"Your boy Derek Jeter is now a below average player"

Your boy Derek Jeter has one home run in 38 games.

Your boy Derek Jeter has a slugging percentage below .400. I got a little high just typing that.

According to the good folks at BP, your boy Derek Jeter currently has an EqA of .260, which, by definition, is league average. Still, that's ok for a shortstop, provided he can field.

Oh, right. Your boy Derek Jeter is, by all metrics, one of the worst fielding shortstops in beisbol.

I'm not even riding for ARod anymore, but the acceleration of the inevitable transformation of your boy Derek Jeter into the anchor that weighs down the entire Yankee machine is too good not to comment on.

hell, they're everyday studs.

but that SS y'all got in the minors would be a good target for the yankees. especially with furcal in his walk year.

not that the yankees would do it.

as there should be...

esp considering how well so many other teams are represented (including the Giants, Knicks and other NY teams)...

posts like this would be so much more entertaining if those #'s increased

i guess its like in real life - a lot of yankee fans are marginal at best, and only show their faces when it's convenient (unfortunately, I'm sure a lot of those type of fans - who would normally gravitate toward the Yankees - have been gravitating toward the Sox... terrible, but its the price of success)

Dude's hitting a ton of grounders right now. I'm inclined to say that he wont stay at a .032 IsoD for very long (which, incidentally, is less plate discipline than Delmon Young) but if he doesn't start hitting the ball out of the infield in the air then he's going to see a lot of strikes. That P/PA is already dipping.

Still, I think he'll right the ship at least in the BA/OBA department. He's too good at that not to. That .297/.373/.421 line from 2002 seems about right. Though he was still running then, so the EqA isn't going to move in the right direction as dramatically.

offensively, he's going to be fine with his bat. not good, and certainly not worth the all star spot he's tenured in, but fine. the problem is that it won't be enough to carry his glove.

I had to look up the exact figure, but the reason I know this is that I was arguing with a friend about Delmon Young about a week ago and pointed out that Jeter's 2008 is basically Young's doppleganger except that his singles have found more holes. That IsoP under .090 is... not real pretty.

I wouldn't make a judgment until the season is a little bit longer, but I'm comfortable with the idea that whenever it is that a Jeter collapse ends up occuring, this is what it will look like: face-saving average with negligible power and much, much fewer walks because he's being challenged more often.

That's still a bit ishy for me, because I don't like the idea that a change in an opponents' strategy could seriously move the decline process along (with regards to the walks). But with ARod out, the Yankees have slipped to Twins-level offense, so it's not hard to imagine opposing pitchers thinking that they may as well go after the powerless guys in that lineup and let them hit their way on. Right?

I guess we'll see. They had the chance to be daring and move him to CF or something, but Cabrera looks like he might be a better hitter *right now* so that move would look less sexy and more regressive.

he'll have to be abysmally bad--like Ryan Braun bad. but the Yanks will leave him there long enough that it will probably happen. at that point, though, it's a question of whether his bat will be enough to make him an asset even at a less demanding position.

That'd be a bad idea too, but it's easier than shortstop (kinda) and the bat will play there. So, a 2010 Yankee infield would look sort of like this:

1B - Rodriguez
2B - Jeter
3B - Cano
SS - Rafael Furcal

This may all be totally off-base, but for some reason that's what I imagined. Stephen Drew's dumbass major-league deal will expire after 2009, just in time for Boras to start putting the screws to Arizona on Drew's arbitration. Maybe he'll be available in a trade.

He's a New York Legend if he got cut tomorrow and he's good.

*Your* boy ARod only has only the first of those listed, has Kobe Bryant-level social skills, a taste for she-males, a track record of freezing up on big stages and will be the next to be exposed by the Steroid Black List.

Jeter's playing with house money while ARod continues to chase his.

If you're focused enough on Jeter that you're making posts based on his April, then it's to be expected that you're trading barbs on your boy ARod in said posts, can't have one without the other so this to me was a statement that you're back in the ARod business and I along with most others will regard it that way and reply in kind.

my arod support was equal parts support for an all-time great who got hated on because he wasn't derek jeter and an expose of how Jeter's status as an overrated media creation.

at this point, i've won the first part. in three years in new york, he's won two mvps, and the yankees would have missed the playoffs in both seasons without him. he even acquitted himself passably in the ALCS. at this point, the people who go in on arod look more than a little pathetic, and i don't have the time or inclination to argue with them. i never really "liked" arod. we all know he's not particularly likable. my support was always based on a support for rational thinking over ridiculous bromides about clutch and leadership. and one can only summon up so much passion for rationality

but jeter? i hate that fucker. i hate every yankee fan who used him to make my life in college hell, i hate that bernie got no credit. mostly, i hate him for the same reasons i hate kobe. i hate people who fall into amazing situations, get way too much credit, and have no humility about why they're there. so i'll enjoy every minute of this fucker's sad, willie mays in shea except never was half as good decline.

the better question is, why in the world does a philadelphian ride so hard for jeter? what dog do you have in the fight?

>the better question is, why in the world does a philadelphian

I don't think I really ride hard for Jeter by occasionally mentioning that his legacy is already cemented in both the team and individual sense, he prefers supermodels to she-males, and seems like a decent dude who his teammates & coaches like and respect.

I don't care enough about baseball in general at this point in my life to be bothered with April player-efficiency numbers or reading Baseball Prospectus.

And you know damn well ARod is the Kobe of that team to Jeter's Shaq, Jeter like O'Neal may get cut some more slack because he's been more successful in terms of leading a team and handles the media better.......but ARod is definitely the Kobe: myopic/distortedly inword viewpoint, socially awkward, public embarrasment from his dealings with females, gaudy numbers without major team success as 'the guy', etc.

I don't really have any hatred for that original crop of homegrown Yankees along with the O'Neal/Leyritz hard-ass vet types that won the early titles. Posada, Jeter, Bernie, Rivera......fine on those guys. Pettite? Whatever.

It was the later free-agent feeding frenzy period with Clemens, Clean-Cut Giambi, Mussina and yes ARod that were the ones I didn't care much for.......but I still as a Phillies fan don't care much about the Yankees because they have had no real effect on my team. I'm better off with hating on the Mets or Chowdahead fans.

Jeter is Shaq. We're done here.

WE'll revisit this around July 15th, when Jeter's hitting about .320, with about 100 hits, 50 runs scored, you know right on the pace for his career average of .320, 100+ runs, 200+ hits, 75+ RBI's. Yup sounds like a pretty average ballplayer to me.

Your boy Black Superman has 84 strikeouts in 64 games.

Your boy Black Superman has an adjusted OPS+ of 95.

According to the good folks at BP, your boy Black Superman currently has an EqA of .259, which, by definition, is league average. Still, that's ok for a middle infielder, provided he can field.

Oh, right. Your boy Black Superman is a first baseman and, by all metrics, a below average one at best.

Your boy Black Superman is now a below average player.

Shoulda just let this cause & this thread die like the Yankees' season.

No need to shine any light on ARod having half the HRs and RBIs he had last season with 35 games to play heading into his September swoon.

The Yanks are playing out the string, which means this'd should be ARod's time to shine. Gotta help Boston out a bit first though I guess.

Jeter's glove has always been overrated and now he is just like most of the Yankees, a walking paycheck out there.

Rollins has been limping around, he hasn't been in form until the last week really and now he is starting to get it going. Admittedly he'd been awful to that point.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

let's see how rollins is doing 4 years from now.

and actually Rollins is roughly around his career level right now:

career : .276 / .331 / .441 / 98 OPS+
current: .268 / .333 / .435 / 97 OPS+

really last season was the aberration for Rollins.

and just a point:

Rollins' career year in 2007: 118 OPS+
Jeter over his whole career: 121 OPS+

I'm just saying.

and Jeter has started to get going too, he's hitting .352 in august.

dude, let's get real. he hit a weak .322 last season. he basically bombed out a good number of times at the plate with runners in scoring position.

once again, a man that's averaged over .300 for his career should average .300 at the very least considering the number of at-bats he gets. jeter isn't on the decline because of his batting average.

nah, there's a good number of adults in the tri-state area that still believe jeter's the second coming of joe dimagio. this ain't news to you.

a "weak" .322? he hit .354 with RISP. LOL - just admit you were wrong already.

>once again, a man that's averaged over .300 for his career
>should average .300 at the very least considering the number
>of at-bats he gets.

like I said, he's a 34 year old shortstop, decline is natural. and he's hit .317 in the second half & .324 in Sept, so he'll very likely be right at .300 at the end of the season.

I still don't get how the number of at-bats he gets helps his batting average though.

>jeter isn't on the decline because of his
>batting average.

huh? his batting average has slipped because of his decline.

>nah, there's a good number of adults in the tri-state area

true enough. alot of his homer fans & media sycophants have recognized it though.

Came in here just to see what caused the re-uppage. The Jeter hate in here is strong...lol. Saying dude should hit 300 because he gets a lot of at-bats, wow, never heard that one. In fact more at bats should work against you because of the law of averages.

Jeter may not be in his prime, but he's been banged up some this year, but even in a down year his numbers are still right up there with other shortstops. Face facts, even if dude coasts the rest of his career, he's a first ballot HOF'er. Deal with it!!!

When it's all said and done dude will have over 3,000 hits, 1800 runs scored, 250 HRS, 1200 RBI's, 600 doubles, 300 Sb's, a career .300 batting average, and a few gold gloves and at least four rings for good measure.

>the post claims he is NOW a below average player...stay

Ok, with that said how can you call a player below average when he's NOW hitting .300, and is in the TOP 5 in almost every category for his position?

Jeter's average > Hanley, Reyes, Rollins, Michael Young, Tejada
Jeter's OBP >Reyes, Rollins, Young, Tejada
Jeter's total hits > Rollins, Young, Ramirez, Tejada

The record for hits in Yankee stadium is overrated, but his numbers this year disprove the original post. He is far from a below average player, and even still a far better than average player.

Yankee team records do have a certain aura about them though, what with Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle etc.

i was mostly pointing out the incorrectness of the original claim.

it is more impressive when its on the yankees or sox or cubs or any team that's been in one place for a long ass time.

but it's still not a very impressive record to break--all it really points out is his longevity.
