Jason Bay or Manny Ramirez?

They've made the playoffs four of the last five years including two world series titles and an alcs appearance.

They're two games up in the Wild Card with two months to go and three games behind and unproven, young team for the division lead.

And yet it's a good possibility this team won't make the playoffs? It'd be a shock if they didn't. It's possible but it's the same situation for all teams except LAA right now.

Yes it's a possibility, one pretty grounded in reality. I don't know how a Red Sox fan is gonna argue about me wanting to see that happen or offended by the suggestion that it could happen.

They're in St.Louis & S.F. this week coming up, I think the Phils four-game set is their next series at home.

and I honestly think this may work moving forward .... The fans love him already... it's just a matter of time before he falls in love with LA...gets him a dope crib out by the beach or something.... get some celeb shine happenin...

He's now amongst a far less cannibalistic fandom ...he's got a manager that specializes in being player centered, and handling egos....

Manny-mania is upon us..... I got homies who haven't tripped off of baseball since Dusty Baker was in left field for the Dodgers who are texting me with... "Manny is ballin fool!!!"

Channel 9 KCAL is the station for the Lakers and the Dodgers...I'm telling you...some cross marketing is coming probably right after the Olympics...Kobe and Manny rolling down Sunset in a convertable ..

That's for sure.

That's almost as easy to predict as the fact that the 2008 Sox will absolutely not win a title without Manny Ramirez this season if they even make the playoffs at all.

Furthermore, I predict that if any Boston fan would like to bet on whether or not the Sox will win the AL this year.......I'll give them 2-1 odds and match whatever any of 'em want to throw down and end up counting money in October.

let's see: Dodgers are going to the playoffs, Red Sox still barely holding onto the Wild Card slot, the only thing holding me up is the pussy-ass Phillies.

We'll see what happens with four games at home versus the Washington Nationals.

You can count chickens but like I said, y'all have no shot of going back to the World Series and this trade will be a big part of the reason.

And it's a testament to the BostonHitDirtDogs who post here that this post was taken as a 'prediction'.

If you read it, it's a wish list of things that were all within reach at the time......and still are.

your boys around like bitches, when you were out here pumping him up, excited for the Phils to come to town - while at the same time watching the sox win games and score a shitload of runs without him ..

thats all

and I guarantee the Phillies do not make the playoffs... i wouldn't put money on any of these things, b/c i'm broke - but I assure you the Sox have a better chance at getting to the world series than the Phils do of making the playoffs...

if you can come up with some creative wager, i'm all for it - if not, just remember this

He has one of the best eyes I've ever seen and he gets his hands through the zone so quickly, it's almost unbelievable. Any time he makes contact, he fucking blisters the ball.

Throw in the fact that I've been watching an anemic Dodgers offense for the past 6-7 years, and that makes Manny even more incredible....he's almost making me forget about all those years where I was surprised that we scored 3+ runs in a game or hit a ball to the warning track lol.

edit: And just to touch on the atmosphere at Chavez Ravine....friday night(the debut) was absolutely amazing and saturday was fucking great, and the W made it that much better.

With all the stupid shit that Manny does, he is one of the smartest players in the game. Big loss for the Sox. Bay is doing good after 3 games, but you can't replace 150 RBI's and 30-40 HRs each year. Plus protection for Ortiz.

He's not "stupid" at all.

No one can be stupid and be that great of a hitter.

He's probably as smart, or smarter a hitter
than Wade Boggs, when you factor in the
fact that Ramirez is charged with driving in
runs, while Boggs just had to slap singles
his whole career.

A "smart" contact hitter, won multiple
batting titles, revered for his plate
discipline, and he played for the Red Sox.

Its a perfect comparison, actually.

I'm saying that when you factor in the
run producing that Manny has to do down
in the lineup, he is probably smarter.
If he had to just get on base and slap
singles, he'd hit 350 too.

Debatable, but there's a strong case
for it.

So Manny is comparable to Tony Gwynn? They both play outfield, but...

I don't think power, or the absence of power, really works that way...lol.

leadoff hitter: usually not looking to drive
pitches nearly as often, should be less
likely to swing at bad pitches and take a walk,
should take more walks because big bats are
behind him, content with slapping the ball
for singles, set up rallies, and again, get
on base for the big bats to follow.

Cleanup hitter: is in a run producing spot
in the lineup. Should look to drive pitches.
Has less run producers behind them, and therefore
is less inclined to be driven in by batters behind
them. For this reason, power hitters in this slot
look to drive pitches that might be slightly out
of the strike zone, that a leadoff hitter would
take.

I'm saying that its generally easier to maintain
a high batting average with the first strategy
than with the second.

Not clockwork. But its generally the case. You
have loads of exceptions, but there is merit
to it. Cleanup guys are run producers and should
be looking to drive the ball.

That being the case, I'm saying if Manny were
only charged with getting on base and being
driven in, he would be swinging at fewer bad
pitches(not that he swings at many, but still),
and would be able to slap the ball a lot more,
and a lot of those deep flyouts would be singles,
and a lot of those strikeouts would be walks,
which would make his batting average higher.

Which is why I'm saying that all things considered,
he's about as smart a hitter as Wade Boggs.

Really not that controversial, actually.

I'd never stop watching Manny after seeing him regularly for 8 years so I've been catching the games on MLB.TV. Good to see the LA fans excited and Manny's been continuing to do what I'd expect from him. Giys like Doug Davis are perfect pitchers for Manny to hit line drives off of - and the NL has no lack of Doug Davises. Interestingly, his success for 2 months could be the thing that keeps him out of LA - his price will continue to rise.

Maybe...I think it's hard to tell exactly without doing some work. I guess my point is that NL has a lot of guys who aren't very good...the NL seems to have a lot of the elite pitchers this year but it falls off fast IMO whereas the AL has a lot more overall talent - so looking at the #s can be a little skewed depending on what your focus is. But Manny feasts on those guys who live on the edge of throwing a lot of strikes that can easily become meatballs a la Davis, Suppan, Marquis, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates, etc...

actually. really disturbingly easy.

in fact, i already did it in a thread.

nobody noticed. 40thstreet and i laughed about it.

compare how NL pitchers fare against AL teams in AL parks to how AL pitchers fare against AL teams in AL parks.

But that's biased against the NL pitcher! Fair enough--also include how AL pitchers fare against NL teams in NL parks. Compare THAT to NL pitchers against NL teams.

One set of pitchers did not see their ERA rise. One did.

I don't think the sample size is large enough to compare and you're not getting comparable comparison groups with the interleague stuff.

each team plays 15 games (or is it 18?). Even if I only use one sides' parks, you've got 7 or 8 games X 16 teams. That's a large sample size for a simple comparison.

in addition, because each stadium is in the sample and there's no reason to believe that one of the leagues will skew towards pitching its star pitchers more than the other league, it's reasonably random.

a two-sample t-test with 100 in each category is more than enough.

now, factor in that the pitching in a league doesn't change dramatically enough from one year to the next, and you could conceivably look at 2 or 3 years as one sample. now we're in the multiple hundreds.

it's definitely enough.

you think 100 is big enough to be representative though...baseball studies need really big #s plus interleague play is all within one point in the season. a statistical test doesn't mean anything on it's own - significant or not.

basic statistical theory proves 100 is MORE than enough. we aren't running a regression. it's a t-test. 50 is more than enough, in fact.

especially if you factor in how large the difference in ERA was, it's pretty damn compelling.

if there's a significant difference in ERA and a significant difference in opponent's batting average, I'd be 100% convinced. i'm not sure why you wouldn't be.

baseball has no more "need" for large sample sizes than studying educational results, etc. and none of those need thousands in their samples.

that's not right. i'm sorry. significant differences aren't the end all of interpretation - they are simply a test and that is all. if the population you are studying is not representative than all your test is saying is that those ERAs for that population is different. the population of pitchers in interleague play over the course of a couple of months is not representative of the AL and NL pitching staffs. you still have to interpret your data appropriately and yes, baseball because of all the variability requires a lot of #s. look at the underlying variances - especially with a t test.

yes, and in this case, a t-test would be compelling COMPELLING evidence.

if the population you are studying is not
>representative than all your test is saying is that those ERAs
>for that population is different.

yes. what exactly about the populations of the games I'd be comparing is non-random/non-representative? you're stating basic theoretical issues but you aren't actually proving how they are related to the example I'm using.

the population of pitchers
>in interleague play over the course of a couple of months is
>not representative of the AL and NL pitching staffs.

really? how so? what's not randomly selected about them? your argument comes down to this: the AL and NL treat their pitchers differently when in interleague play. how so?

you still
>have to interpret your data appropriately and yes, baseball
>because of all the variability requires a lot of #s. look at
>the underlying variances - especially with a t test.

you speak of "underlying variances" yet you've yet to actually mention a single such underlying variance that might actually affect the tests I'm describing.

And variance doesn't = needing more numbers. High variance might mean you won't see significant differences by league. which would, of course, then mean that the variation inside the league is much more important than the variation across the leagues.

there's no need to overcomplicate things. sometimes you really do have compelling evidence using a simple t-test.

maybe i should put it this way. If you were to design a method for testing the difference between the pitching of the two leagues, what would it be? what stat would you use?

Basically my point is you can't just run a statistical test and not interpret what those ERA changes are saying. They are not saying that one league has better pitching than the other just like you wouldn't say an ERA over 2 months is representative of a pitcher's ability. You have the think of what your measure of effect is saying and change in ERA is not saying much. Statistical tests can pretty much provide evidence of whatever you want given enough sample size but that doesn't mean it's being interpreted correctly.

You're right about the variance in this sample.

Especially a guy as dedicated to his hitting as Manny is. They are generally looking for the bat to feel perfect and feel exactly like they need it to. Even if it doesn't feel that different, it feels different enough to annoy a guy who's hitting with it.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jon_heyman/08/04/heyman.mannytrade/1.html

I thought this part about Minaya and the Mets was interesting:

"As was presumably the case for many other teams, sources say that the Mets didn't want to risk bringing Ramirez and all his baggage into their clubhouse. But strangely, after the Mets had stood pat at the deadline, GM Omar Minaya suggested on a conference call that the reason they couldn't make a deal for Ramirez was that Boston had requested a big-league outfielder back. That claim must have come from Minaya's very vivid imagination and appears to have been an attempt to cover for the Mets or possibly refrain from exposing their true feelings about a Ramirez trade. In reality the Red Sox had called the Mets and were told no, and that was the end of that."

Ortiz says he feels 'unprotected' without Manny
Getty Images
These are interesting times in the Red Sox organization. There's the post-Manny fallout, or glow, if you will. There's David Ortiz indicating and he acknowledges it's very early that he's already feeling the effect of Manny Ramrez not being in the lineup to protect him.

The team is scouting for bullpen reinforcements, closing in on an answer from former Indians closer Joe Borowski and sending Allard Baird to watch righthander Freddy Garcia, who is working out for teams tomorrow in Arizona.

To hear Ortiz tell it, he'll have to wait and see just how much he and the team will miss Ramrez's bat in the lineup.

"Manny was a cleanup hitter, so you don't get that everywhere," said Ortiz. "We're going to play and we're going to see what's happening. Hopefully we'll able to get around it and we'll continue to make adjustments. That's what we have to do now. There were a lot of things going on and Manny wanted to go, so now everybody is playing the game hard the way it's supposed to be, and I'm not saying that because Manny is gone. I think we're just going ahead and playing the game."

Too early to tell whether Ramrez's absence has affected his at-bats?

"Oh yeah, you watch the games," said Ortiz, who walked four times in the first three games after the trade. "We just have to make some adjustments. I've been walking like crazy the last three games. I haven't had too many pitches to hit."

I could have said:

"You sure she was on vacation?"

Or

"Not sure what kind of girlfriend is on vacation
without her boyfriend, but I'd be careful if I was you."

But I won't say that.

I'll just make you mad about sports.

you post that here and continue to make jokes in the favre post.

so now, you're a L-taking strawman using, deflecting hypocrite.

which he's also admitted and should be included in any discussion about Ortiz's performance right now. Both factors probably contribute at the moment but I'm willing to bet the wrist moreso - otherwise, you're taking a lot of credit away from a great ballplayer.

hit, popping up, etc...

he's gotten quite a few meatballs (in past years he would rip these, but he hasn't been right all season save for a few games) - and for reference his OPS with and without Manny over his time with the Sox is the same

its nice to make excuses tho

regardless... Bayhem is happening and we are 4-1 since the trade, like tjt said

but I love that y'all are touting your record against an A's team in the midst of a firesale fold job and the Kansas City Royals as evidence of something.

The bottom line is the Red Sox lineup is signifigantly worse than it was just a week ago and the other hitters in the meat of the order will not be seeing the volume of pitches to hit they once were as a result.

It might take playing some games against decent competition in a big spot to make that abundantly clear but it's the reality regardless.

I agree obviously about time telling when the Sox play better teams, but you gotta play whos on the schedule, and good teams beat the teams they need to

that pushed well into the daylight hours of Sunday morning and a long Monday of work.

I'll just hope karma will be easy on me in Manny's regard in the rest of the games this series, tonight the Dodgers would be putting up numbers on Kendrick even with Jason Bay in the lineup.

Still a lot better than him in a Sox or Marlin uniform.

As for the game, I think the main highlight will be Vin's call of the Jason Werth throwout of Loney: 'Bowa running down the line with Loney, Loney is out, Bowa is safe'.

Chollie going to the bullpen, Bomb locking on to the Olympics until further notice.
